Re: [EVDL] Best tire for a Nissan Leaf

2018-11-11 Thread Lawrence Rhodes via EV
I decided to get a new set of tires even though my tires had a few thousand
miles left.  The stock Ecopia is still the best choice. Costco has them for
under 600 dollars.  Wheelworks was a little more but I decided to get a
alignment too and Costco doesn't do alignments.   I found a broken off Phillips
head screw gun bit in the tire about 2 and a half inches long.  A hole was
through the tread.  It lost pressure quickly and I ruined the tire driving off
the Bay Bridge in San Francisco.  No safe place to stop.  Turns out a Sentra
doughnut will work on the Leaf.  Lawrence Rhodes

Bizarre. I've never blown a tire in 40 some years. And I've driven on a
lot of potholed roads. Are you sure you didn't hit something? Or, do you
wear your sidewalls thin by, say, rubbing up against the curb while
parking?

Tow-charging the Tesla Model 3 (part two). CRAZY results!!!
]

A courageous Tesla Model 3 owner did an interesting experiment with his
electric car by charging it through regenerative braking by towing it with
another car around the neighborhood.

Here are the results:

First off, you probably shouldn’t try this at home.

While it’s essentially the same as using the usual regenerative braking when
decelerating, Tesla specifically says to only tow its vehicles on flatbed
trucks in its owner’s manual.

If done properly, I don’t see it damaging the vehicle, but it’s not a great
idea to go against Tesla’s recommendation, especially when the warranty is
involved.

Nonetheless, YouTuber Tech Forum did it and it resulted in an interesting
experiment.

He did the test following the latest version 9 software update, which
resulted in more powerful regenerative braking for the Model 3 RWD.

They started at 227 miles of range – leaving some room for regen to get some
power back into the battery pack.

Using a Ford C-Max as a tow car, they towed the Model 3 for 1 mile and the
energy usage app showed 1,025 Wh/mile. Before the experiment, the app was
showing an average of 268 Wh/mile, which is somewhat normal for the Model 3.

Following the test, the system projected an overall range of 999 miles,
which of course doesn’t make sense and it’s likely the max range that it can
show.

While the range indicator showed that they added about 3 miles of range,
they were able to drive the car about 10 miles at the same low-speed that
they were tow-charging it for 1 mile.

General Motors will sell its practical, long-range battery-electric
hatchback – the Chevrolet Bolt EV – in the Brazilian market, the automaker
revealed today at the São Paulo Motor Show. The car should more than serve
the needs of the average Brazilian buyer, GM reckons, delivering about 380
kilometers of driving range on a full battery charge, where the average
commuter in the country racks up just 40 km over the course of a day.

“The changing needs of our customers demand new solutions, including
connectivity and electrification,” says GM Mercosur President Carlos
Zarlenga. GM Mercosur is the South American business unit concerned with the
Brazilian and Argentine markets. “At the same time, social trends related to
urban mobility and sustainability have changed the way people interact with
cars. Chevrolet will lead the electrification territory in the country with
the Bolt EV, a one-hundred-percent electric car that comes to democratize
this technology in Brazil.”

Brazil is one of General Motors’ largest and most significant markets in the
world, and GM’s history there stretches back nearly a century to 1925. But
the next five years will represent more change for the automaker – and for
the industry as a whole – than the last fifty years, according to GM Brazil.
The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV being launched in the market is a significant
marker of this period of rapid change, representing the start of GM’s
“Triple Zero” vision for the future in Brazil – that is, a future with zero
emissions, zero accidents, and zero congestion.

[EVDL] Government Exonerates EVs> up2 5yrold $-30k used EVs-only

Costa Rican Governments Exonerates Used Electric Vehicles to Promote Their
Use
November 9, 2018 Laura Alvarado

The Costa Rican Government announced a package of decrees and a directive to
promote the use of electric cars.

At the beginning of this year the Government approved the Electric
Transportation Bill which established several tax exemptions on new electric
cars of even 100% depending on the cost of the same.

This new decree benefits those that want to buy used electric cars of no
more than 5 years and a value of under $30,000.00 USD by exonerating them
from the selective consumption tax that corresponds to a 30% of the
vehicle’s CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) value.

