Ever seen one of these oddities around? They're the result of a weird,
short-lived Norwegian startup with ties to Lotus, Ford, and Tesla.

With the reveal of the electric Ford Mach E crossover on the horizon, it's a
good time to take a look back at one of the many strange chapters in the
history of electric Fords. One of them involved a transatlantic partnership
between Ford, a now-defunct Norwegian car manufacturer, and in which Lotus
and Tesla also played minor roles.

It all starts in the mid-1990s with a Norwegian startup by the name of
Pivco, which was working on a two-plus-two electric city car then called the
PIV4 with some help from Lotus. Though the PIV4 was production-ready by
1999, Pivco's finances were dire, and the company fell into the hands of
Ford after the Blue Oval picked up a majority stake in the company. Funding
secured, the PIV4—newly rebranded as the Ford Th!nk City—entered production
just in time for the 2000 North American International Auto Show in Detroit,
where Ford declared the car would headline a line of electric Th!nk vehicles
that also included golf carts and an early e-bike.

Production ended in 2002 with 1,005 cars built, and Ford sold its stake in
Th!nk in 2003, but the Norwegian company's rocky road didn't end there.
After a failed bid to enter the commercial vehicle market with electric
buses, Th!nk again ran out of cash in 2006, and was bought by a Norwegian
investment group, which hoped to restart production of the Th!nk City.
Initially, it inked a battery supply deal with an infant Tesla, but the deal
fell through and General Electric ended up financing the restart of Th!nk
City production.

These second-generation cars featured a small facelift and technical
updates, which included a 24-kWh battery, a 46-horsepower electric motor
that permitted a top speed of 68 mph, and a maximum range of 99 miles. These
were deemed adequate for the American market, and the Th!nk City returned to
the United States in November of 2010 with the launch of production in
Elkhart, Indiana. At the time, the Th!nk City was one of just a handful of
electric cars that you could legally drive on American highways, along with
the likes of the original Tesla Roadster, early Nissan Leaf, and Mitsubishi
I-Miev.

According to an archived Edmunds article, these cars cost an outrageous
$36,495 before tax incentives, so it'll come as no surprise to you that the
Th!nk City flopped internationally. Th!nk Global went bankrupt for the
fourth and final time in 2011, putting an end to European production, but
cars reportedly continued to be built in Indiana until August 2012. On rare
occasions, you can still run across a Th!nk City in American urban centers,
as we found out today when pictures of one were posted to a Chicago,
Illinois Facebook group.

As with those esoteric EVs mentioned earlier, the longer we get from their
initial production, the more obscure they'll get. However, it's interesting
to look back at the weird and wild history of EVs and their connection with
big-name automakers such as Ford. EV history is littered with such subjects
and greatly differs from the Tesla-led narrative pushed by its acolytes and
those who haven't researched any further.

Hydrogen has long been touted as the future for passenger cars. The hydrogen
fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), which simply runs on pressurised hydrogen
from a fuelling station, produces zero carbon emissions from its exhaust.

It [fcv] can be filled as quickly as a fossil-fuel equivalent and offers a
similar driving distance to petrol [ice]. It has some heavyweight backing,
with Toyota for instance launching the second-generation Mirai [

The Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association recently produced a report
extolling hydrogen vehicles. Among other points, it said that the carbon
footprint is an order of magnitude better than electric vehicles: 2.7g of
carbon dioxide per kilometre compared to 20.9g.

All the same, I think hydrogen fuel cells are a flawed concept. I do think
hydrogen will play a significant role in achieving net zero carbon emissions
by replacing natural gas [methane, CH4] in industrial and domestic heating.
But I struggle to see how hydrogen can compete with [battery] electric
vehicles, and this view has been reinforced by two recent pronouncements.

The bulk of the car, bus and light-truck market looks set to adopt
(battery electric technology), which are a cheaper solution than fuel cells.

technologies. “The conclusion is clear” said the company. “In the case of
the passenger car, everything speaks in favour of the battery and
practically nothing speaks in favour of hydrogen.”

Hydrogen’s efficiency problem
The reason why hydrogen is inefficient is because the energy must move from
wire to gas to wire in order to power a car. This is sometimes called the
energy vector transition.

Let’s take 100 watts of electricity produced by a renewable source such as a
wind turbine. To power an FCEV, that energy has to be converted into
hydrogen, possibly by passing it through water (the electrolysis [
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zpxn82p/revision/1
] process). This is around 75% energy-efficient, so around one-quarter of
the electricity is automatically lost.

