RE: Exchange 5.5 Server hammer-age.

2003-08-18 Thread Bob Sadler
Run the Task Manager on your Exchange Server and see what's eating up
all the CPU Pocesses.

We have this problem occasionally with mssdmn.exe running 100%
utilization. We just kill this process and things go back to normal.

As of yet, no one at MS has been able to explain why this occurs.

Until recently, our Exchange 5.5 Server has been running smoothly.
Lately however, it has been running S..L..O..W on occasions. Our server
is older (Dell 6300 with Dual 400 MHZ processors and 1.5 GB of
memory. 700 users). The only thing that's changed is we have
recently started upgrading some of our NT 4.0 workstations to Windows XP
workstations. Almost all those users receive the following message the
first time they logon

Outlook is retrieving data from the Microsoft Exchange Server
Exchange. You can cancel the request or minimize this message to the
Windows taskbar until Outlook closes the message automatically.

Some of them receive the message more frequently. Maybe the two issues
aren't related, but I thought I'd start here, since it's the only thing
that's changed recently. Is anybody else having issues using XP
Professional with Exchange 5.5?

Thanks.

Running fine for us in a mixed nt/2k/xp area. We have about 800 users on a
PIII-450 Xeon with 1gig of ram and 3 arms. No performance problems for any
of the users. Have you checked your DNS and WINS setting on the XP systems,
how does name resolution to your exchange server work from the cmd prompt.
Ping times, etc...

RE: Exchange 5.5 Server hammer-age.

2003-08-18 Thread Barry Horner
I'll wager it's an XP connectivity issue with your 5.5 box as that's what I saw here
during our migration. On the client side we got rid of NetBios, made sure DNS was
properly configured [on both client and server!!] and then dropped an lmhost file on
the machine. The lmhost file worked like a charm for our XP clients but had no effect
on our W2K clients as those systems worked right the first time and really didn't need
any tweaking. WINS may also be a good replacement for the lmhost file - whichever
suits your needs best.

RE: Exchange 5.5 Server hammer-age.

2003-08-18 Thread John Matteson
Just to give you a comparison, I'm running a Dell PE 6600, 2 Gigs RAM,
dual 1.4 GHz processors, 900 users spread over 3 Message Databases and
two RAID arrays. We still get the flag. I get the flag when I'm sitting
still too, no manual activity on the laptop that I'm using.

The flag is set by Outlook and is an indication of slow response by the
Exchange server. The timeout for the flag can be set in the registry, or
the flag can be turned off all together. The only thing I've found so
far is that it's an incentive to performance tune your Exchange server
and then look for other reasons for slow response time. The flag can
also pop up when the workstation is doing some background work, like
rendering a graphic and trying to update free/busy time on the Exchange
server at the same time.

It's an indication of performance problems, just not specific as to the
cause.

You have the Q article that relates to setting this flag? We used to have
it with NAV in MAPI/VAPI mode, then we went to MAPI only and scheduled scans
so the store wasn't always being re-scanned when the latest virus
definitions arrived.
