Here's a followup, for Curtis and Willytex, of Bo playing later in life. I
looked up his age, and it turns out that he was probably in his 70s when I saw
him perform in New Mexico, although he claimed onstage to be in his 80s. Still,
he never stopped rockin'...

When I lived in Santa Fe,  I used to see Bo Diddley all the time. He lived in a
suburb of nearby Albuquerque, where he had once actually been Honorary Sheriff
(Bo Diddley's A Gunslinger) and would play gigs at local clubs and casinos from
time to time. He was in his 80s, and still put on one of the best stage shows
I've ever seen. He was a FIERCE guitarist, still able to play up a storm, and
in pretty much any style you can imagine.

One of the best things about watching Bo perform was him interacting with each
new
band. That's right...he didn't have a band. What he'd do when someone hired
him for a gig is call around that town and find out the name of the best young
garage band in town. Then he'd call them up and say, Hey, it's Bo Diddley. No,
really. I've got a gig in your town on Saturday. Want to be my backup band?

He'd meet with them before the gig, expecting them to have learned his songs,
and they'd jam for an hour or two just to make sure it was a good fit, and then
they'd go onstage together. It was magic. You could tell that these kids were
having the time of their lives playing behind one of the true legends of rock
'n roll, and you could tell that Bo was having fun, too.

Onstage he was funny, he was charming, and for an 80+ year-old-man he was
damned sexy, too. A true legend, and to the end.

Excellent post.

I just started studying him seriously this year when I was getting into
Afro-carribian rhythms. I got his Chess recordings box set and dug in. Rhythm
king.

Now I include one of his songs in my sets and just lean on the rhythm using the
guitar as a percussion instrument. Every verse is more hypnotic it is so much
fun to sing.

Who Do You Love

I walk 47 miles of barbed wire,
I use a cobra-snake for a necktie,
I got a brand new house on the roadside,
Made from rattlesnake hide,
I got a brand new chimney made
 on top,
Made out of a human skull,
Now come on take a walk with me, arlene,
And tell me, who do you love?

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Tombstone hand and a graveyard mine,
Just 22 and I don't mind dying.

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

I rode around the town, use a
 rattlesnake whip,
Take it easy arlene, don't give me no lip,

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Night was dark, but the sky was blue,
Down the alley, the ice-wagon flew,
Heard a bump, and somebody screamed,
You should have heard just what I seen.

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Arlene took me by my hand,
And she said oh bo, you know I understand.

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Ooops. Looks like I pushed a few more of Barry's buttons.
It makes him absolutely crazy that I'm actually a fairly nice-looking dame
rather than the hideous hag of his nightmares.

Sure you are, Judy...in the same alternate universe in which TMSP
practitioners are soaring through the air with the greatest of ease and you're
actually as smart as you believe you are.  :-)  :-)  :-)

But the person you should be complaining to is Edg, who wrote the line below
that you don't seem to like, based on the two photographs you posted of
yourself. I thought he captured the essence of both of them quite nicely.

If you really feel the need to convince us of how nice-looking you are, I'd
suggest finding a friend to take a real photo of you next time, instead of
taking a webcam selfie.

Oh. But that presupposes you actually have a friend. Never mind.  :-)  :-)  :-)

In many cases what people say about your face is more devastating
than turning it into a caricature. We see political cartoons all the
time so it's really nothing new. But, when people post in plain text
some comments it can really get to you. It's like, so personal. Hey,
we could start a thread about this! Go figure.

I think that thread was started long ago, with the words, The censorious
editor could most definitely be judged a Tulku of Carry

to the prominent sagging jowls on a sallow face completely devoid of
humor and warmhearted compassion.  :-)

[FairfieldLife] Sweatshirt weather in Leiden and no work to do

2014-04-25 Thread TurquoiseBee
Oh woe. I was wrong about the First Noble Truth and life really *is* suffering.

Not. I plan to spend much of my Day Off today lounging in canal-side cafes such
as this one, officially Fucking Off.

It's not that I mind work. It's actually pretty fascinating work, rendering
scientific research into English, so I get to learn a lot of fascinating shit.
It's like I'm being paid to become Cliff Clavin, and fill my mind with useless
but fascinating trivia. But I've gotten pretty fast at it, so I often (like
this week) manage to churn out my weekly quota of articles in four days, and
wind up being able to take the whole weekend off.

Now that the weather is better, this is officially a Good Thing. Relatively
speaking, of course. For me it's a Good Thing because I'll get to sit in more
cafes like this one and write more Friday Turq Raps. For others, it may not be
such a Good Thing because they have to click past more Friday Turq Raps.

