VW's EV model could also have a range of 310 miles and a 15-minute recharge
time

The VW Group can leapfrog its rivals in electric car technology if it
achieves scale across all of its brands effectively, according to the firm’s
technical development boss, Frank Welsch.

Volkswagen boss Matthias Müller revealed at the Geneva motor show that the
firm would launch an electric family car with a range of 500km (310 miles)
and a recharge time of 15 minutes for a price lower than that of an
equivalent Golf. Insiders had previously told Autocar that the VW Group’s
highest management sees the potential for it to be the first iconic electric
car and the perfect vehicle to banish memories of the Dieselgate emissions
scandal.

I don't know about Lee Hart, but I have 3 Ping batteries (so far), and all
have been 100% reliable.

I am using them as they're intended, for low power applications.

They use pouch cells. These are not high power batteries. They're
designed for e-bikes, not car-size EVs. Li Ping himself, who unlike many
Chinese suppliers is in this business for the long run, used to not
recommend sustained loads over 1C. The cells have evolved over time, and he
is also now a little more optimistic:

"Based on longer than 7 years experiences and feedbacks from our customers
(from V2.0 to V2.5), we can confidently say our battery cells are capable of
2C continuous current draw without significant capacity reduction for many
years. The cells can be also drained at higher C rates if more years of
battery life is not expected."

So I would recommend a Ping battery for a 50-100lb e-bike or scooter, but
not for something weighing half a ton or more.

There are lots of other Chinese suppliers, some MUCH cheaper. I did a lot
of research on the e-bike forums before I bought my batteries. Some of the
posts are no doubt out of date, because Chinese suppliers come and go fairly
rapidly. The sense I got though was that if you buy a nameless wonder
battery and it fails early, you often can't count on the supplier to be
around - or to care if he is. Also, take all specs with a grain of
(lithium) salt.

Ping got mostly positive reviews, so that's what I chose despite the price.
But as I say, I don't recommend them for high power use.

Caveat emptor and good luck!

Ford CEO Mark Fields has confirmed that the automaker is in development of
an electric vehicle that will contend with the likes of the Chevrolet Bolt
and Tesla Model 3.

According to Automotive News, Fields said that Ford plans to be “among the
leaders or in a leadership position” when it comes to delivering a
mass-produced, affordable electric vehicle with a 200-mile range.

“Clearly that’s something we’re developing for,” Fields said during Ford’s
first-quarter earnings conference call. Fields has openly discussed the
likelihood of a Ford EV as far back as November 2014, when he told Yahoo!
Finance that a dedicated Ford EV was consistent with the company’s product
direction.

Fields did not offer up any additional details on the project, but it is
widely believed that Ford’s EV will be dubbed the Model E. Ford holds a
pending trademark application for the name, which both honors the vehicle
that made Ford a household name and serves as an (un)intended jab at Tesla.

It is also surmised that Ford will produce this vehicle at its $1.6 billion
small car production facility in San Luis Potosi. It is believed that
production on the Model E will get underway in 2019.

Ford, in the meantime, is leaning on the Focus Electric to keep it current
in the EV race. The 2017 Focus Electric will up the 76-mile range of its
predecessor to a nice, even 100 miles, but that would still only be half
that of the Bolt and Model 3. Kevin Layden, director of Ford’s
electrification programs and engineering, told Auto News that it his
belief—and perhaps the company’s—that the Focus Electric will hold the line
just fine until such a time where the Model E is ready to roll.

“I think right now with the launch of the Focus Electric at 100 miles, it is
going to satisfy a big chunk of the population,” Layden said. “It’s going to
be really affordable and a step up from where we are now.”

[EVDL] EVLN: SoCal Hwy99 gets public EVSE, & more in the works for Interstate 5

% Why is this a big deal? For a state (CA) which has been the example of

Electric car charging stations are in the works along both Highway 99 and
Interstate 5, including the south Valley by the end of next year.

The California Energy Commission has approved nearly $9 million in grants
for the installation of fast chargers along major state freeways and
highways to allow electric vehicle drivers to travel from San Diego to the
Oregon border without worrying about running out of energy.

In the Valley, EV Connect was funded along Highway 99 from Wheeler Ridge
north. Another firm, Charge Point, has been selected to build along
Interstate 5.

Along Hwy. 99, the preliminary plan calls for charging stations in Selma at
the Home Depot, in Visalia at Staples at Caldwell Avenue and Mooney
Boulevard, in Delano at Home Depot and two sites in Bakersfield at the
Flying J and a nearby hotel.

Along Interstate 5, stations are funded at the Grapevine, at the
Buttonwillow exit, at Harris Ranch and Highway198, Santa Nella and Lathrop.

