Re: Update on Kisa

2007-05-23 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Cassandra,

You may want to approach your vet if you can use
injectable famotodine for the vomiting. Also, the
Baytril comes in injectable form as well. If she is
not keeping food down, she is not going to keep the
medication down either.

I am so sorry that you and your cats are having such a
rough patch! I hope everything works out!

Sincerely,

Precious Pets

Well, after going to the vet today, it's not looking
 good for Kisa.

She has elevated bilirubin in her blood/urine, and
elevated number of lymphocytes. Therefore they
believe she has a liver disease, possibly
 lymphosarcoma.

The only way they can tell for sure what the problem
is with her liver is to do a biopsy which means
surgery. They didn't suggest doing this though
because of the FeLV and her immune system being
 compromised.

They gave me prednisone and baytril for her, though
i'm really not sure how she'll handle keeping those
down when she is vomiting so easily. They're hoping
the steroid will make her feel a little better and
 maybe regain some appetite.

I've really got to try and get her to eat something,
she hasn't eaten since Saturday night now.

I don't understand why this is all happening at
once. First I watched Tomi get sicker and sicker
for nearly 2 months. As soon as he started getting
better, Koda got sick with kidney and liver failure,
and died. Now, barely a week later Kisa goes from
being a super healthy and active cat to death's
door. I haven't even had enough time to get used to
Koda being gone, now its another crisis situation.

This is all after having nothing but healthy, happy,
and active cats for 12 years.

I used to think how awful it would be if my house
burned down while I was away and my 5 cats were
inside. What is happening now is almost worse than
that since it is so prolonged and i'm beginning to
wonder if something I am doing is causing all this
(like feeding raw food). I've always kept my cats
indoors because I didn't want them to get run over
by a car, etcbut they seem to be no safer
 indoors.

Sorry for venting on you all, its just really
starting to affect me, both emotionally and
 financially.

Spock Abner were the best of pals. They would
 wrestle run all over and
cuddle together and groom each other. Spock was
just 6 months old when we
adopted him, and we had him for one great year,
 before he started getting

that he had to go on a diet! But even at his

 Spock) kitten meow - his

  The
next cat you see in the group is Bailey. She's the

lives upstairs. She wants nothing to do with the
 boys, and it's better for
her that she's kept separated, as she has IBD and
 being exposed to FELV

students; my third period. They saw my reaction (I'm
terrible at hiding how I feel). They had a ton of
 questions which I answered.

Anyway, the weekend passed and on Monday, they
wanted to know how Luna was. I told them. They were
so sympathetic and all wanted to hug me (they're
6thth graders) that it made me cry. The following
day,
Tuesday, I had a bunch of homemade sympathy cards.
Also, one student brought me a dozen roses and a
homemade card which he and his mom signed.

To let you know how much more wonderful they are,
apparently, behind my back, they were plotting to
get me another kitty. The guidance counselor wanted
to know if I was going to do something with cats in
my class because many kids were asking her about
them. Anyway, it turns out that one student had a
kitten left from a litter that they couldn't find a
home for. The kids decided that would be my new cat.
The child along with her parents brought the kitten
to my house Tuesday evening. How sweet is that? It's
so nice to know that so many people care.

I named him Gabriel after God's messenger angel. I
felt the name was appropriate. I students were all
angels and the kitty is a wonderful gift.

Re: Update: :( (not looking good) Sorry So Long! (Belinda)

2006-10-22 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Dear Terrie:

Michelle is right regarding that there is no definite
test for FIP. The test that majority of the vets
recommend is a test for Corona viruses. The vets
think there is over 250 different types of Corona
viruses in the world and maybe more then that have not
be discovered. Most cats have been exposed to a
Corona virus at one point or another. Personally
myself, if one of our cats may be suspected to have
gotten FIP, I will not use this test! Most URIs are
Corona virus based.

