I was in the audience when Maharishi described how he came up with the mantras. (He may have given this explanation on other occasions...dunno.) It wasn't from Guru Devthe technique might have been from Guru Dev, but the mantras were picked by Maharishi as he sat on his bed in a hotel room...if I remember correctly. There was never a moment when Guru Dev pulled Maharishi aside and gave birth to the technique as far as I can tellmerely from Guru Dev's talks did Maharishi get the concepts we're being told comes from 5,000 years of tradition. But, nope, don't think so anymore. Can anyone add more to my dim memories of this?

Re: [FairfieldLife] Re: Rapid City, ND sees earliest snowfall since 1888.
The mantras have been around for ages. They are listed in John Woodroffe's The Garland of Letters for example (published before Maharishi was born). They are commonly used in Jyotish, Ayurveda as well as many other Indian traditions. Of course westerners back then wouldn't know this but there's been quite an explosion of knowledge since so it wouldn't be so easy to pull off as original or from some lost tradition. This is the problem for many TM people whose training as been VERY LIMITED in scope. There is no Parampara in the TM program, MMY *wasn't* a Guru! Thanks Duveyoung! Parampara (Sanskrit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit: परम्परा, paramparā) denotes a succession of teachers and disciples in traditional Vedic culture and Indian religions http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_religions such as Hinduism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinduism, Sikhism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikhism, Jainism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jainism and Buddhism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism.
