[EVDL] SamTrans seeks Electric-bus to begin a pilot program
% They'll need to factor in a quick charger with the bus cost % http://www.smdailyjournal.com/articles/lnews/2016-02-08/samtrans-inches-toward-going-electric-cap-and-trade-funds-sought-to-pilot-new-bus-program/1776425158101.html SamTrans inches toward going electric: Cap and trade funds sought to pilot new bus program February 08, 2016 Samantha Weigel San Mateo County transit officials are seeking state funds set aside for greenhouse gas emission reduction efforts as they slowly build momentum toward an electric bus pilot program. The SamTrans Board of Directors met Wednesday and approved applying for nearly $1 million in cap-and-trade funds — the first money that would be set aside for the agency to embark on testing all-electric buses in San Mateo County. Yet as it will take time to accumulate enough funds to pilot a new program in this evolving industry, SamTrans has also secured more than $25 million in state and federal funds to purchase 50 new diesel buses. Jeff Gee, a Redwood City councilman who sits on the SamTrans board, said it was important to ensure the county gets its share of cap and trade funds by applying for the grant — the amount of which is set by the state. “Hopefully with next year’s allocation, we can start to get enough money to at least do a pilot program,” Gee said. “The board is very interested in a pilot program using electric buses, it’s just a matter of getting the funding to do that. So this grant helps, but we can’t do it with the grant by itself.” Unsure of exactly how much is needed to begin a pilot program, electric buses alone currently cost between $1 million and $1.3 million a piece, according to Gee and SamTrans spokeswoman Tasha Bartholomew. Gee noted there’s much to consider in crafting a viable program such as comparing the cost of a battery with how long it can hold a charge, choosing an appropriate route and purchasing charging infrastructure. Yet as EV technology continues to advance, Gee said hopefully it will become more affordable. “It’s a constant evolution of technology and the focus is on the batteries,” Gee said. “We’re hopeful maybe by year two or three (of the grant cycles), the battery technology will have improved so much that the cost of the buses will come down.” Currently, SamTrans spends about $2 million a year on diesel fuel for its buses that provide about 1 million rides per month. It already began investing in alternatives by replacing some of its aging fleet with 25 diesel-electric hybrid buses starting in 2013. “SamTrans is committed to finding sustainable transit solutions and, over the years, the agency has worked aggressively to reduce emissions and look at new technologies,” Bartholomew said in an email. “We are still keeping an eye on the industry and if we are able to transition our entire bus fleet to zero emissions someday, it’s going to take time and a lot of funding because electric buses are very expensive to operate.” As cities throughout the county finalize their climate action plans, it’s become clear that fumes from vehicles is the number one contributor to the area’s greenhouse gas emissions. Even though it may take time, SamTrans and other transit agencies may soon face new laws requiring them to make the investment. Now, Gee said they’re hoping to get ahead of the legislative curve. “There’s two big issues. One, climate change; and if we can go to a carbon free bus or a low carbon (vehicle) moving people around, that’s better for the environment. Two, there’s the discussion at the federal and state level to make transit districts go to electric buses. So rather than be told, why not go and invest in it,” Gee said. “Why wait? Especially here in California and Silicon Valley with the innovation here … And, it’s the right thing to do.” [© 2016 San Mateo Daily Journal] ... http://www.jeffgee.org/contact-jeff.html Jeff Gee, councilman https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeff-gee-b4780567 ... http://www.samtrans.com/schedulesandmaps/maps.html SamTrans bus route maps For EVLN EV-newswire posts use: http://evdl.org/evln/ {brucedp.150m.com} -- View this message in context: http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/SamTrans-seeks-Electric-bus-to-begin-a-pilot-program-tp4680450.html Sent from the Electric Vehicle Discussion List mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org Read EVAngel's EV News at http://evdl.org/evln/ Please discuss EV drag racing at NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)

Despite the car hitting the market in 2017 only, one Quebec dealer already has 33 pre-orders for the small electric hatchback. Bourgeois Chevrolet, located in Rawdon, is no stranger to EV enthusiasts. It received the very first 2016 Chevy Volt delivery anywhere in North America, and customers from as far away as British Columbia make the trip to buy an electrified automobile. According to Inside EVs [ http://insideevs.com/chevrolet-bolt-ev-demand-shown-with-33-pre-orders-at-one-dealer/ ], Bourgeois Chevrolet sold a record 287 electrified vehicles in 2015, including 192 new and 95 used. For the year, Bourgeois sold 704 vehicles in 2015, which means that over 40% of sales were plug-in hybrids and EVs. This is quite impressive considering Rawdon is approximately 80 kilometres away from Montreal. Additionally, Bourgeois claims to have 43 pre-sold copies of the 2017 Volt [pih], which entered production last week. The sales team at this Chevy dealer must be commended for converting so many car buyers to plug-in hybrids and EVs. [EVDL] EVLN: Tesla-3 EV Preorders starting 2016/03/31