Actually, there is research being done by a vet who is
developing a new test for FIP. I know that my vet
past me the letter from this vet about a year ago.
This vet was requesting specimens from other vets that
had clients whose cats had been exposed and had died
from FIP. The tissue specimens could only be
harvested after the cat is died. I called and talked
this vet inquiring about testing cats that had been
exposed to FIP and survived for three years. This vet
is not taking any blood specimens from live cats that
have been exposed to FIP. That was my problem. You
see I lived though a FIP outbreak for four months
about four years ago. It was the worst time in my
life! I never want to live though a FIP outbreak
again! I held too many cats and kittens that had to
be put down due to FIP and some of them were my own.
I use to let my foster cats free roam with my personal
cats. Never again! All foster cats are now living in
a separate room with their own cages.

Do my reminding cats have FIP? Who knows! They are
healthly and happy and showing no signs of FIP going
on four years now! There is hope for any cats that
you have that are not showing signs of FIP. Just take
one day at a time!

 viruses are treatable
with antibiotica, like toxoplasmosis is a corona
 virus, I think.

If this is FIP, you absolutely should not assume
 your others have or will
get it. That is not how it works.

Avid micro-chipping registration fee is $15.00 per
animal. Avid has a registration program for eight
pets for the total cost of $40.00. This is even worth
using if you only have three animals because you save
$5.00. There is a $4.00 surcharge for every time you
update your personal information.

If I am not mistaken Avid is the number one micro-chip
company in the United States being used by animal
shelters and rescue groups. Home Again is the second
leading micro-chip company being used. I know in
Chicago, Illinois that the city's animal control and
Anti-cruelty Society (the biggest non-government
agency) use Avid micro-chips on their animals. The
group I volunteer for Precious Pets, Almost Home uses
the Avid micro-chips in their rescue pets.

You may want to check the shelters and rescue groups
in your area to see what brand of micro-chips they are
using. You see Avid micro-chip scanners do not read
the Home Again micro-chips and vice a verse. There is
a universal micro-chip scanner that can pick up all
different types of micro-chips. The problem is that
most shelters and rescue groups do not have one! The
universal micro-chip scanner is very expensive!

Since I started doing rescue, I encourage anybody that
ask me about it to have their pet micro-chip! Food
for thought!

Please bear with me here in writing this, I didn't
know how hard it would be

I spend my weekends at my boyfriend's house and take
 the cats with me (they
love him and his dog, and I don't like leaving
 them). Monday mornings I
pack everything up including the cats, go back in to
 say goodbye to Ed, and
then drive the 20 minutes home.

This morning I loaded in my groceries, my school
books, the cats, go back in
kiss Ed goodbye, grab my breakfast in a tupperware
 from the fridge and go
back outside to find someone in my car backing it
 out of the driveway. The
doors were unlocked, but there was no key inside it,
 so they must have
hotwired it. I ran at the car backing up, yelling,
 hey and get out and
banging on the windshield, I in fact, smashed the
 tupperware against it,
having no other weapons (eggs went everywhere), but
 they kept going. I
yelled that there are cats in there, but they didn't
 stop. Ed heard me
yelling and by the time I got back inside, he was on
 the phone with 911.

As indoor cats they don't wear collars, though both
 are microchipped. They
ride well in the car as long as they're loose, so
 they were loose. I don't
know which is more likely, them to get thrown out,
or to be kept in. Satch
is probably talking the thief's ear off because he
 didn't get fed before we
left. I am so scared that they'll have been thrown
 out. Satch is a big
guy, was found on the streets, he can handle what is
 likely to present
itself to him, but the kittenoh you guys, I'm so
 scared.

I would have thought they'd be a theft deterrant.

He threw my book bag out the window across from a
 nearby park, I have no
idea why that item of all that he could have (my
 overnight bag, grocery
bags, etc), and figure that it's God's way of saying
 that even through this
stress I still have to study. ha. Ironically the
 20 lb biology book was
probably the most valuable item in the car, not that
 its street value would
 amount to much.

Naturally, I've spent the morning searching that
area to see if the cats
might have been tossed there, too, but haven't found
 anything. Satch knows
his name and comes to it, so I hope that they at
 least stay together.

Pray that the police call ( I have Ed's cell phone,
mine was in the car, but
maybe they'll be able to use it's tracking device to
 locate it ), and pray
that they have good news. Picture Satch and Beatrix
 oblivious to my
concerns and sleeping on the back seat, or hanging
 out on a nice porch
waiting for me to find them. Pray that they not be
 stressed, but get back
to me after a harmless adventure on their end.
please pray that I see them
again and that they are unharmed.

