RE: Auto Accept Utility stopped working

2003-08-14 Thread Mitchell Mike
How do I get the AGENT tab to show up on my Outlook? I can see some on the
resources I have working, but not on those that are not working.

Thanks,

Mike

Rob and Ed,

Success at last... I did finally get this resource to work properly. It was
just a lot of pulling and tugging and getting it all correct. I will move
the others and see how it goes.

Thanks again for all of your help.

(If we have the same setup).. In the 5.5 Admin console, expand Folders,
System Folders, and Events Root. There should be a folder in there
called
EventConfig_servername for the server that the mailbox resides on. Open the
Properties of that folder and on the General Tab click the Client
Permissions button. Add the mailbox and give it Owner rights.

So again, ensure the autoaccept script is uninstalled, do the above steps,
reinstall the autoaccept script, and ;-) it's supposed to work.

What did you mean by the mailbox needs owner rights? I did as you
suggested, but it still didn't work. I created a new resource and scheduled
them both at the same time. The new resource worked, but the old one
didn't.

Wow.. This is confusing!! Sorry.

Right. I was going to recommend being sure to uninstall the old event

It is quite possible to do a backup of Exchange 5.5 WITHOUT stopping the
services. You either use NTBackup, or use a 3rd party backup utility
with an Exchange Agent. If you decide to not use either of those 2
methods, you sure as heck better stop the Exchange services first,
otherwise you will be attempting to back up an open database file as a
flat file. Not good!

(FYI the mailbox needs Owner rights.) So if the EventConfig permissions
are set, reinstall the AutoAccept script on the mailbox and you should
be able
to test it immediately. If that doesn't work, try stopping and
starting

Hi Mike. Have you set up the client permissions for the mailbox in the
EventConfig folder? I've forgotten to do that on occasion. And I
think
I learned the hard way that if this step was missed, you need to
uninstall
the Autoaccept script again, set up the EventConfig settings, then
reinstall
the script.

A script does not move with a mailbox. You must reinstall the script on
the
new server and ensure that the Event Service is running.

If you want to back up that *file*, then yes you would have to close whatever
software is keeping the file open.

If you want to back up Exchange, however, use an Exchange-aware backup
solution like NTBACKUP and the services remain running and functional during
the backup.

It is quite possible to do a backup of Exchange 5.5 WITHOUT
 stopping the
services. You either use NTBackup, or use a 3rd party backup
 utility with
an Exchange Agent. If you decide to not use either of those
 2 methods, you
sure as heck better stop the Exchange services first,
 otherwise you will be
attempting to back up an open database file as a flat file.

If you are using the Exchange aware agent you wouldn't be aware that it was
backing up the priv.edb, pub.edb or even dir.edb, you would just select
Exchange Information Store and Exchange Directory store. Sounds to me you
are still using the file system part of Backup Exec to try and backup the
databases files.

Hi Mike. Have you set up the client permissions for the

 think
I learned the hard way that if this step was missed, you need

RE: Auto Accept Utility stopped working

2003-07-30 Thread Ben Winzenz
You aren't doing the backup correct then. You do NOT want to select the
File from the backup job. In Backup Exec, when you browse your list of
servers selections in the backup job, under your Exchange server, you
will see the hard disks and also there should be an added entry for
Microsoft Exchange or something to that effect. Actually, there will be
2 entries - one for the Mailboxes as well - don't select the Mailboxes,
just select the Information Store. That will perform an Online backup
of the Exchange databases and it will also purge your committed log
files after a successful backup. If you still aren't sure how to do an
Online backup, then go to the Veritas web site and go to their support
center. Type Exchange Online backup, or similar, and it should give you
detailed instructions on how to do that for your version.

It is quite possible to do a backup of Exchange 5.5 WITHOUT stopping the
services. You either use NTBackup, or use a 3rd party backup utility
with an Exchange Agent. If you decide to not use either of those 2
methods, you sure as heck better stop the Exchange services first,
otherwise you will be attempting to back up an open database file as a
flat file. Not good!

Hello All,

First, wanted to say that you guys have always been a great help in the
past. I have a simple, but probably dumb question. I need some ammo
though before I get back to one of my employees about what he's doing.
Can someone just verify what I'm saying...
It is not possible to back-up the PRIV.EDB files on Exchange 5.5 unless
you stop the Exchange services right? One of my guys is trying to run a
veritas backup that includes the PRIV.EDB file, and the file is skipped
during the back-up operation. I advised him as to why it does this, and
how to correctly do it. He still swears that it's veritas software
screwing up...

