[expert] mount/umount problems

2002-04-27 Thread David

Somehow, someway, I jacked-up my partition table. What happened wasIn DrakConf ->
Diskdrake I deleted and re-created my swap partition.

Now, swap does not work. Swap turns on as an incorrect partition. *And*,
fstab/mtab/df-ahT/diskdrake do not agree. The output from df-ahT and fstab and mtab
are below.

/opt seems to not be in my path now, but I can access the files that are there.

I also cannot access any files on /mnt/windows either. And root cannot umount it.

so i still need to have harddrive pluged into the
motherboard for booting puposes?

If so i have an old HD could i put the /boot dir on it
and then have my 40 GB for /, /home, /usr and then the
60 GB with swap and /ntwk (files for network) and
every thing would work fine.

will the card work without any extra configuring or do
i have to do something?

Thanks

Yes. I am using a Promise PCI card with no problems. It's all the
same to Mandrake - there is now IDE2 and IDE3 (hde to hdh) as well as
IDE0 and IDE1 (hda to hdd). That's all there is to it. You will need
to retain your existing slower hda drive for booting.

Just installed it and it works great! You'll need three sets of libraries:

ld.so1-1.9.11-9mdk.i586.rpm
libc-base-5.3.12-37mdk.i586.rpm
libc-extras-5.3.12-37mdk.i586.rpm

All can be found in the contrib directory of a cooker mirror:

Here is the gist from a message from Giuseppe:

To use libc5 based applications such as Word Perfect 8,
you should install these packages:

ld.so1-1.9.11-6mdk.i586.rpm
libc-base-5.3.12-36mdk.i586.rpm

and if needed:

libc-extras-5.3.12-36mdk.i586.rpm

This should also work for Mathematica 4.1.2, old Matlab 5.3, etc.

Other stuff -

The official Corel Linux web site is at http://linux.corel.com/

The download of WP8 PE was at CNET, but is there no longer. It's not found on
Corel's site either
(http://linux.corel.com/products/linuxproducts_wp8_downloadlinks.htm does not
work). I did find a link at
ftp://ftp.matrix.com.br/pub/.3/linuxberg/files/x11/office/WordPerfect.tar.gz
and http://hk.linuxberg.com/files/x11/office/WordPerfect.tar.gz and
http://ftp.sci.univr.it/software/linux/Corel/WordPerfect.tar.gz
but the servers timed out. Perhaps it's still on some ftp server somewhere?

But, the WP8 registration site it is still working and is located at:

http://venus.corel.com/nasapps/wp8linuxreg/register.html

Oops -- there's a bug in WP8!

There is a bug in the Filtix filters that Corel licensed to allow importation
of MS-Word documents. On Sep 9, 2001, the bug kicked in and put filtrix into
demo mode. Corel, of course, has never fixed this. Some nice people on the
Net did, though, by creating a wrapper for filtrix that lies to it about the
current date/time. Read about it here:
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=5655
and at:
http://olivier.pk.wau.nl/~valentyn/wp8fix/

The WordPerfect Mini-howto is at:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/WordPerfect.html
The focus is on WP7, but it may be helpful.

Hope this helps.

The optional Ranish PM is a late addition to xosl and may not yet be
documented.
Ranish is executed by hitting ^P from a running xosl, so you must
install xosl.

No, just uninstall (an option of install) xosl if you don't want it.
Ranish will disappear as well. Ranish is downloadable by itself from
the Ranish web site:
http://www.ranish.com/part/ Do a google search on Ranish for lots of
information and download opportunities.

> Am I right in assuming once I correct the boot sector/partition table I will

No. Everthing whose partition has not been corrected by Ranish should
still run.

Fear not! Just play around with it without making stupid decisions
and you will quickly appreciate its great value.

Has anyone got the free download version of WordPerfect to work
with Mandrake 8.2? I have just upgraded my machine, and WP broke.
The same thing happened when I upgraded to Mdk 8.1, but the error
looks different this time to what I think it was then.

I get:

...path.../xwp: file not found

(or words to that effect). The actual executable "xwp" does
exist where it always did, and is executable.

Any hints would be appreciated.

I might point out here that I came across a set of benchmarks that
compared IDE performance across the standard IDE ports and the HPT37X
controller IDE ports. The HPT37X ports performed better than standard
IDE under those benches; logically therefore you are better off to do
soft RAID on the HPT37X. This somewhat justifies your investment; I for
one have kept on buying the Abit VIA K-series boards. As I've said
before elsewhere, this is also valuable from the viewpoint that you will
have two extra standard IDE controllers to play with. Handy for doing
data transfers from other drives, and for using them for ATAPI-CD burner
connections.

