From the site :
The ultimate command-line mailer! Send and receive mail form the
command-line or execute from within virtually any program. Supports NNTP,
SMTP, ESMTP, MIME, BASE64 and UUENCODE for posting, and POP3, IMAP4, HTTP
protocols for receiving. Available for Windows and Unix. Can post HTML and
MHTML (embedded objects) messages.

I do believe there is a free exe for download. I have used this for a set
of large batch scripts that generate emails. Rock solid.

I agree. However, this person wanted to send e-mail from a batch file.
I interpret that to mean .BAT or .CMD files, for which BLAT is well
suited and ready to go.

We have a developer that is trying to find a way to send email via a
batch file. Does anyone know if this is possible and what the code is
that he should use? It will be sent to our SMTP server and then out
from there. We tried echoing a telnet session but we cannot figure out
how to do a return command. If you know of something different please
let me know. We are trying to stay away from buying anything third
party.

Use Postfix/ Spamassassin in this environment. Postfix MTA allows you to put
rules in to filter on expired addresses, known spam addresses, specfic
information in the header as well as attachments. Spamassassin spam
filtering itself is very good.

Hi all. We are receiving a lot of these bogus messages every day - bug
notice, failure message, report, error advice, bug
announcement, etc. Some of them have a fake Microsoft address in the
from line. They seem to be generated by a virus. Our antivirus programs
(SurfControl and NAVEX) catch and kill the virus, but the messages still
get through. They don't seem to have any consistent subject or From
address...

It seems that other organizations should be affected too, I am just
wondering how others are dealing with these messages.

Thanks!

RE: Spamassassin - Good?

2003-03-28 Thread King, John
I have been using spam assassin on a linux platform since February with much
success. It is easy to configure and works very well. I recently upgraded
to the newest version which adds functionality to preserve the original
message. This is a big plus when dealing with false positives. Some of the
features include white listing trusted mailers, vipul razor support, and
content rating. In my configuration it is filtering email site wide, with a
set threshold. Below is an example of a spam assassin report :

Content analysis details: (30.00 points, 5 required)
SUBJ_GUARANTEED(2.9 points) Subject GUARANTEED
BANG_GUARANTEE (0.5 points) BODY: Something is emphatically guaranteed
MARKETING_PARTNERS (2.1 points) BODY: Claims you registered with some kind
of partner
EXCUSE_14 (0.1 points) BODY: Tells you how to stop further spam
EXCUSE_15 (1.8 points) BODY: Claims to be legitimate email
EXCUSE_19 (0.9 points) BODY: Claims you opted-in or registered
OFFERS_ETC (0.6 points) BODY: Stop with the offers, coupons,
discounts etc!
FULL_REFUND(1.5 points) BODY: Offers a full refund
...

It has worked better than I could have every expected and for free. It is
nice to be able to provide new functionality even with a shrinking budget.

Good luck,
 John

RE: SPAM blockin software recommendations..... [bcc]

2003-03-24 Thread King, John
Not to be too redundant here, but I have been running Postfix on a Slackware
box as a corporate SMTP gateway. I would highly recommend Postfix for such
an application. The benefits of such a system are RBL checks on incoming
mail, low overhead, and with rrd one can produce pretty little graphs(to
show management). Recently Spam had become a major problem for us, as many
others I am sure. I decided to implement SpamAssasin with Postfix in
advanced filtering mode. There is plenty of documentation on different
filtering techniques with Postfix. Since 2/12/03 SpamAssassin has caught
10143 pieces of UCE with a very low false positive rate. The best part
about the system is it costs our company $0. Just some thoughts on non
commercial software.

I don't run Postfix myself so I can't really comment on the paper you refer
to.

Take a look at www.postfix.org too, I personally check several sources to
find out if a certain piece of information is true. Which does not mean I
don't trust Advosys but I'd rather check it all the same. They may have
forgotten some information you may need.

Really?? I don't see why it should..

If you like to do things the hard way (like /me) you should go for

I

RE: Very OT - txt handling

2002-12-11 Thread King, John
Umm yeah that would be cool, but if you have Visual Basic that maybe a good
route. It would be easy to parse the text file and then write it out to a
csv file. A csv file will open in Excel and look fine. Then compile exe
and schedule to run at any time. As a matter of fact you could probably do
it just the same with VBscrit if you don't have visual basic.

Good Luck,

Kim,

There are several things that might be of help.

A combination of Unix tools (ported to Win32 of course) grep wc (grep can
search for text/regular expression and wc can count lines, characters etc.
This will find out the stats you want; but won't automatically update the
files. You can create text files; but would need to import them. Search
google for the win32 ports of these utilites. I don't have an exact URL.

Perl is an excellent language for parsing text. You should be able to use
it to count up the statistics you are looking for, and then create/update a
document like it sounds like you want to do. http://www.activestate.com

Hi there,

I came across your address on the net, and I would like to ask you a
quick programming question. Could you point me out to a sort of code
that can count the number of characters and lines in a txt file and
transfer that to exell or access?

I have the following example (txt)

45 14:53:52 ENTRANCE ARTS (2) ACCESS GRANTED KIM SCHOTANUS (16788937)
46 15:14:52 EXIT ARTS GRANTED
47 16:00:48 ENTRANCE ARTS (2) ACCESS GRANTED PROCOPIO ALB (07723137)
48 16:52:24 EXIT ARTS (3) ACCESS GRANTED BECKERS PAUL (04906723)
...

In this example the first line is the line number, that is reset to 00
after 99, then there is the time, the action performed -ENTRANCE ARTS
(2) ACCESS GRANTED- and the name and permission code.
Line 46 is a special command, this is when someone overrides the system
(which happens quite often)

after each 20 lines there is a blank line and then a line with the date

The idea is to find/create a little code that pushes the data in this
txt file to exell on a daily basis.

Do you know of any code that could do this?

Having trouble getting POP3 access to work using Front-End server in a
DMZ.

Here's the environment:

PIX firewallDMZ that houses a Front-End Exchange SP3 serverPIX
FirewallLocal LAN with Back-End Exchange SP3 server.

Originally, POP3 was setup on the Back-End server and is presently
functioning perfectly. In order to secure the environment, we are
testing a
Front-End server to offload and secure that functionality.

When a POP3 account is inside the firewall or on the DMZ, there is no
problem with connectivity. Unfortunately, when it is on the Internet,
email times out with the following error:

The connection to the server has failed. Account ACCOUNT, Server:
SERVER, Protocol:SMTP, Port 25, Secure(SSL); NO, Socket Error: 10061,
error Number 0x800CCCoE

We have disabled Anonymous logon and are using Windows Authentication
for
POP3 clients on the Exchange server(s).

We cannot seem to find why it works from the inside and not from the
outside.

We've been using a number of different documents for reference,
including:

Q278339 - TCP/UDP Ports Used By Exchange 2000 Server
Q278339 - Exchange 2000 Windows 2000 Connectivity Through Firewalls
Exchange 2000 Deployment Guide (Chapter 6)

but cannot find a definitive answer.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot why POP3 is not working for the
machines on the Internet?

Thanks!

Large corp. Hourly - restricted overtime. No more than 1 hour per week
per employee (no joke). Salary, no comp time, no overtime.

However, if I am here til 2am, I don't actually get in trouble for
showing up at 10 the next day. But that's up to my boss. Weekends?
Sucks to be me.

Does anyone know if there is a standard policy out there for Comp Time?

I have been asked to find out what other companies do to compensate
their employees For working off hours(nights, weekends), beyond their
normal workweek.

Example: If I have to come in on a Saturday to install a new antivirus
package and it take 4 hours, do I get 4 hours off during the week or
what?

Thanks - Brian

RE: Instant Messaging with 5.5

2002-10-18 Thread King, John
Exchange IM, who needs any stinkin' Exchange IM. Use Jabber (jabber.org).
Open, Free, Function. Can't ask for much more. Clients are totally cross
platform. You can add transports on the server for AIM, Yahoo, MSN. Chat
with everyone on an open IM network. Jabber is all XML based. Pretty sweet
alternative.

OK. Make it so.
I have like 30 domains that we accept mail for. Please give some more
details on EXACTLY what you want to accomplish and we can try to help you
out. Otherwise we're guessing or making stuff up. Some people on this list
have very vivid imaginations and you wouldn't want that.

You don't need an SMTP connector for sending and receiving email.

This may sound odd but there is one golden question that will tell you
exactly if the candidate will fit the group or not: What are your three
favorite movies? If the person likes similar movies as the general team

I deal with (new and different) people daily who have worked with Exchange
for years but don't know their database from their check file. I wouldn't
let them within 20 feet of any Exchange server that I worked on but they are
the hired Exchange expert for their company. The fact is that people are
people, and certified people are not inherently better than experienced
people or vice versa. I think that the best bet is the person who realizes
that, regardless of how much he knows, he does not know everything and is
always willing and wanting to learn more than he currently knows.

You people talk like you can't have both. Sure there are some paper MCSEs
out there but there are also many MCSEs that have mucho experience. Most
hiring managers, all things being equal will look at experience first but...
then certs. Additionally while experience is the best there are people that
have worked in one environment for so long that they know NOTHING about any
other capabilities of the hardware/software. They are nearly as bad as the
paper MSCE because the scope of their knowledge is so very limited and
because of their experience think the only way to run a network is the way
they did it at their last job. At least the Paper boyz know they are
limited, are willing to learn, cost half as much and don't cause half the
drama the experience guy does. They piss me off so much more, that and
they usually have no idea as to WHY their last network was set up that way
but that it is just the best way. Experience is NOT always the best
qualifier either

If you are into Perl, I've got a script that I use to reboot
our MSX55 servers (monthly for mailbox servers, twice monthly
for IMS, weekly for OWA). It could undoubtedly be tweaked for
 what you want.

It shuts down the MSX services before the reboot (and
verifies that they do indeed stop). After the reboot is
complete, it verifies that any service running at the time of
reboot is running after the reboot.

RE: scheduling automatic rebooting of server

2002-04-24 Thread King, John

Actually you could patch a running Linux kernel, well kind of.. If you
follow the virtual Linux server stuff. It gets confusing, but you can run
many 'virtual' servers on top of a real server. Each virtual server, is
considered it's own node..
http://www.linuxvirtualserver.org/

Patching a Linux kernel and not rebooting, is like saying that you can apply
Win2k SP2 and not reboot.

Besides if he uses IPtables, TCPwrappers, PortSentry to block TCP/IP/UDP
ports that arn't being used, then how do you exploit kernel level security
holes..?

Seeing as its impossible to patch a running kernel without rebooting a Linux
box, not to mention that you're running Redhat 7.2, which hasn't been
available for 16 months, I'd like to know how you've not rebooted during
that time. Or are all those kernel holes still there.

Now - the exchange servers, which average a few thousand messages an hour,
moderate use, have been up 130 days since restarting, and that was the
result of system level updates.

IMS queue oddities

2002-04-16 Thread King, John

Hello all,

I have a question for the Exchange experts. MS Exchange 5.5 NT 4 SP 6a.. I
recently went live with a Postfix mail gateway. So now email comes in
through our firewall (PIX) and directly to the Postfix mail gateway.
Postfix determines what mail to relay to the internal MS Ex box. This works
great. Before going live with the Postfix mail gateway I would sometimes
see mail in the IMS (outbound) Queue on Exchange with an originator of
''.. The question is that now that there is a secure mail gateway in
place with relay restrictions, I still see these messages in the MS Ex IMS
outbound queue.

Could these messages leaving Ex be NDRs generated by Exchange..? It isn't
causing a problem, but still worries me that I don't know why they are
there.. Sorry if this is a stupid question...

Remote Site Question

2002-04-01 Thread King, John

Hello all,

I am stuck trying to figure out an email solution for a company that we
have acquired. I have until the end of today to do this..! This is a
temporary fix until the T1 at the new facility can be put in place. This is
the deal,

There will be 15 users that need to access email hosted on our Exchange 5.5
sp4 server. The new facility has NO internet connection. We have a RAS
server here with 2 lines. We cannot allow this facility to be connected to
RAS 24/7 as the lines are shared by multiple other users. The idea that I
have is this. I would like to bring an Exchange 5.5 sp4 server down there.
I will need this server to dial up the RAS connection to sync the email
accounts with our primary ExCh server during off hours. That shouldn't be
that hard, but I don't want all of the email accounts to sync. I just need
the 15 email accounts in question to sync. Is there a way to specify what
accounts to sync, or is it an all or nothing type of deal? I am sorry for
the lack of info, as this was tossed onto me this morning. I have never
setup Exchange IMS to connect via Dial up so I don't know too much about
this. Any help would be much appreciated..

   Thanks,
~John

RE: Remote Site Question

2002-04-01 Thread King, John

All that I know about the remote location is an address... I have been told
next to nothing and it is really pissing me off. How the hell am I supposed
to come up with a professional solution with out any bleapin' details. So I
don't know how many analog lines there will be. The new facility is a DOT
com that went bust, so I can assume that it must be wired well..

I have tossed around the idea of POP accounts, but it will tie up their
analog lines... I don't know if each station will have 2, 3, or just 1
analog line.. It is a solution though..

My fall back is just going down there with a win2k box that a RAS connection
setup to our RAS server and set it up with outlook web access.. That way
they can dial on demand, but only one user can check their mail at once..

How many analog lines do you have in the remote location?
A T1 takes about a month, so I wouldn't put to much into this.

How about a couple of Earthlink accounts to dial in and the users can POP or
IMAP their mail down?

RE: MSX5.5 hacked

2002-03-14 Thread King, John

nc.exe is really the win32 port of the infamous NetCat *nix program by
Hobbit. This program can be used to get a remote command prompt. Most
likely that is what cmd1.exe was used for. As for the third file, maybe an
ftp server binary..? Have you shut down the server..? Do you log TCP/IP
traffic..? If so then you could find out what is going on at the protocol
level. Too bad it isn't a *nix system or you could use TCT to do some post
mortem analysis..

  Good Luck,

there since Feb 24. Does anybody know what kind of hack is that and how to
get red of those whitout causing any post-hack attack.

443 for SSL connections only.. If you run IIS with Secure Sockets layer
then sure 443 and it will work fine, but otherwise use 80. SSL would be the
best though..

Hi All,

I need my memory refreshed as to which ports must be open on a firewall to
allow OWA use... just 443?

Thanks,

Exchange 5.5 admin troubles

2002-02-08 Thread King, John

Hello all,

Ok this problem is starting to really drive me nuts, so I figured I would
toss it to the list. This is the deal, the Exchange server I manage is 5.5
sp4 on winNT 4 sp6a. No trouble with the server.. I have recently migrated
to a new workstation. I have the Exchange 5.5 admin installed locally so I
don't have to walk into the server room to make changes, etc.. I had the
admin installed on my old workstation as well. Both workstation installs
are win2k sp2 and the admin was sp4. Now this is the trouble on the new
workstation when I open the admin and connect to server it works fine, but
when I goto the properties on a mailbox I see LESS tabs than the admin
version on my old workstation. In particular I need to see the permissions
tab, but it is missing. I checked my old workstation and the admin was
loading with NO command line switches... The installs seem to be the same,
what am I doing wrong..? Any ideas.. I hope that I am not being a doofus
and over looking something stupid, it is Friday though..

   Thanks,
   ~John

He can't uninstall the patch. He'd have to uninstall Office and reinstall
it.

There is a way to control how the security behaves, however. As another
poster offered the secrets to it are found here:

RE: Exchange 5.5 - Outlook 2000 attachment filtering is driving m e nu ts!

2002-02-05 Thread King, John

You must need the Outlook security update over-ride..! What you need to do
is download the admin pack for Exchange 5.5, set it up. After that it
creates an Outlook Security Settings public folder. Then you(if u r da
admin) will need to navigate to this folder and post using the default form.
There you can set over-ride setting on an individual user basis.. For more
info and all da grimmy details check this..

  Good luck

RE: Restricting use of MSN Messenger

2002-01-30 Thread King, John

Maybe you should just talk with him and save yourself some work. If he
shouldn't be using it, then let him know. If that doesn't work, then why
the hell is he still employed with you.. If you restrict access and he just
comes into work one day to find it won't work any more, then he will be
confused/upset. I think it would be better to just tell him how it is..!
Either way you really should have a firewall in place. Internet connections
and corporate LANs make for a bad mix sometimes. Do it with Linux or *BSD,
that way it is FREE and Secure.. hehe

   Good luck, just my thoughts

Good afternoon,

I am interested in determining the amount of space users are user per
mailbox. Does anyone know of any program that can extract this data
so I
can put it to a spreadsheet?

Thanks in advance for your help.

RE: detecting an Exchange server on the Network

2002-01-02 Thread King, John

Use tcpdump if u got a *nix box.. I am assuming windows only, so
there are some other options.. There is the tcpdump port for
windows, windump (requires a raw packet driver).. A must have dl it
@ http://netgroup-serv.polito.it/windump/install/default.htm ..
It might be difficult to find an exchanger server that way, needle /
haystack , especially if no one knows hostnames/ips.. GFI software
makes a network scanner that is pretty nifty, free (as in beer) dl @
http://www.gfi.com/languard/lanscan.htm .. You would need to know at
least a range of ips to scan. HTML reports and all that jazz..
Sounds like maybe good old social interaction might be the
appropriate path as opposed to all these digital (01101) behind the
backs...

  Just some thoughts..

Subject: detecting an Exchange server on the Network

Is there a way to find out if there is an exchange Server on a
network
without knowing its name or IP? I have someone who wants to see if a
user/admin at another location is setting up email without his
knowledge. I
was thinking maybe use RPC-ping, but having never used it, I'm not
sure if
that would work or not, since he doesn't know ip address or name.
Anyone have a good way? Network sniffer, scanning for SMTP traffic?
This
might work..but I think he wants to catch the server before it gets
to that
stage.
Thanks!

even
their web filter)?? I am currently using MAILsweeper for exchange

currently upgrading all of our systems. I have tried the Super scout
web

Any help much appreciated

Don,

I'm not too familiar with PIX but I know the problem with esmtp and
pix
,
but never heard of any with http.

