RE: Exchange 5.5 on vmware server

2002-10-28 Thread Davis,Scott
Cathy,
I have many time installed Exchange 5.5 on a VM. I have always used the
bridged network setting though.
This might be the issue you are having.

Yes, this is purely for testing. There are separate vmware machines to
handle the different functions, simulating the production machines. The
particular virtual machine I'm having problems with is only running W2K
as a member server.

Is this for a test bed. Most times I see VMare is for testing not
anything else. I have setup up Exchange 5.5 on Windows 2000 on a
separate server as part of a network that had a VMware server handling
all the DNS, DHCP and Domain controller functions. That worked fine.
Sounds like too many things running causing memory, ports, etc. running
for limited resources.

Subject: Exchange 5.5 on vmware server

 Hi Everyone

I'm trying to set up a test network using vmware on a Windows 2000
 server.
I've set up 2 domain controllers and several other servers, but
am having problems setting up Exchange 5.5 on a Windows 2000 virtual
machine (set up as a member server in the domain).

The error I'm getting is as follows:

While attending to stop the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant
 service,
the following error was encountered: the requested control is not
valid for this service. Microsoft Windows NT ID 0xc002041c

This occurs after the files are copied to the virtual server (ie I've
nearly got to the end of a normal install). After it's happened (I've
tried several times!), the Exchange services services are present but
 not
started (you can't start them manually). There's no entry in the
Control panel Add remove/software to enable easy removal to allow
 another
installation attempt, but I've tried manual removal of the
exchange registry entries without success. I've also tried on another
virtual machine with a clean W2K installation with the same results.
The machines have 256M memory, and we're using the host-only
 networking
configuaration. The Microsoft KB simply says they don't support this
and the vmware support KB doesn't appear to have anything relevant.

I seem to remember a couple of people on this list saying they used
vmware, so how did you do it?!

RE: IS 70GB and growing....

2002-10-02 Thread Davis,Scott

I'm assuming you are referring to the FC series and not the IP series.
As long as they will concatenate you the proper sized LUN's, and you get
the I/O requirements for your user load, you should be OK.
It's been my experience that with any LUN over 36GB, EMC gets very
nervous about.
I'm in the process right now of trying to get 4, 143.31GB storage group
volumes, 3, 33.6GB Transaction log volumes, and a Quorum volume
configured for a client..
I'll let you know how it turns out after I run JetStress against them.

Hello.

I have been told that Exchange 5.5 with IS bigger than 50G is VERY bad.
It means there is big chance the IS won't start after restart.

I am wondering if this is true, meaning, this is an undocument
limitation, and should I be afraid to have IS above 70G? The IS is on
EMC. The server is very very strong and acts very fast

SIS is maintained per database, not per server. So in moving users
between databases SIS is maintained on a per database basis. When, how

you
should opt for additional servers, databases or storage groups is not
a universal formula which can be applied unilaterally. Based on the

SMTP Queues

2002-06-05 Thread Davis,Scott

In Exchange 5.5, when a SMTP message bound for a remote host gets queued
because the remote host is temporally down, the message would sit in the
IMC outbound queue as a file on disk usually in the exchsrvr\imcdata\out
directory.
This does not seem to be the case for Exchange 2000. Does anyone know
where SMTP queued outbound messages stored?

RE: exchange 2000 server specific options

Take for example Joe Contractor.
Joe is contracted in your organization for 3 months. Joe needs a user
account to gain access to file shares in order to perform his tasks. Joe
have a mailbox at his consulting firm and he would like all
correspondence to be sent to it.
You can mail-enable Joe Contractor and use the SMTP address of his
choice. This way he can be included in the GAL.

convert the mail enabled user to mail box enabled user. Once you get
the mail box enabled user, then you will get deilivery options to set

Don't know...never tried it.
You can check the following that shows how to modify contacts:

You might have to use LDIFDE

Scott,

I was also looking for a way to massage distribution lists. Does this
work as well on Universal Distribution lists. Secondly then is it
possible to import back once changes are made? I have been using
usrtogrp utility from the E2K resource kit. But that is just for adding.

We are in the process of redesigning our network and may need to take
our Exchange 2000 server out of our domain. Since Exchange will out of
the AD domain, it will not be able to get any user info etc. Basically
how should I move an Exchange box out of domain to be a standalone email
server?

I think I may have to Exmerge to .pst and reload Exchange, then Exmerge
back.

RE: Exchange admin tools on XP Pro

David,
I have installed the ESM on XP. You must first install the Win2K

Once they are installed, you can then install ESM.

