Re: [expert] Monitor refresh rates
Configure X from the console. As root XFdrake Does it asks for a refresh? I don't remember so, in fact having the proper refresh rate has always been a difficult task for me (I always had to manually edit the X config file). For some reason, instead of returning 'not found' and prompt it gave me a blank screen with a mouse cursor block, and no way out of it. Anyway, I did find it in the end, and all is now well. Re: [expert] Monitor refresh rates
Hi Anne, first thing to do - is to not boot into X... So - The Failsafe Option is a first part. Just - at the Lilo prompt - give: init 3 in - it should start the system without X. The Problem - is that you most probably need to start with an empty XF86Config-4 file - as the XFDrake programm takes the old one as template (It assumes - what you have in there works already ...) So - move that file to your Home-Directory, make sure there is no mode XF86Config-4 in /etc/X11, and start XFDrake again. It should do the trick. Cheers PS: Now lets get back to this *^%$% of Compile to have the CLE266 Via Driver compiled into XFree to have the Hush-PC working with a decent X-Display driver ... Hi, Joerg, It eventually dawned on me that I didn't even want to use the failsafe from the lilo splash. I hit esc, typed linux 3 and got a text login. Logged in as root and ran XFdrake. It started from the position of the old monitor, but since it was a text only version of XFdrake that didn't matter. I navigated around until I found a suitable entry, and voila! However, in case I forget what to do, I've printed out your instructions and will file them - my memory takes a lot of jogging these days g Thanks for the help Anne Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I was surprised to see that my Viewsonic A110 monitor wasn't listed in the common settings. I thought it was a very common monitor. ?? Even Redmon linux has it. ?? I had this same problem You had a couple of years ago. It was pretty common to have a monitor that didn't have preset info in it. You should be able to go to your manual and get the info you need, or their web site. Then you can do a custom setup and just plug in the info rather than going into your config file if you like. At least you used to be able to do that. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Thu, 4 Apr 2002, Steve wrote: Can someone please help me with setting up my monitor refresh rates? Re: [expert] monitor refresh rates
That's the beauty of Linux. People who make distributions are free to target specific audiences. Mandrake started out targeting 586+ processors, and the peripherals one would reasonably expect for that class of machine. Red Hat typically targets cutting-edge folks who want the latest and greatest, even if it means some instability. Caldera started out being the stable Linux back in kernel 0.99 days. Now they seem to be corporate whores. There was a Mormon on the Caldera list named Joseph, in Orem, Utah (can't dredge up his last name to save my life) in the early days who has his own distribution now, and it's rating pretty favorably in the ease of use and customization categories. I guess my point is, if you have hardware that's not supported by one distribution, research others, looking for a better fit. But don't expect Mandrake to fill your every need...it's literally resource impossible. And if you can't find a decent fit, rob some other distributions, make the one you need and give it away. Everything changes all the time. Mike Lorne Shantz wrote: I was surprised to see that my Viewsonic A110 monitor wasn't listed in the common settings. I thought it was a very common monitor. ??