Statewide, the stations will offer fast chargers at 41 sites along major
routes on Interstate 5, Highway 99 and Highway 101. Fast chargers allow
vehicles to fully charge in 20 to 30 minutes. Additionally, 40 sites will
have one Level 2 charger, which charges electric vehicles in about four to
six hours.

Plug-in hybrids and electric cars, such as Tesla and Leaf models, can use
the public chargers with an adapter.

California has a a fleet of about 200,000 electric vehicles sold since 2011.
State officials hope continued incentives to buy electric cars, longer life
batteries and the construction of more charging stations will convince more
consumers to buy these clean-air vehicles.

The state gives permission for single-occupant vehicles with a Clean Air
Vehicle Sticker to use carpool lanes, as well as rebates of up to $5,000 for
new zero emission or plug-in hybrid light-duty vehicles.

The trend of electric vehicles getting bigger batteries and thus longer
ranges continues with the recent announcement that the 2017 BMW i3 will come
with a 33-kWh battery good for 114 miles of driving.

Looking to banish memories of the dirty Dieselgate scandal, Volkswagen will
shift focus to alternatively powered vehicles.

One of the first to hit the market will be a dedicated EV, which could be
priced below an equivalent battery-powered Golf if the company effectively
achieves scales of economy across all of its brands, according to Autocar,
quoting the VW technical development chief, Frank Welsch.

The electric vehicle is believed to ride on the new MEB platform, which will
serve as a foundation for future electric cars from the Volkswagen Group
that will hit the market by the end of the decade: "The MEB platform toolkit
gives us the perfect opportunity to gain scale by using the platform
solution in as many was as possible. If we can achieve scale, then all sorts
of things will become open to us, from reduced costs to faster R", Welsch
said.

Volkswagen's new EV is expected to provide a maximum driving range of up to
500 km (310 miles) and recharging the batteries will apparently take just 15
minutes ...

An updated version of the e-Golf is also around the corner, with a new
battery pack that should allow a total driving range of up to 300 km (186
miles), significantly more over the current iteration's 190 km (118 miles)
in Europe and 172 km (107 miles) in the United States. The revamped e-Golf
is expected to go on sale at the end of 2016 or early next year.

Report – VW now claims electric vehicle cheaper than comparable Golf
May 5, 2016 Aurel Niculescu

According to the latest report, Volkswagen considers they can develop and
market an electric car cheaper than an equivalent Golf.

If the rumor turns out to be true we’re wondering why the top brass didn’t
consider this in lieu of lying to everyone and stealing money from the
clients and authorities through its deceitful emissions scam. Anyways,
according to the report the insiders say the company makes a business case
for an EV selling for less than a comparable Golf – though only if they are
able to efficiently achieve the necessary scale across the majority of
brands. This is part of course of the strategy to wipe clean our brains with
environmentally-friendly vehicles that should redirect our attention from
the Dieselgate scandal.

Volkswagen is going to spearhead the eco plan with its new MEB platform that
should underpin all green models from now on – with numerous electric s
coming to the market before the turn of the decade. VW claims it will
deliver about 20 plug in and electric vehicles by 2020. VW’s chief, Matthias
Müller, even tipped us to the idea of VW having an electric family car with
a top range of 310 miles (500 km) – which is entirely douable if we look at
Tesla. The point where the VW manager turns to sci-fi is when he claims a
full recharge of the vehicle’s battery would last just 15 minutes. And the
latest report also claims the executives are looking for a price lower than
a Golf – if the company manages to achieve scale across its entire roster of
brands to drop the production costs and hasten research and development.

Western Australian companies work to cash in on lithium boom
May 2, 2016

Dozens of Western Australian companies are working to cash in on a global
lithium boom that could reignite the state’s struggling resource industry.
FTBA
There is renewed hope for Western Australia's struggling mining industry
with one resource in hot demand – lithium.

Due to the unprecedented interest in electric cars and renewable batteries,
lithium miners are developing new projects across the state.

In the middle of iron ore country is one of the greatest discoveries of the
sought-after resource, with Pilbara Minerals' Pilgangoora mine set to go
into construction later this year.

It is one of 20 companies working to get lithium mining projects up and
running in Western Australia.

"We are in essence going to be the world's number one lithium producer," Ken
Brinsden, CEO of Pilbara Minerals, told 9NEWS.

The mine has promised hundreds of new jobs for unemployed FIFO workers.

"(There is) excitement in the mining industry. A commodity in demand and as
result fantastic opportunities for Western Australia," Mr Brinsden said.

The interest in lithium is being pushed by the sales of electric cars, which
currently account for three percent of the motor vehicle market and expected
to reach 22 percent of the market by 2025.

Tesla is leading the charge — in a month it has already pre-sold 400,000 of
the Model 3 electric car, even though it won't be released until 2018.

"Electric vehicles are coming," Kevin Johnson from Argonaut said.
