Inside Tesla’s Fremont factory, six red robot arms bob and weave over a
small piece of silver metal that will soon become part of a Model 3 sedan.

A clear plexiglass wall separates them from any humans who might be nearby.
Most of the time, however, no one is. Even in a factory that employs 10,000
people.

The arms perform their tightly choreographed work, then pass the part on to
another station, where another set of robots takes over. Meanwhile, an
elevated conveyor line slowly moves partially assembled car bodies overhead.

Since CEO Elon Musk delivered the first electric Model 3 sedans at a party
behind the factory last July, the company has struggled to rev up production
of the car, considered the key to Tesla’s financial success. Musk has blamed
the delays, at least in part, on over-automation, saying Tesla at first
tried to use robots for many tasks that are better handled by humans.

Now Tesla has finally reached its goal of building 5,000 Model 3s per week,
and the production line — opened up for a tour to The Chronicle this week —
is humming. And while Musk has talked about re-introducing humans into the
Model 3 process, it remains heavily, strikingly automated.

It is, in fact, quite different from the separate production line that
builds Tesla’s Model S sedan and Model X SUV elsewhere in the factory, where
employees in black shirts and baseball caps swarm over car bodies carried on
robotic carts. So pronounced is the contrast, it feels as if Tesla has
crammed together two factories under one roof.

“One of the challenges we had was to reduce human intervention as much as
possible,” said Charles Mwangi, Tesla’s director of body engineering, his
voice nearly drowned out by the Model 3 body line’s constant whirrs and
piercing beeps.

Musk has for years described his vision for the future of auto production as
“the machine that builds the machine,” an expression memorialized on
T-shirts worn by some of the factory workers. And to tour the Model 3 body
line does indeed feel like walking through an immense machine that may be
supervised by humans but doesn’t need their constant input.

Robots from suppliers Kuka and Fanuc — 1,028 machines in all — spin parts,
screw in bolts and weld, sparks flying behind the plexiglass. Flashing red
and yellow lights at each work station will signal when a particular robot
requires maintenance, while a green light indicates smooth operation.
Meanwhile, there’s almost as much activity — again, automated — happening
overhead as there is on the floor.

Tata Power will supply and install two fast-charging stations at the
Hyderabad campus of Cognizant while Tata Motors Finance will provide the
financial assistance need to procure the vehicles.

Tata Motors said it supplied ten Tigor Electric Vehicles (EVs) to IT major
Cognizant which would deploy them in its city campus as part of its
commitment to a sustainable environment on Wednesday. According to a press
release from Tata Motors, the automaker has partnered with Volercars, a
mobility solutions company that will be delivering this integrated solution
with the value-added service to Cognizant including on ground operations and
fleet management.

A batch of 10 vehicles was handed over by Tata Motors team to Cognizant
officials, at an event held here, the release said. Tata Power will supply
and install two fast-charging stations at the Hyderabad campus of Cognizant
while Tata Motors Finance will provide the financial assistance need to
procure the vehicles, it further said.

Tata had launched the Nexon AMT in the XMA variant at Rs 7.50 lakh
(ex-showroom, Delhi) for the petrol variant and Rs 8.53 lakh (ex-showroom,
Delhi) for the diesel variant on Tuesday. The Nexon AMT is available in the
XMA and XZA+ variants. According to data sourced from SIAM and CMIE, Tata is
also one of the biggest spenders on research and development in 2016-17
among 25 automakers in India.

President Electric Mobility Business and Corporate Strategy of Tata Motors,
Shailesh Chandra said, the company is committed to the government's vision
of e-mobility in India. "We are excited to be associating with Cognizant to
provide them with a comprehensive solution towards the goal of a sustainable
future, with our 'One Tata' approach, involving our other group companies.
We will continue to strengthen our portfolio of EV offerings across our
passenger and commercial vehicles, to meet future requirements," Chandra
said.

Executive Director of Cognizant, India, Ramkumar Ramamoorthy said, reducing
the carbon footprint through efficient use of energy and protecting vital,
irreplaceable resources are at the heart of his company's environmental
stewardship initiatives. "We are proud to lead by example and be one of the
first companies in India to embrace the potential of electric vehicles as an
innovative meeting ground of energy and mobility," he said.

I had a Jet truck from that era. The manual was huge. A little hard to 
understand. Some how I got it running.  Loved how it drove.  However it seemed 
inefficient.  The motor/controller was noisy. What voltage are you running?  Do 
you have a 12 volt battery? As an option you might think about a Curtis type

Before our next trip to Ludlow to further evaluate the EV1-B, I have some
questions:

 

Is there anyone familiar with the GE EV1-B controller willing to talk to me
on the phone and/or correspond by email and/or make a visit to see the car
to render technical assistance? All reasonable expenses would be covered.
Also Facetime video call assistance is an option.

 

Is there a way satisfy/bypass/eliminate the PMT requirement to rule that out
as a problem? I have trouble figuring how to understand its function.

 

If we prove a failure of the EV1-B controller does anyone have experience
working on this unit?

 

If demonstrated defective, are there repair options available sufficiently
local to Ludlow Massachusetts that can visit the site or are there sites we
can bring or ship the EV1-B controller? A typical forklift repair technician
may simply want to replace the EV1-B unit and not troubleshoot faults inside
the unit.

 

Is there a source for spare parts/technical support for the EV1-B controller
if we get inside the box?

If you have a load much larger that your BMS can handle I load diectlty to
the cells then use the bms some how to ALEART when the low voltages
happen.

[EVDL] Mini bms

When the mini BMS company stop selling they're Mini BMXs I started
exploring some of the ones sold on eBay for bicycles packs. I came across
one that I was pretty impressed with. It does a small amount of balancing
but can show all the battery voltages on your cell phone with download of
the app. The BMS board is not designed to run a relay but it will control a
small amount of amperage. I use a small power supply and a relay set up 2
run a contactor for the charger and a buzzer when in drive mode. I also
found that if you tap on one of the windows showing the individual cell
voltage that it will data log the cell voltage if left hooks to the
Bluetooth connection. You can adjust all parameters with a computer with
Windows 8 but not Windows 10. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out
how it works and there is not a lot of information provided by the
manufacturer. There's more information on our website
