Luy not eating
Well, as of last night she will not eat at all. She was hardly eating since I gave her the dex shot the night before, I think because it unmasked her URI and her nose got congested. I have a vicks vaporizer on for that, used nose drops, gave lysine, etc. but it is not clearing up this time. But she was eating a little. I then gave her denosyl for the third night in a row. And I think it made her nauseous, because she has not eaten a thing since and and she looked bad for about an hour afterwards. I looked it up and it can cause vomiting, apparently-- don't know how I missed that the first time. The second night I think it may have made her temporarily nauseous as well, but I thought it was the feline interferon. The result is that she is not eating at all now. I did syringe her a little (about 20 cc' baby food) last night. But she hated it. I don't know what to do. She probably has wet fip. I had told myself I would not torture her by force feeding her when she is terminal anyway. But I don't know now. What if she really is not eating just because her nose is stuffed up from the dex? Monday will be week 2 of epogen and feline interferon-- what if they started working? It is all doubtful. I do not want her last days to be full only of needles, pills, and forced feedings. I also don't want her to die early because of a stuffed up nose, if that is what is going on. what to do? Please pray for her. thanks, Michelle

She ate a tiny bit (like maybe 10 licks). So finally I syringe fed her 2/3 of a jar of baby food, with gray petting her as I did. She did not seem to hate it that much, and perhaps less than having food shoved in front of her face every 30 minutes, and afterwards she washed her face and then purred while I pet her. Maybe I will do this a few times a day for a few days and see, unless she starts to hate it more. confused and depressed, but cuddling with my girl, Michelle
I am praying
I am praying for you and your precious Lucy. We all understand how hard these decisions are to make. I think eating is the most important thing and it is so hard when the cat is fighting you. I am sure I will be in your shoes down the road with Junior. I spoke with the vet yesterday about refilling his eye antibiotic. SHe said it wasn't neccessary. He has lost most of the sight in his good eye and is adjusting to his partial blindness. He never got steriod drops for his eye and I am not sure if this will help with the dilation or not. His pupil is dialated and irregular shaped. It has been this way for weeks. The conjunctivitis did clear up so I am dsure the infection is gone. He is on Transfer Factor Plus, CoQ10, lysine and Pet Tinic( now Pet Tabs plus Iron). He is definitely feeling better and put back on some weight. I hate when he gets skinny. I will leave him alone for a few days and see how the eye does. I just went into the living room where he is sleeping on the vent(warm there). I picked him up and instead of protesting or growling like he usally does he was purring. He is feeling better. Maybe the Transfer Factor Plus that was added to his routine a week ago. The vet says he should have visits every 4-6 weeks. If he can go that long without a crisis that would be great. I think he is past the initial infection stage. I am hoping to maintain his health. Thanks everyone for all your help. Lance thanks for answering my question about the Transfer Factor Plus. I told my vet I was using this. It should be interesting to see how he is a month from now. My vet doesn't normally run lots of blood work. The anemia can be checked fairly cheaply in house. I have paid some of the bill at the vet's office. The rest is on credit cards and will take a while. Re: Dede and Spud
Sorry, I didn't say anything because i do rescue, and this guy is not FeLV+. Spud is about 11yrs old. He is FIV+ and has stomatitis. For some reason, he develpoed a UTI about a month ago, and there is a lot of blood in his urine. The vet has switched antibiotics from Baytril to clavamox, and there does not seem to be so much blood. He won't eat unless I force feed him first...go figure. He has lost quite a bit of weight, and i give some fluids to help flush his system a bit. He seems comfortable except when i feed him, then he screams from the mouth pain. (we are using amantadine and steroids for this, but have discontinued due to the kidney infection) We have lost several cats within the past year, and I know he is not ready to cross over yet. I just never get used to letting one go...I know no one on this list does. We just love each one so. Anyway, that is why I feel for Michelle. Been there, done that, and I hate it. But, they are worth it, and we are better people for knowing them. Dede --- Nina [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm sorry that Spud is not doing well. Do you want to tell us about it? Bill Clark just called me (he does cat rescue here in Florida also) Anyone want a healthy FeLV cat? His name is Norman. He is orange and is 10mo. old He is a DSH and is front declawed. Came from an A/C raid on a place in Fl. He is friendly, friendly and more friendly. He is living in a cage now, and Bill needs a foster or permanent placement. Bill will bring him to you. (Idon't know about if you live in California!) He will always take a cat back if it doesn't work out, or if the cat gets too sick etc. I'd take him, but with 40 cats and a move to NY coming up in 2 mo, I am already a