[EVDL] EVLN: Jaguar's first EV will be an E-Pace SUV
http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/spy-shots/jaguar/jaguar-e-pace-revealed-the-big-cats-first-ev-will-also-be-an-suv/ Jaguar E-Pace revealed: the big cat's first EV will also be an SUV [20151201] Georg Kacher [images http://images.car.bauercdn.com/pagefiles/22236/1040x585/001_e-pace_01.jpg The Jaguar E-Pace: CAR's artist's impression http://images.car.bauercdn.com/pagefiles/22236/1040x0/audietroniaa.jpg?scale=down Audi's take on the electric SUV: the Q6-previewing E-tron concept ] More info on Jaguar F-Pace [ http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/jaguar/f-pace/ ] - Jaguar E-Pace: an all-electric SUV - To be built by Magna Steyr in Austria - Carbonfibre build, high tech Jaguar's new F-Pace crossover http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/jaguar/f-pace/ coming in 2016 is but the start of an onslaught of new SUV products from the big cat - and one of the planned 4x4s is in fact all-electric. Meet the new E-Pace, depicted in our artist's impression above. According to several sources, Jaguar's first battery electric vehicle (BEV) will be the smaller crossover. The principle is sound; like the approach chosen by Audi and Mercedes, Jaguar is hoping to broaden the appeal of its first EV and take a chunk out of Tesla Model X sales in the process. E-Pace: the most slippery of Jaguars The crossover with cat's whiskers breaks new ground in more ways than one. While its hard points were carefully determined to comply with US standards so that it will be certified as an SUV in its biggest target market, the design is anything but boxy and boring, according to CAR's sources. Instead, expect a low and flowing silhouette, a steeply raked windscreen and a tapered rear end, active and passive aerodynamic aids, large-diameter but relatively narrow wheels, an evolution of Jaguar's family face and a selection of BEV-specific cues. With a targeted drag coefficient of 0.28, what will likely be badged E-Pace may well be the world's most slippery SUV. Audi's take on the electric SUV: the Q6-previewing E-tron concept Think of it as a sleeker, sportier and slightly smaller Audi Q6, aka the Frankfurt show E-tron concept car (above). A Jag built in Austria To be assembled by Magna Steyr in Graz according to JLR's own lightweight receipe, the zero-emission Jaguar needs to find at least 20,000 takers per year to turn a profit. [EVDL] EVLN status ... feast or famine> sign of the times
As some know, I sieve the newswires for plugin related items. I do this multiple times a day, and I change my search parameters as needed to try to get usable news or at least interesting items to post (yes, it is quite a time consuming task). Those the follow my EVLN posts have recently seen their number per day increase, and now decease. It isn't for the lack of trying, or another health issue for me (I'm keeping my head above water, thanks). It is the drying up of interesting news pieces. Hopefully this is only temporary, and we can get back to the nice juicy-sweet ones we like to read. [This leaves a lot of time during the day on my hands, so recently I have been updating my back up PC (hardware, software, and OS'). This is a good thing as hopefully in the future, I would like to take some trips to see if relocating/moving is a possibility. I will not get into the personal issue-hoops I have to jump though so that I can eat low-salt (heart issues), or find a transportation that fits my taller-larger than most sized body, etc. I am also using the time to explore other Internet connectivity. Not only for when the shared connectivity at home goes over loaded (unusable), but also so when I am on the road (in a motel room), or out remote (visiting U.S. cities near a VA hospital), I can still post the EVLN items some enjoy. I am at a decision point of either to choose a (MiFi) wireless (non-phone) device (which would connect via a WiFI-hotpsot), or just go with a tethered cell-phone I can WiFi hotspot off of. Since this topic is OT on the evdl.org , please directly send me any views/ideas you have on that so as to save evdl bandwidth.] Newswires: Currently, what I am seeing is a whole lot of non-EV topics that purposely throw-in Electric Vehicle in their wording so as to increase their readership, or dilute those like myself that are seeking actual EV news items. There are a lot of fcv, ngv items doing this, as well as a new crop of anti-plugin pieces (IMO I am going to see even more of those as the election nears). There are also some news items of a topic here in the U.S. we have rarely seen. Yes, the days of old where smog was known to be horrible in LA (Los Angeles, CA), we have not had the severe problems in Europe (i.e.: Paris, London, etc.) or Asia (i.e.: China, etc.). So, there are several news items about those that include the use of EVs, and the carbon-free/lower-local-carbon way of their use. I do not post many these to the evdl, though a good snap shot of reason/cause of the huge push of more EV use, ice-smog is OT on the evdl. As I previously posted, there are also the feel-good news items I do not post, that speak of concepts that are years away, that may never go into production, and or that I have already posted about (I check the evdl archives for my own work). A lot of those are just PR for those companies to drum up investment$. My goal on those is to post them once, but hold off until something improves/gets closer to production before I post them again. As we have seen, I am not the only one that posts the news items they have found. But I ask that like me, please do your best to follow the evdl.org charter of what is on-topic. Do know that news links change quickly, which is why I capture what I see as text before it is removed or placed somewhere else. So, it is the text I am posting whole lot more than the URL I include to validate and show where the text came from. I do this as a service because some people do not want to pay for all the subscriptions that some media outlets require. For those that lurk or are remote and want their EVLN fix, the archive is always available to you (see URL below), or click on the EVLN folder icon floating at the top of the main archive page. [EVDL] EVLN: Leno’s Garage spins Local Motors' 3D-printed EV on national TV
