Message Tracking FAQ?

2003-02-15 Thread Paul Hutchings
Does anyone know of an Exchange 5.5 message tracking FAQ?

I'd like a short rundown on what I should be able to monitor when I don't
have a specific message ID to track.

When I have a message ID I can use advanced and track the flow of the
message on each server, however if I don't have a specific message ID I'm
not 100% sure what I should be seeing.

For example, on my new connector server using advanced tracking I can
track messages transferred in through the IMS either to everyone (no
specific recipient), or to a specific recipient.

If I do a normal (not advanced) search of all messages sent to my mailbox
nothing shows up running the track on my connector only server, and running
it on my mailbox server shows only messages from internal recipients, except
for two external emails I sent myself that I put delivery receipts on.

Message tracking is enabled at the site config on the IS and MTA site
defaults and on the IMS, and the services have all been restarted - the
tracking.log share exists, and there is info in the logs.

I suspect I'm getting the wrong end of the stick and that the message
tracking utility is really intended to track specific messages where you
have the message ID rather than be an overview tool, but I'm finding the
documentation isn't overly clear.

TIA for any info/links,
Paul

Can any one tell me of a utility or script that I can use to import the
message tracking logs and do minimum sorting of the data (preferably
freeware/shareware).

We can't use Excel because the files are in the region of 80mb and will
be larger soon. Excel can not handle the amount of records that I am
dealing with. I tried a freeware utility called CSVDB but was no good
for sorting. I basically want to be able to manipulate the data.
Especially look at the number of large messages being sent each day.

Any constructive comments would be appreciated.

I would say look for reporting software rather than trying to use a db.
The reporting software will save you a lot of headaches and look

Can any one tell me of a utility or script that I can use to
 import the
message tracking logs and do minimum sorting of the data (preferably
 freeware/shareware).

We can't use Excel because the files are in the region of
 80mb and will be
larger soon. Excel can not handle the amount of records that
 I am dealing
with. I tried a freeware utility called CSVDB but was no good
 for sorting. I
basically want to be able to manipulate the data. Especially
 look at the
number of large messages being sent each day.

Any constructive comments would be appreciated.

No, Promodag charges for the eval also.  {

I would say look for reporting software rather than trying to use a db.
The reporting software will save you a lot of headaches and look
prettier when you give it to mgmt types.

Then as Ali said use Access. Enjoy! Or if this is a one time shot.
Promodag

Thanks For your response. I did have a look at the product a few years
back
for Exchange 5.5. It was ok and if I recall was not cheap. I can't
really
justify the cost as my requirement is very short term.

Thanks

Instead of jumping through all those hoops. Why not by a 3rd party app
to do
that. this one comes to mind but there are many if you look.

Yes, you can manually deleted old tracking.log files. Or archive them.
Or let Exchange delete them.

strange problem with message tracking !!!!!!!!!!!!

2002-02-15 Thread Alexander Kasyk

first i would give a short description of our exchange organisation:
all servers with ex 2000 /sp1; 1 server which acts as local bridgehead,
hosts the connectors and fax-server (gfi) installed. 1 active/active
cluster -- they host the mailbox/public folder stores.

On to the problem: message tracking enabled on all 3 servers (with
detailed logging). worked great until we made firmware upgrades on the
storage controllers a few days ago. we had to reboot all the servers.
after the reboot (we did it in the correct way on the cluster) the servers
work very well, but i noticed that the message tracking log files became
very small on the !!2nd!! cluster node (normally they are between 4 - 12
MB per day depending on the traffic). Now they are between 400 KB and 1,3
MB (the tracking log is ok on the 2 other servers). So I decided to open
the files with an editor and i was surprised by the things i have seen (or
better 'not' seen): the only entries in the log files are those with
event id 1027 and 1028. all other events will not be logged anymore and
also outbound mail (internet mail) is logged with a 1027 id, which was
logged before with much more entries and a final 1031 ID.
so my question is: whats going on? what went wrong? How can I correct
this? We need the correct tracking because we do statistics with the log
file and other usefull things.

Message tracking

2001-12-07 Thread tweid

Weird problem. I have all the message tracking check boxes checked (MTA,
IS) at the site level. I can look at the directory on my server and the
tracking logs folder is there and populated, and I look at the SA
parameters in current control set and they point to the correct folder,
but still my message tracking does not work. Reports that it cannot find
the the tracking log files. BUT I CAN SEE THEM IN THE DIRECTORY MYSELF!

Anyone have any ideas?

I can't find where they're kept right now. The logs are retained for a
period as defined by a setting in Exchange Administrator, the default is
seven days. Unless your server is very large, they probably aren't
taking
up much space, and because they're automatically purged after the
retention
period, they won't grow much if at all. You ought to leave the setting
alone because you won't know in advance when you have to track
something.

Hi,

I have been using the message tracking center for some issues, I cannot
find any ref as to where the tracking files are kept, I'd like to
reclaim the space now that I'm done. Is it the same place as the smtp
logs or are they separate?

Thanks

Mike

RE: Message Tracking Files - Where?

2001-12-05 Thread Blunt, James H (Jim)

My tracking logs are located at:
\\servername\c$\exchsrvr\tracking.log\20011205.log

Settings for adding to the tracking logs would be: Go to the properties of
your IMS, Information Store Site Configuration or MTA Site Configuration.
On the General tab of the IS or MTA config or the Internet Mail tab of the
IMS, click the Enable message tracking option. You can add one or all of
their data to your tracking logs.

entries?. Clicking Yes to bull through the logs but the error occurs at