The hydrogen produced has to be [cleaned/filtered,] compressed, chilled and
transported to the hydrogen station, a process that is around 90% efficient.
Once inside the vehicle, the hydrogen needs converted into electricity,
which is 60% efficient. Finally the electricity used in the motor to move
the vehicle is is around 95% efficient. Put together [

With electric vehicles, the energy runs on wires all the way from the source
to the car. The same 100 watts of power from the same turbine loses about 5%
of efficiency in this journey through the grid (in the case of hydrogen, I’m
assuming the conversion takes place onsite at the wind farm).

You lose a further 10% of energy from charging and discharging the
lithium-ion battery, plus another 5% from using the electricity to make the
vehicle move. So you are down to 80 watts – as shown in the figure opposite.

In other words, the hydrogen fuel cell requires double the amount of energy.

Finally a word on the claims on carbon emissions from that Canadian Hydrogen
and Fuel Cell Association report I mentioned earlier. I checked the source [

purely renwewable electricity with electric vehicles powered by electricity
from fossil fuels.

If both were charged using renewable electricity, the carbon footprint would

Beta might have been better from the start, but that didn’t keep it from
losing a videocassette recorder war versus VHS back in the 1980s.

Such was the case, it seems, in the battle between CHAdeMO and CCS as a
standard for electric-vehicle fast-charging in the 2010s.

Nissan has been the biggest longtime booster of CHAdeMO—the Beta of the
charging world—which originated in Japan and from the get-go was capable of
more than CCS is to this day, such as with bi-directional charging. But with
Nissan’s announced shift to CCS in the upcoming Ariya electric crossover for
the U.S. and Europe, CCS wins, heading into the 2020s, as the single
standard for EV fast charging outside of the Tesla ecosystem.

Some might say the writing has been on the wall ever since U.S. and German
automakers allied in the formation of CCS in 2011. But most will agree the
victory happened back in 2017, when Hyundai moved to standardize around the
CCS format with its current electric vehicles, and even Honda chose to
introduce its Clarity Electric with CCS.

That doesn’t spell the end for CHAdeMO. Just as Sony started to produce VHS
hardware in 1988 but didn’t quite abandon Beta, Nissan confirmed that there
will still be new Leafs with CHAdeMO as well as a decade of about 150,000
Leafs compatible with the standard in the U.S.

Simply put, many years from now, you shouldn't have a problem finding
charging stations capable of adding charge when you’re out on a weekend road
trip with a car like the Nissan Leaf Plus.

What it does signal is the likely end of the road for a decade-long
expansion of U.S. CHAdeMO DC fast-charging infrastructure that cost Nissan
tens of millions of dollars.

Nissan last year said that it has installed more than 2,000 DC fast-charging
connectors across the U.S. At that time it had spent more than $60 million
on charging installations in the U.S., much of that DC fast charging.

Last August, with EVgo, Nissan committed to 200 more 100-kw-capable
CHAdeMO-format fast chargers across the U.S. In a quick scan of EVgo,
PlugShare, and Chargeway apps, it appears that only a few of those are
online 11 months later. Nissan confirmed to Green Car Reports Thursday that
the project is still moving forward.

All this continued effort into multiple standards isn’t going to be seen as
value-added years from now.

And if you look at the numbers today, CCS is still not the dominant standard
by chargers or connectors.

According to the U.S. DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center, as of July 15,
2020, CHAdeMO still holds the lead by 179 stations—meaning you likely have
more locations to choose from along your route if you drive a Nissan Leaf
Plus than if you have a Chevrolet Bolt EV.

But in terms of connectors at those stations, CCS already has a strong
lead—with 5,150 total charging connectors, more than 1,000 ahead of CHAdeMO.

Reconfiguring the tally to include the U.S. and Canada together doesn’t
change things much. Then, CHAdeMO again has the lead in number of stations,
but CCS is within 135 stations of overtaking CHAdeMO. And between the U.S.
and Canada, CHAdeMo is still beating CCS by nearly 1,200 connectors.

Thanks to Electrify America and others, many of those connectors are 150 kw,
and some of them are 350 kw. On the other hand, most of the CHAdeMO
connectors are 50 kw, with some 24-kw chargers included in the totals.
Stations allowing 100-kw CHAdeMO charging—which the Leaf Plus can take
advantage of—are sparse and scattered, across the U.S., although
Petro-Canada has a cross-country network up north.

But don’t rush to call any vehicle that uses CCS the victor in this
standards war.

Tesla beats both of the standards in a tally of charging connectors. And
while its number of charging-station locations is far less than that of the