Electric cars will not have a restriction of transit as it occurs today for
all other vehicles that have restricted transit once a week in the Great
Metropolitan Area.

The purpose of the bill is to promote the use of electric vehicles by making
them more affordable, and in this way reducing contamination and benefiting
the environment.

The Government is also working on switching the public sector vehicle fleet
to all electric cars.

The new regulations do not apply to hybrid vehicles but only 100% electric
cars.

KYMCO, one of the largest scooter manufacturers in the world, has
demonstrated an impressive commitment to electrification. The company has
already released a handful of electric scooters and introduced a new EV
battery standard.

Now the company has just dropped the veil on their newest electric vehicle,
the insanely fast and powerful SuperNEX electric superbike.

KYMCO’s new SuperNEX electric motorcycle

Taiwan-based KYMCO is known for their scooters, but today’s unveiling
sparked an entirely new direction for the company.

In a lavish event at the EICMA Milan Motorcycle Show, KYMCO unveiled the
SuperNEX, their new electric motorcycle superbike.

The SuperNEX is a high-speed, high power electric racing motorcycle that can
hit a top speed of 250 km/h (150 mph).

Its acceleration is on par with some of the fastest electric motorcycles
available.

The SuperNEX has a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 2.9 seconds, 0-200 km/h (124
mph) of 7.5 seconds and – for the truly brave – a 0-250 km/h (155 mph) time
of 10.9 seconds.

Those acceleration times are generally only achievable by highly experienced
and skilled riders. But on the SuperNEX, KYMCO has included Full Engagement
Performance (FEP) to help less experienced riders get the most out of the
superbike.

“With FEP, riders can always perform a perfect launch. During hard
acceleration, FEP ensures there is no wheelie or wheel slippage. During hard
braking, FEP prevents rear wheel lifting. When riding through uneven or wet
surfaces, FEP provides maximum traction.”

The level of FEP is also user adjustable, allowing riders to dial in the
perfect amount of assistance for their skill level.

To help increase the already insane torque needed to reach those speeds, the
SuperNEX sports a 6-speed transmission.

According to KYMCO:

“The 6-speed transmission allows riders to make use of the most optimal
power band of the motor to extract the full potential of the vehicle. The
gears help improve not only the efficiency and responsiveness, but also the
acceleration and top speed.”

In addition to adding a performance boost, KYMCO wanted to include a manual
transmission to give electric sportbike racers a realistic shifting feeling
that adds to the thrill of electric racing instead of taking away from it.
As KYMCO chairman Allen Ko explained it, “Shifting is the art of motorbike
riding.”

But that shifting won’t feel like your old gas bike because you’ll no longer
need to grab a handful of clutch. The SuperNEX will have clutchless
shifting, and a slipper clutch should help smooth out the ride during normal
downshifting.

Another innovation KYMCO has included in the SuperNEX is an Active Acoustic
Motor. Essentially, the bike amplifies the existing electric motor sound,
but offers user adjustability to the pitch and intensity.

“The sound communicates the rpm level and the load condition of the
motor. It constantly gives the rider situation awareness, so riders can
determine their timing for shifting the gear and applying the throttle. And,
with the rpm rising and the speed climbing, riders hear the surge of the
sound one crescendo after another. It is one of the most intense sources of
thrill for the sportbike riders.”

There is no word yet on when the SuperNEX will be available for purchase.
The model shown off tonight was just the initial prototype, but it appears
KYMCO is definitely planning on bringing it to production.

While we wait to hear about production plans, here are some more glamour
shots we grabbed at the unveiling.

KYMCO’s progress towards electrification

KYMCO’s unveiling today of their new SuperNEX electric motorcycle is just
the latest progress the company has made towards electrification.

Earlier this year, KYMCO introduced a line of electric scooters designed for
consumers. The scooters were based on their new Ionex battery standard, a
removable 650 Wh Li-ion battery.

KYMCO’s scooters were designed to carry multiple batteries. To make
recharging easier, the Ionex system includes battery charging stations.
Similar to those already deployed by Gogoro, Ionex batteries can be inserted
into KYMCO’s vending machine-style charging stations.

