Hi Julia,

You will get on either 114 or 183, whichever you are
closer to, and head east to Dallas. Both merge into
I-35, and then take I-35 North to 635 east all the way
to Greenville avenue. Exit Greenville and take a
right. You will pass two streets (small streets) and
then it should be on your right, right before Forest
Lane, which is a large intersection. Suite 114. I
looked the location up on the internet and this seems
to be the quickest route unless you are closer to 635,
and then you can take that directly. I hope this
helps. Let me know if you need anything. We're
fixing to leave to go back to Texas, so I won't be on
my computer until late tonight when I get home (after
I love on all my babies!). I hope they are able to
help you and your furbaby Julia!

Diagnosed Today

2006-06-13 Thread lmpalmer
Hi Guys-
I hope I am posting this the right way.
We just found out today that we are positive.
Chester just turned a year old in April. We got him after we was weaned and
has been inside our house ever since. I suspect that he got it from his
mother (his mother was an indoor cat-or that's what we were told). He
didn't show any signs until a few months ago. He came down with a cold and
has been given antibotics for that twice. When he goes off of it he still
is not normal. Right now he has a sore throat and fever. My major concern
is his laying around which he never did as a kitten, he just seems
depressed. Still eating and going to bathroom okay. Doctor gave me Baytril
and Prednisone. Doctor said that he could last a few months but will get
worse. I also have another cat, Timmy 6 years old. Timmy was tested as a
kitten (negative) but not yet recently. Still keeping both together because
if Timmy were going to get it he'd probably already be infected.

I feel horrible. I just need some support as I am new to this whole thing.
Any ideas, suggestions? What should I do? Of course I want to keep Chester
as long as possible but I don't want him to suffer. I want to do what's
best for the cat. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Lisa

Talk to your vet about low dose oral interferon. Also, I don't unnderstand the prednisone. This can hinder immune system functioning and make it harder for him to kick a cold. Baytril can be harsh on a cat's system too. I think I'd probably wean him off the pred and look at Zithromax instead of baytril. Also, I would be adding Transfer Factor to his food to help immune system functioning. Also, please realize that your vet could be very wrong. I had someone adopt a special needs kitten from me last year after her FeLV+ cat passed away. Her vet had suggested euthanizing that cat and she chose to ignoree him. The cat was 12 or 13 when it finally passed away.It wouldn't hurt to have Timmy tested again. If he is still negative, get him vaccinated. Hi Lisa!

You're certainly not alone here! :) That's wonderful that he's still
eating! When Feleuk guys get sick, they often go off their food and it
can be a struggle just to get food into them, let alone address what's
going on illness-wise!

Might I suggest adding some L-lysine to his food? 500mg per day
(usually divided into two meals) is the dosage...it's a great anti-viral
and really brought one of our kittens back from the brink when he was
younger. You can get it at the grocery store...usually in tablet form,
just crush it up and add to food. There doesn't seem to be any adverse
taste...It's the one thing I can give to my guys that I know they won't
detect in their food!

You may also want to ask your vet about Interferon...also a great
anti-viral and immune system booster...it's a clear liquid that you give
orally (no taste).

Unfortunately, I've gotta run...but you'll get plenty of great advice
from this wonderful group! Hang in there! Give Chester a big hug from me!

Re: Diagnosed Today

2006-06-13 Thread Lernermichelle

Lisa,
You may need to change vets, as many of us have had to
do. There are positive cats on this list who have lived as long as 14.
Though that is not the norm, many of us have had positives live to 5, 6, or
longer. I am always afraid of jinxing mine, but I have a 5 year old and a 6 year
old right now, and lost Ginger in February, who was close to 7. One of my others
lived to 5. You need a vet who realizes that positives can live a lot
longer than they used to teach in vet school, with the proper care, and who is
willing to investigate medical options for you.

As far as Chester's health right now, I have two suggestions.
As far as his fever and cold go, I highly, highly recommend that you give him
Immuno-Regulin shots for a while. There is an article about it on the www.felineleukemia.org website (though
the dosage it recommends, 1 ml at a time, is double what many people use).
I have had great success with it getting rid of upper respiratory infections in
a few doses, as have others on this list.

