I found some info, though it doesn't look like the full details are publicly known. The device shows itself as two devices and indicates different types for each so that one looks like mass storage and the other a cd drive. It is suspected that nonstandard scsi commands are required to write to the cd device. Some people have tricked one of the available tools into loading custom isos into the cd portion of the device. So it looks like you do need a special tool if you want to have the space initially reserved for the cd image released for use in the normal part. Probably theer is some secret scsi command to do this that wouldn't be too hard to find if someone were serious about figuring it out. Why anyone would want one of these devices is beyond me. It's a security nightmare for both the computer being used (due to autorun being enabled) and the usb device owner (due to not just running code from the device). If you own both, there is no reason to have that feature. -- fedora-list mailing list fedora-list@redhat.com To unsubscribe: https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/MailingListGuidelines

Perhaps this is similar to your model 7500, I have no idea so you would need to check this. intermittent network problems
I have his one box that experiences connection losses from time to time, generally for less than a minute to several). I'm convinced it's not a software issue as it's just happened with F10 or the first time since upgrading. I've swapped cables several times (each time, the cable works fine on other machines) and, though temporarily unplugging the cat5 sometimes gets it to come back up, this doesn't always work (I'm guessing coincidence). Anyway, it just happened again, though this time as it was booting up. It got as far as the white "Fedora" and hung. I hit the down arrow to see that it was hung at starting the firewall. I hit another key (don't know which) and saw what looked like a stack trace and a mention that the network had timed out (pasted below). After some minutes, it continued on its way. I figure at this point that it's a bad network card, though I'm really unsure. I think it's obviously not Fedora issue, at any rate. I don't know a whole lot about debugging this sort of thing so I'm hoping someone might have some pointers on how to do so. Is there any way to debug a flaky network card? Should I even bother (ie. just replace it)? Re: setting X server DPI
Ideally, the X server has the correct DPIs and the application is written to use them. The application can discover the number of pixels in a 12pt font and enlarge or not depending on the answer and the purpose. Given that many applications don't do that, lying about the DPIs is a perfectly sensible thing to do. That isn't good for applications that would otherwise do the right thing. There probably isn't a good answer for letting existing applications coexist. Perhaps new applications could look for resources like REAL_DPIX and REAL_DPIY. If they are there and represent numbers, they would be used instead of the lies told the X server. -- Michael henne...@web.cs.ndsu.nodak.edu "Pessimist: The glass is half empty. Probably the latter :-) Seriously, there are too many variables in what you describe to be sure of what happened, including the time factor (since the repos change, and in fact the NM update was pushed impressively fast). S 12:20 0:00 /usr/bin/python -E > /usr/bin/sealert -s You can't add up the VSZ sizes of processes and arrive at a simple sum, because you don't have enough information. Program 1 links to library A and uses shared memory B => VSZ1 = SizeOf(1) + SizeOf(A) + SizeOf(B) Program 2 also links to library A and uses shared memory B => VSZ2 = SizeOf(2) + SizeOf(A) + SizeOf(B) So you'd think that the total memory in use would be VSZ1+VSZ2, but each library is only in memory once so in actual fact it's only VSZ1+SizeOf(2). To look at it another way, say you have 1000 processes running using 1kb, each linking in a different library of 1kb. The VSZ of each of them would only be 2kb. You then have an additional process using 1kb running, that links in *all* of the 1000 libraries already in memory. It's VSZ would be 1001kb, even though it's actually only using 1kb more of memory. Tim wrote, On 03/10/2009 12:50 PM: It all became too much of a pain... I could, about 80% of the time, get labels to go through one of my old inkjets, before it died. But, it didn't always print in the same place (vertical-wise). And, thanks to programming idiots who play silly games with DPI, it was impossible to print where I wanted. i.e. On my much older computer and printer, if I said a box started 12 cm down, and 5 cm across, was 3 cm high and 5 cm wide, then it printed exactly as I specified. On the newer gear, where it threw away standards, and turned them into arbitrary unspecified figures, I had to waste paper doing test prints and making tiny unpredictable adjustments, to get things to print right. I really hate pinheads who stuff things up until it *seems* to work for them, without understanding what they're doing. It stuffs things up for everyone *else* in an unmanageable way. Are you speaking of gimp/gutenprint? IIRC after I had a few discussions with Robert about why my postscript circles were coming out as ellipses, he included an option in the new gutenprints so that you could turn off the 'shrink to fit'. Looking for input on yum metadata_expire option
