Re: [EVDL] Inexpensive retiree-friendly EV?
Our iMiev has served us really well, and is much easier to get in and out of than a Leaf, which is probably a consideration for older people. Some people can't get past the looks, but once you get in and drive it, you appreciate the spartan (easy) interface, visibility (as compared to the Leaf), space inside, ease of parking, and good capability. And, used prices are now quite low because a lot of the lease deals made back in 2013 are coming due. Low mile 2012 iMiev's are listed anywhere from $7.5 to $10k. If you want to go for a new one, some people have found some amazing deals (one guy under $10k) after the federal and state tax credits - though finding new might be a little harder as Mitsubishi hasn't shipped a lot of 2014 or 2016 models. (Incidentally, I don't know of any teething pains on the iMiev; ther's been only minor recall work since we had it, I'm not aware of any heat related issues on the battery pack and I've heard of only a couple pack failures in the US.) You can see several people on the www.myimiev.com/forum/ has a lot of information including several threads on buying a used iMiev. Good luck! Re: [EVDL] Cold Charging Lithium Experiences
Reviving this thread as we're having another very cold stretch here in the Eastern US. My batteries (SE130 CALBs) are still going, but boy do they sag when it's cold like this. It's annoying. I've been charging when my BMS sensors (atop each cell) are over 0C, which they have generally remained over the past few weeks despite the cold (thankfully my garage generally stays above 0C). But, my follow-up question on all this is if the BMS measurement is good enough. For example, I guess there is resistive heat that gets generated upon charge/discharge/shunting that probably make the sensors read higher than the cells themselves. How much, I don't know. Does anybody have any thoughts, experience on this? We've gotten down to -20C with a HIGH today of only -10C ... yet I'm charging. I didn't really want to do it, but I was dragging so much on the road with low SOC%, I had to, or risk having to really limp home. - Dan Gallagher http://www.evalbum.com/3854 -- View this message in context: http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/Cold-Charging-Lithium-Experiences-tp4667675p4673895.html Sent from the Electric Vehicle Discussion List mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org For EV drag racing discussion, please use NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)
Re: [EVDL] Electric bike information
Nice summary. I would say you're a little optimistic on total weight for an e-bike, I use a hub motor with a light 15ah 48v battery, and I'm easily 30 lbs over a standard, maybe just a quibble. The regen % however is a bit less realistic. I ride my e-bike up/down hills, and don't get more than 5% regen, on a good day. Also, the small amount of drag when the hub motor is off is more than slight, it's rather like cycling with a partially flat tire. Otherwise, nice general write up. - Dan Gallagher http://www.evalbum.com/3854 -- View this message in context: http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/Electric-bike-information-tp4671202p4671221.html Sent from the Electric Vehicle Discussion List mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org For EV drag racing discussion, please use NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)
Re: [EVDL] CALB bolt terminals getting hot -
I have on my to-do list to clean up the connections. With the BMS modules on there it's just a pain and I have to be very careful (I know - if I had done it at the beginning ...). I noticed the temperature first while driving from the BMS (Lithimate Lite) telling me one cell was getting over 40C. What was odd was I still got it on a cooler day (in the 70s), so it made me suspect the connections. So I checked a few of the bolt heads with my fingers for comparisons and noticed a few much warmer than others (none hot to the touch, just very warm instead of just warm or cool). I used the laser temperature gun just for some idea on the number ... and my fingers didn't lie ;). Those few were 4-5 C (10-12 F) warmer than the rest. I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill, just wondered if there might be others having similar issues with CALBs that I should be aware of (bolts, straps, terminals ...) other than just a layer of corrosion on the terminals. [EVDL] CALB bolt terminals getting hot -
I am using 38x130 ah CALBs in my Lectric Leopard and have had a too hot ( 40C) warning on my BMS come on a few times in the last month or so. Today, after a longer stretch of accelerating uphill to home, I checked some of the battery posts. Measuring with a laser sensor, several of them were around 33C , in a grouping, maybe 6 or 8 posts adjacent on the most positive side of my pack. Posts just a few cells more negative were much cooler, maybe around 26C or cooler. I checked the bolts to make sure they were tight, and didn't notice any real problem with the connections being loose. My only other thought is that perhaps (as has been discussed in other threads), these connections have corroded over time ... adding a little resistance layer (I didn't initially polish or use Noalox on those) that is now finally heating up. I am also using the original copper straps with steels M8 bolts. Are others noticing this kind of heat with the lithium cell terminals? Aside from just cleaning the terminals and putting on some Noalox, might there be other things to do? I installed these in Sep. 2012, so they are not quite two years in service. Re: [EVDL] EVLN: 2014 i-MiEV, most affordable EV in America arrives this spring
Tom ... there is no Wh or Ah meter standard, but many have done measurements using a Canion plug and application and posted on the myimiev.com forum. A quick google search like consumption speed site:myimiev.com results in some good threads about it (like this one: http://myimiev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22t=391) I agree a larger pack (to get say another 20 miles) would be really nice, that's what I'd ask for before anything else. I can't say I'd care too much about a 6.6kw charger - yes it would be nice on occasion, but we so rarely opportunity charge (not much available near us) that home charging is about all we get and suffices for probably 99% of our trips. - Dan - Dan Gallagher http://www.evalbum.com/3854 -- View this message in context: http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/EVLN-2014-i-MiEV-most-affordable-EV-in-America-arrives-this-spring-tp4669612p4669696.html Sent from the Electric Vehicle Discussion List mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org For EV drag racing discussion, please use NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)
Re: [EVDL] EVLN: 2014 i-MiEV, most affordable EV in America arrives this spring
In 2012 when I bought our iMiev, it was over $8k less than the Leaf (just before the S version came out), so that was a big difference for me. Once the S Leaf was introduced, it was closer in price, but was stripped of some items the iMiev had (better regen, quick charge) that the iMiev still seemed like a better value. For 2014 the iMiev is the clear price leader, unless you can survive with a two-seater / or absolutely need a five-seater. Peri - Winter and highway speeds do suck the iMiev's range. I'm pretty spartan with heat, and don't generally go on the highway, so could always squeeze 50 miles in winter, but we also had a really bad winter (1-2 months with temps often around 10-20 F) in PA, so more mild climates (not sure where you are), would be easier to manage over 50 miles generally. If you're doing mostly highway + cold in your Leaf to get 50-55, the iMiev is probably 10 less than that. - Dan Gallagher http://www.evalbum.com/3854 -- View this message in context: http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/EVLN-2014-i-MiEV-most-affordable-EV-in-America-arrives-this-spring-tp4669612p4669615.html Sent from the Electric Vehicle Discussion List mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org For EV drag racing discussion, please use NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)