The other thing that could be going on, given your report of
his lethargy, is anemia. Many positives get bad anemia, which makes them weak.
It is caused by various things, from cancer in the bone marrow to auto-immune
reactions to kidney problems to an infectious parasite called hemobartonella.
You should get his blood count taken and, if he is anemic, get a vet to
investigate why. If he has lymphoma, a cancer to which positives are
probe, steroids and chemotherapy can help a whole lot (it is not as harsh on
them as the chemo humans get, and tends to make them feel better). If it
is hemobartonella, he needs an antibiotic. For most other causes of anemia, he
needs steroids and potentially a drug called Epogen that helps them build up
their red blood cells. Several people on this list have brought cats back from
very severe anemia with combinations of Epogen, steroids, and also
Immuno-Regulin, which helps with anemia as well, and antibiotics
(doxicycline).

The best thing is to go to a board-certified veterinary
internist if you can. They are usually at big clinics, vet hospitals, and
veterinary referral centers.

 Please keep us updated.

Off antibiotics?

2006-06-13 Thread elizamaggie

Hi,
I wrote about a week ago with a newly diagnosed 7 month kitten named Lucy. I've read several recommendations that I shouldn't put her back on antibiotics but the problem is that within a week of being off the antibiotics she is deathly ill. Today was day 7 of not being on them and following some of the regimins suggested to boost her immune system and she woke up today with a fever of 106, runny eyes, and barely able to walk. The vet gave me antibiotics again because without them I really believe she would be dead very quickly. For those of you who do recommend no antibiotics, how do you get them well when they get sick right away?

I don't really think any of us recommend no antiobiotics; we just caution
against using them when you don't need to. I would highly, highly recommend a
few doses of Immuno-Regulin-- it helped my Ginger get over a lingering
upper respiratory infection in just two doses-- and she had fever and was not
eating before I gave it to her. Others have had success with this too, with even
worse URI's.

I haven't actually had much use for the EE yet. I've practically gone
through my bottle of "Relationship" adding it to all the water dishes.
The way in which homeopathics work, (so subtly), I never know if it's
just the passage of time, or if they really do help, you know? I have
heard that some cats that don't respond to the RR, do with the EE. I
feel like it's worth keeping it in the house, just in case. What's

Hi Maggie,
I have a concern with prescribing abx indefinitely, but they can save
your baby's life if she needs them. It sounds like whatever abx they
have been prescribing for Lucy is not the right one. When my Grace
first became symptomatic the vet put her on, now I can't remember which,
either Clavomox, or Amoxi. The same thing happened to her as with
Lucy. By the 6th or 7th day of the protocol, she'd start to feel
better. It would last for a day or two after the abx was stopped, but
then she'd crash again. I took her to an Internist and we decided to
put her on Doxycycline because we suspected Hemobart, (even though the
test for it was neg). The Dox did work and I'm sure it saved her life.
Unfortunately, she continued to have relapses on and off for the rest of
her short life and we'd have to put her back on the Dox. If I had it to
do over, I would try the IR that Michelle suggests. It has worked for
kitties with fevers and URI symptoms for other kitties on the list.

What antibiotic is she on? I swear by Zithromax. It's given once a day for 5 days and if effective against even the worst upper respiratory infections. Doesn't seem to upset the tummy the way Baytril does and is so much more effective than Clavamox or amoxicillin or doxycycline.[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Hi, I wrote about a week ago with a newly diagnosed 7 month kitten named Lucy. Re: Diagnosed Today

2006-06-13 Thread Nina

Hi Lisa,
Take a look at the responses to Maggie's posts, Off antibiotics, it
seems like they will apply to you guys as well. I completely agree that
separating Timmy and Chester at this point doesn't make any sense. I
would have Timmy tested, just so you know. Did you have him
tested/vaccinated for felv in the past? If you did, there is a very
good chance that he's still negative. I'd find myself a new vet right
away. So many regular GP type vets have no idea, or the inclination,
to keep a felv kitty healthy. You need to find an Internist, someone
that is more familiar with the secondary illness that felv kitties have
such a hard time with because of their weakened immune systems. Felv
doesn't actually make them sick, but because of it, you can't take a
wait and see approach when they don't feel well.

Kittens are more susceptible to the disease because they haven't
developed a strong enough immune system to fight it off when exposed.
From what you say about his living conditions, it would appear that
Chester got felv from his mother. There is a chance that Timmy is
actually the carrier, another good reason to have him tested.

