[EVDL] No Tesla-3 charging @L3-175kW from HyperEVSE
https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/23/175-kw-hypercharger-doesnt-charge-tesla-model-3-at-all/ 175 kW Hypercharger Doesn’t Charge Tesla Model 3 … At All (Video) February 23rd, 2019 Kyle Field [video https://youtu.be/BmfR-18hltI Bjørn Nyland Model 3 fails charging at 175 kW Hypercharger ] Bjorn Nyland loves running around in a variety of electric vehicles to explore what is possible and, well, what is not possible. Just a few short days after the first Model 3s were delivered to customers in Norway, he encountered a Model 3 owner attempting to use a 175 kW hypercharger and found that no charge could be delivered. He documented the process in typical Bjorn style, with a quick video that shows the hypercharge station where he and the owner gave the process several attempts. The blue LED on the Model 3 charging port seems to indicate that the car recognized that a charger was plugged in, but could not successfully initiate a charging session at any speed. The charging protocol communication typically works like this: The car sees the charging station asking what speed/power the car is capable of charging at, and after the initial “handshake,” it proceeds to dole out the charge at the negotiated speed. From the video, it is not clear which party in the transaction didn’t want to make a deal, but the charge does not start. The issue is likely just a minor software issue that can be resolved with a firmware update. The Tesla Model 3 and these new 175 kW hyperchargers are both new entrants to the market. The Tesla Model 3 brings the most advanced electric vehicle technology to the party and the 175 kW hypercharger is a rare bird, in any market. EV fast chargers typically offer around 50 kW of charging power, and non-Tesla ones offering 100kW to 150 kW have started popping up in the past year or so, but very few in the 175 kW range are anywhere in the world. The fact that this chance encounter even happened is worth getting excited about. We are far beyond the days of a 70 mile EV hypermiling to get to the next 25 kW charging station. We can now explore how quickly a 300 mile charge can be delivered. These brand new stations should be able to accomplish the task in a matter of minutes. The future is exciting, and thanks to the people on the front lines of deploying the solutions — buying the vehicles and putting them to the test in the real world — we can all join in on the fun as it unfolds. [EVDL] dink Cadillac: KeepRising, unprofits, Kettering, fires, Grill-Gun-Ports Terrify
[ref http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/dink-e-caddy-launch-3yrs-away-market-cn-point-of-focus-tp4692771.html ] https://www.reuters.com/article/us-autoshow-detroit-gm-cadillac/gm-electric-vehicle-strategy-last-chance-for-cadillacs-success-executive-idUSKCN1P82F7 GM electric vehicle strategy last chance for Cadillac's success: executive January 14, 2019 Nick Carey, Joseph White DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Co’s strategy to make its luxury Cadillac marque its lead electric vehicle brand is the automaker’s final opportunity to turn the unit around and make it a success, a top executive said on Monday. “We don’t have any chances left with taking Cadillac to a really new place,” newly appointed GM President Mark Reuss told Reuters on the sidelines of the Detroit auto show. “This is pretty much it.” “So we really have to hit the ball here,” he added. “It’s my job to make sure we do.” In a move first reported by Reuters, GM said on Friday that a Cadillac would be the first vehicle built on the No. 1 U.S. automaker’s “BEV3” platform to challenge electric carmaker Tesla Inc. Tesla’s market capitalization is higher than GM’s, even though Tesla has never posted a full-year profit. Reuss did not elaborate on what would happen if the multi-year effort to make the Cadillac brand more profitable failed. But GM has demonstrated repeatedly over the last two years a willingness to exit unprofitable markets and kill weak car lines in North America. In November it put five North American factories, including four in the United States, on notice for closure and cut almost 15,000 jobs. GM has struggled for years to make Cadillac more competitive. Last spring the automaker replaced veteran auto executive Johan de Nysschen as head of the Cadillac brand. Appointed in 2014, he outlined bold plans to reshape Cadillac’s lineup with a $12 billion product program. He moved Cadillac’s headquarters to New York in 2015, saying the brand’s executives should be closer to the urban customers who had for years shunned it. In a belated bid to catch up with rapidly shifting U.S. consumer preferences, Cadillac said in 2017 it would shrink its lineup of sedans and add sport utility vehicles and hybrid and electric vehicles. Cadillac U.S. sales fell more than 1 percent in 2018. Late Sunday GM unveiled its new 2020 Cadillac XT6 SUV that goes on sale later this year and will be built in Spring Hill, Tennessee. GM said in 2017 it planned by 2021 to introduce a new dedicated flexible electric vehicle architecture and an advanced battery system to support the development of at least 20 new models in the United States and China. Much of Cadillac’s future growth is expected to come from China, the world’s largest car market. Slideshow (6 Images) Reuss said “one of the first” fully electric Cadillac models using the new platform would be on the market around 2022. He said it was too early to tell how long it would take for Cadillac’s entire lineup to become electric, but he anticipated a combination of electrified and combustion engine models “for quite a few years” to come. “All I’m focused on is what we’re doing right now…” Reuss said, “and getting momentum back in Cadillac.” Additional reporting by David Shepardson; Editing by Cynthia Osterman Our Standards:The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. IIRC EVDLer Jeff Major was involved with at least one such trial, and he might have some comments if he's tuned in. Solectria also used supercaps experimentally as current levelers in EVs, in an effort to get more range out of lead batteries. They worked, but the rapid voltage fall of capacitors meant they needed a DC:DC converter, and its (in)efficiency was a problem. Also, the range improvement was very dependent on how the vehicle was driven. http://www.evdl.org/docs/supercap_leveler.pdf David Roden - Akron, Ohio, USA EVDL Administrator = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = EVDL Information: http://www.evdl.org/help/ = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Note: mail sent to "evpost" and "etpost" addresses will not reach me. So, you either parallel a whole bunch of them and try to figure out a way to go from 2.5v at thousands of amps up to some useful voltage or you put them in series and watch as the capacitance plummets. I don't really know how they plan to get around this aspect of capacitors. They just aren't that great in series but you need high voltage for a car. Maybe don't cancel that Tesla Model 3 reservation just yet. Tesla didn't attract nearly half a million reservations for the Model 3 because electric vehicles are lame. Quite the contrary: Instant torque, one-pedal driving, and minimal running costs mean EVs should appeal to even ardent fans of internal combustion. Yet Tesla hasn't closed a significant number of those sales, with many would-be buyers presumably unwilling or unable to spend $45,000 or more for the Model 3 as it is currently offered. With no sign of the promised $35,000 version and Tesla's federal tax credit winding down, perhaps it's time to consider other options. You won't get Tesla's luxury cachet in the alternatives, which come from mass-market carmakers, ones that sell on price. You won't get much choice, either. Currently there are just two EVs that sticker below $40,000 and boast battery packs large enough to allow driving in excess of 200 miles on a charge, although a third will go on sale soon. The Hyundai Kona Electric arrived early this year and, alongside its gas-powered variants, made our 2019 10Best Trucks and SUVs list. Its starting price of $37,495 matches the Chevrolet Bolt EV's, which was a 10Best car in 2017 before it had any competition. Nissan's Leaf Plus will go on sale shortly, with a more powerful, 215-hp electric motor and a larger, 62.0-kWh battery pack than the standard Leaf carries, allowing it to stretch its range another 76 miles, to 226. Unfortunately, Nissan announced the new model as we were conducting this test. The Bolt has changed little since its introduction for the 2017 model year. It pairs a 200-hp motor with a 60.0-kWh lithium-ion battery pack to deliver an EPA-rated 238 miles of range. Our test car was a top-of-the-line Premier, which starts at $41,895, a price inflated by extra chrome, fancier wheels, and heated leather front and rear-outboard seats, among other niceties. Optional equipment—including the crucial $750 DC-fast-charging option, some active safety tech, and upgraded infotainment—added $2125, bringing the cost to an almost Tesla-like $44,130. And although you can still buy a Bolt and receive the maximum $7500 federal tax credit for purchasing a new EV, that amount gets cut in half starting April 1. Much like the Bolt EV, the Kona Electric uses a 201-hp motor to power its front wheels, although Hyundai's unit makes an extra 24 pound-feet of torque, for a total of 290. Its battery pack is larger, at 64.0 kilowatt-hours, which gives the Kona an EPA range of 258 miles. Hyundai has sold few electric vehicles in the U.S. to date, which means tax credits for its vehicles won't be drying up anytime soon. In fact, supplies of the Kona Electric are likely to be limited for the foreseeable future. As of this writing, it's available only in California, though Hyundai says it plans to begin distribution in Oregon and other CARB-compliant states in the future. Our Kona Electric was a range-topping Ultimate model, which came with every bell and whistle, including a few not found on the Bolt, for an estimated $44,000. Notably standard on the Hyundai is DC fast charging, which brings us to the elephant that accompanied us on our trip: charging. While this drive up the California coast was principally a test of two vehicles, it was also a chance to come to grips with the patchwork charging infrastructure that owners of non-Teslas must use. So let's start there. Third prize is you're fired, which is what should happen to dealership employees who park service vehicles such that they

https://www.euractiv.com/section/electric-cars/news/poland-to-open-electric-vehicle-factory-build-tailor-made-car/ Poland to open electric vehicle factory, build tailor-made car Feb 20, 2019 Sam Morgan [image https://www.euractiv.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2019/02/full_polonez_east_news__770-770x450.jpg Poland has not had its own mass-produced car mark since the demise of companies like Polonez / Flickr Languages: Français ] Polish energy companies are set to pool their resources and build an electric vehicles factory, as Warsaw targets 1 million EVs on the road by 2025. A joint venture set up by Poland’s state-owned energy companies will foot most of the bill for the project, with the ultimate aim of developing a home-grown electric vehicle. A spokesperson for Electromobility Poland, the company behind the project, said that the as-to-be-yet-unveiled car will be “tailored to the needs of Polish customers in terms of price, accessories and parameters, but also attractive for European customers”. The spokesperson added that Poland is “the largest internal market in Europe without its own national brand. Therefore our main aim is to create a producer which will operate on the automotive market and sell EVs under its own brand name.” Given the early stage of the factory project though, Electromobility Poland was unable to comment on the exact location or budget. However, industry sources suggest that the project will cost around €1 billion. Clean vehicles expert Julia Poliscanova told EURACTIV that the announcement is “great news” but warned that EV manufacturing is “highly energy intensive so more effort needs to be put into decarbonising electricity grids”. The power behind Polish plugs is indeed an issue as the Eastern European country still relies heavily on coal, although it has recently made steps to clean up its energy and is making inroads into renewable energy generation. If the EV factory sees the light of day, it will add to Poland’s already impressive e-mobility aspirations. The country is home to one of the biggest battery plants in Europe and there are even award-winning electric bus companies firmly established too. Its strategy is paying off too, as German car giant Mercedes announced in January that it will open its own battery plant in Poland, adding to its global production network. Parent-company Daimler plans to debut 10 full-electric cars by 2022. In order to climbe the 85 percent gradient, the Audi e?tron technology demonstrator was equipped with a special quattro powertrain with two electric motors on the rear axle and one electric motor on the front axle. The technology demonstrator achieved a total boost output of up to 370 kW and wheel torque of 8,920 Nm (6,579.1 lb-ft). This ensured full performance on the steep gradient. Audi also modified the software with respect to drive torque and torque distribution for the special conditions on the “Streif”. 19-inch wheels with spikes developed specifically for this driving event provided the necessary grip on snow and ice. “We already proved the mettle of the electric SUV last year in a number of Audi e?tron extreme events” said Peter Oberndorfer, Head of Product and Technology Communications. “From Pikes Peak to the salt plains of Namibia to the high-voltage test bay in Berlin – the Audi e?tron prototype mastered the greatest of challenges. With the sensational drive up the ‘Mausefalle’ we have pushed the boundaries even further and demonstrated all the technical possibilities of quattro technology in an electric car.” Driver Mattias Ekström, the World Rallycross champion and two-time DTM champion, added that conquering an 85 percent gradient sounds impossible at first, and that even he was impressed with the way the car handled such difficult terrain. For the greatest possible safety, the Audi e?tron technology demonstrator was equipped with a roll cage and a racing seat with a six-point harness. The vehicle itself was equipped with a belay, through which a safety cable was run. There was no pulling device. Audi had a strong partner at its side for this project: the Austrian beverage producer Red Bull. The two companies are long-standing partners of the Hahnenkamm Race and conducted this event together. The Audi e?tron technology demonstrator also illustrated this collaboration with a special set of decals. Whether that means electric bicycles, e-scooters, e-skateboards, e-unicycles, e-motorcycles or any other number of weird little electric vehicles, I’ve ridden just about all of them over countless thousands of miles. And while the majority of my saddle time has been on electric bicycles, spending the last five months on a GenZe 2.0 electric scooter has changed me. Five hundred miles later, I’m an electric scooter convert that has finally kicked cars goodbye. Here’s my story. The GenZe 2.0f electric scooter My GenZe 2.0f electric scooter rolled up last September. It was fairly unassuming as it backed down the ramp and into my life. A simple scooter, white with a black cargo box. A 7-inch color touch screen adorned the handlebars. Two bug-eyed mirrors gave it a bit of personality. Certainly no babe magnet, but it would do. “Cool” I thought. With a top speed of 30 mph (48 km/h) and a range of around 28-34 miles (48-54 km), I was excited, but wasn’t expecting to be blown away. But as it turned out, I was blown away. Big time. To put it simply, the GenZe 2.0 electric scooter has been a game changer for me. I’ve always been an electric bicycle guy, but I soon discovered that the GenZe 2.0 electric scooter improved upon all of my e-bike pet peeves. With a 30 mph (48 km/h) top speed, I could keep up with city traffic better compared to an e-bike. The GenZe got me off the shoulder and into the lane. And because the scooter has a much larger physical presence, cars suddenly gave me space. In fact, they didn’t just give me space – they gave me a spot! Suddenly I was one of them, a true motor vehicle. I owned the lane, and they let me. I proudly cruised along with the flow of traffic, taking up my rightful place. And in the Cambridge/Boston area where I ride, traffic rarely surpassed my 30 mph limit anyways, so I was usually golden. In the rare case where I found myself on a faster road with someone behind me, I’d just scooch over and let them by. With its built-in GPS, I also didn’t have to worry about my scooter getting stolen. Plus it’s a lot harder to carry off a 232 lb (105 kg) electric scooter than a 55 lb (25 kg) electric bicycle. The electric scooter turned my commute from a semi-stressful slog to a fun thrill ride. Suddenly trips were no longer chores, they were opportunities to cruise around! And with my newfound respect on the road, the experience was finally a pleasure instead of a battle. Check out my original video review ...: Utility of an electric scooter So I was king of the road – great. But that only matters if the vehicle is actually useful. In this case, “useful” is an understatement. With 30 miles (51 km) of range, I can go anywhere in the city and back without a charge. In fact, I usually only charge once or twice a week. It’s just a city, how far can you really go? And charging is simple enough too. I live in an apartment so I remove the battery and charge it upstairs. If I had my own garage then I could charge even easier with the battery left on the scooter. Plus the battery has a built-in charger, so I don’t have to remember to carry one with me. All I need is a $7 C13 cable (the AC power cord usually used for computers). And if I’m ever worried about having enough range to get home, I can charge while I’m out. Most restaurants, offices, campuses and other buildings won’t notice or mind if you plug in your phone or laptop to charge. Pushing that kindness/ambivalence a bit further, I found the same was true for charging a battery the size of a briefcase. [image] (L1) This is all I need to charge

A spokesperson for Davie Fire Rescue said the crash caused the Tesla to burst into flames. Paramedics pronounced the driver dead at the scene. Witnesses at the scene said the Tesla was traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash. Police have closed a portion of the southbound lanes of Flamingo Road near the crash. Police advised drivers to use alternate routes. In May, two teenagers were killed when their speeding Tesla crashed into a wall in Fort Lauderdale. The crash caused the car's electric engine to catch fire. The National Transportation Safety Board found that the Tesla's lithium ion battery, which was the source of the fire, reignited twice -- as police transported the car away from the crash scene and again when investigators tried to remove the battery from the burned-out remains of the vehicle. Tesla has defended its electric-powered cars, saying high-speed collisions can cause fires in both gas and electric vehicles. The Seabubbles team demonstrates how up to six people can fit into the Bubble Taxi The Bubble Taxi offers clean, quiet and comfortable commuting over the water The Seabubbles system uses fly-by-wire controls to self-stabilize the watercraft as it flies Making its US debut in Miami this week, the Seabubbles Bubble Taxi is a five-seat design about the size of a family car, with a sleek shape reminiscent of a flying car from The Fifth Element. The Bubble Taxi prototype runs two props on a 20-kilowatt (27 hp) electric drive system, and once it hits around 13 kmh (8 mph), its hydrofoils develop enough lift to make it rise up out of the water, allowing a top speed of 28 kmh (17 mph) as it cruises along about 40 cm (16 inches) above the water. Getting the main hull out of the drink cuts drag by around 40 percent, helping squeeze extra range out of its 21.5-kilowatt-hour battery, which is good for up to two hours of use or 40 km (25 miles) between five-hour charges. Flying on hydrofoils also takes the craft up above a lot of surface choppiness, making for a smooth and comfortable ride. Again, the numbers above are only for the prototypes – Seabubbles says its production machines will be faster, with bigger batteries, longer range and 35-minute fast charge times. If it looks a bit unstable riding on its single, central front hydrofoil and two rear ones, fear not: the Bubble Taxi uses gyroscopic and altitude sensors to measure pitch and roll angles constantly, and the steering system is completely fly-by-wire, allowing the boat to auto-correct for tilt and stabilize itself as you drive. Price is around US$200,000 according to TechCrunch – a figure that’ll look more attractive due to fuel and maintenance savings if you plan to put a lot of nautical miles on it. But its eye-catching, futuristic look as it glides silently across the water could easily make it a status item for the well-heeled. A handful of private buyers are already paid up and waiting for their watercraft in the United States, and the company is also preparing to start production for private and business customers in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rotterdam and Amsterdam ... [EVDL] EVLN: Kalashnikov re-boasts CV-1(retro-70's Izh) EV wages war on Tesla> (giggle)
https://www.realworldsurvivor.com/2019/02/20/kalashnikov-cv1-electric-car/ Gun Giant Kalashnikov Unveils an Electric Car February 20, 2019 [images https://cdn.athlonoutdoors.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2019/02/180824114252-kalashnikov-car-780x439.jpeg https://cdn.athlonoutdoors.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2019/02/kalashnikov-cv-1-rus-3_1600x0w.jpg https://cdn.athlonoutdoors.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2019/02/kalashnikov-cv-1-rus-6_1600x0w.jpg ] Kalashnikov has made the iconic AK-47 since 1949 and it has changed the way war was waged. It is hoping to do the same to the electric car industry. Yes, you read that right. Kalashnikov, world famous maker of the AK-47, a rifle described by Gunny Highway in Heartbreak Ridge as “the preferred weapon of your enemy,” is now promising (nay, threatening) to produce an electric car to rival Tesla. And it is pure Russian in every way. While it looks like the engineers at Kalashnikov have designed a whole new car, if you look carefully, you’ll see it is nothing but the updated retro styling of a Izh 21252 Kombi from the early 70s. If you’ve ever watched a period movie taking place in the Soviet Union, you’ve seen a boxy Izh. Kalashnikov Power Called the CV-1, its press release claims is can travel for 217 miles between charges and can zip from 0-62 mph in six seconds. For comparison, Telsa’s Model S can do it in 2.4 seconds. Kalashnikov estimates the CV-1’s motor can churn out 680 horsepower via a huge 90-kWh battery. That’s twice the size of the Leaf, which has an 8.0-second 0-60 time. But why such a large battery then? There are very few specs available. In fact the windows were blacked out at the show, meaning the interior was likely non-existent. And no pricing has been released. Keeping Up With the Teslas “The car is competing with Tesla because it’s currently a successful electric vehicle project,” Sofia Ivanova, Kalashnikov’s director of communications, told Russia’s RBC. “We expect to at least keep up with it.” They should aim their sights on something not so lofty, such as the Chevy Bolt or the Hyundai Ioniq. The car was unveiled to the press at Army 2018 in Moscow, an international tradeshow for the consumer and military market. In a very Russian way, they boasted: “This technology will let us stand in the ranks of global electric car producers such as Tesla and be their competitors. We were inspired by the experience of global market leaders in developing our concept.” [© realworldsurvivor.com] [dated] http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/EVLN-ak47-Kalashnikov-CV-1-r-320km-ts-80kpm-gt-a-pr-tool-td4691015.html EVLN: (ak47)Kalashnikov CV-1 r:320km ts:80kpm> (a pr tool) Kalashnikov wants to take on Tesla with a Soviet-style electric ‘super car’ Aug 28, 2018 Russian arms manufacturer Kalashnikov has unveiled a new “supercar” for the world's burgeoning electric car market. It appeared as part of Kalashnikov’s latest offerings at the Army 2018 International Military Technology Forum in Moscow. But behind the technology is a heavy dose of Soviet nostalgia.