http://motherboard.vice.com/en_uk/read/elon-musk-will-take-tesla-model-3-preorders Tesla Will Begin Taking Preorders on its Make-or-Break Vehicle 11 February 2016 JASON KOEBLER Elon Musk said starting March 31, Tesla will begin to take preorders on what many believe to be the electric car company’s make-or-break vehicle, the Tesla 3. The Tesla 3 is expected to launch early next year, and represents the company’s first foray into the “affordable” realm—Musk said on Twitter that the family sedan will cost roughly $35,000 and will come out sometime early next year. Reservations will cost $1,000 and will start March 31 in Tesla stores and April 1 online. Even though gas prices have fallen dramatically, Tesla has seen high demand for its Model S luxury sedan and its SUV crossover, the Model X. Musk announced on an earnings call Wednesday that it expects to ship between 80,000 and 90,000 cars this year, which would beat investor forecasts. All of this is good news for those betting on a bright future for electric cars. Tesla’s early problems were managing to get its cars designed and manufactured on the tight deadlines it had set for itself. The Model X, for instance, finally began shipping late last year after a two year delay. With the Model S and the Model X, Tesla has been working with relatively small quantities of cars—the company only passed the 100,000 cars sold mark back in December. And that’s why the Tesla 3 is being looked at as such an important car: It’s Tesla’s first attempt at launching a mass market vehicle. Tesla is building a “Gigafactory” in Nevada, which will be the world’s largest lithium-ion battery factory in the world and will be used to ramp up production of the batteries used in the Tesla 3. Meanwhile, General Motors announced the Chevy Bolt, an all-electric car that will cost $30,000 after a federal electric vehicle credit of $7,500 and will have a range of more than 200 miles. It’s expected to come out before the Tesla Model 3 and will compete directly with that car. And so Tesla’s future success likely hinges on whether it can deliver the Tesla 3 on time at the cost it’s promised. Tesla has missed lots of deadlines before, but with its production of the Model S and Model X seemingly under control and the Gigafactory on the way, perhaps the company is ready to make the jump to the mass market. [EVDL] EVLN: Tesla-S 85kWh discontinued to simplify model lineup
http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2016/02/09/tesla-motors-inc-drops-85-kwh-model-simplifies-lin.aspx Tesla Motors, Inc. Drops 85 kWh Model, Simplifies Lineup Feb 9, 2016 Daniel Sparks [image https://g.foolcdn.com/editorial/images/195002/model-s-australia_large.png Model S Australia ] Tesla gives Model S buyers a clear choice between maximizing value, range, or performance. Electric-car maker Tesla Motors has narrowed down its available Model S battery and motor configurations to just four options: single- and dual-motor 70 kWh configurations, and non-performance and performance 90 kWh dual-motor options. No longer included as a buying option is the company's 85 kWh battery option. The change in available configurations may serve to both increase production efficiencies, boost the company's average transaction price, and make purchase decisions for customers less confusing. The business case Here's the range and motor configurations that Tesla is utilizing for its current lineup, as well as starting prices: Specifications [(70-S is not dual-motor AWD) 70-S 70D-S 90D-S P90D-S Battery 70kWh 70kWh 90kWh 90kWh EPA-rated range 230mi 240mi 288mi 270mi 0-60 time 5.5s 5.2s 4.2s 3.2s (2.8s with Ludicrous speed upgrade) Starting price $70k $75k $88k $108k ] Previously, Tesla also offered an 85 kWh dual-motor option for a starting price of $85,000. When configuring an 85 kWh dual-motor vehicle, Tesla gave customers an option to purchase a range upgrade for $3,000, which essentially upgraded the Model S to a 90 kWh model. There are two main benefits for Tesla's business in this new, simpler offering of available Model S battery and motor configurations. First, average transaction prices will likely increase. By removing the middle battery option, Tesla is essentially forcing its customers opting for a vehicle with a bigger battery than its 70 kWh battery to pay an additional $3,000 for the 90 kWh battery. Second, producing fewer battery configurations could benefit the company's manufacturing efficiencies, and potentially help profit margins improve slightly. Value, range, or performance The real benefit, however, may be to the customers. By eliminating the 85 kWh option, Tesla has simplified its offerings. Now, buyers can choose distinctly between maximizing value, range, or performance. Value: For buyers looking for the best value, they can opt for one of the 70 kWh options, which both sacrifice on range compared to the larger battery options, but come at discounts of $13,000 or more to the 90 kWh models. Range: For some buyers where price isn't much of a factor, and who simply want the most range, the 90D Model S is the obvious choice. Performance: Also for buyers where price isn't much of a factor, the obvious choice for those who want maximum performance is Tesla's P90D. The company has both eliminated and introduced a range of different battery sizes in the past. Previous battery sizes that