Ronald,

The easiet way to make sure is not the pix, connect your laptop to
the

it
is
working, call Ci$co.

If your external address for your owa is tahoe.ss-pca.com/exchange
 then
you
have an authentication problem on your OWA server, nothing to do

I seems like u need to stop anonymous relay.! Do u route incoming
smtp mail..? If so impliment proper routing
restictions.. To check the anonymous realy, from an outside source
telnet to mailserver:23(better yet use ssh)
once connected try to send a mail message with a bogus mail from
source and if it lets u send then anonymous relay is enabled.
If anonymous relay is disabled it will display propmt like anonymous
relaying denied..

RFC821
then it must construct an undeliverable mail notification message
and
send it to the originator of the undeliverable mail (as indicated by
the
reverse-path).

This would seem to indicate relaying? However, I have my system

NOT relay. I've even tested (per the faq)? According to the

Outlook Security update over ride and Citrix terminal server

Hello,

I am new to this list so please bear with me. I have already
searched the archive and found nothing on this issue.. I have
deployed the Outlook security update to my users here. Sales runs a
custom app that uses MAPI functions, which needs special security
update over ride features set per users. I have done this and it
works fine. I downloaded the adminpack.exe setup the proper form,
set the client registry key and so on.. My local LAN users work
fine. I have a handful of sales users connecting through a WAN to a
Terminal Citrix server farm.. They need the same over ride access to
email a quote from the same app that is published and run from the
Citrix server. Outlook is installed and I have done the same
registry key modifications, but it will not work. The only
difference here is that the remote users are running this app through
terminal server.. I have not rebooted the server since adding the
registry values, I am under the impression that it is an on the fly
check performed when over ride access is needed..? Does anyone have
any ideas? Has this been done before.? I am sorry if this is an
already discussed issue.. Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Uh also it is Exchange 5.5 sp4.. Sorry if this comes through twice..

Ok here is the lowdown..

Windows 2k SP 1 Advanced Server with Terminal Services activated
  Citrix Metaframe 1.8 sp3
It is part of a Citrix server farm, but the only server with this
app published
Outlook 2k SR1+security update installed via add remove programs
with the command
  '*:\setup.exe Transforms=c:\temp\termsrvr.mst' where termservr.mst
came from ms office resource kit. Outlook works for all users. No
roaming profiles.. I checked permissions of the registry key
Security with the DWORD value 'CheckAdminSettings' set to 1, everyone
has read permissions. I am running out of ideas. It isn't a normal
situation, because remote users are client from Terminal server..
Please help..?

RE: Outlook Security update over ride and Citrix terminal server

2001-10-31 Thread King, John

NO. It is not just running Outlook, that works fine, for all
users... It is the sales app that is published for remote users.
This app users Outlook as a conduit to email quotes via the MAPI
engine. The way that this sales program accesses the Outlook MAPI
engine violates the default settings of the Outlook security update.
I have setup the over ride to 'automatically approve' direct MAPI
access, although I didn't want to:(.. This fixed the problem for our
LAN users running the client locally, but doing the same for the
terminal server users makes no difference. It doesn't even work when
running the sales app as administrator through terminal server..
This is beginning to bug the shit out of me..

Does it work if you logon as administrator to the TSE server and then
open
Outlook?

Ok here is the lowdown..

Windows 2k SP 1 Advanced Server with Terminal Services activated
  Citrix Metaframe 1.8 sp3
It is part of a Citrix server farm, but the only server with this
app published
Outlook 2k SR1+security update installed via add remove programs
with the command
  '*:\setup.exe Transforms=c:\temp\termsrvr.mst' where termservr.mst
came from ms office resource kit. Outlook works for all users. No
roaming profiles.. I checked permissions of the registry key
Security with the DWORD value 'CheckAdminSettings' set to 1, everyone
has read permissions. I am running out of ideas. It isn't a normal
situation, because remote users are client from Terminal server..
Please help..?

What version of Outlook, TSE and MetaFrame (SP level as well) are you
using?
Also, how did you Originally install Outlook? Do you use roaming
profiles?

   Thanks,
~John

Yup, you nailed it that time. I feel bad enough open up extra
settings, I don't know if I can deal with an unpatched install of
Outlook floating around. I have been burned by silly users too many
times.. I appreciate the help on this..

H. Just so I am clear.. The Security Update works as expected if
the
remote user accesses Outlook directly, but not if they attempt to
access it
via the sales app's conduit?
Of course, the easiest workaround may be to simply install Outlook
w/o the
security update on the TSE...