KYMCO followed up the announcement of their Ionex line with their new Ionex
Commercial. Electrek first broke the news on Ionex Commercial at the Paris
Motor Show last month.

Ionex Commercial was developed as a turnkey solution that allows companies
or governments to easily introduce fleets of electric scooters into their

BANGKOK - The tiny pink car crawled down a ramp before an expectant crowd,
then slid silently into the makeshift swimming pool.

But its floorboard stayed dry. And its engine kept running, as the driver
calmly steered his bobbing vessel around a corner.

Buyers of a new electric car who test-drove the vehicle in Bangkok on Friday
(Nov 2) got up close with this amphibious feature.

Called the FOMM One, the watertight battery-powered vehicle is designed to
help owners survive floods and transport them to the nearest dry ground.
FOMM stands for First One Mile Mobility.

Japanese national Hideo Tsurumaki invented it to help people survive watery
disasters like tsunamis, which has claimed thousands of lives in Japan and
around Asia.

Eventually, he headed to Thailand to set up a factory.

"Asean is a fast-growing area and Thailand is home to many Japanese (auto)
manufacturers," he told The Straits Times.

Mr Tsurumaki is now the chief executive of FOMM (Asia), a Thai-Japanese
joint venture which will be producing the first such vehicles for sale from
its factory in Thailand's central Chonburi province starting from February.

Thailand is home to the largest auto sector in Asean and has been offering
tax breaks to spur the production of electric vehicles.

FOMM Asia, as one such beneficiary, is exempted from paying corporate tax
for five years.

The car's 1.3m-wide frame seats a driver and front-seat passenger
comfortably, though there is little legroom for passengers who brave its
back seat.

Drivers grip a butterfly-shaped steering wheel and hand levers act as
accelerators.

There is precious little space in this car, which retails at 664,000 baht
(S$27,800). But FOMM Asia also plans to offer buyers roof racks, leather
seats and even wireless mobile phone chargers.

From Thursday (Nov 1) to Sunday, the company is turning a driving track in
Bangkok into an obstacle course for test drives. There, experts will push
the car near its limit of 80kmh and churn up gravel around tight corners.

But its most unique property is its waterborne capability, an attractive
feature in low-lying Bangkok which encounters flash floods so regularly that
one-time governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra once jested that those who want to
be truly safe from flooding should go live on a hill.

More tragically, a 41-year-old woman drowned in September when her pickup
truck stalled in a flooded underpass.

Turbine-like front wheels in the FOMM One control the car's direction in
water. The motors that power each front wheel are fully sealed and this
prevents the car from stalling.

"(The water level) can be as high as 3m, or 5m, no problem, it can 'swim' in
the water," FOMM (Asia)'s general manager Tananan Kanjanakuha told ST. Even
when fully loaded with four people, the car starts to float as soon as water
levels rise to 70cm, he says.

But the car is not something you would want to take for leisure cruises down
the river. At its fastest, it can move at just 2kmh in water.

In moderate floods, the car will keep its owner safe and dry - as the sodden
pedestrians wade past it through the water.

Electric bicycles are great, combining a lightweight vehicle with
near-effortless propulsion. But sometimes you just want to sit back and
relax a bit more. That’s when an electric pedal car might be right for you.

Now there’s an interesting new option coming to the admittedly small US
electric pedal car industry: the Screecher.

You’d be forgiven if you’ve never heard of Yarmouth, Maine, population
8,500. Besides the yearly Yarmouth Clam Festival, not a lot comes out of the
quiet city. Except for the Screecher, that is.

The Screecher is an electric pedal car or quadricycle. It has four wheels
and pedals, making it visually similar to a bicycle surrey you might rent on
vacation.

But unlike most quadricycles, this one is electric. And solar powered. And
affordable, at just $2,500.

Two 350W motors work in tandem to provide 700W of continuous electric assist
(adjustable to 5 levels), and 1,000W of peak power during acceleration and
hill climbing.

In fact, the Screecher electric pedal car can work in electric-only mode,
meaning you don’t have to pedal at all. Just twist the throttle and drive it
like a normal car. “Normal” being relative.