Any help would be great,

Thanks

No, you don't have to stop the services.

Please clarify how you are using veritas; i.e. are you looking on the
relevant drive and ticking priv.edb as a file to backup? If so, this won't
work, you need to tick 'Microsoft Exchange Information Store' in the veritas
directory tree. If this doesn't appear then your exchange agent isn't
installed properly.

RE: Auto Accept Utility stopped working

2003-07-30 Thread Ben Winzenz
You cannot backup up the actual priv.edb file unless the services are
stopped. Period. As explained before, it is because the database is an
open file. Since it is open and in use, it cannot be locked by the
backup program, therefore, it is skipped.

Unless there is some immense value in accessing the priv.edb with your
3rd party software, I would not do it. Exchange has utilities that come
with it for extracting mailboxes (Exmerge) and it can also extract
messages based on subject. If you absolutely have to use your 3rd party
program, then you will likely have to schedule a 2nd backup job that
only backs up the priv.edb and make sure that you stop the Exchange
services before the backup job.

Right in that case the latest version of PowerTools is able to read the
backup tape and get the priv.edb file directly from the Online Backup. Note
I wrote online backup not offline backup. I don't know how this works as
well use Netbackup but that is the way it is supposed to work, if not then
call Ontrack support. You are never going to be able to backup the priv.edb
unless you stop the information store which is not a good idea. If it can't
read the tape directly then you would need to do an online restore to a
separate server where the priv.edb will be located and you can then use
PowerTools to access it. We have evaluated PowerTools and were not overly
impressed it couldn't read priv.edb files if the database had been under
load and created lots of transaction logs. I believe a newer version
currently in beta and to be released in September may work better.

We are ticking off the option for the Information Store, but have now
modified the job to backup the PRIV.EDB as well. Only reason we're doing
this is because we would like to have the actual PRIV.EDB in a backup media

No, you don't have to stop the services.

Please clarify how you are using veritas; i.e. are you looking on the
relevant drive and ticking priv.edb as a file to backup? If so, this won't
work, you need to tick 'Microsoft Exchange Information Store' in the veritas
directory tree. If this doesn't appear then your exchange agent isn't

It is quite possible to do a backup of Exchange 5.5 WITHOUT
stopping the services. You either use NTBackup, or use a 3rd
party backup utility with an Exchange Agent. If you decide
to not use either of those 2 methods, you sure as heck better
stop the Exchange services first, otherwise you will be
attempting to back up an open database file as a flat file.

Better to restore the Exchange Information Store to your recovery server
from your Exchange-aware backup, and run the utility there. Not only will
you have a transactionally accurate store that will actually mount, you can
use that opportunity to practice your disaster recovery skills.

It would be nice but don't cross your fingers. The current version of
PowerTools has limited use, if you can successfully restore the Exchange
server from an online backup and it is consistent then you can mount it and
just go into the database with Outlook or Exmerge. The reason to use
PowerTools would be if you had a corrupt database and just want to get out
of it as much information as you can. This is how the product is sort of
marketed but in the real world it is not able to do that. Maybe the next
version will do a better job but we'll have to wait and see.

To go back to your original question, don't bother trying to backup the edb
files for this app it is just not worth it. Follow the advice of wise old Ed
C and be happy with online restores. One day you will need to be able to do
this in the heat of the moment, you will be glad you have practised it
before.

RE: Auto Accept Utility stopped working

2003-07-30 Thread Paul kondilys
It's kinda cool actually. Could use some more work and they do have a new
version coming out soon. The utility is installed onto the server/WS that
has the tape drives mounted. You then mount your Exchange backup tape that
has the IS on it. The tool scans the tape, finds the IS, and tells you what
files are in the IS. You then choose the file you want for example the
PRIV.EDB, and then select where to dump it or copy it. After you're done
copying the PRIV.EDB you use the utility to open the PRIV.EDB and it shows
all the mailboxes and their messages. You can then select which mailbox or
message you want to recover, and then dump it into a .pst or directly into
the user's mailbox. The thing that sucks about the utility is that it would
have been greater if you could just scan the tape, find the IS, then the
PRIV.EDB, and then access it directly from the tape instead of copying it
somewhere. When you're in my type of environment where my IS alone is over
100 GB's it would be easier..

