Tapazole pills-tip on pilling

2006-02-08 Thread wendy
Hey guys,

Julie, our kitty who now has hyperthyroidism, is not
easy to pill. She's very sneaky and sometimes I will
find pills I thought she had swallowed lying around
the house. Well, when I tried to score Julie's new
Tapazole pills in half, they just kept breaking into
pieces because the pill is very brittle and light,
which I was not happy about. Usually one pill broke
into two larger and two smaller pieces. So I put all
the pieces in a baggie and have been giving her those
until I can use the ones that are actually halves.
But what I found was that if I break up the remaining
larger piece into about three pieces, making it four
small pieces total, it's so much easier to get her to
take them. I think they dissolve easier and quicker
when in the smaller pieces. And it doesn't hurt that
they are tasteless. Who knew that something I was
griping about earlier would turn out to teach me an
easier way to do something! Anyway, hope this helps
some of you!

:)

Marylyn: Hypertension and Julie, our geriatric kitty

2006-02-08 Thread wendy
Hi Marylyn,

Julie is 16.5 years old. She's a Maine Coon kitty.
So sweet, until she has to take a pill. lol. I guess
we'll both become used to it after time. Thanks for
the info. I added it to the manual and will keep
compounding in mind. I tasted one of the pills and it
was completely tasteless, so you might want to look
into getting the kind that is tasteless. I saw it on
the websites of either 1-800-petmeds, drs. foster
smith, or entirely pets. It was one of the last two I
believe.

Thanks for the info.!
:)

Personally I prefer the pills because you know
 exactly what the cat is
getting (except with Kitty who spits them out when I
 am not looking). The
pills are very bitter so coating them with something
 may be helpful. Keep
up on the bloodwork. The amount she needs can
 change. Once everything is
stabilized you may want to consider radiation
 treatment for the thyroid. I
would with Kitty but it would be too traumatic for
 her and, in her current
position, I don't want to stress her any more than I
 have to. Pull up some
articles on this condition but do not be scared.
 How old is your cat?

2006-02-08 Thread Marylyn
I'm not sure of the cost. The figure of $1000.00 was mentioned when I was
considering it for Kitty. It is a once in a life time event. Had Kitty not
developed cancer I would have had it done in a heart beat. Even using the
topical meds stresses her. She was feral when she moved in with my parents
then was forced to move in with me. The cat has to stay at the clinic where
the radiation is done for a few days but I didn't pursue it further. Good
luck. If you do use it, please let me know how it turns out. I am sure I'll
wind up with another cat with the problem eventually.

Re: New to list...kittens with FeLV

2006-02-08 Thread Kerry MacKenzie

Dear Clarissa
You've had great feedback already from this wonderful group,
I'm just throwing in my 2 cents worth. I took in a colony
of5feralkittens and 1 adult (it was freezing winter in
Chicago, 2 years ago) and all but one tested positive. Four of them eventually
sadly succumbed but before doing so they enjoyed 1 - 2 years of rambunctious
playfulness and wonderful quality of life, and I have no regrets--I know I did
the right thing in allowing them to live their lives and they brought me a huge
amount of pleasure even if they never did let me pick them up (except when they
got ill)!
I haven't tried Mega C--I will, tho--but I've always given
them L-Lysin. The remaining 2 cats are still healthy--one tested positive for
FeLv, the other--the original adult -- is negative. I still give them each a
crushed 500 mg L-Lysin tablet in their food every day, to boost their immune
system. Any drug store has it; I've found Trader Joe has the best price, $2.99
for 100 tablets.

  Subject: New to list...kittens with
  FeLV

  hi,
i'm new to email groups and not sure about all of this.
i just found out the 8 kittens ive been fostering are FeLV posative and
would apreciate any information on what to expect with this illness if i
choose to keep them. the vet and the humane society whom im fostering for want
  to put them down.
the kittens are around 5 months old and from 3 different litters. 2 were
born from a FeLV+ mom and 2 of the others nursed with them. the other 4 have
been in contact with them from about 4 weeks of age. we found out they were
FeLV+ when the humane society finally got them in to be "fixed" last thursday.
the vet did not fix them and taked to me about not keeping them. the woman
from the humane society has yet to call me about this.
right now the kittens are in good health and have wonderful
personalities.i don'tknow what to expect in the near future w this
illness. ive gone from crying the last 5 days to sounding cold about
this.one of my concerns is not being able to aford medical care or
medication in the future which would not be fairto the kittens. the cost
of fixing them and initial shots is going to have to be borrowed. if
anyone can let me know what to expect, what they have been through, any hope
if we keep the angels we would apreciate it.

2006-02-08 Thread Kerry MacKenzie

Hi all
I want to apologize for not being able to post very often at
the moment--my father became suddenly and seriously ill and on life support on
Jan 13 (I went back to UK then). He amazingly pulled through but now there are
further complications--I'm going back to UK again today for 2 weeks.

