Joining ArtTeam

2009-04-22 Thread Israel Rodríguez
Hello,

I was talking with Máirín Duffy about join Fedora Artwork Team and she
said me that I could start with
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/DesignService

I'm a Spanish Linux user who started with Fedora 7 and now I'm using
Fedora 10. I'm 17 years old but I'm involved with Linux user community.
Last year I founded a network of blogs which talk about Fedora: FBN
(http://fbn.homelinux.org and our planet:
http://fbn.homelinux.org/planet). Now we're writing a Fedora 10/11 user
guide in Spanish (on PDF).

I think I will start with any request of
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/DesignService (probably, the
Aleyoop icon)

Regards

Israel R. Alonso

OK, I contacted with the requester and he liked this. About your
observation:
- Yes, are available, then I link it.
- ok
- Yes I used the same photo, then I write it credits (the requester ask
me if I can do some variations with the lions, to use this in next
releases, and I will do it.
- If Art team want it, I delete the gradients (or I make them smoother)

ok?

Link here is useful so we can give some feedback, but is important also
to have an answer from the requester. Wait for a while and if he do not
follow you proposal, you can try to contact him directly.

Now as my personal opinion about your graphics, overall I like them but
 I have a few observation:
 - are there sources available?
 - the text is a bit thicker. the ideal size is not trivial to get, but
not that hard either: use a normal (not bold) version of MgOpen-Modata
 and add a stroke;
 - you used the lion from the release counter banner: that lion is in
turn based on a photo with a CC-BY license, you have to follow the
 license and credit the photographer;
 - I see you modified a bit the colors for the 4 bubbles and replaced
them with gradients, not sure if we want to go with this slight
variation, but yours definitely is more shiny

Thanks for the work! I have some feedback for you, I hope it's helpful:

 - The general layout is great, simple and clean, and you've positioned the
elements very well in relationship to each other. These flags will definitely
 make an impact!
 - Where are your sources? We need the sources to be posted to the wiki so
others can participate. (If there were sources posted I could have quickly
mocked up some ideas for improvement to give to you)
Sources (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:4f-flag-source.svg) are now
posted on the wiki
(https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/DesignService#4foundations_Flags_for_events)
 - The gradients and drop shadows don't really match a lot of our artwork so I
would recommend pulling them out. It also looks like the colors of the four
icons have been modified. I would stick with the original colors in the file
you got them from - I think either Ian Weller or Clint Savage put together a
list of color standards for these so you might want to check with them to
make sure you're using the right color ocdes.
OK, there are a variation with original colors on source file ;)
 - You're using MG Open Modata, which is perfect, but you're using the bold
variant. We typically only use the regular version of this font (the bold
version is kind of goofy-looking.) Can you try with the regular version?
OK
 - The black of the lion seems a little less than ideal compared bright /
tropical almost coloring of the four foundations artwork. Can you try a
variant with a white lion? It might make the flag brighter and go together a
 bit better.
OK, a white lion will look great!
 - These kinds of banners are quite expensive to print, you may want to
consider a design that is not F11 specific so that they can be reused (more
 ecological too!)
:) They are a lot of possibilities about this, I designed a variation,
but isn't finished yet (it's included on source)

Please, make corrections on source to show your ideas

Thanks again for your work, it is great!
:O Thanks ;)

You might want to consider making the lion less present. Maybe
lower the opacity, or alter the color levels to make the lion
interfere less with desktop icons on top of it. Sorry if I'm not
using the right terminology, I leave the implementation details to the
 true artists! :-)
XD In my opinion, a more transparent lion (and perhaps smaller)
may be more comfortable to final user

Hi Paul,

Is the only difference between the small Wacom Bamboo and the small
Bamboo Fun (both about 6 x 4) the extra proprietary software packages
 that come with the Fun?

Yes, software is the only difference (ArtRage, is entertaining, but not
proffesional and Photoshop Elements is only a propietary software you
can get using the GIMP and f-spot togheter). If you will use it as a
replace of mouse, I recomend you the small bamboo. But if you will use
it for design, Bamboo Fun (medium) will be better (but it's only a size
issue) if you want to be more confortable drawing.

Just my opinion, more questions? :)

configuring wacom tablet with LinuxWacom

2009-04-24 Thread Israel Rodríguez Alonso
Hello Team,

Sorry if this should not have written here but I thought that is the art
team and perhaps someone has a tablet.