This powertools sounds interesting. When it reads the online backup from the
tape does it need to read the whole thing or can it locate a mailbox,
message etc on the tape and extract it? I tried to find out on the website
but it's not exactly clear as to whether you can do this...

We've had to do a few recovery restores to get back mailboxes in the past
and while this is dead easy, it takes hours to restore the IS from tape.

Right in that case the latest version of PowerTools is able
to read the backup tape and get the priv.edb file directly
from the Online Backup. Note I wrote online backup not
offline backup. I don't know how this works as well use
Netbackup but that is the way it is supposed to work, if not
then call Ontrack support. You are never going to be able to
backup the priv.edb unless you stop the information store
which is not a good idea. If it can't read the tape directly
then you would need to do an online restore to a separate
server where the priv.edb will be located and you can then

One day you will need to be able to do
this in the heat of the moment, you will be glad you have practised it
before.

Thanks Paul,

Must say I am not overly impressed with the Ontrack tool as well. We're
just trying to cut down on the copy process after the utility finds the
PRIV.EDB in the information store on the backup media. It would be great if
it could just read from the tape, open it, and then access the mailboxes, or
messages you want to access.

set, reinstall the AutoAccept script on the mailbox and you should be able
to test it immediately. If that doesn't work, try stopping and starting
the Event service again and retest.

Hi Mike. Have you set up the client permissions for the mailbox in the
EventConfig folder? I've forgotten to do that on occasion. And I think
I learned the hard way that if this step was missed, you need to uninstall
the Autoaccept script again, set up the EventConfig settings, then reinstall
the script.

I checked the event Service and it was running. Nothing happened.

I then stopped and started the service again. To no avail. Nothing

2003-06-30 Thread Sargent, Rob
(If we have the same setup).. In the 5.5 Admin console, expand Folders,
System Folders, and Events Root. There should be a folder in there called

Hi Mike. Have you set up the client permissions for the mailbox in the
EventConfig folder? I've forgotten to do that on occasion. And I think
I learned the hard way that if this step was missed, you need to uninstall
the Autoaccept script again, set up the EventConfig settings, then reinstall
the script.

Ed,

Thanks. I thought that was the case, so I deleted the AutoAccept folder on
the resource. I then ran the AutoAccept utility script on that new resource.
I checked the event Service and it was running. Nothing happened.

I then stopped and started the service again. To no avail. Nothing
happens. Help

Thanks... Ed, you are the best, or so they say!!!

A script does not move with a mailbox. You must reinstall the script on the
new server and ensure that the Event Service is running.

Good morning,

Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5 SP4

I moved server of my resource mailboxes for one server to another. Once I
did this my Auto Accept script stopped working. I ran the Auto Accept
script on these resources again, and again no auto accepting? What am I
doing wrong?

Thanks,

What did you do to get it working?

Rob and Ed,

Success at last... I did finally get this resource to work properly.
It was just a lot of pulling and tugging and getting it all correct. I
will move the others and see how it goes.

Thanks again for all of your help.

(If we have the same setup).. In the 5.5 Admin console, expand Folders,
System Folders, and Events Root. There should be a folder in there
called
EventConfig_servername for the server that the mailbox resides on. Open
the Properties of that folder and on the General Tab click the Client
Permissions button. Add the mailbox and give it Owner rights.

So again, ensure the autoaccept script is uninstalled, do the above
steps, reinstall the autoaccept script, and ;-) it's supposed to work.

What did you mean by the mailbox needs owner rights? I did as you
suggested, but it still didn't work. I created a new resource and
scheduled them both at the same time. The new resource worked, but the
old one didn't.

Wow.. This is confusing!! Sorry.

Right. I was going to recommend being sure to uninstall the old event
script first as well.

(FYI the mailbox needs Owner rights.) So if the EventConfig permissions
are set, reinstall the AutoAccept script on the mailbox and you should
be able
to test it immediately. If that doesn't work, try stopping and
starting
the Event service again and retest.

Rob,

I found it and set the permissions. I suppose it takes time to synch it
up..

Rob

I am fairly new at AutoAccept utilities... Where do I look for the
EventConfig folder? Sorry.
