I understand that when you do a restore there is a procedure that you can
do it with the server you are restoring is online and the new server with
the same name is online. Has anyone ever restored Exchange to a new server
like that? And when you copy the logs to the new server it would still be
thinking it is the old server.

 Thanks

Conversation: Restoring Mail to a Public Folder
Subject: Restoring Mail to a Public Folder

Windows 2000 SP3
Exchange 2000 SP3

I have Deleted Item Retention set for 31 days on my Public Folders I
have gone into the folder and chose Recover deleted items, chose the
offending message and chose recover. However, the message is not in the
folder that I highlighted and chose to recover from, it is also no
longer in my list of deleted items.

Questions:
1. Any idea on where this may have restored to?
2. Is there any way to query the Store to determine where it might be?

Thanks in Advance,
Joshua

OK, you can all get on me about not testing this process before today,
but just what until I can recover the data. Thanks. I have user running
Outlook 2002 and he was having some problems, so I moved ALL his data to
his personal folder, deleted his mailbox and recreated it. (Drastic I
know) Well it turns out the 1000 of his sent items were not copied. So
I need to restore ( yes I purged his mailbox). I have called Veritas and
been searching around, but want to find a good step by step doc on how
to restore in the Information Store. Most of what I've seen has to do
with complete disaster recovery. I only need one users sent items

I thought I could just recreate another storage group and reinstall the
IS to it so I can keep it on the same server, but I am not sure that
will work.

Can you give me some direction?

Thanks

Vincent,

Try this:

Build a duplicate Exchange server machine - off production network, restore
whole IS there.
Exmerge out that persons Sent Items and then sneaker-net those sent items(as
a pst file) to the users computer.

I want to restore exchange 5.5 to a test server.
The server itself is identical to my live exchange server - 5.5, sp4,

I installed exchange 5.5, sp4 on test server.

I restored exchange from overnight backup tape(using Veritas backup exec
w/exchange agent)

I can start the Directory Services, but nothing else.

I tried to run isinteg -patch but received error, missing logs. I also
tried running isinteg -pri - test, message, folders but received error
telling me to run isinteg - patch

Any help?

Subject: Restoring Exchange 5.5 from Veritas online backup

Hello All -

I want to restore exchange 5.5 to a test server.
The server itself is identical to my live exchange server - 5.5, sp4, NT4.0
sp6a

I installed exchange 5.5, sp4 on test server.

I restored exchange from overnight backup tape(using Veritas backup exec
w/exchange agent)

I can start the Directory Services, but nothing else.

I tried to run isinteg -patch but received error, missing logs.
I also tried running isinteg -pri - test, message, folders but received error
telling me to run isinteg - patch

Any help?

File sizes as shown in the directory do not change until the file is

I am restoring the Information Store to a recovery server that was
backed up with NT Backup. I have been restoring for about 4 hours now
and I am beginning to wonder if I am just spinning my wheels. Does
anyone know if a restore throws the data right back to
d:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\pub.edb | priv.edb or to a temp file first and then
to the file? The size of the .edb's has not changed in the four hours .
. .priv.edb is 18 gb and pub is 4 gb. And I am sure there is no way to
say Just give me the Pub.edb?

David,

You could always purchase something like 'KVS Enterprise Vault' restore each
backup and archive it to the Vault in turn and then use it's indexing search
system (words or phrases) to locate information in body text and
attachments.

Subject: Restoring an old (no longer existing) server

Current setup:
- Exchange 2000 sp2 on mailbox servers and a single 5.5 sp4 IMC
server
- Currently using NTBackup for backups and Antigen 6.5 for
virus/content filtering

I was just informed that, due to a lawsuit, I must restore an old 5.5 server
that no longer exists and restore the entire database (not brick-level) for
a period of about different 8 months. I have the databases on a month-end
tape from each of those months and those tapes were made use ArcServe. I
also have long since reused that server. Once the database is restored on
the new server, I must then go through every email from every user and
search for text in either the subject AND the body. After this is done for
one month I'm to blow everything away and start all over again with the next
month's tape.

My question is how in the hell am I going to accomplish this? Building the
server and recreating the Exchange environment is easy enough but I'm
confused on the restore and the searching parts. If I have to buy something
like Trend for the searching I guess it could be done and charged to the
client but I prefer not to. As for the backups, since I cannot bring this
server onto our network and the backup server that has ArcServe is obviously
on the network, how do I do this? My best guess is to use a cross-connect
cable and bring the backup server offline during the restore time. Any
other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

RE: Restoring an old (no longer existing) server

2002-04-10 Thread Hurst, Paul

Glenn,

Create one vault store (even on a live one Vault server) as only interested
in searching not retrieving security etc; when the emails are archived don't
bother to set a shortcut, so it is only held in the index and archive. Do
this for each restore and you've got a SIS archive of the servers accessed
via IE and searchable, Voila!!

Agreed Paul,

KVS Enterprise Vault would be a good way to go, however not sure how the
vault-enabling of mailboxes would work in that situation (since you are
constantly reloading Exchange). You will need additional hardware to support
the Vault Store and the Vaults, however for the sort of operation David is
talking about, it would probably be a good solution.

