Long scarves pose health risks in China

of an electric moped. (Internet photo)

Several cases of people being seriously injured after their long scarves got
stuck in the wheels of their electric mopeds have been reported across
China, reports our Chinese-language sister paper Want Daily.

A ten-year-old girl was paralyzed after falling off an electric moped
because her long scarf was entangled in the vehicle's wheel in Handan City,
Hebei province. She could not move and had difficulty breathing after the
fall. Around 15 hours later, she was hospitalized and later transferred to
larger hospital for surgery. There, she was told she had broke her spine and
damaged her muscles. Despite the surgeries, the girl has to rely on machine
to breath now.

A woman in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, went into a coma after her scarf got
struck in the wheel of her electric moped, and on Nov. 8, a 7-year-old girl
was pulled off of a moped her mother was driving for a similar reason. The
girl was lucky though and only suffered from abrasions to her head.

A doctor in Shijiazhuang City, Hebei province said such accidents occur
every year as scarves can easily get stuck to various places such as the
elevator and bus doors as well as moped wheels. Police have warned people
against the dangers of long scarves.

TAIPEI, TAIWAN — ...
Electric Minivan: From a modest start making textiles 65 years ago, the
Yulon Group grew into a manufacturing and real-estate colossus. It’s in a
car-assembly joint venture with Nissan and independently makes vehicles
under its Luxgen brand.

Five years ago, it decided to expand into electric vehicles. The first
result is a battery-powered version of its MPV minivan. This is a full-size,
sophisticated, three-row family-hauler, loaded with high-tech driving aids.
A hefty 40.7 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery — nearly twice the size of a
Nissan Leaf’s — supplies a single electric motor, with a range of 112
kilometres and loads of power.

Luxgen’s main drawback, because of the big battery pack and limited
production, is a price tag of around $70,000 (U.S.). Its main use, for now,
is in hotel, resort and government shuttle services.

Yulon’s target is the huge Chinese market. North America is some time away
...

A key feature is the company’s lithium-iron-phosphate battery. To
demonstrate its safety, Wu slammed it with a heavy rock while it discharged
at full power. Although the blow displaced some of the cylindrical cells, it
kept running. No fire or explosion ...

Better Battery: Dijiya Energy Saving Tech Inc. says by the end of next year
it will offer an EV battery with a solid, rather than liquid, electrolyte —
the material that fills each cell and conducts the current between the
positive and negative electrodes.

This transformational advance would let the battery safely operate up to 400
Celsius, making it cheaper and longer lasting.

Taiwan-based LUXGEN has introduced a battery-electric MPV, the LUXGEN7 MPV
EV+. Working with AC Propulsion (ACP), LUXGEN developed the core
technologies for the LUXGEN7 MPV EV+ including the 180 kW (240 hp) and 265
N·m (196 lb-ft) torque AC induction motor.

The lithium-ion battery packs supports a 200-mile (322km) cruising range at
a fixed speed of 25 mph (40 km/h) on a single charge. Acceleration from 0 to
100 km/h takes 8.6 seconds, and top speed is 145 km/h (90 mph).

LUXGEN, an automobile brand established by Taiwan’s Yulon Group, is a full
automobile manufacturer and a dedicated integrator of automotive and smart
IT technology. Yulon Group’s automobile manufacturing operation began in
1953; it has become Taiwan’s largest automobile manufacturer with production
plants located in Taiwan, Mainland China and Philippines supplying the local
markets with more than 2 million vehicles produced in association with
Nissan, Mitsubishi, GM, Chrysler, Mercedes Benz and others.

[EVDL] EVLN: EV Benefits How To Quit Smoking Some Unhealthy Temptations

How To Quit Smoking: Buy An Electric Car?
By Stephen Edelstein Dec 5, 2014

[images] 2015 Nissan Leaf EV
Electric cars are good for the environment, but could they also benefit the
health of the people who drive them?

There's now a small amount of anecdotal evidence that buying an electric car
may help you quit smoking.

It comes from a newsletter issued by advocacy group Plug-In America, which
relates the story of one Nissan Leaf salesman who found that driving a
plug-in car helped customers do exactly that.

Ray Ishak--a salesman at Magic Nissan in Everett, Washington--told Plug-In
America secretary Jeff Finn that 10 customers had stopped smoking after
buying their Leafs.

Is it because the Leaf's serene driving experience and green image imbues
owners with a healthier sensibility?

Not at all.

The reason is considerably more straightforward: The drivers no longer stop
at gas stations, which is where they typically bought their cigarettes.

Come to think of it, avoiding gas stations removes a lot of unhealthy
temptations: not just cigarettes, but mega-sized sodas, salty snacks, candy,
perhaps even lottery tickets.

Who knows? It may be just one more benefit of driving an electric car.

It can also be beneficial to people outside the car, who don't have to
breathe in quite so many harmful exhaust emissions.

Those emissions contribute to poor air quality in countries around the
world, including--despite fairly strict emissions standards--the U.S. and
Europe.

While major improvements have been made over the past few decades, the Los
Angeles area still experienced 94 days of smog levels above the Federal
standard this year.

Meanwhile, diesel trucks and buses in London led to higher levels of nitrous
oxides than in the infamously bad air of Beijing for a period.

Whether it's the car or the driver who's doing it, smoking just isn't
healthy.

It's probably absent with most factory EVs, but conversions are another
story.

Lots of conversions still use belts. Some, like Wayne's pickups, retain the
alternator. Others belt-drive a power steering pump or aircon compressor
either with the main drive motor or, more commonly, with a smaller auxiliary
motor. I think some converters even use a belt-driven vacuum pump for power
brakes.

Using any kind of moving-parts machinery with loose clothing or hair is just
not a good idea.

At least the headline in this news piece was Long scarves pose health risks
in China, not Electric vehicles pose health risks in China. But the
headline writer is nevertheless clue-challenged; it really should have been
Long scarves around moving machinery pose health risks. (And not just in
China. Duh.)

I agree that the piece was marginally topical for the EVDL. However, it did
give us the chance to discuss this worthwhile benefit for purpose built EVs
over ICEVs and conversions - the elimination of belts, and their attendant
wear and need for maintenance. (To be fair though, I'm pretty sure that
Toyota Prius ICEVs have been beltless for at least one generation now.)

Indeed. It is one of the common reasons for motorcycle accidents in
India, I have witnessed a lady riding pillion get her scarf caught on
the mirror of the car they were passing, causing her to be pulled off
the bike and the driver to fall with the bike immediately after. Had
nothing to do with the energy used to move either vehicles, had
everything to do with having inappropriate clothing for the occasion.