 Thank you all so much,
 Leslie

Re: Stolen car (non)update - another idea

2006-10-17 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Leslie:

I think Nina has a good suggestion regarding calling
the phone. You can also have people text message your
phone as well. The person may read the text messages
since this does not require speaking into the phone.
I recent lost my cell phone at Jewel Grocery Store
when grocery shopping. Since I use my cell phone for
rescue and the rescue group business, I get alot of
phone calls. Well after a short period of time, one
of my friends call my direct home number and told me
that my cell phone was at Jewel. I did not even
notice that I had lost the cell phone. I just thought
that it was being a quiet night?? You see my cell
phone ringer for caller I.D. is a recording of six 10
day old baby kittens screaming to be feed. So say the
least, Jewel was delighted to hear from me and that I
was coming to get the phone. The phone was driving
them crazy and Jewel's customer service text message
my friend that I had lost my phone. That night was
busy with phone calls that was screaming baby kittens
to be feed!

So maybe the person that took the car may get curious
about all the phone calls and text messages. Maybe
the person will try to read the text messages and see
they are about the cats. I know it is a long shot but
it happen to me!

Precious Pets

P. S. Another suggestion would be to offer a reward
for their safe return in the text messages.

 You should put one
in the lost/found section as well, but find out how
 much it costs to
place an ad somewhere in the paper itself. When you
 get the salesperson

Describe the car. Don't just write emails, keep
 calling the TV stations
and the newspapers. Go down there if you have to.
 This is off the

By the way, the food should be good for six months
after the expiration date. By law, nothing can be
sold past it's expiration date! The stores have to
pull it from it's shelves and dispose of it.

Whenever something like that happens, I am feeling
that somebody up there decide to make my day! I
love people like that! I am so happy for you!

 drafted letter which I'm
copying below with the reply I got from the person I

tell me if my letter is rude because that obviously
 isn't my intention

dangerous it is to post a pet for FREE. My letter
 follow below:

  Hi Kathy,
Belinda here, I admin the ads, and there are no
 Free To Good Home
ads allowed, none is the same as FREE. This is
 very dangerous for the
cat, there are all kinds of lunatics out there.

I don't think you want Tiger to end up being
ripped to shreds by a Pit
Bull in training to fight, or to spend his last
 few minutes on earth
petrified while a snake squeezes the life out of
 him and devours him.
Or maybe a sick, demented person who scours ads
 daily looking for an
animal to torture and beat until they tire of them
 and finally put
them out of their misery by killing them. Then
 there's the buncher who
looks for free or cheap pets to take to labs where
 they are
experimented on and then killed when they have
 served their purpose,
these bunchers get anywhere from $30 to $100
 dollars a pet from these
  labs.

Giving an animal away FREE is very dangerous for
 that animal and I
personally would rather euthanise a pet than take
 a chance that they
could end up in some horrible situation like those
 I described.

I get emails every single day about some poor pet
 that has endured
horrible things until they finally died or were
 killed. I have even
been told by some of my rescues how a whole family
 will come to look
at an adoptee making them appear quite normal,
 only to find out later
the pet was tortured again and again until it
 finally died or was
killed. Please, please be very, very careful who
 you hand Tiger over
to, he is depending on you to make sure he is safe
 when he goes to his

I belong to a group of people who are all owned by
 FeLV+/FIV, most if
not all have other cats who are negative. Some let
 their cats mix some
  don't, it's a personal preference thing.

I personally had 6 cats, my Bailey was my FeLV
positive, he was + at 5
months of age. I just lost him last month to
 anemia at 11 years of
age, he wasn't sick for all of those years. I just
 lost him in May
after a 5 month illness to what turned out to be
 cancer. He lived,
ate, slept, played with, groomed and on occasion
 had spats with all
his vaccinated, negative housemates for all those
 years and nobody
ever got it from him. It is almost impossible for
 a healthy, adult cat
to get it from a positive and if they ever did the
 healthy adult cats
immune system would fight it off.

The bottom line is it isn't as contagious as most
 vets would have you
believe. AND FIV is even less contagious and
 harder to give to another
cat as it takes a deep bite wound to for it to be
 even possible to
transmit it from one cat to another.

