Remember when accessing Exchange sometimes via POP3 the username may not
be listed exactly how you would think

I'd still like to know Why the users are using POP3 to access their

Re: Exchange and pop3

2003-03-25 Thread Chris Scharff
What errors are in the event viewer on the Exchange server when this occurs?
If you run a network sniffer, what does the POP3 conversation look like?
POP3 authentication isn't exactly a complex thing

telnet mailserver 110
user username
pass password

You said you are running Windows XP with the POP3 connector. Windows XP is
an operating system and a POP3 connector is not a mail client. Did you mean
to say that you are running some variant of Outlook with the internet e-mail
service?

Exchange seems like an awfully expensive POP3 server.

RE: Exchange and pop3

2003-03-25 Thread Bob Sadler
Did you check the event logs as Chris suggested? They should tell you
everything you need to know concerning this issue. My gut reaction is
that the users are NOT logging in with the account name, but instead are
using something like their Alias name.

Also, do you have cross-over account names? Could you have two accounts
with the same name? The event viewer is where you need to be. Once
there, find where a user having trouble logging in is and read it!

RE: Exchange and pop3

2003-03-25 Thread Aaron Brasslett
Audit purposes? Such as security audit? I'd say that you've got bigger
issues if your users are using POP3 and sending clear text passwords.

My opinion is turn off account lockout and forgo the audit crap until you
can convert these users to MAPI connections.

I never found a solution that addressed the root of the problem.

Yeah thanks for your help.. Do you have any ideas or program
recommendation on a quick, easy and low end user involvement for the
mapi setup

Audit purposes? Such as security audit? I'd say that you've got bigger
issues if your users are using POP3 and sending clear text passwords.

My opinion is turn off account lockout and forgo the audit crap until
you can convert these users to MAPI connections.

I never found a solution that addressed the root of the problem.

was happening. Why not just disable account lockouts?

RE: Exchange and pop3

2003-03-25 Thread Aaron Brasslett
There are many options for re-configuring Outlook to MAPI depending on the
version of Outlook. The more difficult task is getting all the email in
those PST files back on the server.

RE: Exchange and pop3

2003-03-25 Thread Nunez, Danny
Have you tried to log in with domain\username? The problem may be that the
client machine is not logged onto the domain and therefore the full username
(with domain) is not passed.

Just a thought.

RE: Exchange and pop3

2003-03-25 Thread Lum, David
Disable account lockout is a band-aid and shouldn't be the fix.

Do the event logs show where the lockout are coming from? The same PC's that
have the problems? What e-mail client are you using?