It's good news that he's still eating and his digestive system is okay.
Did the vet tell you anything about what he suspects is making him feel
ill, (besides the fact that he's tested pos). You need to pinpoint the
secondary illness that's making him sick in order to treat it. Are his
gums pink, or do they look pale? Is he licking strange things like
cement? We just discussed signs of anemia on the list, you might want
to look through the archives for ideas about what's going on with Chester.

I'm so sorry Chester isn't feeling well, but I'm so glad you found us.
I can hear in your words how much you love him, Using the word we
about testing positive says it all. There is every reason to hope that
you've caught his symptoms early enough to help him pull through
whatever's going on. I certainly will be praying that is the case. Get
him to someone that understands that a positive test result is no reason
to give up on him. Please let us know what you find out. We all
understand what you're going through, and we're here to help support
you, Chester and Timmy in any way we can.

Keep your chin up,
Nina

Fwd: [NMHP] Silly bugs, kibble is for cats!

2006-06-13 Thread Lernermichelle

Forwarding for those of you who feed ferals... and because I found her
answer on slugs to be very amusing. It's from the Best Friends No More Homeless
Pets forum, which I recommend by the way and can be joined via their
website.

Michelle

---BeginMessage---

Question
from Louise:
It's almost summer and with summer come bugs! How do I keep them away
from the cats' food? Do you have any other feeding advice?

Response from Meredith Weiss:
Typical bugs attracted to cat food are ants, flies and slugs. Ants
can be kept out of the food by building a small moat. Take a plastic tray
or Tupperware container -- something flat and fairly wide with raised sides --
and fill it with a quarter to a half inch of water. Then put the food in a
separate bowl and place that in the middle of the tray with the water. The
water will prevent the ants from reaching the food, while the cats can easily
lean over and eat.

Slugs - well, strange as it sounds the way I solved this problem was to
feed the slugs separately! Just take a little bit of dry or wet food and
put it on the ground near the slugs, at least several inches away from the cat
food bowls -- they'll be happy to not have to climb into the bowls.

Flies become a problem when the food is left out uneaten in warm
weather. They are more of a problem with canned food than with
dry. If your colony isn't trained to eat at a scheduled time, don't leave
out wet food on hot days. Feed in the evening or at night instead.
Or leave out dry food only.

In the case of asudden rainstorm,it's recommended to have a
covered feeding station for your colony. If this isn't possible and you
have to put food out unprotected from the elements, you can try this method to
keep it dry: Again, take a Tupperware container, or a typical styrofoam
take-out container from arestaurant, usually about nine inches wide.
Fill it withdry food. Place the matching lid on the container upside
down so it is covering the food but not snapped on. Put a few pieces of
food on top of the turned-over lid. Even in this position, the lid will
keep the rain out. When the rains stops and the cats come out they'll
smell the food and flip the lid off to get it.

Both pigeons and raccoons love cat food! Hopefully in your area you
only have one or the other -- not both! If you have pigeons, feed after
dark when the pigeons are sleeping. With raccoons, just the opposite;
usually they rarely venture out during daylight hours. And if you do have
both in your neighborhood -- good luck!Leave out plenty of
food. Raccoons and cats can get along and eat togetherif there's
enough for everybody.

What to feed. Feed the best quality food you can comfortably
afford. If you have a colony of three you may be able to feed a higher
quality (more expensive) food than if you have a large colony. You may
find that if you switch from a low quality to a higher one you'll soon be
feeding a smaller quantity, so when you average out the cost, it may not be much
greater after all. And if you do switch, do it gradually, mixing in the
old with the new.

Generally, canned food is more nutritious than dry, but almost all feral
cats will have to be given dry food at least some times for a variety of
reasons. Check the ingredients on the label. If the first one is some kind
of grain, or byproducts, it's not the best food as it contains mostly that
ingredient. Remember, cats are carnivores and actually require no
carbohydrates at all.

should be done specifically checking for anemia. Check his gums and see
if they look pale, they should be nice and pink.

