Oops, to avoid it start it using 640x480 FB mode, and edit your /etc/lilo.conf

by vga=791 (for 1024x768x16) or vga=788 (for 800x600x16).

Re: [expert] Xfree 4.0.1, 3D acceleration and the Matrox G400...

 Hi,

Hi,

I've just installed Mandrake 7.2 and was hoping to see Xfree 4.0.1
support the G400 in 3D out of the box... However, my hopes were too
high. Has anyone been able to make this card work in accelerated 3D with
Mdk 7.2 and Xfree 4.01? If so, I'd be very curious to know how (a small
 walkthrough would be very appreciated!)

We have got problem to have XF 4.0.1 working well with the Matrox card, so we
are using only XF 3.3.6, use XFdrake --expert for that.

François.

Re: [expert] /usr/bin/gs

 Hi

 Sorry for the silly question:

which package contains /usr/bin/gs on Mandrake 7.2 ?

ghostscript (but by %post).

Looking at the packages from 7.2 and 7.1 I see thaat the ghostscript-5.50
package only includes /usr/bin/gs-common . Yet scripts like pdf2ps fail
because they can't find "gs". I added a link from $HOME/bin/gs to
 /usr/bin/gs-common for the moment.

My system had an older version of ghostscript (5.10. I'm not sure whether
it was from 7.0 or even older). I upgraded the packages today and got no
error message. Yet no /usr/bin/gs .

The code that managed the correct update from older version has been removed
(?), update it twice to get it correctly (with --force).

Re: [expert] NVIDIA question

*This message was transferred with a trial version of CommuniGate(tm) Pro*
I installed Mandrake 7.2 using the expert option on my system and I have
a question on how instillation is done.
The first time I installed 7.2 was with Xfree 4.0.1 and I have a Viper
550 TNT AGP card installed on my system. None of the 3D games that came
with 7.2 would work. I tried to install the nvidia drivers for my card
using rpm, srpm, and with tar files, but nothing worked. I reinstalled
7.2 using the expert option and when I got to the Xfree option I took a
minute to read all the information on the screen. It stated that 3D
acceleration was only available with Xfree 3.3
I installed with Xfree 3.3 with 3D acceleration and every thing worked.
How do I get 3D acceleration to work with Xfree 4.0.1

Beware this 3D acceleration support is experimental and is based upon previous
version of nvidia drivers for RIVA128 and bug fixed by Utah GLX team. this
version does not include any AGP acceleration, and really works almost correctly
on RIVA128 card, but newer card may have problems with some games.

François.

 Hi,..

I need some advice in configuring my X windows setup for full performance
as i dont think i am getting the best speed possible at this moment.

I have a Matrox G400 with 32mb of memory, at the moment i run the svga
 server
in 1600x1200x24, and when i try to play games or mesa/opengl demos they seem
 slower then i would expect.

Use 16 bits instead, if problem persist try with mdk kernel instead, and check
with it.

When I get to the point to install X, it asks this question

Your card can have 3d support but on with XFree 3.3.6
Your card is supported by XFree 4.0.1 which may have better
 support in 2d

 then I get 2 buttons
"XFree 3.3.6 with 3d hardware acceleration" and "XFree 3.3.6"

is this second button a typo or do I not get the option to choose
 XFree 4.0.1?

This is like a typo, you may have a RIVA128 card ?

To take into account removable devices during install, can you send me
the output of the following :
dmesg
and the contents of these files :
/proc/scsi/scsi
/proc/ide/*/model
/proc/ide/*/media

when a disk is present in the removable device if possible.

Thanks in advance, François PONS.
