--- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, Sal Sunshine [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This is an urban legend, that a lot of people use to put down Catholics, arguing that there is more poverty in Catholic vs Protestant countries because all the smart ones became priests in the Middle Ages. There is no scientific research whatsoever to support that, and I find it very mean-sprited. Only a very small number **ever** went into the priesthood, and many of those had kids on the side anyway. Very few were actually drawn by a desire to help others,--more like a means to survive, or, in wealthier families, oftentimes the younger kids would be forced in in order to keep the family fortune intact. I was merely talking about celibacy as gene suicide, not the Catholics or anyone else per se. Not all monks or members of a celibate priesthood are in it for completely noble reasons, but consider the ones who are. They have effectively removed the genes that led to that rare caring about others from the overall gene pool. I just think it's weird, that's all... Yes, if one traces one's genealogical lines back into Plantagenet royalty and the like (which is far, far more common in the USA than most people suspect), one finds a great many other-wordly or other- dimensional fairy-tale genealogical strands -- the magical line of the Merovingians, Melusine, the various gods, and so on. And FWIW in the past 20 years or so, careful genealogists (like Chretien Settipani) have established proven lineages from the Plantagenets and Charlemagne going all the way back to the pharaohs of Middle-Kingdom Egypt -- a land abundant with god-kings and -queens and similar other-dimensional fairy-tales.