BTW, there was a poster here recently that actually had RAID working
hardware native using the HPT37X drivers shipped in LM82.

I believe it was Gregorio Pérez Aguilera. And he too was using an Abit
KT7A-Raid. He posted his message on April 16th at 2:02PM here on the

[expert] fsck on root file system at boot time in MDK8.2

Dear All:
I have installed recently MDK8.2 using the ext3
andReiserfFS ournaling filesystems.
If the system is powered off uncleanly the a fsck
is always performed on the root filesystem, which seems to behave as no having
journal but not on the other ext3 filesystems which are cleanly
recovered.
I have another Machine with MDK8.0 and ReiserFS and
no fsck is performed at boot even is the power is switched off.

How can I solve this problem

I went and looked at the XOSL online manual ... it was mainly concerned with
its primary function as boot loader and didn't mention its partition tool
that I could see. I guess when I install it I will just get to its
partition tool and I'll be able to figure it out from there

Will I have to go on and use its boot loader once I straighten up the
partition table? (I'm guessing I can just cancel out / reboot and go back

Am I right in assuming once I correct the boot sector/partition table I will
have to reformat and reload the existing primary partition windows 98?

Thanks for your advice.

[expert] asus 8200 geforce 3

2002-04-27 Thread Michael Holt

Hello all,
I just put together a dual cpu athlon system (wow!); I decided to
grab the geforce card to top it off and see if I could get my quake 3
frame rates up a little higher. Installing Mandrake 8.2 went great and
the world seemed like such a great place... until I tried runnig quake -
oh crap - no openGL support with XFree 4 on my new card and only
experimental support on 3.3.6. I tried installing the nvidia drivers from
their website but still no go. My obvious question is; anybody in my
boat? Did you figure out how to fix it?

Thanks in advance! Mike

dOh! Maybe I should use gmc to draw the background instead of
nautilus... I wonder if that would help. I would use something like
Enlightenment or fluxbox, but IIRC they don't play too nice with
dual-head systems.. (I've got two network cards and two monitors
attached to my workstation... a 19" and a 15" LCD and I don't want
windows (ie. galeon) to span both monitors, but when I maximize them,
want them to maximize to the monitor they are on). Currently, I can
only seem to do this with gnome and kde... and kde is just... ugh.
Not using that. =)

I'll give supermount a try... it frustrates the heck out of me, but
I'll give it another shot because this nautilus thing is *really* annoying...

I do not have the dl version but I have installed and use WP8 from their retail CD.

To do either with 8.2 you need to install ld.so1-1.9.11-9mdk.
This is not on your CDs but you can dl it from the 8.2 contrib directory or the Cooker
contrib directory.

But with the error you are receiving you may also have another problem.

Have you double checked the path for xwp and verified that it is in fact
/usr/local/wordperfect/wpbin/xwp?

Using a file mgr go to that directory and either by double click or command try
launching Using the file mgr (not a terminal or shortcut), unless you have already
installed ld.so1, you should get a segfault error.
If you still get a path error then the problem is your WP installation
and your best bet would be to run the uninstall script and after installing ld.so1
reinstall WP8.

I had a search through the newbie archives, but couldn't find it.
Can you remember anything that might give me a hint of where to
start?

Not much help, I'm afraid:

root> ldd -v /usr/local/wordperfect/wpbin/xwp
/usr/bin/ldd: /usr/local/wordperfect/wpbin/xwp: No such file or directory

(or with any other switch on "ldd" - the same result)

I can't tell you how to unfoul your partitions but I can give you a copy
of PM that I currently own. If that will help that is.

I have an ftp connection I use *simple DSL* which you're welcome to use
to get the files.

Partition Magic probably will not help, but it includes PARTED.EXE a
partition table editor (but be super careful!). Unfortunately PARTED
is old and does not support access to cylinders above 1024.PM also
includes PARTINFO.EXE which will give you a report on what is
wrong. This supports > 1024.

But best is to download XOSL from http://www.xosl.org, put it on a
floppy, and install it. It is free. When it is running, ^P will
bring up the Ranish Partition Manager which will show you exactly what
is illegal (marked in red) about your partition table(s), and lead you
through the repair process. Very simple.
