Smart hosts

2002-12-18 Thread Caines, Max
We are running Exchange 2000 SP3 on two servers in the same organisation. The second
one has only been added recently, and only has one mailbox on it so far. We set up the
original server's SMTP virtual server to use a smarthost which is a UNIX server, as it
isn't accessible from the Internet, and can't access it either. Now we've added the
second server, and set up its virtual server in a similar way. I was expecting the two
Exchange servers to communicate directly when handling messages for mailboxes on each
other (i.e. in the Exchange organisation), but use the smart host for all other mail.
However, this isn't what's happening. Instead, all messages for mail stores not on the
same server are going to the UNIX system, and the format of the message bodies looks
pretty odd (lots of 8-bit data, for example). The SMTP interaction seems to break down
after the bulk of the message has been received, and the UNIX server claims that the
Exchange server has gone away (timeout).

A complication with this is that the primary address for all recipients in the
organisation ends in a domain that is shared with the UNIX server. However, I've
followed the instructions in Microsoft's Q321721 (shared address spaces), and until we
added the second server, all messages were delivered fine, to mailboxes on both the
Exchange and UNIX server. It's still only the messages between the two Exchange
servers that have a problem.

Should I be using an SMTP connector rather than just the virtual server? Can anyone
shed any light on what's going on?

RE: SMTP connector and smart hosts

2002-09-19 Thread Davy Rowland

Hi,

One option would be to create a CNAME in DNS for your two smtp servers, give
the CNAME something like smtp.mycompany.com and use this alias as the smart
host. You can then round robin between the two servers and provide failover
if one of them goes down.

Is there a way to put multiple smart hosts in the General Tab on the SMTP
connectors? I have two bridgehead servers I want to use to send messages
to. One in CA, one in Indiana. Can I put both IP numbers in there enclosed
in []? If so, what's the separator? Comma, semicolon, or space?

Also would this work in a fail over situation?

If this, can't be done.. How can I create something that would do this?

Thanks in advance.

Create multiple SMTP connectors (on the same machine) and give them the
same cost and same address space.

Q257426 says you use a semicolon between the hostnames, and yes, you
enclose IP addresses in square brackets.

Ex2k SMTP Smart Hosts and Multiple Servers

2002-01-25 Thread Paul Christopher

Hi,

2 servers not transferring internal mail, same domain, messages stick in
SMTP (Remote Delivery) queue for other.

I have 2 Ex2k SP2 servers in the same Administrative group . Both are
configured to use an external (to Domain) smart host. Both servers can
send and receive external mail ok.

Networking is a bit odd and may be causing the problem, identical boxes;

3 x Intel 100Mbit aggregated on routable IP.
1 x Intel 1Gbit non-routable IP direct cable connection.

Each server sees the other on the non-routable IP and shares, DFS, etc
work ok.

DNS server records both IP addresses for each.

Any ideas?

Paul Christopher

Did they ever work. Sounds like when installed they set up as separate email

Um, thanks Tony.

Yes this has worked, intermittently.

The servers are in the same AG, can be monitored/managed centrally,
mailboxes can be moved, etc.

I'm thinking I need special connectors or a virtual SMTP.

Re: Multiple Smart Hosts

2001-08-29 Thread coopere

Never mind. I found the answer nested in a KB article. Here it is if you're
interested.
--
RESOLUTION
Instead of creating two SMTP connectors with the same address space and bridgehead
(but different smart host), try creating a single connector with multiple smart hosts.
You can do this by either of two ways. You can use Domain Name System (DNS) in a
round-robin configuration. Or, you can enter the smart hosts' names separated by
commas in the Forward all mail through this connector to the following smart hosts
option on the General tab of the SMTP Connector Properties page. You can use the
NetBIOS name, a fully-qualified domain name (FQDN), IP address, or any combination
thereof. Some examples include:

Example A: By NetBIOS Name
server1,server2,server3
Example B: By FQDN
host1.domain.com,host2.domain,com,host3.domain.com
Example C: By IP Address
[192.168.0.1],[192.168.0.2],[192.168.0.3]
When sending to smart hosts separated with commas, if those smart hosts are
represented by IP addresses contained in square brackets (which is done to bypass name
resolution), as in Example C, instead of the DNS name, you may experience problems if
you are running an Exchange 2000 Server version that is earlier than Exchange 2000
Server Service Pack 1 (SP1) with the round robin load balancing. Instead, what will
happen is that the connector will only use the first server in the list. To work
around that issue you can enter the smart host in the round robin by either host name
or by FQDN.

In Exchange 2000 can you list multiple (ie, redundant) smart hosts on a
single connector similar to Exchange 5.5? If so, what's the seperator?
 (comma, semi-colon?) Thanks.
