2012 Tesla Model S, brief test drive, New York City, July 2012
]

Tesla Motors says it will unveil the 200-mile, $35,000 Model 3 electric car
next year, ahead of a production start presently scheduled for 2017.

The new sedan is a key part of Tesla's plan to build 500,000 cars per year
by 2020.

But while Tesla has already revealed the car's target price and range, it
hasn't revealed anything about what the Model 3 will look like.

A burning desire for any advance information about the Model 3 caused a few
members of the Tesla Motors Club forum [
http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/showthread.php/44793-Model-X-Mule-Sightings/page180?p=1086086viewfull=1#post1086086
] to flag a recent video profile of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, which ran on the
Australian version of 60 Minutes [
http://www.9jumpin.com.au/show/60minutes/videos/4373736403001/
].

A portion of the interview shot in the Tesla design studio shows several
cars covered by sheets to hide them from prying eyes.

One is a partially-uncovered clay model of a crossover.

The section of the rear visible in the video appears stylistically similar
to the Tesla Model X electric crossover utility vehicle that will launch
before the end of this year.

It's based on elements of the current Model S, meaning it's considerably
larger than the Model 3 will be.

The two designers interviewed for the piece refused to reveal any
details--and as one forum commenter noted, such secrecy would be pointless
if this really was the upcoming Model X.

Numerous showings of concept and pre-production models have already made the
public familiar with the Model X's design, though the final production
version hasn't yet been revealed.

That's led to speculation that the clay model shown in the video is in fact
the rumored crossover version of the Model 3, which would be sold alongside
the sedan.

Two other covered shapes sit on the other side of the studio, near the James
Bond Lotus Esprit submarine that Musk has discussed rebuilding with an
all-electric powertrain.

One of those two shapes appears smaller than the other: Could that be the
Tesla Model 3 sedan?

It will likely still be some time before we find out for sure, but Tesla is
often good at hints, suggestions, and subtle indications. (CEO Elon Musk
just tweets, of course.)

So far, Tesla Motors has not given a date for the Model 3 unveiling, but a
recent report puts it about seven months from now, in March 2016.

The Tesla Model 3 will not go into production until calendar-year 2017 at
the earliest, and many analysts suggest that date will slip to 2018.

Tesla's Gigafactory near Reno, Nevada, is expected to be producing
lithium-ion cells well before then, and production will have ramped up
enough to provide the economies of scale that will make the Model 3's
$35,000 base price viable.

[EVDL] EVLN: 2015 e-Golf EV is priced spec'd to compete with Leaf EV

Base Price For Volkswagen e-Golf Drops $4,500 With Simpler Option
August 7th, 2015 by Zachary Shahan

[image
http://gas2.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/volkswagen-e-golf.jpg
volkswagen-e-golf
]

The Volkswagen e-Golf is about to get a lot more competitive with the
market-leading Nissan LEAF. The base 2016 Volkswagen e-Golf will be simpler
than the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf, and will come in at a price $4,500 lower
than then 2015 base price.

The 2016 Volkswagen e-Golf SE will have an MSRP of $29,815 (including
destination charges) before any federal, state, or local incentives, such as
the $7,500 US federal tax credit for electric cars and the $2,500 California
rebate for electric cars.

This will make the base VW e-Golf the 5th-cheapest electric car on the US
market, just pennies more expensive than the Nissan LEAF.

The LEAF is, of course, the affordable electric car to beat, so pricing the
e-Golf right around the same price as the LEAF seems like a logical move
(assuming it’s not easier to offer a competitive product much cheaper than
the LEAF).

The Volkswagen e-Golf SEL Premium will have a base price of $36,415. The SE
option won’t include the 7.2-kilowatt AC onboard charger and DC
fast-charging capabilities that are standard with the SEL. In place of the
7.2-kilowatt AC onboard charger, the SE will get a 3.6-kilowatt AC onboard
charger. It also will have a 6.5-inch display rather than an 8-inch display.
Lastly (I think), SE owners won’t be able to purchase the Driver Assist
package, which includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency
braking, and parking assist.

The motor will still be rated at 85 kW (115 horsepower) and 199 lb-feet of
torque. The e-Golf will also have the same 24.2-kWh lithium-ion battery
pack, and the EPA range rating will reportedly remain 83 miles (134
kilometers).

The 2016 Volkswagen e-Golf will hit the markets where the e-Golf is sold (10
states on the West Coast and in the Northeast) in September 2015.

The $36,415 price of the Volkswagen e-Golf SEL Premium still puts it quite a
bit cheaper than the base BMW i3 or Mercedes B-Class Electric, but above the
Kia Soul EV and Chevy Volt.

