RE: Your membership on exchange has been put on hold

2002-03-26 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

I've been getting them (several over the past week). I've also got a few
telling me my account has been restored to 'normal'.

I asked the same question on the swynk NT/2000 list - so far nobody else
has indicated they got them.

I've only got them from swynk. No other email related problems that I
can tell. I think their list server needs an enema.

Maybe they just don't like KS.

Title: Exchange 2000 System Attendant Incorrectly Sets Remote
 Registry Permissions
 Date: February 07, 2002
 Software: Exchange Server 2000
 Impact: Less Secure Default Settings
 Max Risk: Low
 Bulletin: MS02-003

Microsoft encourages customers to review the Security Bulletin at:
 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS02-003.asp.
 -
--

 Issue:
 ==
The Microsoft Exchange System Attendant is one of the core services in
Microsoft Exchange. It performs a variety of functions related to the
on-going maintenance of the Exchange system. To allow remote
administration
of an Exchange Server using the Exchange System Manager Microsoft
Management
Console (MMC) snap in, the System Attendant makes changes to the
permissions
on the Windows Registry to allow Exchange Administrators to remotely
update
configuration settings stored in the Registry.

There is a flaw in how the System Attendant makes these Registry
configuration changes. This flaw could allow an unprivileged user to
remotely access configuration information on the server. Specifically,
this
flaw inappropriately gives the Everyone group privileges to the
WinReg
key. This key controls the ability of users and groups to remotely
connect
to the Registry. By default, only Administrators are given the ability
to
remotely connect to the Registry, by granting permissions on this key.

The flaw does not grant any abilities beyond the ability to connect
remotely. However, an attacker's ability to make changes to the
Registry
once they have successfully connected would be dictated by the
permissions
on the specific keys within the Registry itself. Thus, while this
vulnerability does not itself give an attacker the ability to change
Registry settings, it could be used in conjunction with
inappropriately
permissive registry settings to gain access to, and make changes to a
 systems Registry.

 Mitigating Factors:

  - The vulnerability only grants the ability to connect to the
Registry remotely. It does not weaken any other permissions in
the Registry.

  - An attacker's ability to connect to the Registry remotely
requires the ability to send SMB traffic to and from the target
system. Firewalling best practices recommends closing the ports
that NetBIOS and Direct Host uses (tcp ports 139 and 445)

 Risk Rating:

  - Internet systems: Low
  - Intranet systems: Low
  - Client systems: None

 Patch Availability:
 ===
  - A patch is available to fix this vulnerability. Please read the
Security Bulletin at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms02-003.asp
for information on obtaining this patch.

RE: The day after superbowl

2002-02-04 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

A good friend of mine has been a volunteer with the Salt Lake City
olympic committee for years, and has been doing tons of work in
preparation.

Guess what he is assigned to do for the duration of the games...He gets
to keep an eye on radio and TV communications at the curling event,
which apparently is the longest event of the games (like 14 days or
something).

If for any reason there happens to be *ANY* TV or radio broadcast from
the curling site, don't be suprised to hear giggling in the background
from him as he watches grown men chase a big sinker down an ice runway
desperately sweeping stuff out from in front of it. The giggling will be
coming from a guy named Bob. If he isn't giggling, he'll be snoring.

which apparently is the longest event of the games (like 14 days or

How funny would it be if some fat dudes got all painted up like they
were going to a football game and were in the stands yelling, screaming,
and throwing beer at the guys that were doing the curling?

Or give the dudes hot cheerleaders. Either would be equally
entertaining and beneficial to the sport (if thats what it is).

The excessive sarcasm is what ruins this list.
This list contains far too many wannabee comedians and scornful nerds..

If you can't hack the sarcasm, you might consider a different list

Has anyone seen this? I have searched all over and don't know of it
is a
 virus or not.

If you need to adjust color balance of your image or make it sharper
you
will have to use some image editing software. In that case
FotoExplorer is
still a perfect tool that allows you to select the images you

want and drag them from your camera into the image editor.

\par It is not a tool to print fancy layouts, greeting cards,
calendars,
etc. If that is your goal use FotoExplorer in combination with some
 specialized printing software.

Along with this message it sent 2 attachments; FotoExplorer.exe and
 Search.gif.

I am using Antigen and removing all *.exe, but was curious if this is
a

RE: New Virus outbreak

2001-12-04 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

As far as I've seen on Antigen, it will.

Antigen filters based on the last extension (i.e. the rightmost 3 chars
after the last period) as far as I've seen, and in practice my and my
clients' Antigens pick off attachments with the double extensions w/no
problem when we simply filter for *.PIF, *.SCR, *.VB? etc.

I pretty much filter everything. One of the good aspects of Antigen for
Sybari is that I can quarantine certain items and approve delivery
later
if I choose. For example, I filter all *.exe files but some *.exe files
might serve a legitimate purpose (very rarely happens..but it does).
User
will notify me before or after the file is sent. If I deem the
executable
worthy then I simply forward it to the recipient using the Antigen
interface.

Even though I'm filtering just about every extension known to man I
still
have to watch out for these double extensions.(Example: *.txt.vbs,,
*.txt.exe,, *.txt.lnk). ETC.

The next version of Antigen will allow content filtering. This helps
but
can cause other problems so I will use it sparingly.

RE: I need recommendations for a good exchange virus scanner

2001-12-02 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

Absolutely. Download their 30day trial, and after you install it and
realize what a breeze it is to work with, and especially after it saves
your hide, buy it. It works. It's effective. It's easy on resources
(including the administrator resource).

RE: Quick question

2001-11-30 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

I haven't had a problem writing a VFP program that uses Outlook
automation to send emails to everyone in an address book even when the
!000 and other hoax prevention methods were used. If I can do it, I'm
sure a virus writer can do it.

Get the Outlook security update from MS - that will at least cause
Outlook to warn a user if Outlook is being used to programmatically send
mail. There are ways around that too, and I'm not sure if current virii
have circumvented it, but at least it is somewhat effective.

Stupid question of the day.
I have a user who has been given instructions to place a !000 address in
her
address book to stop all worm's from spreading in via her outlook
client.
Beyond the fact that I told her this was insane, and oh by the way we
have
not been infected by a worm virus since we got the I Love You (great
way
to get A/V funds), she now has her department convinced that this is the
way
to go and wants to have this put in all their address books. I know
that
this won't hurt anything, however now they want it added to the GAL and
I am
saying no, no, no! They want proof this won't work. I said prove
it
will work, they need more grease in their wheels, so now I am stuck
proving
it won't work. I can't find this on any of the web sites and am hoping
that
someone might know of a good link.
Thanks
Jeff

RE: ASCII messages

2001-08-16 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

Because there is something wrong with the setup of the internet.com
mailing list servers that they apparently have no intention of fixing.
It is a royal pain in the a$$. I have the same problem as you. I do not
have the problem on other mailing lists running the same list software.

Someone had me create a custom recipient with the list address and set
it's properties to plain text. That works - you just can't reply
directly to a message - you have to use the custom recip address.