Re: Question #2: Grooming

2006-08-22 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
I agreed with MC observations and suggestions
regarding grooming! You have to go on what each
individual cat likes when it comes to different
grooming tasks!

I find that most cats in general like to be brushed.
Brushing can be a positive bonding experience for you
and the cat. MC's suggestion regarding the Zoom Groom
is correct. My cats love the Zoom Groom when I have
time to use it. I usually brush only the cats that
are long hair or are fat. Fat cats have a difficult
time grooming their hind end due to their weight and
get knotted up. Cat rescue keeps me pretty busy! I
think my rescues get more attention then my own
personal cats! I feel guilty alot of times regarding
not having enough time for my own cats.

Baths are a different story! Usually that is the
worldwide wrestling of human verses kitty! I will not
give a bath to a cat or kitten unless they are dirty
from dirt, grease, urine, feces or other substances.
I specialize in orphan kittens under the age of
4 weeks. That is when I give alot of baths. My last
litter of kittens that was three days old when I got
them required three baths a day! Talk about dish pan
hands!

Nail clipping usually is done in sessions. If I can
get two to three nails clipped, I count my blessings!
If I get a whole paw or two, I feel truly lucky and I
am off to play the lottery! I try to remember to
clip nails once a month with the rescues. My own
personal cats is when their nails catch on me or
anything else! I have the best success when I go to
the vet. The cats are so upset about not being home
that they will let me clip all four paws!

I do not have time to brush teeth with any of the
cats, rescues or private! I have heard that once a
day is good! With my FIV cats (private and rescues),
I will use a dental variety (regular or prescription)
dry food to help with their teeth.

Ear cleaning is done only when necessity! My personal
cats ears rarely get cleaned because usually do not
need it. The rescue cats ears are checked, elevated
and cleaned once when coming in. If infected, they
are treated for the infection until it clears up and
left alone afterward. You have to be careful about
ear cleaning! Too much ear cleaning can cause a yeast
infection!

WAY before they'll accept having the knots removed
 less mechanically!

with short-haired cats, brushing isn't AS vital,
however, if you go and get
yourself a Zoom Groom, which most cats LOVE, you'll
 be amazed at how much
stuff is hanging out on your short-haired cat! in
 fact, i'm almost
convinced that short-hairs shed MORE than long-hairs
 do. prices vary, but it
 shouldn't be much more than
 this:http://www.petcarecentral.com/ko-117.html i've
had cats who hate being brushed FIGHT over whose

these. they're useless for long coats, tho.

if you've got a kitty with only a few mats, use baby
 powder and sort of rub
it into the mat--that breaks them up and makes
 brushing/combing them out
much easier. detangling sprays are available, too,
 but the baby powder
 actually works almost as well.

i clip their claws when they start sticking to
 things---me, the furniture,
the screens, etc. i rarely clip rear claws. it's
important to keep an eye on
claws because they can grow back into the pads and
 cause infections/pain.

 i haven't done a full-body bath on a cat in years.
 with the persians, well,
when there's diarrhea, it gets ripe pretty easily,
 so partial baths are
occasionally necessary. if the offending substance
 has already dried, i'll
usually use the clippers instead of trying to
 rehydrate the mess.

teeth. well, i know that i SHOULD be brushing their
 teeth, but i just
haven't been able to bring myself to doing it.
 rita from purrever ranch
mentioned recently about adding ground-up bones to
 food to remove
tartar--i'd like more info on that!

i pretty much ignore their ears until they let me

usually if its anything, it's earmites, and i give
 them a dose of
 ivermectin.

much hair you can comb out of a short-haired cat! It
really gets down to the undercoat too...especially
on their back near their tail. I comb them out about
once a week...and I'm talking big handfulls of hair
 off of each one.