An open hood reveals the motor of a Volkswagen e-Golf electric car prior to
the company's annual press conference to announce financial results for 2013
on March 13, 2014 in Berlin, Germany.
]

Things are more than heating up when it comes to affordable electrical
vehicles and it looks like VW has thrown its bid into the ring. According to
a VW Press release [
http://media.vw.com/release/1038/
] that hit the web earlier yesterday (Aug. 5, 2015) VW not only has updated
most of its fleet to be more competitive but has slashed the price of their
2015 VW e-Golf by $4,500 to compete with the likes of the Nissan Leaf and
the soon to hit the market Tesla Model 3. At $29,815, VW has priced their
e-Golf within striking distance of the 2016 Nissan Leaf ($55 less to be
exact) and it's no coincidence.

A quick glance at 2015 Nissan Leaf sales for 2015 [
http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01/nissan-leaf-sales-figures.html
] shows a strong yet steady response from those in the market for an
all-electrical vehicle. Armed with only an 84-mile range, people have slowly
migrated to more attractive options like the 2015 Chevrolet Volt which
offers both an all-electric mode with a backup generator as an engine to
erase any range anxiety fears. Nissan is addressing this, as it's to be
expected, by stuffing a bigger and denser battery into the 2016 Nissan Leaf
(at least that's what rumors are saying) although there hasn't been an
official announcement from Nissan HQ. Although sales have been lackluster
for Nissan due to lower gas prices, demand still remains strong which has
prompted VW to this price drop.

The 2016 e-Golf will still offer its more premium version, the SEL, but this
new value oriented SE model will make this handsome electrical vehicle
available to a wider market. The main advantage to the VW e-Golf when
compared to its competitors comes from the fact that VW engineered the Golf
chassis to fit diesel, gas and electric motor variants. That means the
interior room hasn't been squashed thanks to a large battery pack and its
chassis can handle most anything you throw at it with aplomb.

Although no specifics have been mentioned, we expect the same

Ford Gives Some Insight Into Today’s Plug-In Owner

http://insideevs.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/ford-survey-2.jpg
Ford Takes The Pulse Of The EV Nation
]

Ford has polled 10,000-odd plug-in drivers (with a little help from
PlugInsights [
http://www.pluginsights.com/
]– a data gathering service from the guys that brought PlugShare to market)
to highlight and better understand today’s EV owner.

Here are some of the highlights that a Ford spokesperson says indicates EV
owners love their vehicles “and the smart phone applications that help keep
in the touch with them”:

* – Renewable Energy: 83 percent of EV drivers will consider or have already
installed adding solar panels to charge their vehicles at home for an
emission-free driving experience that also saves them money

* – Future EVs: 92 percent of battery electric and 94 percent of PHEV
drivers plan to purchase another EV in the future.

* – Smart phones are the most commonly used platform for EV owners, as they
use apps to check the battery’s charge, start climate control functions, and
review charge statuses. ◦The most requested smart phone features include
vehicle health alerts, public charging station locator, charging time
indicators, and reserving and paying for charging functions.

* – Home charging: Almost half of PHEV drivers and more than ¼ of battery
electric drivers use conventional outlets (120/110v) at home. 88% of EV
drivers want a fast charger in the home.

For us, the most interesting (and conflicting) result of the survey is that
the vast majority of PHEV owners today are mostly still utilizing the
traditional 110v plug, but also want faster charging at the same time.

Perhaps this is either a call for more inexpensive L2 charging options, or
the desire/anticipation to have a larger battery/all-electric range in their
next PHEV purchase.

Re: [EVDL] REGEN With Curtis 1238 Controller

2015-08-13 Thread George Wagner via EV
After my inquiry, HPEVS got right back to me to answer these questions.
Works pretty much like I thought, even though the Curtis Manual doesn't
really describe it:

The regen does automatically engage when the accelerator is released back to
idle.

The brake pot can simply be hand-controlled to adjust the strength of the
regen (the brake pot does not have to be integrated with the vehicle's brake
pedal travel).

The brake relay wire (pin 3, orange wire) can be used to turn on the
vehicle's existing brake lights when the regen engages, if the controller
supports that function.

Just home from this EVent with our 2012 Leaf. I was at the far end of
the static display area, pretty much as last year.

I continue to be astonished by the number of walk-by traffic who are
not aware that pure electric vehicles exist, or are available for
purchase at dealers. My most frequent question for the day was, where
do you put the gas in? followed by, yeah, yeah, I know it can run on
electricity, but where do you put the gas in? Sigh. 35 years of
trying to educate the public on EVs, and this is still the level of
public awareness.

I had three good conversations in 4 hours (not counting the other EV
owners present), but the typical interaction could be summed up as some
or all of the following.