Hi For those who didn't know, metadata_expire value in yum.conf can control how much time yum will rely on the existing metadata before trying to refresh it. f you want the behaviour to be similar to apt, then you can set it to never as well. The default value is 6 hours now. I had a recent discussion with Seth Vidal, the primary developer of yum about increasing it to a day instead of 6 hours. We are now looking for input from you, the Fedora users on what value would be appropriate. If you have fiddled around with this setting, let me know what you think. If you haven't try it out and I would appreciate your feedback as well. I had one printer that was a straight shot through if you were using manual feed, and opened up a door in the back - you could adjust it for just about any thickness of paper. (I think is was a dot matrix printer.) The 6L works well for thicker card stock with manual feed because it does not make a U bend - just one 60 degree bend. Things like business card stock work in all of them. I have lost tract of the number of cards I have printed over the years. For inkjet printers, I think the HP printers are about the worst. They require the paper to make a tight U bend. I have had better luck with the Lexmark printers - the paper path is more like the Laserjet 6L, so the labels stay on the paper, and feed through straight. All the font rendering libraries these days take point sizes at the primary means of specifying font size, but the point (he-he :-) is that the physical device eventually renders the fonts by turning pixels on or off. If you only have 40 pixels per inch, then a 12 point font is gonna need to be rendered on that device in ((12/72)*40 pixels (which comes out to 7 even if you round up), then considering that the lower case characters are only about half height and you have a grand total of 3 or 4 pixels available to render the entire set of glyphs in a font. No can read :-). Even with anti-aliasing and greyscale values for the pixels, rendering readable characters cannot be done. Often this is what you want. If you are preparing a print preview, unreadable little smudges that give you an idea of where the line goes is perfectly OK, but if you are trying to read menus and dialog boxes and get work done it is hopeless. You could re-write every application in the universe to carefully deduce some "readability" factor based on the available pixels to render the requested font size and request a different size font for thing it intends to be readable, or you can lie about the DPI and not rewrite every single app in the universe. Guess which one is more practical :-). Just like you can calculate orbits with an earth-centric model and epicycles within epicycles, or you could use a sun-centric model and a simple ellipse. They both get the same result, but one is a heck of a lot simpler than the other. -- fedora-list mailing list fedora-list@redhat.com To unsubscribe: https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/MailingListGuidelines

F10 WOL doesn't work with suspend
WOL works when I halt the system, but not suspend. I used "ethtool -s eth0 wol g" to enable WOL on the NIC. After halting the system, the link light on the NIC stays on and I can wake it up with WOL from a different system. When I suspends the system, the link light on the NIC goes off and I can't wake the system up with WOL. (It will wake up if I touch the mouse or the keyboard.) I did some seach online and some people mentioned I need to put the network module on the "MODULES_WHITELIST" at /etc/default/acpi-support so suspend wouldn't unload the NIC driver. But there is no /etc/default/acpi-support on my system (Fedora 10). If you specify a 12 point font on a 46" 1920x1080 display, you will wind up drawing some random smudge of bits that is indeed able to fit on a line that is 12/72 of an inch high, but there aren't enough frigging pixels to render the font in any fashion that makes it remotely possible to discern what the character actually represents. As long as all the software in the universe insists on defaulting to things like 9 or 12 point fonts for menu items and login screens no sane person would want the default DPI to actually match the hardware because they couldn't possibly read what it says enough to even find the dialog box they need to fix it. If some poor soul suffers from OCD so badly that he goes into uncontrollable tremors and breaks out in a sweat if the measured size of the font doesn't match the requested size, they by all means let him check the box that says "render actual size", but I'm not willing to set my screen to "actual size" just because he breaks into a cold sweat knowing that I have it set "wrong". That appears as an IMAP sub-folder and when I view that label in the Gmail web interface or in a real client it shows all my messages to the list. The only downside is that it doesn't consider them "new" messages, so when I view that folder/label my messages are already read - but as I tend to read them as I write them, I don't consider that a massive drawback ;o) I've been using GMail for all my mail (it pulls from my other accounts via POP3) for about 3 months and I am generally very happy. Hmm, that can get messy if servers do something unpredictable. e.g. It's expected that each message has a unique number. The mail client knows that if it's fetched message X, then it doesn't need to fetch it again. If a server gives a new message the same number as one the client has already