http://www.3ders.org/articles/20151204-jay-leno-takes-local-motors-3d-printed-car-for-a-spin-on-national-tv.html Jay Leno takes Local Motors' 3D printed car for a spin on national TV Dec 4, 2015 Kira [images http://www.3ders.org/images2015/jay-leno-local-motors-3d-printed-car-national-tv.jpeg http://www.3ders.org/images2015/jay-leno-local-motors-3d-printed-car-national-tv2.jpeg Leno and Rogers cruising around in the electric powertrain mule http://www.3ders.org/images2015/jay-leno-local-motors-3d-printed-car-national-tv3.jpeg Leno tries to break a 3D-printed fender with a hammer http://www.3ders.org/images2015/jay-leno-local-motors-3d-printed-car-national-tv4.jpeg Latest prototype of the 3D printed LM3D Swim ] In one fell swoop, 3D printing technology has officially made it into the annals television history alongside one of the most celebrated late night show personalities, and a legend amongst automotive enthusiasts. While most of us know Jay Leno as the silver-haired host of NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the American comedian is also a hardcore car-lover—not only does he own approximately 286 vehicles (169 automobiles and 117 motorcycles), he’s a respected authority who can take them apart, build them back up, and offer advice on everything from restoring unique models to jet-powered hybrid technology. It comes as no surprise then, that he would be one of the first to jump into the 3D printing motorwagon, and feature the world’s first 3D printed car by Local Motors on his primetime television show, Jay Leno’s Garage. Now, whether you’re a car enthusiast or not, Local Motors is a pretty big deal. Not only have they designed and created the world’s first road-ready line of 3D printed cars, they have recently announced that the LM3D Swim model will be the first commercially available 3D printed car, on sale as early as next year for just $53,000. Jay Leno’s Garage, a popular automotive web series that grew to be an even more popular one-hour primetime television show aired every week on CNBC Prime, featured Local Motors in its fifth episode of this season, effectively bringing 3D printed automotive technology into the pop culture spotlight. The series covers all things automotive, including classic cars, super cars, restoration projects, and of course, the latest in automotive technology. Every episode is hosted by Jay Leno himself. In the recently-aired episode, Leno talks to Local Motors CEO and co-founder, Jay Rogers, tests drives the 3D printed Strati, and even tries to smash a 3D printed plastic part with a hammer, though to no avail. “You can’t talk about the future of automobiles without talking to Jay Rogers,” said Leno as he introduced the beaming CEO. While discussing the future of autmobiles with Leno, Rogers described Local Motors’ process as “democratized innovation,” pointing to their co-creation methodology. While the customizable LM3D Swim will be manufactured mostly with 3D printing, the company will soon be naming an automotive partner for the production of the vehicle’s powertrain and chassis. Furthermore, the final design for the LM3D Swim was elected during the company’s Project Redacted design challenge, in which they invited influential designers to come up with completely unique blueprints for the car of the future. Not so coincidentally, Leno himself acted as celebrity judge during the Project Redacted challenge, using his car expertise to help select Washington-based Kevin Lo as the first-place winner. After introducing the technology, it was time to give the viewers what they really wanted: Leno actually driving a 3D printed car. First off, Local Motors lent him their electric vehicle mule, based on the Rally Fighter Chassis. Next, Leno and Rogers took a pit stop in the garage to take a look at the materials used to make 3D printed cars. Since it is still a widespread misconception that 3D plastic parts are inherently weak, Rogers invited Leno to literally shatter that perception by taking a hammer to some 3D printed car parts. Even after taking a heavy beating, the parts showed no signs of damage. Finally, the moment of truth: Leno stepped into the stylish and sexy 3D printed Strati—the first 3D printed car to be fully made and assembled in just six days. While Leno was able to take it for a spin around the block, remarking on what a great achievement it was that the car he was actually driving was truly 3D printed, there was one tiny hitch: Local Motors forgot to charge the electric battery. Despite having to be physically pushed back to the garage, the always-smiling host didn’t seem too put out. “At Local Motors, we are hell-bent on revolutionizing manufacturing,” Rogers has said in the past. “Car manufacturers have been stamping parts the same way for more than 100 years. Now we have the technology to make the process and products better and faster by linking the online to the offline through DDM. This process will create better and safer products,

far from an expert on 3d printing, but to me it looks like two things. One is a way to design and custom manufacture one-off or limited-run parts right in your shop. That's pretty cool, but I get the impression that the process is slow, and the materials are too expensive for more than limited use. The other side of 3d printing seems to be a sort of Netflix for objects. You can download a design and make it at home, instead of having to order it from someone and have it shipped in. I guess that's good in some situations. However, I really don't see how either of these would apply to a production EV. ANd then there's this quotation from Local Motors, which frankly sounds like gobbledegook to me: "At Local Motors, we are hell-bent on revolutionizing manufacturing ... Car manufacturers have been stamping parts the same way for more than 100 years. Now we have the technology to make the process and products better and faster by linking the online to the offline through DDM. This process will create better and safer products, and we are doing just that." Huh??? Maybe I'm missing something, but 3d printing in this setting looks suspiciously like just another technical bandwagon for folks seeking investors' money to ride around on and wave their banners. Hi Bruce, Thanks for going through all the articles and posting the best. I do a similar function for my 'day job', so my appreciation for what you do is that much greater. My daughter likes the combination of a Verizon iPhone and a tethered iPad for connectivity. I have ATT, and the connectivity isn't as good much of the time. Not sure if either system is what you're looking for. Have a great week!