According to Q312139 titled You Cannot Install Exchange System Manager
on a Windows XP-Based Computer, MS tells you that you basically have to
run Exchange tools on a different machine if you have an XP workstation.
I was able to install the old 5.5 admin with no troubles but whenever I
try to install E2k admin tools (we only purchased the E2k upgrade if
that matters) I get the exact message mentioned in that article and it
won't let me. Also, according to Q284224 you will not see the
Exchange-related tasks in Active Directory Users Computers until you
install the ESM. Herein lies my problem. If you can't add the ESM to
an XP machine and you can't utilize Exchange tasks unless you install
the ESM, you basically cannot use an XP workstation to administer
Exchange? Lastly, I'm assuming that the Active Directory Connector MMC
also falls under this same thought process? Any input would be
appreciated.

Frazer,
The Performance Optimizer Settings are scattered all over the registry.
You can view them with regedit @
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeDS,ES,IMC,IS
Etc.\Parameters.
You can also run the Performance Optimizer in read-only mode to view the
current setting.
Drive:\exchsrvr\bin\perfwiz.exe -r
Hope this helps.

One of my colleagues recently reinstalled a 5.5 SP4 Exchange Server on

Physical Memory Utilization sits at around 99% (prior to the rebuild it

servers in the site which all sit at around 60% utilization. As it is a
24x7 service we offer on our server, down time is very limited. Is
there any way I can check the performance optimizer settings without
stopping the store? Or are there any other pointers that anyone can
think of I can check?

RE: Domain name change

2002-01-09 Thread Davis,Scott

You could do a directory export to capture all the current SMTP addressed.
Go to the Configuration container and select the properties for the Site Addressing.
Change the SMTP address to [EMAIL PROTECTED] This will start a process to
update all SMTP addresses to this new format.
You could then merge the old addresses in a csv file and append them to the new ones.

Hi,

I really looked in the archive to find this. My school just
decided to change it's name. At this time they want to make
two major changes:

 1. Change the email address from [EMAIL PROTECTED] to
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 2. Add an alias for everyone - [EMAIL PROTECTED]

We have about 1500 users so it'll be tough to do this
manually. I've added the new address to IMS routing and
that's working. What is the best way to accomplish both these tasks.

 Thanks for your help.

Sandhya

The one file I was referring to was the one file he was asking about.
Setting this up is not *as* painful under NT4 if your data center looks

Having the mib isn't enough. You also need the MIB.BIN file and the
PERFMIB.INI files as well. And they are matched - they all must come
from the same build.

Enabling SNMP reading of perfmon variables (at least under NT4/MSX5.5)
is an ugly and somewhat convoluted process. I once tried to build a
master set of files, but I gave up after finding that lots of perfmon
variables collided with existing MIB variable names. I tried to fix a
few by hand, but it just seemed like far too much work.

You only need one file. This one:

Good afternoon to you all:

I am in the process of building a MIB file for Exchange based on
the PerfMon MIB from Microsoft.

My question is this; do I need to customize the MIB file for the
individual configuration of the Exchange server (some have IMC's, others
don't, different drive configurations, etc). OR, can I use one generic
MIB file and trust that the SNMP service won't choke when I rebuild
MIB.BIN.

Missy,

I have just dumped several MB of info from my Mailbox Resource list by
deleting emails that had attachments. But a question that I must ask
is,
when does this disk space return back to our physical hard drive?

Have you looked in your Sent Items? Your calendar? Journal? Contacts?
They add up fairly quickly. And every attachment is an item.

I haven't a clue as to what's on your D: drive. Can you tell me?

Subject: Mailbox Resources Questions

How accurate is the Mailbox Resources list in the Private Information
Store when using Exchange Administrator? We have been having problems
with
our D: drive filling up and it is showing what I believe to be
inaccurate
information regarding some of the mailboxes. For example, it shows my
box
as being 107,223k with 12,907 items. In looking closely at my Outlook
program, there is no way that I have almost 13,000 items in my mail box.

What can I do to update this and what effects will it have on the actual
size of the D: drive in relation to drive space available? We
currently
have less that 200MB on a 4.3G drive.

Thanks,
John

RE: Offline Address Book Generation

2001-12-17 Thread Davis,Scott

Can you post the details of the eventID 5004?
It makes a difference as to the cause of the problem.
Also, what is the exact text of the popup error window when you try to manually
generate the offline address book?

Subject: Offline Address Book Generation

Greetings,
some time ago I posted this question but never got a
response. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas
in relation to this matter.
Thanks.

Hi,
we have an Exchange Server 5.5 SP3 environment
configured with Australia as a single site with a
server in each branch office as part of this site.
Recently we have been having offline address book
issues with laptop users, as they attempt to
synchronize their PC with one particular Exchange
Server's offline address book. They recieve the error
message an error occured while opening the microsoft
exchange offline address book files on the microsoft
exchange server.
When we attempt to regenerate an offline address book
on this server, the operation fails, and the event log
contains Event ID 5004.
None of the other exchange servers in the Australian
site are experiencing this issue.

We have already searched through the Microsoft
Knowledgebase looking for solutions but at this point
have been unable to find anything which resolves the
matter.

Has anyone had a similar experience and sucessfully
resolved the problem?
Regards,
