Re: [Evolution] automatic s/Mime encryption

2021-10-07 Thread Glenn J. Schworak via evolution-list
I understand the "encrypt all" setting and the reason for it to throw
the error back. That much makes sense.
But couldn't it check well before sending? Or if I specifically say
"encrypt if possible" then I am specifically taking the stand that if I
can't encrypt to a person then I don't care and send it any way?
Personally, I almost never do group emails, but it would be nice to
email people that can receive encrypted email with encrypted email but
I am normally not concerned if I cannot encrypt and I don't want to
turn it on and off for every individual email.
Less secure, not really. Because if I had something sensitive that must
be encrypted, I could still use the options menu to force encryption on
and it would work just as it does now. But if it is in the "if
possible" mode it would try to encrypt and if it cannot then yes, it
would silently send unencrypted because I would do that anyway 99.9% of
the time.

[Evolution] automatic s/Mime encryption

2021-10-06 Thread Glenn J. Schworak via evolution-list
V3.36.5-0ubuntu1

I am seeing an option in the securty section of an email account that
says I can always encrypt messages from this account. That isn't all
that useful if not everyone I email can accept encrypted messages. Then
I have to remember who can and can't receive email or when I hit send,
the app barks at me and I have to un-select the encryption option.

I am wondering if I am missing something or if not could it be added
that the email is automatically encrypted if it knows that it can and
not if it knows that it can't?

I mean instead of having the checkbox to always encrypt, maybe make it
a dropdown that says NEVER, ALWAYS and WHEN POSSIBLE.

Just a thought to help make things easier.

Roger that. I've just got a pile of emails on one laptop in a different
account that I want to move to a different laptop, different user.
Thanks.

I'm using POP and set up Evolution to delete retrieved mails for each
account after one day.

Edit > Preferences > Double click an account > Receiving Options >
[x] Leave messages on server
Delete after 'x' days

For 'x' chose a time that fits to your needs.

This only fails for mails without a 'Date' header, but then you still
could save the mail as mbox to an USB stick and load it by the other
computer's MUA, assuming the mail without 'Date' header shouldn't be
spam.

Re: [Evolution] Evolution backups: is there a max size of the evolution-backup-20171231.tar.gz file

2018-01-01 Thread glenn
It is 3.20.5-4-4-x86_64. It is default w/openSuse 42.3 which is the
current release that I'm using.

I'd been anticipating a greater increase in size of the produced
backups than what I've been getting. Nothing seems missing or corrupted
in the backups that I've unpacked and checked. Thanks.

Backups are every 3 or 4 months to capture emails + attachments. So, I
gather that there are no file size or segmentation issues that would
limit the size of produced evolution-backup.tar.gz files? Thanks.

You don't say what version of Evolution you have. Please *always* state
this when asking questions (Help->About).

As has been discussed several times on the list, the Backup function is
really a misnomer. It's not intended for regular daily backups but for
capturing the state of your mail (and only your mail, not contacts,
tasks, address book etc.) when moving to a new system. You should use a
standard home directory backup strategy as well as (or instead of) this
function.

That said, the backup is just a big tar.gz file with the local state in
it. If your file won't grow beyond a certain size there might be a
limitation of some kind in your system, such as maximum file size or
disk quota.

[Evolution] Evolution backups: is there a max size of the evolution-backup-20171231.tar.gz file

2017-12-31 Thread glenn
Hi all-
My Evolution backup appear to be topping out at 7.7 gb in size. Is this
a maximum size for the produced evolution-backup-20171231.tar.gz file?

I've been using Evolution since the Ximian days: some of the items in
my backups stretch back to that era. Happy New Years. Glenn

[Evolution] Evolution and smtp port OTHER THAN 25

2009-09-13 Thread John Glenn
My ISP, 1and1.com uses an smtp (send) port OTHER THAN the Evolution Port
25.

I asked 1and1.com tech support for help and received the following URL

http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/confirm/evolution-list/b177d3c3e3496ba2eb1e1505932af450a4190bb0

Excellent resource for this problem.

The process

Determine what smtp port your ISP/mail provider uses (usually found on
the provider's site), then

1) Launch Evolution
2) Select Edit Preferences
3) Select account to modify and click on Edit; Account Editor appears
4) Select Sending Email tab
5) Under Server Configuration, the Server line should read normally
(e.g., smtp.domain)
APPEND A COLON (:) AND THE PROVIDER-REQUIRED PORT ID smtp.1and1.com:587o
the entry reads something like
smtp.domain.***:123
6) Try leaving the Security Use Security Connection as is *
7) Leave Authentication as it
8) Leave Izanami as is
9) Leave Remember password as is
10) Click the OK button
11) Test function by sending an email via the provider's service to
confirm it goes through.

* Step 6 - you _may_ need to try SSL or TLS encryption.

[Evolution] Forwarding from a MS Exchange server to pop server from within Evolution

2008-04-17 Thread Glenn Hollowell
I'm running Evolution 2.12 and accessing a MS Exchange server. When I'm
traveling I'd like to be able to access the mail that has been sent to
the MS Exchange server on my PDA without having to mess with Outlook Web
Access. Is there a way that I could have Evolution forward incoming mail
from the MS Exchange server automatically to a POP server that I can
download from using my PDA?

Thanks.