If you only want to pedal, that’s an option too. A belt drive connects the
front wheels to the user-supplied pedal power. And there’s cruise control if
you’d like a constant level of assist.

That electrical power is provided by a 48V 12.8Ah lithium-ion battery. With
just over 600 Wh of capacity, the Screecher electric pedal car has an
electric-only range of up to 20 miles (32 km).

The Screecher’s top electric speed is 15 mph, though the rider could
presumably add some additional pedal power to go even faster.

The acceleration isn’t going to force your head back, with a 0-15 mph (25
km/h) time of 5 seconds. However, that’s still better than a lot of cheap
e-bikes.

According to Leslie Gillert, President and Head of Engineering at Screecher:

“Our goal was to solve a particular problem: The lack of affordable,
electric-powered, carbon-neutral transportation. We did not set out to build
an expensive and over-engineered product, available to only a few. Our
design is elegant, functional, and simple, which offers greater stability,
comfort, and easier maintenance.”

The Screecher sports seating for two, or one person with room for cargo. It
can also be used for towing, so you could drag your kayak down the trail and
to the river, parking right by the bank.

The Screecher even folds down to roughly half its size. So you could
potentially put your pedal car in the back of your regular car, or more
likely SUV. At 120 lbs (54v kg) though, you might want to have a friend help
you lift it. Good thing there’s seating for two!

The Screecher features solar charging

In addition to Level 1 charging (i.e. plugging the Screecher’s removable
battery into a wall outlet in your home), the Screecher also includes a
roof-mounted solar panel. Actually, I wouldn’t call it so much
“roof-mounted” as “roof-replacing”. The solar panel is the roof.

The solar panel is rated for 100 W, and Screecher says it can recharge the
600 Wh battery in 4 hours.

However, I’m not sure that math checks out. While I’m not the leading
expert, I know a thing or two about small solar projects. By my
calculations, in good sunlight you should get be able to add about 50%
charge to your pack with those specs. So Screecher’s numbers seem a bit
optimistic there. But I could see getting a full charge in one full day of
good sunlight.

It will certainly charge faster than the roof mounted solar panels on a
conventional car.

In addition to solar and wall charging, there’s a third way to recharge the
battery as well: regenerative braking.
Screecher to begin production later this year

The Screecher isn’t the only electric pedal car out there. Two other US-made
electric pedal cars, the ELF and PEBL, both offer interesting enclosed
car-like experiences.

However, both are between 3-4x the price of the $2,500 Screecher.

Admittedly, the Screecher is rather bare bones when it comes to
accoutrements, compared to both the ELF and PEBL. But if all you need is a
simple electric pedal car that works, the Screecher has it for you in an
affordable package.

According to Screecher CEO David Eshelman:

“I see a significant market for Screecher in the growing market for
recreation and last-mile

The reason he can work on those voltage lines from the helicopter is that he’s
not grounded. It connects the voltage from the line to the cages and so he’s
the same potential there’s nowhere for energy to flow.

[EVDL] Much SAD news from California

2018-11-11 Thread Steven Lough via EV
So very sad to hear that Chris Paine's home has been added to the long
list of folks who have lost their homes to fire.

I have had the great pleasure of visiting twice, at various EAA and Plug
In America events that Chris held in his home.

You can check out some pictures on my facebook page, and other pages
which folks and friends are posting.

Many of you have probably seen this, but it is pertinent:
Power line inspection <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGoaXZwFlJ4>

There is also an interplay between injury or death and voltage and current

Lot's of unsubstantiated/spouse tales house like current is and other grid
secondaries are more unsafe than higher voltage distribution
wiring...Because higher voltage traves on the skin, and 120, 240, 480
traves through one's core stopping the heart. You can get realls bad burns
from higher voltage, THat much is certain.

What exactly is higher and lower in this context? What amperage is too
much? Coil discharge from a car coil is certainly notable (20KV+), but not
much current and very short duration.

Where on the continuum do the bits of an EV fit in?

stock tire still the best option? Got 45 k out of this set.  Still good tread.
Is there a doughnut out there that fits the bolt pattern? Lawrence Rhodes
