Clear as mud... I think your story is just what you say it is - a story...

Can you mention any company names? Or is that not possible...

I only know of two companies that are selling the TeslaTap, QCP and UMC-J1772,
and
they are both exactly the same... and manufactured by UMC-J1772. The TeslaTap
is
machined from a solid block of hard black plastic (don't know the name), and if
you ran over it with your car, you'd feel a bump and it wouldn't hurt the Tesla
Inlet at all... It is the J1772 Plug that would break first.

I don't know company names other than Tesla Tap is one company which uses the
website UMC-J1772.  I talked to Dave I think.  He said the difference between
units is one is urethane filled.  The other company doesn't fill with urethane.
Look at the advertisement I sent out. I think it says contact Dave.  I did.
Then I bought it.  Seems it is a guy that had made many conversions.  Made one
for himself.  Then started selling them.  Then started selling parts.

Cor, if you make this determination, please post. Especially the DC

I now recall that I have an old EMW charger, 10 or 12 kw, that is
supposed to operate on DC as well as AC.

If someone were bent on hacking a SuperCharger, running an onboard
charger on DC might be the simplest thing to do. Of course, that would
likely limit charge power to 10-15kw.

If anyone is interested, I am diddling with several lash ups to allow
low power Tesla charging from motel unit type heat/AC outlets. Since
distances are likely to be great, I'm attracted to using standard
extension cords adapted to 240vac connections.

Lawrence - In this case, I choose to support the manufacturer, UMC-J1772.

QCP is buying them from UMC-J1772 in volume at a discount and then reselling
them
at the same price as QCP. I could, as TucsonEV, done the same thing, but chose
not
to. One of my reasons is that there is the real danger of somebody who doesn't
know what they are doing (there are many EV owners that don't know what they
are
doing), might plug it into a supercharger and his Leaf might do something very
unexpected... as Willie pointed out.

UMC-J1772 states on their home page that they are the manufacturer of the
TeslaTap
etc...

What do you mean by your 'one with exposed pins' statement? Can you be a
little clearer? Are you stating that they are different products, that one has
been modified? How do you know this? Have you actually inspected one from QCP
and
one from UMC-J1772 to verify this?

Hi Lawrence,
I am happy to see you so enthusiast, but you realize that this is just a plug
converter, similar to when you travel to Europe and need a little plastic box
to plug in your flat blade US laptop or USB charger, and insert the converter’s
round pins into the EU outlet.
Same here – the 5 pin Tesla UMC charger is fully J1772 compliant with exception
of using a sleeker plug. You get the exact same result if you cut off the Tesla
plug from the UMC and attach a 80 Amp capable J1772 plug.
In fact, some people have done that to charge their EV with J1772 plug faster
with the UMC.
Not sure why this would be disruptive – it is not like it would allow a regular
EV charge at a Supercharger, that would be disruptive…
It is handy to be able to plug into the alternative of the ubiquitous J1772
chargers that can be used by all EVs, including Teslas, and allow the regular
EV to utilize the Tesla dedicated L2 chargers.

I had a talk with the inventor.  Turns out there is a clone that is not
urethane protected.  Also you have to read the directions.  You must plug into
certain Tesla devices and wait 30 seconds.  Not for use with superchargers.  I
