To stop a cheap, stupid, or non-networked charger that hasn't cut back its current from overcharging cells. 4. So it can balance faster, as when commissioning a new pack with cells that arrive at different states of charge. 5. To be able to balance *while driving*. If you top-balance and the cells have different amphour capacities, they will go dead at different times. If the BMS can transfer charge from stronger cells to weaker ones, then you can increase the effective capacity of the pack, and thus your range. That said... I don't think this particular BMS can do any of these things. It does not appear to have any way to deal with the heat produced by many cells bypassing at 1.5 amps, nor to be able to transfer charge between cells rather than just burning it up as heat. -- A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. -- Antoine de Saint Exupery -- Lee Hart, 814 8th Ave N, Sartell MN 56377, www.sunrise-ev.com/balancer.htm ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org Read EVAngel's EV News at http://evdl.org/evln/ Please discuss EV drag racing at NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)

Cezeta scooters were only manufactured from 1957 to 1964 but gained a small cult following thanks in part to their distinct look, which came as a result of placing the gas tank at the front of the vehicle, over the front tire. Many fans referred to them as “pigs” because of their looks, whereas others joked that the location of the tank turned the scooter into a kind of land-based torpedo. The original Cezeta was driven by a 175cc two-stroke single [ice], but the newly resurrected Cezeta 506 will get its go from a three-phase brushless electric motor. The revival comes at the hands of Briton Neil Eamonn Smith, who first spotted a Cezeta while attending a wedding in the Czech Republic. “I was instantly in love,” said Smith. “It was a fantastic thing and I bought one.” Which led to buying more and more, and more. After a number of restorations, Smith adopted the technique of replacing the scooters’ old engines with electric motors – an idea that ultimately led to his desire to resurrect the brand. Smith says the new Cezeta 506 will have a range of roughly 150 kilometers (93 miles) and will be capable of hitting a top speed of 110 km/h (68.3 mph). He says his company plans to manufacture 1,000 scooters this year. [© RideApart rideapart.com] http://www.carscoops.com/2016/07/cezeta-506-is-retro-electric-scooter.html Čezeta 506 Is The Retro Electric Scooter You Didn't Know You Wanted 7/24/2016 BOGDAN ZOLTAN Back in the late 1950s a Czechoslovakian motor scooter manufacturer called Čezeta, gave Piaggio’s Vespa a run for its money. Now it is back in electric form. Čezeta’s 501, 502 and 505 scooters were built from 1957 to 1964, and albeit the company’s lasted only a few years, it managed to create a cult of followers with its unique and interesting design - achievable by adopting the fuel tank above the front wheel. As odd as it may look, this solution left room for a substantial luggage compartment beneath the long seat, making the scooter a practical companion. Originally, the 501 and 502 models were powered by a ČZ two-stroke single-cylinder motorcycle engine, giving a top speed of 55 mph (88 km/h), but Neil Eamonn Smith reckoned the eternal style and charm of the vintage can be brought alive nowadays with the help of an 11kW electric motor. In 2012, the very first Čezeta type 506 prototype was made in Prague, and now the company inches closer to make the funky-looking scooter available for production. Its shape was subtly redesigned and simplified with minimalist details, making for a sleek sculpture. The hand-built scooters will be available with an app allowing its users to reprogram the speed and acceleration, check out the nearest charging stations or listen to your favourite music via built-in Bluetooth speakers. Smith says that with the help of the 11kW motor, the Cezeta is fast enough for use of highway speeds, reaching 90-110 km/h (56 – 68 mph). It will also have a range of 100-200 km thanks to the long-range 5-10 kWh Panasonic batteries, and a 50-year longevity. Interested? You can reserve yours now for as low as €7,000. A staffing contractor for Volkswagen in Chattanooga plans to hire about 25 people weekly over the next couple of months and 700 more employees by year's end, an official said Tuesday. "We're seeing hiring pick back up (for VW)," said Lucus Hiler of Aerotek, which is bringing on production and logistics workers for the factory. "A couple of classes have already been hired." Nearly 25 people showed up in the first 10 minutes of a job fair at the Tennessee Career Center in Eastgate Town Center on Tuesday, which was the second such hiring event this month. Samuel Houser said he once worked for a contractor at Volkswagen's plant and he's hopeful of hiring on again. "The money is excellent. The environment and supervision is helpful. It's a company where you can grow," the Chattanooga man said. VW is readying for assembly of a new midsize sport utility vehicle late this year, and a top official said this week the company is weighing production of electric cars in Chattanooga by 2020 in the wake of the emissions scandal. Mattie Moran, the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce's director of workforce development and education, said five more job fairs are planned through the end of August for VW. With unemployment down in Hamilton County to 3.7 percent in May, time will tell how pressed Aerotek and VW will be to find workers, she said. "Once we get past the first couple of job fairs, we'll see how it goes," Moran said. Unemployment dropped in May to a 15-year low in the county. Starting pay for the VW jobs is $13 per hour with bonuses and pay rate increases every six months. A $1 premium is added for night-shift work, Hiler said. People who want to work in production at VW are first employed for a period of time at Aerotek before later being officially hired by the automaker. VW is spending $900 million, including $600 million in Tennessee, to expand its Chattanooga factory to make its new SUV. The company has said it plans to ultimately hire 2,000 more employees to its workforce of about 2,500. Beyond the new SUV line, VW could invest even more in Chattanooga if it decides to also build electric vehicles at its production facility. Hinrich Woebcken, the new head of VW's U.S. unit, said this week Volkswagen plans to build electric vehicles in North America by 2020, potentially at its Chattanooga plant, according to The Wall Street Journal. He said Chattanooga or a production facility in Mexico are among options being considered for the production of the new electric vehicles. He declined to give specific details on the search, but said multiple models will be built in North America. Karl Brauer, senior director of insights for Kelley Blue Book, said if VW could make an electric version of the SUV it plans to assemble at the plant with a range of 200 miles or so before recharging, that would position the carmaker well in terms of sales. Such a vehicle also would give the automaker an appearance of being innovative in that arena, he said. Re: [EVDL] 24 cell BMS
I am surprised at people wanting an extremely large balancing current as that should never be needed unless your cells are either defective (too high self-discharge in some cells) or you are drawing current at inappropriate places (tapping the pack). As an example, the Leaf BMS has 10 mA (0.01 Amp) balancing current by using 430 Ohm balancing resistors. All 96 series cells are only connected to the BMS which apparently is guaranteed to draw extremely low current (everything is designed for very low current in their BMS, even the voltage reference works with microAmps of power supply) and the cell quality is apparently so good that their self-discharge does not vary enough to need more than this extremely low current. There may be reasons to have a large balancing current, but they escape me. BTW, even though the Leaf BMS is part of the vehicle, it is self-contained in the battery box with only OBD coming out for status and it works and balances stand-alone as long as all 24 BMS front end chips are powered (4 cells per chip). With the (free) Leaf Spy you can monitor the BMS stand-alone, as long as you connect a Bluetooth ELM327 OBD interface. There is a way to use the BMS on anything from 48 to 96 cell packs, because the BMS has opto-isolation mid-pack, so you can overlap the BMS inputs if you have less than 96 cells (but at least 48 cells). The only thing you lose is the ability to break the pack midsection, unless you add another opto coupler in the RS232 data line that daisy-chains all front ends together.
