Using the sun's rays to actually power a useable production car rather
than just some accessories is still science fiction. A group of Dutch
college students are getting about as close as possible to making that
future a reality right now, though. The Solar Team Eindhoven from the
Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands won the Cruiser
class in the 2013 World Solar Challenge with a vehicle called Stella.
Now, the group has unveiled the new Stella Lux to challenge the 2015
edition of the biennial event, and it looks even better than before.

The Stella Lux is capable of seating four people inside and looks far
more like a normal vehicle than the long plane of cells and bubble
canopy of many solar challenge cars. The student-built machine is still
incredibly efficient and capable of generating more energy than it
consumes at times. In Dutch weather, the sun and onboard battery allow
for a 621-mile range with a top speed of 78 miles per hour.

However, Solar Team Eindhoven still has a big test ahead in the 2015
World Solar Challenge and has a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for
it. The event runs 1,864 miles mostly through the Australian desert from
Darwin to Adelaide starting on October 18. The Cruiser class emphasizes
practicality, efficiency and the number of people being transported but
only allows for one battery charge over the distance. Teams can run from
8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and must travel through seven checkpoints.

The brief video below shows off the Stella Lux's unveiling. The audio is
in Dutch, but the clip displays the vehicle actually moving under its
own power.

resistance from the City-County Council.

The council is suing to kill the $32 million no-bid contract for Vision
Fleet, of California, which would provide the city with 425 cars over seven
years in a lease/rental arrangement.

Councilman Zach Adamson, a Democrat who chairs the Public Works Committee,
said the council’s goal is to have the contract torn up and a new one put
out for bid.

“If Vision Fleet comes in the low bid, I have no problem with that,” he
said, adding that he is not opposed to a gradual switch to some electric
cars.

Adamson said if the first contract had been bid “in a deliberative process”
the city might not be in the position of the “cars burning up” now.

“That’s why a transparent process is so important,” he said.

City employees can still power their cars at several municipal chargers,
including the garage of the City-County Building, where there are 26
chargers, Manning said.

Hyundai-Kia has detailed a development program that aims to bring wireless
EV charging closer to a production reality.

The automaker has teamed with wireless power specialist Mojo Mobility to
work on the project, with assistance and grant funding from the Department
of Energy.

Several automakers have announced similar pilot programs for inductive
charging systems geared for electric vehicles, however the technology has
not yet eliminated the need to use charging cables for production vehicles.

The Korean automakers are starting by building a power transfer system
capable of running at 10 kW with a grid-to-vehicle efficiency of more than
85 percent. As the technology progresses, engineers are working on
user-friendly systems that allow the vehicle to be misaligned with the
inductive coil on the ground.

In phase two, the companies plan to demonstrate a wireless charger on the
Soul EV with a record efficiency of 92 percent. Finally, for the final
stage, the Soul EV fleet will be used to gather real-world data to assess
durability, compatibility and safety, among other important considerations
for a production system.

The automakers have not yet outlined a potential launch window for the
technology, suggesting it may still be far away from a wide market arrival.

The 2016 Soul EV marks the second year of Kia’s first mass-market zero
emissions, battery electric vehicle.  For 2016, the Soul EV is offered in
three trims – Soul EV-e, Soul EV, Soul EV+ (plus) – up from two in 2015. 
Offering a long list of standard equipment at a lower price point, the Soul
EV-e brings new value for those looking for a fun and funky alternative in
the EV segment.  The Soul EV+ continues as the range-topping trim, and is
further enhanced for 2016 with the addition of the Sun  Fun Package. 
Additional 2016 enhancements standard across the Soul EV lineup include a
charge port nozzle lock, an illuminated Aux/USB port, and two new exterior
colors:  Shadow Black and Bright Silver.

The new Soul EV-e provides versatility and affordability while offering a
long list of standard equipment.  Eco-conscious drivers will appreciate
standard features that include a DC fast charge port, 6.6-killowatt onboard
charger, 3.5-inch OLED Supervision cluster, smart key with push button start
and a driver-only ventilation function that closes the passenger vents to
help maximize efficiency based on vehicle occupancy.  The Soul EV-e also
includes heated front seats, heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and
FlexSteer™, as standard equipment.

The Soul EV trim carries over for 2016 with a number of standard premium
features and content that adds to the Soul EV-e’s equipment list.  Front and
center is the capacitive touch 8-inch navigation2 touchscreen with Rear
Camera Display3 and UVO EV Services2, Kia’s suite of telematics technology
that incorporates the ability to search for charging stations, remotely
check the state-of-charge and precondition the vehicle’s interior
temperature through the user’s Smartphone.  In addition, a heat pump HVAC
system is standard, and helps improve energy efficiency to maximize driving
range.