the company no longer sells include 40, 60, and the 85 kWh options. And Tesla introduced its 70 and 90 kWh options in April and July of last year, respectively. It's likely that Tesla will continue to experiment with battery sizes. I've even speculated that the company could reintroduce the 60 kWh option at some point -- though in light of this recent simplification to Model S battery options, it doesn't seem as likely anymore. With regards to the larger batteries, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has noted that the company will likely improve range by about 5% annually, on average. The company's Model 3, which is scheduled to begin sales by the end of 2016, will likely bring back smaller battery options, as Tesla has said the vehicle will have a starting price of $35,000 -- half of the starting price of the cheapest Model S ... [EVDL] Free in-home charging to Tesla owners in Sweden
http://www.hybridcars.com/tesla-slated-to-power-free-in-home-charging-in-sweden/ Tesla Slated to Power Free In-home Charging in Sweden February 9, 2016 Tim Healey Tesla has pioneered a network of Superchargers, and now it’s working to bring free in-home charging to Tesla owners in Sweden. The California EV purveyor is also working with Swedish electric company Skelleftea Kraft to use 100-perecent renewable energy in its Swedish supercharging network. This new partnership will allow Model S owners in Sweden to get free in-home charging for up to 28,000 miles (45,000 km) over a three-year period. “Skellefteå Kraft is a highly sustainable brand that really stands out approaching the world’s contemporary challenges. It requires motivation, creativity and perseverance. We like partners with a strong maverick profile. With this agreement, our Swedish customers can enjoy even more environmentally friendly electricity free of charge, whilst we at Tesla can look forward to our first energy company partnership that can serve as a role model for how to build sustainable partnerships in the future,” Tesla Director for Nordic Countries Peter Bardenfleth-Hansen said in a statement. Tesla delivered almost 1,000 of its Model S to buyers in Sweden in 2015, and even though power rates in Sweden are already low, this news means a Model S owner could recharge for almost no cost. There are currently 14 superchargers, all powered by hydro-electric or wind power, across Sweden. Electrek notes that the sales increase for Tesla in Sweden comes close to a 275% increase, according to registration data. So Tesla is growing quickly in the country, and this partnership may help the brand grow even more quickly – after all, getting nearly free charging will help offset the high sticker price of a Model S. Furthermore, this partnership could serve as a model for other carmakers who sell electric vehicles in Sweden. From there, if need be, I can tackle transforming those known unknowns into knowns on my own. Initially, I'd like to build a tabletop motor so that I can practice software control specifically of starting the motor, controlling regen during deceleration and acoustics, and controlling speed. I agree 100%. Just like EV's a solar boat is not for -everything-, it is for going slowly where the trip is tha value, not getting anywhere in particular. My solar boat only goes 3 MPH, yet when we take people out for a cruise, its like sailing (but don't need wind). You just enjoy everyone's company, the wine and cheze and the boat just goes where we tell it. Oh, and it has shade for 10 people... No, never plan on taking it out of the creek, nor in any but the best weather. but as a party boat, it is perfect! http://aprs.org/alternative-energy.html <== about 40% down the page. See the existing solar boat and the planned "solar deck" to be built this summer. (to provide 3 kW of grid tie, the 99% it is not in use)... Cant wait to eventually program it with a waypoint tracker and just let the party barge take us on the several pre-ordained cruises. Select from the 1,2,3,4,5, or 6 hour trip menu and sit back and enjoy the trip and the company. Please stick to the author's request and that was to dialog with those that have such experience, rather than interjecting oneself into areas beyond actual use. > A real canal/narrowboat would be great. 8. Some due diligence would suggest, that outside of a true narrow canal (no waves, no flow and no tides), a flat bottom narrowboat is the worst of all designs for intracoastal waters (our MOG's stated area of navigation). Narrow boats, a type of canal boat, are NOT to be used on large bodies of water and tidal flows (fast water for a narrowboat is 2-3 mph). From a UK canal boat site.. Never go out in fast water. Locks on rivers have a guide showing the height (and therefore speed) of the water, don't go out onto the river if the guide is "in the red". A car (with which you have experience) may pull off the road, park and have remedy to any common road situation unaffected by tide, wind, waves and sinking. as 2 speeds would be fine. No detail on the prop, which needs to be as large as possible turning slow rpm for most eff. What kind of outboards, inboards, KWHR and what it does now on them in speed, range. Not likely to ever be more than a few mile range at low speed on electricity. But driven slow like 4mph with more panels, only 1.5hp of solar now. Answer these and we can go from there. Doing EV boats one needs to start with a sailboat, mono, cat or tri hulls with much lower drag. A real canal/narrowboat would be great.
