No, he looks better after the viewer's had a few beers (or preferably
something stronger).

What backup/restore solutions are recommended for a large Exchange 2000

RE: Backup solution for Exchange 2000 on an EMC SAN

2003-01-30 Thread Depp, Dennis M.
I had looked into CommValt, but when they heard we were also using
Legato, they didn't seem to want to give me an estimate or even talk to
me. From what I read, I really liked their backup solution for
Exchange. Alas I will have to resort to the Ed Crowley Never Restore
Method instead!

RE: Backup solution for Exchange 2000 on an EMC SAN

2003-01-30 Thread Mark Harford
There is always that concern, but many of us went along with Sybari Antigen
which was not ostensibly supported by MS. Also I believe EMC developed this
solution in conjunction with their partners at Redmond.

There may be an issue in that your average PSS engineer simply won't know
the SAN technology and EMC-specific jargon in order to help talk you through
a disaster, so you'd need an EMC contract that provided DR advice and
training.

Still, no-one here seems to admit to using it!

Mark

And do I really want to buy all those extra expensive EMC disks? And do

There is always that concern, but many of us went along with Sybari
Antigen which was not ostensibly supported by MS. Also I believe EMC
developed this solution in conjunction with their partners at Redmond.

There may be an issue in that your average PSS engineer simply won't
know the SAN technology and EMC-specific jargon in order to help talk
you through a disaster, so you'd need an EMC contract that provided DR
advice and training.

Still, no-one here seems to admit to using it!

RE: Backup solution for Exchange 2000 on an EMC SAN

2003-01-30 Thread Etts, Russell
WHAA

All the guys that I have spoken to at PSS try and keep you away from a
cluster. Here is what Microsoft recommends...

Active Passive, and the cluster should do nothing else but Exchange (I know,
everyone knows it - but it bears repeating).

I have a cluster here (currently active/active but that is being changed),
and I can tell you this much

There are extra steps in making a FE/BE situation work (and it can be a
hassle). Clusters cannot run the SRS service. The cluster will roll
itself on occasion, and some people will have to close and reopen Outlook.
Exchange 2K is complex enough, why would you want to spend extra money to
make it more complex? Please make sure you know what you're getting
yourself into. I wish I could get a hold of the guy who talked my boss into
a cluster and kick him in the ding ding!

Thanks

why would you want to spend extra money to make it more complex?

By that logic, should we be using a simpler more affordable messaging

I agree with you, though... your boss actively suggesting a cluster for

WHAA

All the guys that I have spoken to at PSS try and keep you away from a
cluster. Here is what Microsoft recommends...

Active Passive, and the cluster should do nothing else but Exchange (I
know,
everyone knows it - but it bears repeating).

I have a cluster here (currently active/active but that is being
changed),
and I can tell you this much

There are extra steps in making a FE/BE situation work (and it can be a
hassle). Clusters cannot run the SRS service. The cluster will roll
itself on occasion, and some people will have to close and reopen
Outlook.
Exchange 2K is complex enough, why would you want to spend extra money
to
make it more complex? Please make sure you know what you're getting
yourself into. I wish I could get a hold of the guy who talked my boss
into
a cluster and kick him in the ding ding!

Thanks

Russell

RE: Backup solution for Exchange 2000 on an EMC SAN

2003-01-30 Thread Narkinsky, Brian
EMC claims to have a supported solution. AS far as I know (and ran an EMC
salesmen out of a meeting on this issue) it is not supported by MS. EMC's
claim to support comes from a joint whitepaper they and MS did. To me that
doesn't mean PSS can help.

Snapshots I guess will be supported in Titanium but, until then tread
carefully on them.

Honestly not sure what advantage Snapshots give. Write the savesets to disk
and then back that up.

 enterprise backup solution.

What backup/restore solutions are recommended for a large Exchange
2000 cluster running on an EMC SAN. We have been running netbackup
for our Exchange 5.5 environment, and have been quite dissatisfied

RE: Backup solution for Exchange 2000 on an EMC SAN

2003-01-30 Thread Roger Seielstad
Of course you can. But there's a finite chance greater than zero that you
will snapshot the database and logs when the combination is in an
inconsistent state. At which point it is not a lossless backup/restore
process.

BackupExec works really well, but let me suggest an alternative.

Run NTBackup and backup Exchange to a disk file, then back that file up with
a normal file backup from NetBackup.

Direct to disk locally is really fast. And you don't have to go to tape to
restore from the last backup, either.

Run NTBackup and backup Exchange to a disk file, then back

RE: Backup solution for Exchange 2000 on an EMC SAN

2003-01-29 Thread Bendall, Paul
Surely the choice of backup device will have a greater effect on backup
performance than the software. Backing up to a local drive is going to be
faster than sending it across the network to a centralised DAT device. SDLT
devices are faster than DLT, etc., etc. In addition you need to compromise
between backup speed and restore speed. We have a dedicated backup LAN to
SDLT and LTO robots, the backup is streamlined across tape drives, while
backup is fast restore times are becoming a problem.

Paul

That's not entirely true.

Having used ArkenServer and BackupExec on the same hardware, BuEX was 2-3
times faster doing Exchange backups, from the same servers to the same

Well the Microsoft Engineers seem to think it will work quite well. I
will
let you know how it works out.

I thought you couldn't cluster Exchange.
BTW, we're running the same setup (albeit probably much smaller) and
backing up using BE 8.6. We haven't run across any problems so far.

BackupExec works really well, but let me suggest an alternative.

Run NTBackup and backup Exchange to a disk file, then back that file up
with a normal file backup from NetBackup.

What backup/restore solutions are recommended for a large
 Exchange 2000
cluster running on an EMC SAN. We have been running netbackup for our
Exchange 5.5 environment, and have been quite dissatisfied with its
 performance.