  Yeah - I know I'm a nut...but I'm totally allergic
to cats and have eight in my house. The thing is
though - my quality of life would diminish so much

washed frequently in hot water makes all the
difference in the world. Have benedryl - will
 travel! LOL

Something very remarkable happens when I bathe a
cat (which is like - never -- has to be a good
reason). It is as though both me and the cat grow
these huge, powerful energy fields of opposite
polarity. The force is so strong that the cat
instantly attaches to me, my head, my legs. It
defies the laws of physics! Talk about bonding...

including next to the bed. last year, i broke down
and bought a clipper, because matted persians will
allow clipping WAY before they'll accept having the
 knots removed less mechanically!with
short-haired cats, brushing isn't AS vital, however,
if you go and get yourself a Zoom Groom, which most
cats LOVE, you'll be amazed at how much stuff is
hanging out on your short-haired cat! in fact, i'm
almost convinced that short-hairs shed MORE than
long-hairs do. prices vary, but it shouldn't be much
 more than this:
 http://www.petcarecentral.com/ko-117.html i've had
cats who hate being brushed FIGHT over whose turn is
next with one of these. they're useless for long
coats, tho. if you've got a kitty with only a few
mats, use baby powder and sort of rub it into the
mat--that breaks them up and makes brushing/combing
them out much easier. detangling sprays are
available, too, but the baby powder actually works
almost as well.i clip their claws when they
start sticking to things---me, the furniture, the
screens, etc. i rarely clip rear claws. it's
important to keep an eye on claws because they can
grow back into the pads and cause infections/pain.
  i haven't done a full-body bath on a cat in years.
with the persians, well, when there's diarrhea, it
gets ripe pretty easily, so partial baths are
occasionally necessary. if the offending substance
has already dried, i'll usually use the clippers
instead of trying to rehydrate the mess.teeth.
well, i know that i SHOULD be brushing their teeth,
but i just haven't been able to bring myself to
doing it. rita from purrever ranch mentioned
recently about adding ground-up bones to food to
remove tartar--i'd like more info on that!i
pretty much ignore their ears until they let me know
there's a problem; usually if its anything, it's
earmites, and i give them a dose of ivermectin. MC

Re: OT: Re: Wendy - How's your husband's back?

2006-08-22 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Wendy:

I am glad to hear that your husband is responding to
his treatment! It is so hard living with someone that
is in constant pain! I know because my husband was in
constant pain too! At least, your husband found
treatment and is dealing with it. Until two months
ago that is all I had to deal with. Now I cannot
remember the last time he complained about his back.
My husband suffered a stroke and is now wheelchair
bound and is para lazed almost 3/4 of his right side.
The only part of his right side of his body that was
not totally affected was the right side of his head!
That another reason on top of every else that I do not
have much time laterly!

 Thanks
for asking about my husband. He's doing ok. The

 the
sciatic after 10 treatments. We know this because
 he
has stopped having the pain shooting down the

 his

thinking this is going to be a great week for him.
 I
can't wait until he's pain free. I love him and
shouldn't complain, but it's hard to live with
 someone

Does that sound horrible? It probably does. I
 guess
I'm venting a bit, and of course, feel bad about
 that,

hydrocodone prescrip for him, and he was on valium,

Re: Frustrated with Vets in AZ

2006-08-18 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Dear Karen:

You may want to talk to the vet personally instead.
The first thing I thought was the receptionist new or
fairly new? The receptionist could be uninformed! I
use several vets all the time. I can spot the new
personnel just by the way they handle me in different
situations.

Actually, at my favorite vet clinic for the longest I
could not stand the desk personnel. I had to learn to
ignore them because I love the vets themselves! Now
that the desk personnel got to know me which took a
considerable period of time, they are wonderful! I
especially can tell when there is new personnel at the
desk there because of their attitude.

I mostly lurk on this list because of the amount of
rescue work I do. There is some weeks that I can read
the messages everyday and some weeks I do not have
time to read any! Excuse me of for asking this
question! I do not know if you do cat rescue or not?
Do you know any local volunteers for cat rescue in
your area? They may know a vet to recommend that will
treat your kitties.I have had customers from the
PETsMART where we use their adoption center call me to
ask me what vet I use for my cats. I am more then
happy to call them back and refer a vet according to
their cat(s) needs.

I hope you find a vet soon that you will feel
comfortable and secure with treating your cats!

Everybody Cross Your Fingers, Tones And Paws For Sheri!!

2006-08-18 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Hey Everybody!

