RE: Patch 2657.74 Exchange 5.5 Information Store
We had a semi-lengthy discussion with PSS regarding the reliability of this fix. They told us that, given its availability, they would have known of any problems with it by now, for whatever that's worth. We applied it to a lab server with no problems and then started easing it into production. Our most populous server running the fix thus far has 1500 mailboxes. No adverse effects...yet. The Mailbox Manager began using the Last Modified Date with SP4. You can add this field to your Outlook view to check it, or you can view the properties of the message. We had a problem recently where the log files grew rapidly but we did not notice any proportional store file growth. The problem was not the amount of data/messages a user was transferring, but the number of transactions a user was generating. She had sent out a mass email with an RR attached, and in the process of deleting all the RRs, generated enough transactions to fill up the log drive. To isolate the user, we went to Properties of the Private Information Store, Logons tab, added Total Ops to the view, and sorted by Total Ops. The offending user immediately jumped out at us. You'll need to check this while the log files are being generated at a higher-than-normal rate. (These instructions are for 5.5. I'm sure there is a 2000 equiv.) To fix the problem, we had her set up a .pst and ran a rule to move the RRs to the .pst. This didn't seem to generate as many transactions. If the growth also involves the store, turn up logging on the IMC (SMTP connections and possibly Message Archival) and Private Store (Transport Send/Rcv, I believe, but you may need to try other counters, too), then check the Event log and IMC Archive directory. You should be able to get a good idea of who is sending the most messages. RE: Changing domain membership on Exchange server
We recently moved 40 Win2k/Exchange 5.5 member servers from an NT4 domain to AD and suffered zero adverse effects. I'll assume your Exchange server is a member server. (If your Exchange server is a DC, sheez, I'll have to defer. It would involve a lot more than a domain change, and I don't think it would be pretty.) If your Exchange services are already running under an AD account (via trust), then it should just be a matter of changing the domain membership of the mail server(s) and rebooting. If your Exchange services are running under an NT4 domain account, it is still just a matter of changing the domain membership and rebooting, but you will eventually need change the Exchange service account to an AD account before the NT4 domain is collapsed. (See link for changing service account. I assume you know the potential hazards of changing this account.) It should not matter if you move the Exchange server(s) to the AD before or after Exchange is running under the new service account, but I would only make one change at a time (domain membership or service account). In either case, make sure the service account is a member of the local admin group on the Exchange server once the domain move is complete, before the Exchange services are started. Believe it or not, on some servers, we were able to start all Exchange services without the service account being in the local admin group. We didn't catch the problem until the backups failed. Also, ensure that your Exchange server(s) DNS settings/entries are correct once the move is complete, especially if you have multiple Exchange servers. You could also migrate the service account and Exchange server to the AD using an AD migration tool of some 3P vendor. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;266041 Russ -Original Message- From: Davinder Gupta [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 25, 2003 5:59 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Changing domain membership on Exchange server Shortly, we will be eliminating an NT 4 domain and I was wondering if we disjoin an existing mail server from NT4 domain and join it to Active Directory, will it have any adverse impact on us? RE: Finding full mailboxes.
Meant to add, save the window contents to a file after sorting, and there's your report. Somewhat of a manual process, and not fancy, but doesn't cost anything and requires no additional software. Pull the file into Excel or Access for more sort options. Maybe not as automated of a process as you are looking for, but again, cheap. -Original Message- From: Russ Payne [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, August 06, 2003 10:43 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Finding full mailboxes. I have several 5.5 servers that have this problem, too, primarily when the client is Outlook XP (same workstations did not have an access problem under Outlook 2000).