For 2016, the popular Soul EV+ (plus) is available with the new Sun  Fun
Package, which includes a panoramic sunroof, LED interior lighting and
speaker lights that pulse to the beats of the six-speaker audio system. 
Additional standard EV+ features include ventilated front passenger seats,
heated rear outboard seats, leather trimmed seats, front and rear Park
Assist, and power folding mirrors.

Addressing range anxiety, the entire Soul EV lineup offers an EPA estimated
range of 93 miles4 and an EPA MPGe of 92 miles highway and 120 miles city
for a combined mileage of 105 miles4. This class-leading range originates
from the Soul EV’s state-of-the-art 27kWh air-cooled, 200-watt-hour/kg
Lithium Ion Polymer battery, located under the floor.

The Soul EV makes charging easy by plugging into any standard 120v outlet or
a conventional 240v EV charger.  Two charging ports are standard, including
a SAE J1772 port for Level 1 and Level 2 AC, and a CHAdeMO DC fast-charging
port (480v).  Found behind a sliding door located in the front grille, the
dual ports offer flexibility and increase the Soul EV’s go-anywhere appeal,
making it more convenient to charge inside the owner’s garage or when on the
road.  Recharging times vary from 24 hours for a fully depleted battery
using a standard 120v outlet to under five hours when plugged into a 240v
outlet.  An 80-percent charge can be achieved from empty in as little as 33
minutes with a 50 kW-output DC fast charger.  Kia has partnered with three
charger providers – Bosch, Leviton and AeroVironment – which gives Soul EV
buyers an opportunity to select the unit best suited to their in-home needs.

The Soul EV has been honored with an industry-first automotive environmental
validation by Underwriters Laboratory (UL)5 for its innovative use of 52.7
lbs. of bio-based organic interior content.  Bio-based plastics derived from
cellulose and sugar cane are found in many areas within the cabin, including
the door panels, headliner, seat trim, roof pillars and carpeting.  In all,
organic, bio-based materials are used in 19 different interior parts.

Much like Volkswagen did this Spring with a lower priced version of the
e-Golf (details), Kia has introduced a new base “e” trim level to its
lineup, or Soul EV-e if you will.

The new Soul EV-e will start at $31,950, which is $2,000 less expensive than
last year’s standard “EV” model, and $4,000 less than the “EV+” (Sun  Fun
Package) trim level.

The only caveat to the new lower-priced Soul EV, is that Kia has decided to
make it a California-only offering.  So, while the company just announced
the plug-in’s arrival in Washington and Oregon, this model won’t be made
available anywhere but California.

Our friends at Kia-World.net (which is a swell place to keep up to date on
everything Soul EV) also dropped us a line to let us in on some other new
features for the 2016 Soul EV ahead of Kia’s official announcement:

The former base model, the Soul EV, now becomes the middle trim, and
will now come with a heat pump HVAC system.  It will also feature upgraded
windshield washers, side mirrors with turn signals, navigation system, rear
backup camera display, UVO eServices, luggage net, cargo net, and much more.

Even more features – heated and ventilated seats, park assist system,
leather seats, upgraded interior lights, etc. – are found on the 2016 Soul
EV+.

There is also the option of a Sun  Fun Package ($1,100) which adds a
panoramic sunroof, LED interior lighting,speaker lights, nozzle locking
function for SAE J1772 port (inboard port) and illuminated AUX/USB port.

Kia Motors noted some new standard features and color choices for the 2016
Soul EV lineup:

[EVDL] adding solar charging to 12 volt battery on LEAF

the 2013 nissan leaf has a known issue with its 12 volt battery either by lack 
of charging or vampiric drains, i just got a 2013 leaf and found my 12 volt 
battery at 4 something volts a couple weeks after i got it.  carmax replaced it 
but what they replaced was not the original battery.  the battery they replaced 
was only a month old and i don't know how many batteries this 2 year old EV has 
used in its 10,000 miles of life.

i'm considering hooking up a solar charging unit to the battery.  i've been 
using solar charging systems on my 12 volt systems as their only power source 
for 10 years now on my homemade EVs, however, this is a little different, since 
it supposed has a DC/DC system.  the options i've pondered include:

1. add an unregulated trickle charge [but with diode: 1-2 watts] to existing 
battery
2. add a regulated [charge controller: 10-20 watts] to existing battery
3. add a regulated [charge controller: 10-20 watts] to a deep cycle [that is 
larger than existing battery, maybe about 30% larger]

#3 is what i've been using very successfully for 10 years, but again this is 
different situation, eager for other folk's suggestions

i realize this might void some or all warranty issues, please don't respond if 
that is your only contribution, thanks

My 2012 SL Leaf has a small solar panel for just this purpose on the 
roof of the car near the back. You are just doing the same thing yourself.


If you have a good charge regulator with your solar panel, the rest of 
the 12 volt system won't even know that the 12 volt is charging. You 
should buy a charge regulator that float charges the battery at ~13.5 
volts. You just want to keep the 12 volt from going flat between uses.