Now, what to rap about?

How about this cafe? It's on one of the main canals of Leiden, near the town
hall and where the open market happens Wednesdays and Saturdays. Today it's
less crowded, of course, and I'm sitting at an outside table at a place called
Vooraf en Toe. Don't ask me what it means...probably Kick me in the af with
your toe in Dutch...but it's the Artists' Cafe here in Leiden. It's where most
of the producing artists and musicians who live here hang out. As you might
imagine, it's one of my favorite hangoouts. It's the Leiden counterpart of
Downtown Subscription in Santa Fe, where I whiled away many a happy hour.

Artists are a cool group to hang with. At least in Santa Fe and here in Leiden.
If they've decided to live in either place rather than New York or London or
Paris, they're usually Cool Artists, meaning that they've gotten past most of
the ego games that proliferate in the art world. Paris was bloody insufferable
in terms of ego. You felt like you had to take a shower after returning from an
art opening. But here...different story, and different crowd. I've been to
openings of some of the artists sitting around me, and some of their work is
quite good. Some of it. But all of the artists I've met themselves, whatever I
may think of their work, have been pretty cool froods. Even the ones who are
internationally famous and thus might feel entitled to push out a lot of ego
manage to avoid doing so. Go figure. I tend to go here when I've had my fill of
FFL. :-)

There is a certain joy -- at least for me -- in finding a group of sympatico
people who don't feel the need to push out their egos. That was what made Santa
Fe so special. And in Sauve, in the south of France. You'd meet megafamous
people there, and if you didn't know beforehand that they were famous, nothing
they'd ever say or do would lead you to suspect that they were. I had a female
drinking and conversation buddy in my fave bar in Santa Fe for three years
before I ever learned that she was an heiress and an artist worth zillions of
dollars. And even then, someone else had to tell me. It had just never come up
in conversation, so it had never come up.

Artists and performers who are like that when you meet them are rare, but that
makes them even more refreshing when you run into them. I hear Bonnie Raitt is
like that. I know that Bruce Cockburn is like that, although he becomes shy
when he figures out you've recognized him. Gene Hackman was like that in Santa
Fe, and so was Robert Redford when I ran into him once by accident, which one
might expect less.

Compare and contrast to other celebs, like Val Kilmer. Val lived in Santa Fe,
too, and the best contrast I can provide to the other named celebs is to tell a
story. I was having a drink at the bar of a favorite hangout and I noticed the
waitresses drawing straws from a cocktail glass, obviously to settle a matter
of dispute. I asked them what was up. One of them said, Oh, we've just heard
that Val is coming in tonight for dinner. I said, Oh, so you're drawing
straws to see who gets to wait on him? She replied, No, we're drawing straws
to see who HAS to wait on him. 'Nuff said about Val, but he really does
provide the perfect contrast to those who *don't* push out their egos.

Anyway, this has nothing to do with Fairfield Life, where as we know no one has
an ego any more, after their respective decades of spiritual practice. And
certainly no one pushes out an image of themselves that they are clearly
attached to. So I guess you can file this particular Friday Turq Rap in the box
labeled, Non-Sequitur and Irrelevant.

My bad. I'll try to do better in subsequent raps this weekend.

[FairfieldLife] Old Ships of Zion

2014-04-25 Thread dhamiltony2k5
The old Unity movement and their Unity Village in Kansas City as has been a
case also with the Transcendental Meditation movement and Fairfield, Iowa
evidently were great introductions to spiritual transcendentalism and a unity
in the transcendental state by experience of what practical spirituality in
life comes of the Unified Field. The Unity movement at its time evidently was
that as an introduction at its time like with TM coming along more recently has
been. Both Unity and TM providing an experiential critique of materialism in
their time.

It is interesting how transcending can be taught to and has been taught to in
different times. I was harmony singing over the lunch hour yesterday with some
other conservative Fairfield meditators here and we sang this old hymn that
came from the Shaker spiritual movement where the text is rejoicing in the
efficacy of their movement then when they were teaching transcendence as
spiritual practice in their system at that time.

It seems every generation or two, probably all through human time someone
comes and re-expresses the ultimate teaching of transcendence as spirituality
in life that way. Like the Unity movement in its time or TM in our time.