I was reading in the MS Disaster Recovery paper that you do not need to name
the server the same name as the one you are restoring from if you are just
restoring the info store and grabbing one mailbox. Does anyone know if the
same holds true for one public folder and its contents? Can you restore just
pub.edb and then run the DS/IS Consistency checker and retrieve the public
folder if the server has a different name than the server the pub.edb was
backed up off of?

TIA

RE: Restoring Public Folder

2002-04-09 Thread Roger Seielstad

You are correct - there is no need to have the same name.

After restoring and running the IS/DS adjuster, you do need to go into the
Public Folder tree and add a replica of the folder(s) to the restore server
before you'll be able to recover them.

The searching part: http://www.sherpasoftware.com/MAEXchOverview.htm or
similar.

The restore machine part: Restore to a new machine, different name, same
site and org name (choose to create new during install).

Restore backup tape part: No idea, never used Arcserve... Hopefully it
allows for a redirected restore, otherwise you likely need a backup device
attached to the local machine.

other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

RE: Restoring an old (no longer existing) server

2002-04-09 Thread Ely, Don

Uh, I didn't play with Exchange at the time, cuz the company I work for and
the location I was at ran Sendmail. I have since resolved most of that.
Not to mention, there comes a time in my career when Exchange doesn't do it
for me anymore. I personally enjoy the security aspects of networking and
designing new ADS networks, not to mention security audits on networks.
Being an Administrator doesn't pay to well and isn't really that fun.

I can tell you this, I've been working with Exchange since the days of 4.0.
I am certified in Exchange 5.5 and soon will be in Exchange 2K and I can
install/configure/troubleshoot with the best on this list. My little OOO
was a mistake on my part as I wasn't familiar with the servers in the new
location I moved to. OOO's were disabled almost instantly after someone's'
reply to me. Yes, even though I was out of the office, I checked my email,
saw the problem and immediately rectified it.

Tell me this David, have you ever seen me post a question here? I would
say not, you can check the archives, I doubt you will find anything in the
last 6 years. You wanna know why I don't post questions? Because I know
most of the answers or I know where to get them.

Like Daniel and the other real Exchange guru's here, I have done hundreds of
DR scenario's for clients with a 99% recovery rate. I would imagine my
skill set is just fine... Unlike others around here...

That said, you can crawl back under the stone from which you crawled
from

Far be it for me to offend the all-knowing but it was you who left your OOA
on to this entire list last month. Isn't that one of those seamless
administrative tasks you don't want to help others with? Maybe that's the
real reason behind the rant... Furthermore, when I emailed you in jest
about it, the reply from you was Unfortunately, I don't play with Exchange,
but it's fixed now. That sure sounds like someone I want to help me. So
Daniel, cash or charge?

You apparently don't do much consulting... $225 an hour is rather
reasonable if you have any need for your data. You make the choice, I've
had many clients willingly pay that much for their data.

Oh, and another point to all of you BAS (c) trolls, we don't get paid to
help your dumb a$$es out so don't expect to have your hand held through
every little, seamless administrative task. Do your own research, RTFM,
read some books, take a class, and then compose a reasonable, thought out
email detailing what you would like to do, what research you have done, and
any questions that have resulted due to your findings.

I had a link to post for the trolls but it appears someone cried to MS about
it. Damn, I hate it when that happens. :o)

As I seem to recall you mentioning once that you USED to work for MS, is it
really fair to expect the same rates as MS Consulting currently charges? By
the way, I don't think my question was posed in such a way as to require a
step-by-step answer. I know how to do the restore, I was looking to see if
there was an easier way that I had not thought of and if anyone has been
through a similar process. I kind of thought that's what these lists were
supposed to be about???

I was about to give step-by-step info but realized that that does not put
bread on the table.

 Current setup:
 - Exchange 2000 sp2 on mailbox servers and a single 5.5 sp4 IMC server
 - Currently using NTBackup for backups and Antigen 6.5 for
 virus/content filtering

I was just informed that, due to a lawsuit, I must restore an old 5.5
server
that no longer exists and restore the entire database (not
 brick-level)
for
a period of about different 8 months. I have the databases on a
month-end tape from each of those months and those tapes were made use
ArcServe. I also have long since reused that server. Once the
database is restored on the new server, I must then go through every
email from every user and search for text in either

I was reading in the MS Disaster Recovery paper that you do not need to
name
the server the same name as the one you are restoring from if you are just
restoring the info store and grabbing one mailbox. Does anyone know if the
same holds true for one public folder and its contents? Can you restore
just
pub.edb and then run the DS/IS Consistency checker and retrieve the public
folder if the server has a different name than the server the pub.edb was
 backed up off of?

How can I restore an individual mailbox from a full backup i.e. I stopped
all the exchange services and backed up all the Exchange folders(which
include dsadata, mdbdata, mtadata, Add-Ins, bin, insdata, kmsdata, imcdata
and all other exchange folders).

The process I tried was, I installed Exchange on another server (with same
organization and site name as the main one)and copied the restored
dsadata, mdbdata, mtadata (i.e. the main information store folders)in this
server. I had to stop all the Exchange services to copy these folders.
WHen I tries to restart the services they wouldnt start not am i able to
Exchange Administrator. I am not sure if this a correct process.

Can anyone tell me the correct process to restore individual mailboxes,
messages to a newly installed exchange server from the full backup.
Any/all input would be appreciated.

Thanks!!
