FW: disaster debriefing
Why in the world would you do a directory restore? Michael Semiglia -Original Message- From: Yanek Korff [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, November 29, 2001 2:16 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: disaster debriefing Ok, so we had a disaster the other day. Co-Worker of mine ran eseutil against the private IS to free up some disk space. We were at about 95% capacity on the drive, and it would creep up to about 98% before the nightly incrementals, which brought it back down. Now, I'm not positive what command he ran, but apparently it cleared about 3.5 gigs out of the IS. Right before eseutil exited, however, it apparently hung waiting for a command prompt. I'm a little fuzzy as to what happened after this. I think he tried to reboot, and then the IS didn't come up -- he got some errors, looked them up in the KB to very little avail. So when I got in at 9 the next morning, mail was down. He was still there. We managed to put humpty dumpty back together again restoring from the full backup we made right before starting this procedure. It took several attempts - he had tried restoring from backup before but hadn't had any success. I think the procedure we followed was this: Shut down all exchange services Start System Attendant directory service Restore DS Stop System Attendant directory service Restart System Attendant Restore IS Any other combination of services running/not running didn't work out. We're using Veritas Backup Exec BTW. Well everything's back to the way it was before we started this whole mess. I know I've seen discussions about eseutil on this list before, but I wanted to revisit this and get some concrete information. What did we do wrong? What's the right way to use eseutil to gain disk space? I'd appreciate any non-flaming advice, pointers, docs, etc. I find the archives non-intuitive -- or maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? Can't seem to find a good place to type in a search phrase eseutil and have it return relevant data (I'm here: http://www.swynk.com) -Yanek. _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED] _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Consultants are also hired as someone to blame if whatever they are attempting to do does not work. If you are a CIO, it is tough to blame someone in your own company if there is a snafu. You can go ahead and rip your employee a new one or fire them, but in the boardroom, you will still look bad since you are ultimately responsible for them. Online IS maintenance window.
I am a little confused by the online IS maintenance window. I set the schedule to end at 7 AM and the log states that the maintenance was interrupted at 7:59:23 AM and will pick up later. Now I am positive I have it set for 7AM. Looking at Q244524 there is this line in it : By default, the online defragmentation process runs for a minimum of fifteen minutes and it only runs for up to one hour after the information store maintenance scheduled window time. You can change these times by editing the registry. This would seem to indicate that if the last block filled in is 6 AM when the pointer is over it, the maintenance will actually end at 7:59 and would also explain the event log entry. Any thoughts? Outlook ANR issue
I already posted this to the Outlook news groups, but got no bites. Was hoping someone here might have an idea. I am having a problem w/ the ANR for Outlook. I used to have a custom recipient to Notes for an email address called v1234. The CR was v1234@NotesDomain. That all worked pretty good. However since we are going from Notes to E2K (Yea!), we decided to delete the Notes CR and notes mailfile and create an xchg mailbox. That also works fairly well. If one uses the address book to find v1234, the mail get sent there w/o any problems. However, if I and some random sampling of users type in v1234 in the to: field, the email will attempt to send itself off to the old custom recipient. I get a NDR saying the name is not recognized. I also get the same sort of indication on the message tracking feature of exchange. My guess is that it has to be a cached address entry. How do I clean that out. I really don't like having to tell people constantly what the problem is. It seems that this is a bug and not a feature. Any opinions? Restore of directory.