Sometimes the teaching stays individuated like with Emerson and sometimes it
propagates in groups or even in to popular movement. It is all the same based
on experience of the absolute. This expression and re-expression in
self-referral transcendental spiritual experience of the Unified Field becomes
the real story of the progression of all our manifest destiny in American
history. Cultivating the transcendence in human experience meditating evidently
is very American. Cultivation of the transcendent state is ultimate
spirituality and teaching it is revolutionary action in the face of
materialism. Subverting people's experience of the transcendent is nothing less
than counter-revolutionary, anti-scientific and anti-American spiritual
ignorance,

Transcendental Meditation program and the TM-Sidhi program together as a group,
for the sake of bringing coherence to national and world consciousness based on
balancing labor and leisure to meditate while working together for the benefit
of the community. Our Super-Radiance meditating community includes families of
all the TM-Meditators and TM-Sidhas in the Fairfield, Vedic City and Jefferson

But I recall when Jerry Garcia died. feeling a deep loss, and also a renewed

Sure you are, Judy...in the same alternate universe in which TMSP practitioners

Oh. But that presupposes you actually have a friend. Never mind. :-) :-) :-)

In many cases what people say about your face is more devastating than turning

now that the TM org is ossifying its 'canon', it is no longer free of such

MJ may be interested in this about Otis Spann:

In late 1954, he teamed up with harmonica player Billy Boy Arnold, drummer
Clifton James, and bass player Roosevelt Jackson, and recorded demos of
I'm A Man and Bo Diddley. They re-recorded the songs at Chess Studios
with a backing ensemble comprising Otis Spann (piano), Lester Davenport
(harmonica), Frank Kirkland (drums), and Jerome Green (maracas). The record
was released in March 1955, and the A-side, Bo Diddley, became a number

So I guess you can file this particular Friday Turq Rap in the box
labeled,

[FairfieldLife] Facts about President Grant

2014-04-25 Thread jr_esq
He may not be the most admired president in US history, but he was a gifted
writer. He also became destitute after serving as president of this country.
I would guess ex-presidents, at the time, didn't have a pension for their
services as the top executive.

He also wanted to annex the Dominican Republic as part of the Union. But the
senate disapproved of the idea. I wonder what would happen if some countries
in Latin America would want to join the US now. A new state and new tax payers
could help pay for the mounting national debt of this country.

I highly doubt that Latin American countries would be dumb enough to
become part of the losing highly in debt United States. Besides they
get a lot of US expatriates moving to their countries and spending their
retirement money there. I hear Panama is good for that.

You never know what could happen. A lot of the Latin American countries have
problems with insurgents and rebels. They may want the American military to
bring peace and order in their country.

Also, Costa Rica has a good reputation for stability. Hence, a good place for
Americans to retire. As of now, I still want to visit Peru to see Machu
Picchu. So far, I haven't heard anything negative about any tourists visiting
over there.

[FairfieldLife] Creationists thwart mammoth bid!

2014-04-25 Thread salyavin808

Bizarre story. It's hard to believe people still actually believe that the
Earth is only 6,000 years old. That's a lot of cognitive dissonance you'd have
to be coping with these days. Probably why these maniacs have their own
natural history museum with humans and dinosaurs cavorting happily together..

Each to their own POV but it's easier to disprove Biblical creation than it is
the tooth fairy. Everyone knows there are trees demonstrably older than 6,000
years. And if the Ark landed in Turkey, why can't you find kangaroos outside of
Australia?

I say they should have to prove the Earth is only as old as the Bible says or
put up with the new state fossil. You can't go around controlling what everyone
sees by banning anything you disapprove of because your religion tells you
otherwise! Can you?

Nabs,

I don't believe that Ellen being a TMer is the reason why Portia got pregnant.
Or, is there a new siddhi technique that we don't know of?

[FairfieldLife] Re: Creationists thwart mammoth bid!

2014-04-25 Thread steve.sundur
There really needs to be a work around for this issue for those religious
minded in this regard. Cognitive dissonance is a bit of an understatement I
think.

I have some customers who belong to strict denominations but are mainstream in
most other ways. Boy, do I steer the topic of conversation away from this
issue, should it ever veer in that direction.

I was invited to a country wedding of such a customer/friend recently. We had
a great time. The groom had his gun tucked in his belt behind his back, and
the pastor officiating made it a strong point that the earth was only 6000
years old. She of course was about five months pregnant. It was the second
marriage for both. (maybe her third)

The dinner served was the crispy chicken that you usually get at gas stations.

This guy is a true country boy and we've been friends for a long time. And,
the dude is smart.

You can't go around controlling what everyone
sees by banning anything you disapprove of because your religion tells you
otherwise! Can you?
