RE: Newsgroups on Exchange? any Alternatives?
I'm not sure that Exchange supports your definition of newsgroup. If I remember correctly you can do some tricky stuff using Public Folders but don't remember...I believe that Ed Crowley (Did I spell it right? grin) has written some stuff about this? -Original Message- From: Arnold, Paul [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, December 13, 2001 9:57 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Newsgroups on Exchange? any Alternatives? Hello all, I have requests from 2 groups of users for bulletin boards and newsgroups. My webmaster wanted to implement something via our intranet server, but I told her to hold off because Exchange supports newsgroups. I was thinking implement local newsgroups on Exchange, then shop around for a way to get a web interface for it. (I have a user community that forgets what Public Folders are for, but they use the intranet a lot.) My question is - do I want to go down this route? or is somebody using something better? I have an email from a user that wants eRoom - www.eroom.com - and it looks nice, but I had never heard of it. Any comments would be appreciated. Well, any RELEVANT comments. :) Thanks Paul LEGAL NOTICE - Unless expressly stated otherwise, this message is confidential and may be privileged. It is intended for the addressee(s) only. Exchange has newsgroup connection to retrieve newgroups that are sign up to, but you need a ISP or site that will support you. RE: Newsgroups on Exchange? any Alternatives?
I refuse to limit my comments only to the relevant ones... It breaks my thought process. Yes, you can do newsgroups in Exchange. They can be accessible via a newsreader (e.g. OE), Outlook or the web via OWA. One could write a custom interface to it, in fact Microsoft has written a custom web based NNTP interface for the microsoft.com website. There are also a number of free[1] or low cost packages out there which provide some level of NNTP integration. There is an NNTP hack for vBulletin for example. Things such as eRoom or Groove (among others) are also interesting methods for collaboration. What I would suggest is that you gather requirements from a number of folks, including those who have specifically asked for this functionality. Ask them to rank what is most important to them in terms of features, and what would be nice in terms of optional ones. Find out what the goals are of this type of collaboration. Then ask them how much they're willing to pay (from a budgetary standpoint) to make it happen. As an Admin, facilitating the business of doing business is certainly a road we want to go down, but you're right to be looking for a roadmap before beginning the journey. [1] As in beer. RE: Newsgroups on Exchange? any Alternatives?
You can use it to run internal only newsgroups as well. Or newsgroups which you publish for customers to access directly. Not that all that many people do.
