Intel has a util that generates workload. It appears to be moving to
sourceforge, but this link should still work.

Why not use Load Simulator? It would a more realistic test and will
actually give you an idea on how your hardware will react to Exchange. It's
free as well.

RE: CPU Stress Test

2002-03-28 Thread Schwartz, Jim

Compaq has a utility called Meatgrinder. They don't let anyone have it of
course, unless you're a Compaq engineer. (Or they accidentally leave the
executable on the server they are testing). See if Dell has a similar one.
It lets you stress any part of the system from the CPU to the drives.

RE: CPU Stress Test

2002-03-28 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

There is a program called CPUBURN (do a google search) that is designed to
make your CPU work hard (and heat up). This can be run in a dos window or
right from dos.

You should also consider running a good ram test. I have had good luck with
memtest-86 from:

http://www.teresaudio.com/memtest86/

This works from a boot floppy. I always run this or simmtester
(www.simmtester.com) on a new machine before installing the OS.

You could run any of the distributed computing clients (one on each
CPU if you have a dual setup) such as SETI, RC5, etc.

On the more serious note. A few years ago I bought a suit of software
testing tools from Ziff-Davis. WinBench, WinStone...etc. These were
suppose to be the tools that they tested their hardware reviews on. I am

This gets into a fine distinction. The WinBench suite was a
benchmarking suite that tests how fast your given configuration can
complete a pre-designed set of tasks. It can then compare those
results to other configuration. There is no promise that it will max
your CPU's at all. Theoretically you could have more CPU power then
the program could tap.

If you use some simulator or other program that is designed to max
the CPU load or use all the free CPU cycles available, then you
stress your CPU.

It really depends on what the original poster was looking for,

Well, I was looking for a CPU stress test(One that tops out the CPU). I
found that Windows2k has one in the resource kit. It stresses shared memory

Anybody know of a free program to stress out my server for a few
hours? I need to test this thing before I throw exch2k on it. It
  has been a little
buggy before. Dell PowerEdge 4400. Thanks.
