The fix would be to clean up Contacts as any other folder. However, the
side effects are undesirable. I'm happy you think I'm funny but my
suggestion is serious.

Let me put it this way. If your users are going through all this trouble to
avoid having their mail cleaned up, then doesn't that perhaps suggest that
your policy is wrong-headed? Policies that cause users to behave
dysfunctionally just to get their jobs done don't make a whole lot of sense.

RE: OT-Outlook 11 in Exchange 2003 Beta 2 download

2003-02-20 Thread Robert Williams
This is from today's Wininfo Daily:
* MICROSOFT RELEASES OFFICE 2003 BETA 2 TO MSDN
Yesterday, Microsoft temporarily posted on the MSDN Subscriber Downloads
Web site several Microsoft Office 2003 (formerly code-named Office 11) Beta
2 downloads, including the suite's primary components--Microsoft Access,
Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word; OneNote 2003 (code-named Scribbler);
InfoPath 2003 (code-named XDocs); FrontPage 2003; Publisher 2003; and
SharePoint Portal Server 2003. However, the post appears to have been
premature: After making the products available for a few hours, Microsoft
pulled the downloads, stating that the company wasn't yet ready to release
Office 2003 Beta 2. One problem is that Office 2003 beta testers hadn't yet
received the Office 2003 Beta 2 code, which Microsoft finalized more than a
week ago.

We want to make sure we have all the materials ready, so that people have
the best experience with the beta, a Microsoft spokesperson said. The
company will widely distribute Office 2003 Beta 2 and will eventually
provide the product through a public preview program. As first reported in
WinInfo Daily UPDATE, Microsoft will market Office 2003 products as part of
its so-called iWave campaign, which targets information workers.

I'll provide an extensive review of Office 2003 Beta 2 in the coming weeks,
but a cursory look at all the currently available beta 2 applications
reveals that they've matured since the beta 1 release. Microsoft has
dramatically improved toolbar icons and overall fit-and-finish, giving each
of the products a more polished look. New Permissions functionality ties
Office documents and email to Microsoft Windows Rights Management (Windows
RM) system, letting document makers determine how recipients can use their
creations. For example, you can send a protected email that recipients can't
forward, copy to the clipboard, or print. Outlook includes new
spam-filtering functionality, although it appears to have no effect on IMAP
or Web-based email accounts, which is unfortunate. And OneNote is now stable
enough to use regularly, so I'll start giving it a workout during the
regular note-taking sessions that dominate much of my time. If you have
questions about Office 2003, please fire away.

I just downloaded Exchange 2003 Beta 2 and was interested in checking out
Outlook 11 first. I read on slipstick that it is part of the download.  I am
unable to find it. Does anyone know if Outlook 11 Beta 1 is in the Exchange
download? Do I have fully install Exchange 2003?

Thanks for the help.

If the policy is as you stated: no email past a certain date or find
another job

Then just report the offenders to Human Resources so that they can get
started.

Which was Ed's suggestion... It sounds like management has already issued a
directive, and simply need to be notified that there are offenders which
need either Warnings or Enforcement.

Well like most Firewalls they lock everything and you have to punch holes in
it. Relaying should be allowed to those that successfully Authenticate.
Check your setting for same.

If your running Exchange 2000 and I assuming this, you need the
Firewall Software/Hardware to allow ESMTP protocol traffic for
 Messaging to flow.

Can anyone tell me what to do here?
I just installed a Symantec Velociraptor firewall.

Here is the message my firewall is showing, (I removed the original
email addresses to protect the innocent)

smtpd Warning: Sender [EMAIL PROTECTED] SIZE=2844 from
[207.114.164.37] tried to send to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]
  NOTIFY=FAILURE,DELAY ORCPT=rfc822;[EMAIL PROTECTED]' - 550
5.7.1 Bad recipient format -- possible relay attempt

In my smpt protocol settings on the firewall I have the following
choices: of which only ESMTP is checked:

Enable ESMTP - Provides access to the Extended Simple Mail Transfer
Protocol. ESMTP is enabled by default. When it is enabled, the
other service extensions on this tab can be enabled.

Enable AUTH (Authentication) - Allows client to send user name and
 password
to authenticate with the server. Authentication is enabled by
  default.

Note: SEF/SEVPN does not support authentication mechanisms that
result in the connection being encrypted.

Enable ATRN (Authenticated turn) - Allows an on-demand mail relay
from the server to the client by turning the existing connection
around. ATRN is disabled by default.

Enable ETRN (Extended turn- Allows the client to access mail. In
  this
 case,
the server is requested to initiate a separate connection to the
  client
 for
the purpose of mail relay from server to the client. ETRN is
  disabled by default.

Enable EXPN (Expansion) - Allows for the expansion of mailing lists.
  EXPN
 is
  disabled by default.

Caution: Enabling this option exposes information about your
internal network to untrusted sites and is therefore not
  recommended.

Enable VRFY (Verify) - Allows verification of mail addresses. VRFY
  is disabled by default.

Caution: Enabling this option exposes information about your
internal network to untrusted sites and is therefore not
  recommended.

Should I have any other of these options checked to allow these
  emails to pass thru?

Well like most Firewalls they lock everything and you have to punch
 holes
in
it. Relaying should be allowed to those that successfully
Authenticate. Check your setting for same.

If your running Exchange 2000 and I assuming this, you need the
Firewall Software/Hardware to allow ESMTP protocol traffic for

I have a question about relay traffic

2002-10-09 Thread Robert Williams

One of my users said that they can't receive any mail from a client.
I asked the client to send me the error message. It came from
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
And said the following:

553 [EMAIL PROTECTED]... unauthorized relay traffic prohibited 554
[EMAIL PROTECTED]... Service unavailable

If I have turned of my open relay on my exchange server why is this
happening? Or is it a problem with UUNET or the client?

Maybe my eyesight is going bad, but it looks like your client is trying to
use a UUNET SMTP server to send email and UUNET does not want them to do use
this particular server or your client has been using this UUNET server to
spam people and they have blocked him/her.

I cannot imagine what this has to do with your Exchange server since it does
not look like it is even getting that far.

One of my users said that they can't receive any mail from a client. I

Stupid newbie question-what is EHLO?

The EHLO verb and SMTP extensions - http://cr.yp.to/smtp/ehlo.html

EHLO is just like HELO except that the server's response text provides
computer-readable information about the server's abilities.

Here is what happens if the server accepts EHLO (required code 250). On the
first response line, the text begins with the server's name. On each
response line past the first, the text is an extension, followed optionally
by a space and an argument, followed optionally by a space and another
argument, etc.

The extension is a nonempty string of letters, digits, and hyphens. Each
argument is a nonempty string of graphical ASCII characters.

It means that your firewall is blocking Extended SMTP (ESMTP) commands.
That's not necessarily bad, but in reality its not necessary to block it.

I'm guessing you have a Cisco PIX firewall? If so, you want to disable the
Mailguard feature, which will fix that. I believe the command is no fixup

eManager on a gateway server is definitely the way to go, it would only cost
you a 2000 server license and an acceptable PC (processor memory etc). I
have mine running on a dual Pentium 200 with 512MB, leftover server.

The product works well and is relatively customizable, it catches 80-85% of
valid Spam, .1% valid emails out of 1500-2000 emails a day incoming (.1%
example whoever would of thought that Suma Cum Laude was not Spam? :oP). I
second the PITA on not being able to change default rules and also the bug
that erased custom rules during an autoupdate (They fixed that one).

I give it 8 out of 10 against similar programs under $2000.

I ran into that same problem - kind of defeats the purpose of the filter
when the subject contains the offensive language. So we switched to the
MAPI version. This has problems of it's own - it is not possible to
configure this product to scan incoming mail only. Users attempt to save
contact or calandar items (which shouldn't be scanned) with a banned word
and they disappear.

A better solution (if you have the budget) is to scan on the gateway
instead.

What version are you using? ESE/API or MAPI/AVAPI?.

I am demoing the ESE/API version and the SPAM that is blocked actually
appears in the users mailboxes in preview mode and then when you click to
open the message, you see the standard message The email was blocked
according to rules. and I only have the Administrator being notified,
not the sender or recipient, so I would think the recipient would not see
any notification.

RE: Spam Filter Suggestions

2002-05-09 Thread Robert Williams

I just purchased the Scanmail Emanager piece and so far it is working with
just the updated default rules and it seems to be catching a lot of spam.
Although I need to make some of my own rules to up the anti... So far I like
it

By the way, I am running it in AVAPI mode which the eManager piece runs
better because I can forward the caught spam to a mailbox

wanted to know if there are other products we should look at.

ESE is latest and greatest.
There have been reports that AVAPI can get overloaded like MAPI, but I have
not heard of one real life experience.

Need advice about an exchange HD setup

2002-04-25 Thread Robert Williams

I am moving my 5.5 server to a new box soon.
It is a Dell 2550 with 1.2 gigs ram and 5 18gig 10k SCSI drives with 128Meg

I am planning to use the first 2 drives mirrored for the OS and the other 3
for a raid 5 stripe for exchange
If this is or is not a good setup, then any advice would be appreciated.

Me... I'd add a 4th HD to the raid 5 for Online Spare.

there's also a bit in the FAQ about optimum HD config for exch55. I think it
mentions a mirrored pair also just for the log's.

RE: Open relay question

2002-03-04 Thread Robert Williams

I am testing this with IMAP on my own account and it still does not work
What is the setting on IMS for authentication? I chose that from routing
restrictions..
On my OL2002 I check the outgoing server requires authentication under
more settings
Did I miss something?

The list is going to tell you VPN or OWA, but that is not always an option.
I personally use IMAP and authenticated SMTP to allow this over the internet
for my travelling trainers and sales people. Works really well. Upside is
that the mail stays on the server and can be accessed through OWA, Exchange
or their IMAP client. They check the check box in OE that says you must
authenticate to send mail and voila! No more open relay and all your people
are happy.

Create a custom recipient representing his home account. Allow auto-forward

This is not recommended, by the way: the potential for mail loops is large.
Better would be to give him external access to his mailbox.

So what part of Daniel's suggestion did you not understand? The Custom
Recipient is set up with an external e-mail address - his home e-mail
address. You can then select that CR as the alternate recipient under
delivery options and it will work once you uncheck Do not allow autoreplies
to the Internet on your IMS. You asked for the easiest way - that is what
was presented. However, as Daniel also said, the potential for mail loops
increases greatly. If you choose to do this, don't come crying back to us
if your server crashes from a loop. Management's job is to give you orders.
Your job is to reply back why some of the orders don't make sense. If you
do a good enough job, you will make them understand that it doesn't make
sense. Make sure that legal has some input on this as well.

Create a custom recipient representing his home account. Allow auto-forward
under the IMC.

Are you backing up your server? Those logs are what is being written. If
you are backing up the server, and have the log files removed, you won't see
quite so many -there is an option to flush committed logs when backing up.

Sounds to me like he needs to run to the disaster recovery white paper. And
read it.. Before that happens he needs to step away from the server.

Those are not log files like what your server did. They are transaction
logs. As in a copy of every message that has come in and out of your server,
that in the case of a Priv loss can be re applied to a backup to make your
Priv current.

Go, read, NOW! Then you can ask more questions.

You may want to run an online backup, and delete them like that. Or, you
could stop the IS, and that will commit the log files as well. Are you
running out of space? Is that why you need to delete them?

RE: I need help with edb*.log files

2001-11-12 Thread Robert Williams
for this is that the checkpoint may be in the Edb.log file.
When
the Edb.log file is full, it is renamed Edb0009d.log, and a new Edb.log
file
is created, which will itself eventually be renamed Edb0009e.log, and so
on.

5. You can safely remove all numbered logs below the checkpoint, but not the
checkpoint log itself. In this example, you can remove Edb0009c.log,
Edb0009b.log, and so on, but not Edb0009d.log. If you do not intend to
remove
all logs older than the checkpoint, it is best to remove them in
chronological order, starting with the oldest.

Remember to move, not delete, the log files.

You do not have to stop the database service to remove log files older than
the
checkpoint.

If you must restore a backup, you must also restore all log files created
since
the last backup. If there is a gap in the sequence of logs, you cannot roll
forward past the gap.
