But with this diesel powered empire toppled by scandal, and a growing field of electric vehicles entering the marketplace, the e-Golf's role in Volkswagen's arsenal has become much more important. But can this electrified Golf stand out against the competition while still retaining the Golf's winning formula? At first glance, the exterior styling does not scream that your driving an electric car. In fact, it looks like a run of the mill Volkswagen Golf, right down to its fake exhaust inlets and hatchback proportions. Wheras other EV offerings are all about drawing attention to their owner, the VW is all about fitting in, and that may please buyers that prefer a more subtle wrapper for their gas beating purchase. The e-Golf's exclusive touches are minimal, but blue exterior lighting, blue badging, and model exclusive 16-inch wheels make it standout from the rest of its Golf siblings. A new front bumper and optional LED headlights also give the e-Golf a more sophisticated personality and help it stand out in night time driving. The interior of the e-Golf also takes a conventional route, and like the exterior, the cabin shares much of its lineage with the standard Golf. A bigger 8.0 inch infotainment screen has replaced the old 6.5 inch unit, and we noticed better clarity as well as higher resolution with the new screen. Our SEL Premium grade tester did not have the optional 12.3 inch Digital Cockpit instrument package (an optional extra) but the analog gauges still looked great, and offered plenty of information as well. Interior materials were also high quality for the most part, but there were still some obvious cheap plastics, and we did notice occasional creaks when out and about in the e-Golf. The biggest update however is better range and performance, with the 2017 e-Golf now boasting a driving range of 125 miles (a sizable gain from the old model's paltry 83 miles.) This is mainly due to its bigger battery which has a 35.8 kilowatt hour capacity, and it benefits from several upgrades aimed at enhancing electrical efficiency. Our tester had Volkswagen's standard wall charging system, but while Volkswagen claims that charging the e-Golf is a relatively easy process, our first attempts did not live up to this promise, with the fussy e-Golf initially refusing the advances of our wall outlet. This forced our tester to spend a good portion of the day plugged into the outlet at my main job (a local bodyshop,) before we were able to work out the problem (a connection issue,) and get it charged at home later that evening. Like others of its breed, the e-Golf uses a rear mounted charging port, which means it needs to be backed up into charging stations to get charged. This layout also forced us to do some creative parking in the driveway to help the cord reach into our garage. Driving the e-Golf around town also revealed another surprise, and that's how natural it is to experience. Wheras other EVs often come saddled with spongy brakes, and bland handling traits, the e-Golf is actually a fun car to drive, with quick handling and responsive braking that defies EV stereotypes. Acceleration is also brisk with our tester making the sprint to 60 mph in 9.1 seconds, though it feels quicker than that, and we suspect Volkswagen is hiding a few tenths of a second more in its veiled hat of tricks. Ride quality was also solid, and it really shows just how much potential the MQB platform has when it comes to this arena. For those that want to squeeze even more efficiency out of their e-Golf, the car does come with two different eco modes, but we advise sticking with normal mode since both eco modes sap eagerness and responsiveness out of the e-Golf. Handling in our tester served

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV, EPA-rated at 238 miles combined, removes most daily range anxiety and allows owners to cover predictable commutes for several days before plugging in, if they choose. But what about more strenuous usage? Our reader D Gadotti of Western Canada put a white Bolt EV through its paces in some of the snowiest weather any electric car may have seen. What follows are Gadotti's words, lightly edited by Green Car Reports for clarity and style, and photographs. Around Christmas, there was a cold snap here in Western Canada, accompanied by abundant snowfall. I decided to take a break from plowing and shoveling and go back-country skiing for a couple days at Rogers Pass in Glacier National Park. It's a trip of 300 km (186 miles) from my home in the Kootenays to Rogers Pass, but there are no charging stations there—so I would need enough range to continue on or return to Revelstoke, a minimum of 370 km (230 mi). I was curious to see how my Bolt EV would perform in cold weather. I had equipped it with the meanest studded winter tires I could find. So I tossed my warmest sleeping bag on the back bench, put some food and drink in an insulated chest, loaded my ski equipment ... and off I went. RANGE The trip to Rogers Pass is one I could have done on a single charge earlier in the year. Throughout the summer and fall, I got more than 400km (250 mi), confirming reports that the EPA range rating of 238 miles (383 km) is conservative. Once I started using the heater to keep the cabin warm and, presumably, condition the battery, my Bolt’s range dropped alarmingly to around 250 km (155 mi) or less. The number varied depending on outside temperature, desired cabin temperature, and fan speed. I truly wish I could read KWh rather than projected range remaining, but alas Chevy does not provide that information. If I don’t have far to go, or if the outside temperature isn't extreme, I’ll pamper myself and set the car to 21 degrees C (70 deg F), but on this frigid-weather trip I kept it to a more frugal 17 deg C (63 deg F). While rating agencies give “combined” ranges, meaning city and highway driving—a bad habit inherited from cars with engines—a much more relevant datum for EVs would be to give ranges in temperate and cold conditions. Some of us live where winter takes four months or more of the year. Knowing how far our vehicles can take us in winter is a crucial consideration when buying. BATTERY CONDITIONING IN THE COLD The morning of December 24, I drove to Rogers Pass, where I got my ski permit. The car's built-in thermometer showed -20C (-4F) in the sun. I planned to spend Christmas Eve at the Asulkan cabin in the back country, skinning a 900-meter (3,000-foot) elevation gain on my skis. Meanwhile, my Bolt EV would be parked in the notoriously shady parking lot, right where a pocket of cold air often stagnates in that bend in the valley. I had no idea how cold it would get there overnight. When I returned, late in the afternoon of the 25th, the Bolt had been parked in temperatures below -20C for 30 hours. It had used up almost 40 km (24 mi) of range to keep its battery conditioned, and had 80 km (48 mi) of range left, just enough to get back to Revelstoke. Good thing that route is mostly downhill. I was just grateful that the doors opened; I had read horror stories of owners being locked out when the 12-volt accessory battery failed. There is a backup way to unlock the car, of course—but the owner's manuals, both on paper and the electronic version on my tablet, were of course inside the locked car! (EDITOR'S NOTE: They're available online too, if