2 littermates - one pos/one neg

2006-06-13 Thread janine paton
Hi all,

Two brothers, 7 weeks today tested one positive, one
negative for leukemia. The mom is feral, and has not
been tested yet, but her sister tested positive. The
mom had been trapped by someone trying to do the right
thing, but the kittens were born beforre she could get
her to the vet. All have been living together crated
in this person's home.

As an organization, we had a pair of littermates
testing the same as these 2, and we let them stay
together. The positive cat died at around 3 yrs, the
negative cat is still negative (and has recently been
adopted!) so it's not entirely new to me but what's
the best thing to do? Try to adopt them out as a
pair? Separate them now? Or it doesn't matter at
this point, even if the negative kitten is so young?

The test was Elysa and we are re-running both.

Thanks!

Janine

He is on Natural Balance, I would like to get him onto raw. This boy has not really shown any signs of illness other then what I've mentioned, and the vet seems to think that his health is not really too bad. Re: Off antibiotics?

2006-06-13 Thread gwork

It sounds like a few things could be
going on. 1) She isn't on the right antibiotic, 2) she isn't
ona "strong" enough one (one that can reach deep areas - Clavamox and
Amoxi are "weaker"), 3) she isn't staying on it long enough, 4) she isn't being
given the proper dosage. Check the manufacturer's recommendations, not
just what your doctor tells you. Also, being immuno-compromised, it could
take a lot longer for her to beat the bacteria. 7-10 days is standard for
a normal, healthy cat. It may also be sufficient for your + cat sometimes,
but also maybe not sometimes. I think it is also important to note that it
isnot bad to have your cat on antibiotics, but only when actually
necessary. Baytril isone highly effective antibiotic.

  Hi,
I wrote about a week ago with a newly diagnosed 7 month kitten named
Lucy. I've read several recommendations that I shouldn't put her back on
antibiotics but the problem is that within a week of being off the antibiotics
she is deathly ill. Today was day 7 of not being on them and following some of
the regimins suggested to boost her immune system and she woke up today with a
fever of 106, runny eyes, and barely able to walk. The vet gave me antibiotics
again because without them I really believe she would be dead very quickly.
For those of you who do recommend no antibiotics, how do you get them well
when they get sick right away?

  Thanks,
  Maggie

Re: Diagnosed Today

2006-06-13 Thread gwork
The lethargy could be a sign of anemia - check his gums, or tongue, if
that's easier - but it could also be that he just doesn't feel well with the
fever. Usually if they get too anemic, they won't eat but will eat or lick
unusual things like litter. Baytril is a good antibiotic, and I think your
vet is giving pred in relation to thoughts of anemia, but with his current
illness, this is not good as pred is an immune suppressant, not to mention I
don't think it is necessarily the best way of handling anemia. I would
switch vets to someone who has a more positive outlook on felv cats, get
some blood drawn to check RBC/PCV for anemia and other vital stats, and go
from there. I have seen internists suggested a lot on this site as well.
Make sure he is getting the proper dosage and is on the antibiotic long
enough. + cats may need to be on meds for extended times. My cat Spaz
wasn't diagnosed 'til age 8, and she's almost 14 now. She had two severe
rounds with anemia and one bad URI (hospitalized for 9 days), but she's been
doing great for over 2 years now. So hopefully that gives you some
positivity :) I can assure you everyone on this list will be pulling for
you!

Hi Guys-
I hope I am posting this the right way.
We just found out today that we are positive.
Chester just turned a year old in April. We got him after we was weaned
and

has been inside our house ever since. I suspect that he got it from his
mother (his mother was an indoor cat-or that's what we were told). He
didn't show any signs until a few months ago. He came down with a cold
and

has been given antibotics for that twice. When he goes off of it he still
is not normal. Right now he has a sore throat and fever. My major
concern

is his laying around which he never did as a kitten, he just seems
depressed. Still eating and going to bathroom okay. Doctor gave me
Baytril

and Prednisone. Doctor said that he could last a few months but will get
worse. I also have another cat, Timmy 6 years old. Timmy was tested as a
kitten (negative) but not yet recently. Still keeping both together
because

if Timmy were going to get it he'd probably already be infected.

I feel horrible. I just need some support as I am new to this whole
thing.
Any ideas, suggestions? What should I do? Of course I want to keep
Chester

as long as possible but I don't want him to suffer. I want to do what's
best for the cat. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Lisa