fetched, the client thinks its the old message that it's fetched, so it doesn't fetch this one. And there's other gotchas: Clients not downloading what it thinks are "read" messages, where the flagging of "read" has been inappropriately associated with a message. Broken messages jamming up the server. There's a rather lengthy list of things that go wrong when you try leaving messages on servers, particularly when using protocols not really designed for that sort of thing (like POP3). I got thoroughly sick of having to deal with other people's mail servers (my ISPs, and other mail service providers). Now I run my own, which fetches and deletes all mail from remote services, and my local mail server holds everything. Local clients use IMAP to access it. Local clients store nothing. What's been read on one box can easily be accessed from another box. -- [...@localhost ~]$ uname -r 2.6.27.15-78.2.23.fc9.i686 Don't send private replies to my address, the mailbox is ignored. No, you don't. Certainly not from the point you'd advocate, of giving some false meaning to font sizes. Yes, if designing wall posters, or the like, you'd work out how it'd be viewed, then pick a font size that's appropriate to the thing. You wouldn't redefine 12 points to be something else so you could say that's 12 point text up there (when it most definitely is NOT), just because it seems the same as when I hold 12 point text on a sheet of A4 in my hands. In the case of posters, you might know that it's going to be read at five feet away, mostly front on, and usability guides might say that you should have 3 inch high text for certain parts of the text. You'd specify the height, and it'd work out the point size to use, the real point size, not some artificially made up thing. > The reason 96 should be the default is that 96 can at least be read > on every display device I've ever seen, so you'll at least be able > to see what your are doing while getting things set the way you > actually want them. The reason is just cargo cult mentality. > The "actual representation" of a 9 point font (a perfectly readable > size on a laser priner) makes about 3 or 4 pixels available to render > lower case letters on a 46 inch 1920x1080 HD display. Great fun trying > to navigate to the font settings dialog when all the menu items > are 4 pixels high. And that's what happens when you use measurement systems inappropriately. DPI has a real meaning, and so does "point" sizes. When you misuse one, then another, you compound the problem. Point sizes are *absolute*, specific "fractions of an inch," if you want a simple one-phrase explanation. The computer uses your DPI, combined with a description of the size of the display medium, to work out how many dots to use get text at the point size specified. i.e. 12 point text is the same size whether printed on 2 inches of paper, or 20 inches of paper. If you want to scale fonts to be readable at certain distances, of an *apparent* size, but not actually the same size on the different displays, THEN YOU DON'T SPECIFY SIZES IN POINTS! Specifying fonts in pixel sizes is the wrong way to go about it, for the same reasons. You can only use such font sizing schemes when designing graphics for a fixed size display. > Or consider Samsung HD displays. The one I just got has EDID info > that claims it is 160 x 90 millimeters - that gives 305 DPI as the > "actual representation" which makes the fonts so large the font > settings dialog won't fit on the screen. Your attempting to use a broken ruler to support broken facts. > Then there are projectors. You can't possibly tell what the > "actual representation" is because it depends on how far away the > screen it. That's where you're wrong. Firstly, you can tell the distance from the screen (given semi-decent hardware which actually takes note of the focus settings - focus is a distance-dependent thing). Knowing the optics and the distance, you can know the screen size (and therefore know the actual DPI - where you're changing the size, rather than the number of dots, this time). But still, as I said above, if you're expecting certain point size text to display at different sizes, then you're doing it wrong. You've got two choices at doing it right: Not using point sizes. Or not doing something stupid like wanting to specify 12 point text when you're going to do a projected display. > By all means let the actual representation fanatics set the DPI > to the actual representation if that is what they want, but for > Gods sake don't make it the default setting. Make the default > something everyone will be able to read. Make the default settings stop *misusing* printing systems. It's just pandering to the ignorant to call something 12 point text when it's not 12 point text, simply because people are used to it. Even when misused in the way that most people expect it, it doesn't work how you want it to work. 12 point text is different on one thing to another, whether you measure it with a ruler, or try playing scaling games for viewing distance. It's as bogus as Wattage stated in PMPO. As it stands, on computer software, when you pick 12 points, or even 12 pixels, for text, the unit is actually meaningless. It's 12 variable *somethings*. You might as well call it centimetres, then claim that we use different centimetres than everyone else. -- [...@localhost ~]$ uname -r 2.6.27.15-78.2.23.fc9.i686 Don't send private replies to my address, the mailbox is ignored.