We got a nibble for Sheri last night! A woman called
my voice mail inquiring how urgent was Sheri
situation. I explained that recently, Sheri's foster
home gave us notice that she had to be out before the
Labor Day weekend. The foster home shorten the amount
of time they originally given us! Which means she
would be put back in a cage which is ideally not
something we want to do! The woman asked if Sheri was
in any threat of being put to sleep which I explained
no. We were hoping to place Sheri directly from the
foster home to her forever home to minimize her
stress.

The woman talked with me for about an hour. She has a
FeLV household and she seems to be quite cat suave'!
We are suppose to meet tonight at the foster home to
meet the prospective owners and to show Sheri. Sheri
is a little shy! She will not show well outside of
her regular environment besides her stress will go up!
So cross your fingers, toes, paws and whatever you
can think of for Sheri that this goes well!

By the way, Sheri is listed on the FeLV adoption board
if you want to see her.

chance that an Internist will be better educated on

 Precious Pets is
right, receptionists sometimes spout info when they
 should be keeping
their mouths shut. Make sure you speak directly to
 a vet and educate
them and the staff about felv whenever possible. I
 know a lot of folks

willing to learn and willing to listen. I'm still

 became apparent that
swallowing was becoming an issue, so we took him to

The vet said his lymph nodes were swollen and he
 seemed to be in pretty
classic crash mode, and rather than put him through
 more unpleasantness with
syringing and pills, we chose to let him go. We
 stayed with him until he
 was gone, quickly and peacefully.

When he came to us, he was filthy and full of
vermin, and it was days before
he would let us touch the parts of his body where
 the mats had been. When
he left, at least, he was clean and loved to be
 petted all over. This at
least we could do for him, and give him all the love

This morning, I told him that if it turns out he

2006-08-13 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Dear Sherry:

Tell Dexter mom to just take one day at a time! It is
amazing how the days add up into months! Trust me, I
know from fresh experience!

My partner/roommate that does rescue with me had a 16
year old cat named Boomer with congestive heart
failure. Last November of 2005, the specialist gave
Boomer two to four months to live. We give him his
medication and let him eat anything and everything on
the kitchen table. Boomer just left us last
Wednesday. Boomer lived five months more then the
specialist expected! We brought home Popeye's chicken
late Wednesday night after doing an adoption and
checking on our cats at the PETsMART Adoption Center.
Boomer had his favorite chicken and proceeded to go
back to his resting place. He threw a blood clot and
his back legs became paralyzed. We picked him up and
started for the emergency room. We just got around
the corner from the emergency room and he died in my
arms. It is hard to go into the kitchen now! I
expect to see Boomer on the kitchen table waiting for
his Sheba like every morning before his death! He
will be missed!

I started writing this to assure you that you may have
more time with Dexter. Not expecting that
reaccounting that night would bring tears. I have not
cried since that night for Boomer but writing this has
brought back the tears! Hopefully, Dexter will live
longer then estimated and you and his mother will have
more days then expected to enjoy him! I am off to
find some tissue!

  just will not eat. We
have tried every combination of approaches we
  possibly can with every
combination of food that we can. We gave him the
  liver shake on Saturday
and he wolfed it down, and the next meal he
 refused
  it but ate some regular
canned food and some crunchies, and then after
 that,
  nothing. We syringed
him with the liver stuff a couple times, and then
  A/D, offering them in a
bowl first, or offering tuna food or tuna juice,
 and
  still he barely sniffs
at things. He has taken a couple of treats, but
 no
  longer jumps eagerly
into our laps for them. Gail works first shift
 and
  I work 8-4:30 in another
town, so the only time we are at home together is
  about 4 hours at night.
Feeding him is definitely a two-person job, so
  except for weekends and days
like this (I'm home sick) we've got to cram a
 day's
  worth of food into that
little time. When our Luc wouldn't eat, we had
 him
  intubated so that one
person could feed him a few times a day, but that
  nearly broke our bank and
we can't afford to do that for this little guy.
What kills me is he doesn't
like us too much any more, because of necessity,
every time we go into his
room it's to do something bad to him. And I keep
  thinking about what
somebody said here about cats not understanding
  future, it's all now,
and all his nows really suck. I really wish I
knew why he came to us --
to be saved, or to have a comfortable and loving
  place to pass. I could
live with it, if it's the latter, but if it is, he
  must feel like he's in
  Hell.

