RE: IMC - no inbound mail

2001-11-21 Thread Durkee, Peter

Have you set your own domain as inbound under the IMC Routing tab? Are people who try
to send to you getting NDRs, and if so, what do they say?

Subject: IMC - no inbound mail

I'm setting up a new IMC on Exch 5.5 - outgoing mail works fine but the
Exchange server is not responding to incoming mail reqests - log shown
below. Servers can connect to the IMC but the IMC does not give the
correct response to start receiving mail. Other machines on the local LAN
use the Exchange server as as SMTP server and Exchange responds to them
OK. I'm sure I've seen this before and it was something silly - any
thoughts?

Thanks

Andy Russell

RE: IMC - no inbound mail

What's going on on the routing page of the IMS? How about on the
connections page of the IMS?

RE: IMC - no inbound mail

2001-11-21 Thread Andy Russell

Thanks for reply - the routing page shows some limits on who can reroute
via the smtp - but as I understand it that only applies to routing to
foreign domains, not to inbound traffic. On the connections page I just
have the address of our isp as a forwarder - all mail goes out fine so
we're sure that works. Our isp has the address of our router which uses
NAT to translate to the mail server - again this bit must work as the smtp
protocol log shows various internet mail servers trying to connect - the
only bit that's not working seems to be the return path so the imc can
respond with an acknowledgement and start receiving the message. The imc
does respond to hosts inside the network using it as an smtp server to
reroute out to internet which is the same sort of thing as this mail comes
inbound first before being rerouted.

Let me know if you think of anything I'm missing - I've got a nagging
doubt that it may be DNS settings on the mailserver or something...

Thanks

Andy

RE: IMC - no inbound mail

2001-11-21 Thread Andy Russell

Thanks for the reply - yes our own domain is set as inbound. No NDR's yet
as the mail servers who are trying to send haven't given up trying yet -
we are just seeing an increasing amount of connection attempts. It really
does seem as though all is working except the IMC responding to the
inbound requests - yet it responds to inbound requests from clients (such
as Unix boxes) using the server as an SMTP server to reroute out to
internet. I'm unsure as to what needs to be in place for the IMC to
respond - whether it uses it's own DNS or similar - it certainly has a
route out on port 25 as it's able to contact our ISP's mail forwarded
where it sends all it's stuff. It doesn't do it's own DNS for regular
outbound just forwards to a host.

Thanks

Andy
