SMTPEventSink Adding a Disclaimer to outgoing emails
Hello, I am trying to add a disclaimer to all outgoing SMTP mail from my exchange server. I have followed Q articles 317327 and 288756. However, when I go to register the sink on the interface as described in 317327 I get an error. The smtpreg.vbs comes back with Active X object can't be created. I have tried this several times, rebuilt the dll in VB several times but still no luck. Any ideas? Any help would be much appreciated. Nope, I am using Trend's Interscan Message Security Suite(Viruswall), it has a module which can achieve the same result. See my disclaimer below. The SMTP service needs to be restarted. Does it work? Yes, to the extent that the code is developed. E-mail disclaimer
We are a multinational company with head office in New Jersey . We are debating over enforcing the use of E-mail disclaimer (e.g.: The information contained in this e-mail and any attachments is provided in confidence. It is intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom it is addressed and others explicitly authorized to receive it. If you are not that ..) . The question is, how necessary it is for legal aspects ? Can a company be hold accountable for an e-mail without this disclaimer ? Lots of you have this disclaimer in your e-mails too , have you been given any justification on why do you have to use it ? Please reply , I'll really appreciate it . Their pretty stupid in my opinion. Cause you have to read them and go all the way to the bottom of the message to see the disclaimer. How would we add a disclaimer to our internal messages being sent inside the Company? We basically want to add to every message a statement saying that email is property of the Company and any violation or misuse of the Company's email system will result in flogging and being sent to their room without the use of the facilities for 24 hours! No, but seriously, can this be done just with the Exchange program? Or do we have to use a third-party software to be able to do this internally. RE: Disclaimer
Do you remind people each and every day that it is a violation of company policy to use corporate office supplies for personal use? I serious doubt that you do. So why would you remind them every stinking time that they send an eMail of your corporate policy on eMail use? Post the policy where you post all your other corporate policies (Web page, employee handbook, etc) and have them acknowledge that they received a copy. Just like for every other policy in the company. Why is it the senior management across this country (nay, across the world) feels that they have to remind eMail users on a daily basis about corporate policy? They don't prefix every telephone call with a recording reminding them of the appropriate use of the phone? The next time a manager comes to you [1] asking for internal disclaimers, ask them if they are also implementing the phone recording message? It might just make them realize how silly their request is. [1] you being the entire Exchange List not just Mr. Edwards [2] [2] Oh, the technical answer is you have to use third party software. -Original Message- From: Dale Edwards [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, October 24, 2001 8:02 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Disclaimer Okay. RE: Disclaimer
You forgot your rant tag; or more appropriately, the newer but less-supported peeve. Bad form, old boy. The answer to the rhetorical question is that it's easier to ask a techie to implement a technological solution, than it is to ask your managers to, well, manage. Techies love solving problems (real or perceived, true business need or no), and most middle managers despise or are miserable failures at managing. -Original Message- From: Doug Hampshire [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Posted At: Wednesday, October 24, 2001 10:10 AM Posted To: MSExchange Mailing List Conversation: Disclaimer Subject: RE: Disclaimer Do you remind people each and every day that it is a violation of company policy to use corporate office supplies for personal use? RE: Disclaimer
I seriously doubt that we DO have to remind ALL our Users everyday and with every email that the may be violating the email policy of the company. However, there are SOME people that actually do need to be reminded every day and with EVERY email they send that they may be in violation of the email policy of the company. Otherwise, I would not have asked the question. Just because you post a message on a piece of paper and in a book, which 3/4 of the employees probably never have read, page-to-page, or post a message on some lame bulletin stuck up in the kitchen, doesn't mean the policy will be enforced. And just because this disclaimer may be posted in an email doesn't even mean that the policy will be followed. However, company email belongs to the company, not the enduser, and if a company is having problems with a large number of Users violating the policy in place, then why not add a disclaimer to the email. Some companies have to do it with external email. Otherwise imsext.dll would not have been written, nor would the various articles that Microsoft publish in their Knowledge Base be there. RE: Disclaimer
And supplying a disclaimer going out to the Internet is different, like HOW? Do you think every person would receive Internet mail from a company needs to be reminded that what is written inside the email is not necessarily the opinions of the Company? I never thought you were attacking me. However, it is not my decision, as a Consultant for this company, to say no, but to provide an answer to Management on whether or not it can be done, and is it feasible. I have already told them it would create additional hardware needs, due to the disclaimer being in EVERY email. They just asked what would be the easiest way to implement it, if the need arose. My job as a Consultant is to supply them with that information. -Original Message- From: Doug Hampshire [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, October 24, 2001 11:37 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Disclaimer I agree that there are some users that probably need a reminder, but as one of those managers that is trying to break out of the mold of clueless and lazy, I ask the relevant question of Do you remind employees of the associated corporate policy each time they utilize that corporate resource? Don't take offense, Dale. Doug gave a simple and quite valid answer to your issue. This a technical issue, but rather a behavioral one. As a wise sage of this list it wont [1] to say: There are seldom good technical solutions to behavioral problems [2]. If the policy is posted in an employee manual already, and employees are wantonly flouting said policy, then a very public flogging or dismissal of some employee will be far more effective than stamping a disclaimer at the bottom of all e-mails (that they probably won't read any more than they read the employee handbook). I'm still having trouble seeing a disclaimer as a solution to this. Seems like you need a popup that will appear BEFORE sending the mail. Not a paragraph that will be added after the e-mail is composed and sent. The message needs to get to the sender not the sendee. Joel K. Better yet, why not set local security policies (W2K) and registry hacks (NT) so that the users get prompted with that disclaimer every time they log on? RE: Disclaimer
In addition to that, you could write a custom form that presents a warning message before allowing your users access to the new message form! While you're at it, you could place an OK click button on the form that sends a message with the user's information and the text of your policy to a public folder as proof that they read an accepted the terms of your appropriate use policy for every message they send! I'm sure you all think this is very good advice, but I couldn't find anything about adding disclaimers or a global signature line by typing in either of those phrases into the search box. RE: DISCLAIMER
Tried what? A search for disclaimer at the location of the FAQ yields 2 hits. One relates to some MailMover product and the other is in the Exchange 5.5 FAQ. At support.microsoft.com a search on 'Exchange 5.5 and earlier versions' for the same term yields 3 hits. 1 related to 128 bit encryption, 1 related to Y2K testing and one whose excerpt section looks promising. A search at the same site for the same term in the Exchange 2000 category yields 1 hit. As for the home edition of the archives.. there is at least 1 hit on the subject in the last couple of years. -Original Message- From: Ewart, Vicki L.