Plus, today I have a sore throat and the
 beginnings
  of a cold, and I'm
worried about making him worse. It's sort of moot
  because Gail can't feed
him alone, but it's just another thing to obsess
  about.

Sorry this is so gloomy, but this is really
 wearing
  us all down. In case
anybody has some words of wisdom: His eyes are
  still somewhat runny, though
not as bad as before. Vet had us discontinue the
  eyedrops, and she
supplemented the last few Orbax with Clavamox
 twice
  a day (at least he's
easy to pill alone). (We were at the vet's on
  Saturday, right after he
seemed to be starting to eat again.) He seems to
  keep down the great
majority of what we feed him. At least once per
  feeding his little tongue
comes out and it looks like he's going to hurl,
 but
  then he burps and is
okay. We have crunchies available all the time,
 no
  inroads into them for
days, same with water, although there's
 considerable
  water in the A/D when
we syringe it. His poop is runny, understandably.

I would be most grateful if anybody has some fresh
  ideas. :-)

Question about home test kits

2006-04-30 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Good question! I have not heard of any home test
kits. The only quick test that I knew of was the
IDEXX Snap test that most vets and shelters have on
hand at their facilities. It is too bad that the
shelter that you have been working with will not help!
The rescue group that I work with helped me to
qualify for the IDEXX Snap test program. This way my
partner in crime and I could purchse the IDEXX Snap
test at a discount rate and test anywhere we want. We
order the IDEXX Snap test kits from a veterinary
supply company. We did have to open an account with
the veteriary supply company. The Shelter Director
had to fill out portions of the paperwork. Also, one
of the veterinaries that we work with helped us by
filling out the other portion of the paperwork. It
was a real pain in the ass!! Pardon my french! It
was well worth it in the end! We also end up ordering
the IDEXX Snap tests for Giardia too. This test can
be done anywhere as well!

By the way, roughly, where are you located?

Eloise Test Little Known Fact

2006-04-21 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Dear Carrie:

When did the kittens get tested? Was it when they
first came in? There is a little known fact about the
Eloise test that I have not seen mentioned here. So I
am going to mention this information just in case it
has not been posted. If a cat or kitten is exposed to
FIV or FeLK 30 to 45 days before an Eloise test, the
virus will not show up on the Eloise test.

Unfortunately, I found out this information the hard
way myself. One day, five years ago, the Shelter
Director called me with a litter of kittens that was
five days old. Their mother was feral and the Shelter
Director was trying to trap her. Would I foster the
litter of kittens and their mother when caught. I
agreed. The litter of kittens had to be bottle feed
for about three days until their feral mother was
finally caught and went to the vet. She went to the
vet to have her medical done before coming into my
house. Her Idexx Snap test came up negative. Well
six months later, when the kittens went in to get
their medical done for adoption. One of the kitten
came up positive for FIV. The feral mother went back
in to the vet immediately for retesting. She came up
positive for FIV as well.

Normally that would be no problem since FIV is so hard
to catch being a weak virus. The problem was that
Lucky, the kitten that was positive had been escaping
out of the bedroom. He figured out that the screen
door that covered the bedroom door opening was only
propped up and not totally secured. So he would climb
up the to the top of the screen door and use his
weight to pull the top of the screen door away from
the opening of the doorway. Then he would climb over
the top of the screen door as the screen door close
gently on his body. He would squeeze the middle of
his torso and legs though. I was seriously
considering a name change for Lucky at that time to
Houdini! LOL Well Lucky had been playing with my own
cats whenever he could get out. Well to say the
least, I was hysterical at the time that my cats were
now exposed to FIV! I rushed everybody to the the vet
and had everybody tested. The whole time being an
emotional wreck! All my cats came up negative. After
that I was trying to figuare out how Ashley, the feral
mom came up positive for FIV. That is when I
discovered this little known fact about the Eloise
test that nobody tells you unless you ask!

So Ashley (the feral mother) and Lucky live with me.
Ashley is still quite feral. Lucky being hand raised
is the sweetest cat ever! