Re: [EVDL] Charging adapter for J1772?

2019-08-30 Thread Mr. Sharkey via EV

>> Anybody have experience with this or any other J1772 adapter?

Like several of the other respondents, I built my own after the local
utility put in two 30 ampere EVSE pedestals at the front of their
office in town.

The components to signal the EVSE to begin charging aren't at all
expensive, one resistor, and one diode. The expensive part was the
J1772 connector of the input end of the adapter ($69 on fleabay).
The whole thing is contained in a weatherproof cast aluminum junction
box, and connects via a short pigtail to the twist lock that engages
the AC input to my car.

Of course, the PFC20 charger will take any voltage you throw at it,
AC or DC, so the only thing to keep in mind is how many amps to set
the charge rate at. Our utility's pedestals are fully capable of
supporting the 20 amps the charger can pull. Elsewhere, I'd have to
be careful that no one wasted their money installing a 16 amp EVSE.

The customer service representatives at the front counter are always
disappointed if I come in to pay my bill and I'm not driving the EV.

Re: [EVDL] Charging adapter for J1772?

2019-08-30 Thread Tom Keenan via EV
I made an adapter to use J1772 level 2 when I had an older conversion car. The
charger used an input of 120v. I found that most ‘commercial’ locations have
220 volts at the plug, so I had to get a transformer that would put out 120v
when supplied with 220v.

When plugged in to the rare Level 2 charging station with 240v (such as at a
house) the transformer output would be about 160v, much higher than the charger
could use.

I say this because if your charger expects 240v, and it is
transformer-based, you may not be getting full charging voltage from the
typical Level2 charging station.

If it is OK with a wider range of voltage -around- 240v, than an adapter will
probably work out.

After that I have to put back in storage and the price will return to $2999

In theory, you can have a pair of EVSE outlets sharing the same feed,
so each one can supply 3Kw, but if both are in use then that capacity
has to be shared.

The one issue I have with those is that it doesn't prevent your charger from
trying to draw MORE current than the EVSE allows.
As long as you have a 3.3KW (or less) charger, it will likely be fine - Unless
plugged into a 120V 15A outlet where the EVSE is telling your charger to limit
itself to 12A (about 1500W). In which case you need a REALLY wimpy charger.

2019-08-30 Thread Paul Compton via EV
I'm currently working on a Tuktuk conversion. It's basically a repeat
of one built by Saietta, but with my standards of packaging, neatness
and extra safety.

We're using an AVC2 module;
http://modularevpower.com/Active_Vehicle_Side_Control_development.htm

They're mostly only sold via ebay and we had to ask for a refund after
we got no response from the seller. They are most likely an individual
and may for instance have had a family emergency, but it was somewhat
inconvenient. Happily, I spotted that EV West stock them and we were
able to get one that way.

Ultimately, I'm going to have to design my own as shipping and import
duties make it quite expensive.

Re: [EVDL] Charging adapter for J1772?

2019-08-30 Thread Michael A. Radtke via EV
Tom,

I've been using that J1772 adapter box on my 1979 Jet ElectraVan for
years. It works as expected. I went that route because the parts cost
nearly equalled the unit price for the adapter and it was already
debugged and working.

I elected to build my own EVSE for my I-MiEV because there was some
cost savings and I had some constraints that weren't effectively
addressed by commercial units. However, that's a different story.

Re: [EVDL] Charging adapter for J1772?

2019-08-30 Thread Jay Summet via EV

Not an adapter, but my J1772 input solution:

When I upgraded to Lithium batteries I also upgraded my charger to a
pair of TSM2500's from Thunderstruck motors and their EVCC (EV Charge
Controller).

I bought a kit with the chargers & controller (but re-used the Nissan
Leaf J1772 inlet from the salvage Nissan Leaf I purchased to get the
lithium batteries).

The EVCC basically connects between a J1772 inlet and (canbus enabled)
chargers and handles the pilot signal decoding, drive away protection,
BMS integration, etc...

I am currently making my own with this EV
Simulator:https://www.tindie.com/products/nsayer/evse-tester/

It will just "fake" the EVSE into starting the current flow, and I can put
whatever outlet i want on it.  The issue I can see is I won't know if its 110v
or 220v, but there are ways around this.

Isn't it? That was part of the "secret sauce" that distinguished the Force
from most other conversions. Instead of fabricating an adapter and bolting
the motor to the Metro's stock transmission, they developed their own light,
high efficiency transaxle. It's one of lots of little details that all added
up to unusually high efficiency. Rather high cost, too, but that's another
matter.

If you really want to fit it into the Insight, I'm sure there's a way. It
might involve extensive machine shop work, but if Lee Hart could adapt the
Sunrise from a front drive car to a rear drive with Thunderbird parts,
surely you can figure out how to bolt an AT2000 transaxle into an Insight.

If you have any interest in a different project, my rust-free 1991 Force is
for sale. It would be a project, though. The roof, windshield, and hood
were damaged when a tree fell on my garage.

http://drmm.net/ev/force/images/01-front-left-c.jpg

http://drmm.net/ev/force/images/12-roof-front-right.jpg

http://drmm.net/ev/force/images/13-windshield-b.jpg

One of the nice things about the older Force hatchbacks was that they
weighed over 400lb less than the later sedans, 2050lb vs 2460lb (both with
lead batteries).

That '91 would be a silky ride with your drivetrain in it. Add 180 volts
worth of lithium and it would lose still more weight and gain power. It'd
be a 1700lb car with 43kW, a better power to weight ratio than a Triumph
Spitfire. That little car would scoot nicely.

If things were different in my life right now, I'd snap up your transaxle
and motor in a heartbeat. So it goes.

Re: [EVDL] Subject: Differential issue

2019-08-30 Thread Tom Hudson via EV
Just picked up the truck from the shop -- smooth as silk!!! It really is awesome having it
back and as quiet as it originally was.

This was one of those odd, double-failure situations When we initially started getting
the vibrations and hearing the awful sound coming through the truck body, I figured
something was loose so I tipped the truck bed up and checked, and one of the two motors
had a couple of loose mounting bolts.  So I tightened those up and figured we were done --
but the vibration sound continued; only when under acceleration or deceleration.  After
replacing the batteries I took it in to get it looked at and they discovered the bad
pinion gear bearing. I must have a thing for pinion gear bearings -- Back in 1975 when I
started driving my first car was a 1960 VW beetle. Shortly after I started driving it it
developed a grinding noise and it turned out to be a bad pinion gear bearing!

I'm almost finished pulling all the EV parts out of the Force -- just the motor/gearbox
assembly is left.  Part of me would like to transplant them into our 2000 Honda Insight to
convert it into an EV if we can't sell it.  But after doing all the work to get the
half-shafts out (good lord, 22 years of corrosion made getting the bolts out of the struts
nearly impossible!) and looking at how all the front-end parts fit together I realized
just how tailor-made the Solectria gearbox is for the Metro, and I doubt I could fit it
into the Insight.  That gearbox is a thing of beauty.  The motors I'm keeping because they
could go into the truck; I guess I'll sell the gearboxes to get them to a good home.