Máirín Duffy gives me this link to make my tablet (Wacom Bamboo FUN A5Wide)
on Fedora (http://linuxwacom.sourceforge.net/). I did this:

cd linuxwacom(...)/prebuilt
./install

and it started to install:

Installing Wacom man page..
Installed under /usr/share/man/man4

Installing wacom_drv
wacom_drv.so installed under /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input

Installing utility programs (wacdump, xidump, xsetwacom)
Installed under /usr/local/bin

Installing wacomcpl..
Installed under /usr/local/bin

You need to compile and install wacom.(k)o manually if your kernel is out of
date.

After adding your Wacom tools into /etc/X11/xorg.conf, please restart X
server or simply reboot your system to run the new Wacom X driver.

---
Then I added this lines (
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=212355) to xorg.conf (created
with Xorg -configure :1).

I rebooted and... tablet doesn't works! XD (it appears on Extended Devices
window on Inkscape and GIMP)

Have you got any idea?

(sorry, again,if this does not look anything here)

A previous thread reminded me to bring this up.

I want to buy a drawing tablet, preferably something very well
supported in Fedora and using USB. I'm assuming Wacom is the way to
go, but I'm not sure which model to get, and I'm open minded as long
as I know it's solid and works well with Fedora. I don't want to
spend a fortune, but it's OK if something goes into low three-digits
(USD $), let's say US $250 or less. What does the Artwork team
  recommend?

I've always had luck with the Wacom graphire series. They're quite
affordable, while I bought mine quite some time ago I believe it was $120.
For years now they just work out-of-the-box, and if you want
pressure-sensitivity, it's just a little more configuration (you need to add
Xorg.conf back to F10 which actually causes some painful issues (kernel
panic on shutdown, fun things like that) ) but it's liveable. I heard that a
fix for this went into F11.

Hi Máirín,

O.O Here Graphire series is more expensive than in USA!! :D ( importation
issues maybe?XD)

Re: Different Wacom question

 Hi Israel!

Well a big factor in the price is size too.

My graphire is 4 x 5. It looks like you can get a refurb 4x5 graphire
for $60 on Amazon [1] and you can get one new for $100 from Wacom direct
 [2].

It may be a combination of the sizes you're looking at (it looks like the
4x5 version is a bit more rare these days) and importation issues.

Yes: size, series (because mine is 8.5 W x 5.3 D-active area, but is a
bamboo fun) and importation issues.

Re: configuring wacom tablet with LinuxWacom

2009-04-24 Thread Israel Rodríguez Alonso
I edit the xorg.conf. And if Fedora repo drivers doesn't work, you install
linuxwacom drivers, edit the xorg.conf and reboot (I did this last time).

I use this xorg.conf configuration for tablet:

Section InputDevice
 Driverwacom
 Identifiereraser
 OptionDevice
/dev/input/uinput-devices/uinput-wacom-graphire4-6x8-tablet #USB ONLY
 OptionType eraser
 OptionUSB on#USB ONLY
 OptionPressCurve0,0,100,100
 OptionMode Absolute
 OptionSpeed 1.5
EndSection

Section InputDevice
 Driverwacom
 Identifiercursor
 OptionDevice
/dev/input/uinput-devices/uinput-wacom-graphire4-6x8-tablet #USB ONLY
 OptionType cursor
 OptionMode relative
 OptionUSB on#USB ONLY
 OptionSpeed 1.5
EndSection

Section InputDevice
 Driverwacom
 Identifierpad
 OptionDevice
/dev/input/uinput-devices/uinput-wacom-graphire4-6x8-tablet #USB ONLY
 OptionType pad
 OptionUSB on#USB ONLY
 OptionButton1 6
 OptionButton2 7
 OptionButton3 4
 OptionButton4 5
EndSection

And then I added this to Server Layout:
InputDevicepad # For Intuos3/Cintiq
21UX/Graphire/Bamboo tablets
 InputDevicestylusSendCoreEvents
 InputDeviceeraserSendCoreEvents
 InputDevicecursorSendCoreEvents# For non-LCD
tablets only

Finally I configured the tablet on Inkscape and GIMP.

It worked directly or you had to edit xorg.conf? ...maybe I will clean the
dust from my own and give it a try :D