basket case. What else is new??? (smile) Anyone interested? Dede When you are in the service of your fellow beings, you are only in the service of your God Mosiah 2:17 Do you Yahoo!? That is great progress! tonya Susan Loesch [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Animal Control is -- better than it used to be. We haven't been able to get them to round up the pack of dogs running in the area but in a miracle of a turn of events just a little while ago we found out that the head of AC is going to work with our rescue group on Operation Jack that our President just proposed to him -- a massive TNR effort in Jack's neighborhood. We determined that we needed to do this and got all our input during our searches for Jack. He is offering his facility to our vet -- and will sanction the altered animals and not pick them up -- we will ear-tip so AC will know what is what. I can't tell you what a development this is -- it is groundbreaking for this city -- such a big development that we can't really take it all in yet. Nina [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oh my dear, be very careful. You're not going to find anyone being indulgent or open to education under those circumstances. How is Animal Control around there? Don't let those people think for a minute that you will be sticking your nose in their horrid business. Covert is definitely the word for dealing with that sort of thing. Just the thought makes my stomach churn. The dogs for protection people can sometimes be reached with reason and tact, (hard to do, but you have to approach them as if you do believe they have some feelings for their animals). There was a group of people, I can't remember the organization's name, that used to go door to door with things like run lines to install for dogs chained up. You know, a line strung from tree to tree, (or post to post), that would allow the dog a little more freedom of movement. They'd bring gifts of food and supplies and try to get their message out to the people that might be swayed. Bless their hearts, and your's too, it seems to be a never ending uphill battle. Nina Susan Loesch wrote: Most of the dogs we have come across are strictly for protection - and we wonder how well cared for. Maybe I will do this a few times a day for a few days and see, unless she starts to hate it more. Knowing where to draw the line in giving supportive care is always difficult. I lost my Samantha to intestinal lymphoma last summer. The previous winter, she had a severe URI, and we knew she had the lymphoma. She quit eating. I decided there was no way she was going to die of a stuffed up nose, no matter how much she hated being force-fed. I cried while syringe feeding her many times. She didn't eat on her own for two weeks, but finally started eating. She got to really enjoy the springtime, and I took huge pleasure in seeing her sunbathing on our back patio. She would roll and rub and show her happiness to still be alive. It was definitely worth it. As summer progressed, she took a turn for the worse and it became evident it was her time. I will never regret force feeding her those weeks; it gave her that last wonderful spring. That doesn't mean force-feeding Lucy is right or will always be right, just that if it is only the congestion preventing her from eating, it may be the right thing even if she doesn't like it. Peace to you and Lucy. Lynette

I would do the force feeding if she's not fighting it too much. If she's miserable and fighting it, I may consider it time to make that hard decision. I think it's a good idea - with some of my cats that I have is not something I can't afford not to - if I need to keep them alive (and they are not in pain or anything.. they just cannot eat from their conditions), I need to assist feed them.. I am trying to do this as a matter of fact - as It was difficult with Dharma and Naomi as they hated when I dd it...but at the same time,, Dharma wouldn't have started eating on her own, if I did not assist feed her the meantime..as she would have gotten weaker.. _ From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, February 03, 2007 7:01 AM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: Luy not eating She ate a tiny bit (like maybe 10 licks). Hi Michelle, I haven't had a chance to catch up on all of this, but I read that someone said stay on dex...I would have to agree with this..I don't think the fevers are from the dex..That would be almost impossible..I think.. Is she drinking on her own at all? I would stay with the clindamycin, dex, feline interferon and epogen.. Have you recently given her immuno-regulin? Bandy received all those things except the feline interferon at the same time and always with good results...They always mentioned he had FIP, but I would just disagree with them..guess cause his tests didn't really reflect it at the specialist..Commits were always made about it at his local vet.. When Bandy wouldn't eat...I would do as I am sure you are..try everything..Kitten food would work sometimes when all else failed..he was on hills kitten food most of the time anyway.. But I would buy can kitten food..and even offer him other not so good smelly things...Just getting him to eat anything would sometimes make him turn the corner to go back on his regular diet.. The egg yolk, white karo and evap milk..sometimes would work, too..I don't know how Lucy's IBD would handle that though..Have you tried cat-sure?