Now we are even getting to see some performance testing of the Model 3, which could be quicker than Tesla leads us to believe. The Model 3 isn’t really supposed to be a performance EV at this point. Tesla is still trying to push the Model S performance versions in that regard, but future versions of the Model 3 with dual motor could also prove competitive. Nonetheless, DragTimes got their hands on a Model 3 and decided to test the acceleration of the current version with RWD motor and Long Range battery pack. They used a VBOX to test the 0 to 60 mph acceleration time and the quarter-mile time. For the quarter-mile, they achieved a 13.376 seconds time at 103 mph. Tesla hadn’t released any number for the quarter-mile so that’s our new reference point. As for the 0 to 60 mph acceleration, Tesla has been advertising 5.1 seconds for the Long Range battery pack option. Dragtimes beat that on its two runs – including one in 4.6 seconds, which is significantly faster than what Tesla is advertising. Electrek’s Take It’s nothing new. Tesla owners have often achieved better times than Tesla has been advertising even with previous vehicles and sometimes it has to do with the testing method. But in the case of the Model 3, you have to wonder if Tesla is not trying to maintain the appearance that the difference between the Model 3 and Model S is greater than it actually is in order not to cannibalize sales. Of course, you can get way faster Model S vehicles than Model 3’s right now, but Tesla’s slowest Model S now accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, which is getting pretty close to what Dragtimes achieved ... [EVDL] EVLN: 2019 LEAF competing with BMW 1 Series hatchback ice +

January 1st, 2018 James Ayre [images https://c1cleantechnicacom-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/files/2017/12/426212889_Production_begins_of_the_new_Nissan_LEAF_in_Europe-e1513782793108.jpg https://c1cleantechnicacom-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/files/2017/12/2019-Nissan-LEAF-570x353.jpg https://c1cleantechnicacom-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/files/2017/12/2019-nissan-leaf-specs.png ] Is the 2019 Nissan LEAF designed to lure buyers who would otherwise go with conventional vehicles from a premium brand (like BMW, Audi, etc.)? That was the question posed and answered by a very interesting article published on Push EVs recently. The idea (backed by what seems to be insider information that the aforementioned website seems to often have access to) is that, based on performance and specs alone, the 2019 LEAF will be able to compete with the petrol and diesel BMW 1 Series hatchback — without even factoring in “green” credentials. It will simply be a better car in most ways. This would offer another reason why Nissan is putting its ProPILOT semi-autonomous driving suite into the LEAF before almost any other car — that’s the kind of thing premium car buyers expect, or are at least enticed by. One of the advantages of all-electric vehicles is that they are relatively simple, and thus cheaper to make (minus the battery packs), so as battery costs drop, there’s the option to sell relatively high-spec cars with fancy extra features at affordable prices (once battery costs fall enough). Rather than paraphrase here, I’ll just highlight some of the most interesting parts of the Push EVs article in question: “Make no mistake, behind closed doors Nissan expects the 2019 MY Leaf to compete with the petrol and diesel BMW 1 Series hatchback. It doesn’t care about the small electric BMW i3. “Performance and price wise, the 2019 Nissan Leaf can compete with the BMW 1 Series hatchback, furthermore the Leaf will have the refinement that only electric drivetrains can provide.” A helpful comparison of the two models (2019 Nissan LEAF vs. BMW 1 Series) is provided here: *LEAF specs in this text table are not official, but rather speculative with some insider info, with only the range coming from a leaked Nissan document. Needless to say, the information above was not publicly published by Nissan. This is the first we’re seeing 2019 LEAF specs. What’s worth remembering here is that around 10,000 BMW 1 Series hatchbacks are sold in Europe every month. If the 2019 Nissan LEAF does manage to steal sales from it, then that could represent a tipping point of sorts in the European electric vehicle market. Perhaps, though, such a tipping point will have to wait for the release of a new long-range Renault offering? Worth noting here as well is that the Tesla Model 3 is not expected to ship in large quantities to Europe until early 2019, probably around the same time as the 2019 LEAF. Re: [EVDL] Electric Mini Boat
My friend came up with the latest cool EV: an electric mini boat! He designed this 6’ length boat that can hold a full sized person. I cruised around in it a bit, and it was pretty fun. I too suspect it's for placid waters. But heck, it looks like it would be fun, especially for the looks it gets. :-) It seems like I saw something similar that was styled to look like a submarine.