Zero-emissions: yawn. Quiet operation: yawn. Reduced pollution: not
true, we still burn all that coal to generate the electricity, so it
actually increases pollution (where I get to mention there is no
coal-fired generation in Ontario or Quebec - we're standing a few
hundred metres from the border between the two - general reaction:
astonishment or that's not true). Sure, EVs might be better for the
environment, but only rich people can afford them - they all cost over
$100,000. So, I tell them our Leaf cost about $20,000 (Cdn) after
rebates and they don't believe it. Low maintenance: really? I heard
you have to replace the battery every couple of years and it costs
thousands of dollars: 8 year warranty on the battery, and experience
with other EVs with similar batteries suggest they will last much
longer than that. But this is the gotcha line: 2 cents a kilometre for
fuel cost (gassers here are typically 15 to 20 cents, real-world, even
with oil under $45/barrel) That's interesting!

There's still a lot of education to be done. My longstanding opinion,
reinforced today: don't talk to people about the enviro-benefits or
climate change; they don't care - instead, talk to their wallets; that
gets them excited.

cost (gassers here are typically 15 to 20 cents, real-world, even with
oil under $45/barrel) That's interesting!

There's still a lot of education to be done. My longstanding opinion,
reinforced today: don't talk to people about the enviro-benefits or
climate change; they don't care - instead, talk to their wallets; that
gets them excited.

EV Day Organizers of this year?s Ottawa EV Day on Sparks Street are hoping
for an attendance boost over last year?s inaugural event, pictured here.

Future here now
If you?ve ever dreamed of what the electric car lifestyle feels like, Ottawa
EcoDistrict will make it easy for you.

On Aug. 13, the parking lane of O?Connor Street at Sparks Street will be
filled with silently idling electric vehicles, ready for an eager test
driver to hop behind the wheel. The opportunity is part of EcoDistrict?s
second annual Ottawa EV Day on Sparks street, an initiative that serves to
showcase EV technology in the hopes of compelling local drivers pass over
gas-fueled vehicles in favour of a zero emission option.

Organizers from the environmental advocacy non-profit are again teaming up
with partner Plug?n Drive and members of the Electric Vehicle Council of
Ottawa to pull off the event.

?Our focus this year is on ensuring we get way more people out at the
(Sparks Street) Mall, have them get a feel for EV?s and get it into their
minds for a next purchase,? said Don Grant, executive director of Ottawa
EcoDistrict, adding that there will be a diverse mix of partial or
full-electric vehicles , including the [Mitsubishi i-MiEV, BMW i3 EVs,
Ford C-Max Energi and Chevrolet Volt pih].

Other EVs might be added as the event date draws closer ...

?We?re hoping to boost demand for EVs not just in downtown Ottawa, but
Ottawa in general,? said EcoDistrict program co-ordinator Clark Trivers,
adding that this year?s setup will be more helpful for the test drivers ...
?This year we have an agreement with the city to occupy the parking lane of
O?Connor to accommodate test drives.?

Grant added that the event has been moved to an August date, rather than the
September event held last year. Though the weather was fine for last year?s
EV Day, holding it a month earlier increases the odds of fair weather, he
said.

Though a wide range of EV or partial-EV vehicles have been available for
several years, Grant is interested in a slew of new EVs expected to arrive
within the next year or two that could prove to be game-changers. For the
ones available for testing at the event, Grant anticipates participants
won?t have to wait long before getting the chance to slide behind the wheel.

Ottawa EV Day will be held Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the bulk of
the action held outside 165

I continue to be astonished by the number of walk-by traffic who are not
aware that pure electric vehicles exist, or are available for purchase at
dealers. My most frequent question for the day was, where do you put the gas
in? followed by, yeah, yeah, I know it can run on electricity, but where do
you put the gas in? Sigh. 35 years of trying to educate the public on EVs,
and this is still the level of public awareness.

I had three good conversations in 4 hours (not counting the other EV owners
present), but the typical interaction could be summed up as some or all of
 the following.

Zero-emissions: yawn. Quiet operation: yawn. Reduced pollution: not true,
we still burn all that coal to generate the electricity, so it actually
increases pollution (where I get to mention there is no coal-fired generation
in Ontario or Quebec - we're standing a few hundred metres from the border
between the two - general reaction: astonishment or that's not true).
Sure, EVs might be better for the environment, but only rich people can
afford them - they all cost over $100,000. So, I tell them our Leaf cost
about $20,000 (Cdn) after rebates and they don't believe it. Low
maintenance: really? I heard you have to replace the battery every couple
of years and it costs thousands of dollars: 8 year warranty on the battery,
and experience with other EVs with similar batteries suggest they will last
much longer than that. But this is the gotcha line: 2 cents a kilometre for
fuel cost (gassers here are typically 15 to 20 cents, real-world, even with