I love this group and it's a source of sadness to me that I'm
not able to be in touch as regularly. But even thoughI can't post
often just now, please know that you and all your kitties are in my thoughts,
and that I'm sending lots of healing vibes for those of your little furballs
that are sick.
take care and I'll be in touch again asap.

I couldn't get her to the vet until Friday so I gave her Baytril I had left over from Cricket starting on Sunday, which wiped out whatever bacterial infection she might have had, and all her renal functions seemed to be
back to normal by Friday. But I took her in anyway just to be sure, and they ran a urinalysis and total blood/labwork on her. Saturday the vet called me and said her results showed hypertension (she got a 17 on her T4 results, normal is between .4 and 5.2) and he prescribed 10 mg of Tapazole/Methimazole daily. I have to bring her in in two weeks for further blood work to see how the drugs are helping her thyroid. Does anyone here have any experience with hyperthyroidism in their kitty, and what did you do about it? What does T4 measure? Did your kitty pass away from the hyperthyroidism? Did the drugs reverse the heart murmur? What diet would be good for a kitty with hyperthyroidism? Any advice is greatly appreciated! :) Wendy __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail

Bandy's other buddy - Buster Felv+

Hi everyone, Bandy's other buddy--- Buster was diag. with Felv last summer when I had them all checked...I have had him since birth and he will be 14 on March 30. He hasn't shown any symptoms at all. This last week he seems to be having some problems with his back legs...and just notacting up to par...So I am taking him for blood work on Thurs...I am worried that it could be lymphoma, kidneys or anemia... He has lost a little weight lately, too...He still eats good and drinks good...No other signs except I am concerned because he doesn't have the bright pink nose or gums that he should...I also have him on the supplements along with Bandy...I don't know how he got the Felv because he was vaccinated yrs ago before Bandy came to us..He also has always lived in the house since about the age of 2.. Anyway, just wanted you to know..and we will let you know how things turn out on Thurs...Keep Buster in your prayers that his
blood work is good.. Head butts to all, Kerry, Bandy, Buster and Lil Rascal

Kerry,
That's very good news that Bandy's eye is getting better. I know I
sometimes hate to even say something is getting better out loud because
I'm afraid I'll jinx it! It's scary about Buster, but like always,
you're right on top of it. You're such a good cat mom! How many
geriatric kitties do you have?? Bless you and the whole bunch. Let us
know about Buster's test results and prayers for Bandy's eye spot
going away completely.

Love to the gang,
Nina

I know it must be scary, but at 14 it
might just be some of those aches and pains that we all feel I
would think that the fact he is eating and drinking well is a positive
sign. Might be thyroid (since weve been talking about that!)

As for how he got FELVwell, my Tucson tested neg at about 6-8
weeks and 5 years later tested pos. Never been outside since I got her;
never lived with FELV cat; my other 3 (including 2 who came after her as
kittens) all test neg. The two vets I went to both told me she likely had
it since birth (she was born to a stray outside). Periodically, she looks
a little peaked but still manages to stay around 18 lbstrying to get her
to lose some weight but its tough! All but eliminated dry foood but when
all you do is eat and sleep..

Re: OT:send healing energy for my Hannibal, please!

2006-02-08 Thread Nina

Hideyo,
I can't advise you about Epogen, I've never had any experience with
needing it. I can and do send prayers and healing energy Hannibal's
way. I know you love all your babies, but I also know how special
Hannibal is and has been to your life.

Don't you dare reproach yourself for his condition! There isn't anyone
more caring or devoted to their charges as you. You're only one woman
Hideyo and you do so much. There's no way of knowing if Hannibal's
test results would be any different if he'd been getting daily subqs.
You know how fast things can change when it comes to their health. And
you also know just how good cats can be at hiding symptoms from us.
What is your "fault" is that he was taken off the street and learned
what it was to be needed and loved. That is soo your fault.
Hugs to you,
Nina

Chris' Tucson - testing neg than pos

2006-02-08 Thread Nina

Chris,
About your Tucson... I had heard that if the felv is not active, not
replicating, (or something to that effect), when testing is done, then
it won't necessarily show. Maybe that's what happened when she was
tested as a kitten. It's esp scary to me since I've only had Timmy
tested once, (he the only neg out of a litter of pos). I don't really
care, it doesn't really matter. I think of him as neg and treat him as
if he's pos. 18 lbs, that's a big kitty! I guess it just comes from
having so many animals fall ill and lose weight, but I can't imagine
putting anyone on a diet! I know it's not good for them to be obese
though. I've just sadly, never had a pos that was overweight.
Whatever the scale says, here's to many, many more years of continued
health! You're doing something right, keep it up!

Big, fat, tempermental, insanely jealous
not the smartest kid on the block! Thats my Tucson. Ive read
that calicos are determined and she is that! Only thing shes
had problem with is low wbc and twice shes had immuno-regulin and it
bounced back up. I know that when she doesnt wolf down anything
you put in front of her, shes really not feeling well. But basically
shes a big mush who just looks pitiful when she doesnt feel well
and all she has to do is look at me with those big adoring eyes and Im
putty in her hands!