Hi all, Exchange 5.5 on NT 4. Veritas Backup Exec and TSM/ADSM backup solution. We had some issues recently where we had a corrupted directory on a server and I had a brain cramp in implementing the restore. Looking back, it was definitely an oversight on my part, however even after the 20/20 hindsight, I see no easy way around the problem. We were doing service pack updates on all of our servers from NT SP4 to NT SP6a and then from Exchange SP2 to SP4. Prior to packing the servers I had an online and offline back available. This was server number 18 out of 19. Work had been commencing over a 3 month period and all our servers are on Compaq proliants with the same h/w and s/w configuration. Installed both NT SP6a and Exchange SP4 on this particular server with no unusual entries in the event logs. However on the next backup of the directory using backup exec, started getting the following -1018 errors: Event Type: Error Event Source: ESE97 Event Category: Database Page Cache Event ID: 118 Date: 8/12/2001 Time: 11:50:27 AM User: N/A Computer: CAEEXP01 Description: MSExchangeDS (471) Direct read found corrupted page (25075) with error -1018. Please restore the databases from a previous backup. The indication in technet was that there is a hardware issue. At that point, using perfopt, moved the directory around to different physical/logical hard drives. Also ran the eseutil with the verify switch. Moving the directory around still caused the above error and the eseutil program returned no errors. At this point I tried using the TSM/ADSM backup solution that we were rolling out and this caused the same -1018 error. This pretty much told me that there was no issue with the backup solution and sort of exonerated the h/w. At this point I decided to do a restore of the directory from the last good backup I had, which was the night prior to the service pack work. I placed the tape in and kicked of the restore. Now for all of you reading along, this is where you go You can't do that. The braincramp is that the server is at NT SP6a and Exchange SP4 now and the backup set is at NT SP4 and Exchange SP2. The disaster recovery whitepaper specifically states that the service pack levels need to be the same as the backed up copy. I also realized that after I kicked of the restore. The restore finished successfully and all I need to do was start the directory. At this point, I said just let me see what happens. I had an online and offline backup of the corrupted directory and could return to the point I was prior to doing the restore. After starting the directory it started replaying log files and the came up with the following error: Event Type: Error Event Source: ESE97 Event Category: Logging/Recovery Event ID: 134 Date: 8/25/2001 Time: 2:22:18 PM User: N/A Computer: CAEEXP01 Description: (501) The database s:\exchsrvr\DSADATA\dir.edb created at 10/22/1997 20:51:54 was not recovered. After that, I got a bunch of table rebuilds indicating that something was aware that the restored directory was NT SP4 and the OS was now NT SP6a. After that everything came up smoothly. No errors anywhere in sight. I then performed a backup and it worked w/o and errors on both backup exec and the TSM/ADSM backups. I really don't understand the above error. Anybody have any insights on that one? I guess my question is, is the directory all right or should I run as fast as I can to the server an turned it off before it poisons my entire organization. FW: Restore of directory.
I guess I forgot to mention that I looked at that. I got misled because the error states that the signature may get altered through an offline defrag. I didn't do anything like that. However, the database was probably given a different signature due to the service pack upgrades. That still leaves open the question that the service pack level was different than the restored file service pack level. This is in contradiction to what the exchange disaster recovery whitepaper states. FW: 535 errors in security log
We did a little more t/s last night. Had a user who left their NT w/s locked for a week while out of town on a conference. During that week we think the password expired. No stuck keyboard of process or any kind of coding running. The user does NOT have an exchange mailbox. We have two email systems here, Notes being the other. However, he did have Outlook installed. We automatically build an outlook profile for users based on the NT login ID which matches the mailbox alias. While we were getting the errors, I was unable to check the outlook profile properties. The panel just kept hanging. We then set the password in the account domain to never expire. The 535 errors immediately went away. At that point I was able to get into the outlook profile properties and view all the configuration setups. The conclusion thus far is that Outlook was trying to match up the alias to the address box and kept failing because of the expired password and the fact that there is no mailbox for that user. Did not realize that even though Outlook is not running, it still has a portion of itself that is actively talking to the exchange servers. I am not sure if this falls under the category of bug or feature. No, he does NOT have an exchange mailbox. He has Outlook installed with the profile being built using his NT LAN ID which normally is the Exchange mailbox alias for the end users here. However, since he does not have an exchange mailbox, he cannot open Outlook. He just gets the generic error, Unable to open you folders. Also, the NT ID was not locked, the w/s was locked and the password had expired. As far as the last statement, we do have rightfax and winfax in use here. Maybe on of those apps was trying to use the mapi profile on the w/s. Think I need to do a network trace and see exactly what is being sent over the wire. He just doesn't use it? I'd say that the problems occured because the NT ID was locked, and some other process was trying to access the mailbox, and because the ID was locked, that interfered. As far as I know, when Outlook is shut down, it's shut down, and not attempting to talk to the Exchange server in any way. Chinese proverb -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Semiglia, Michael Sent: Friday, August 24, 2001 6:28 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: FW: 535 errors in security log We did a little more t/s last night. Their process may be trying to login with wrong credentials.
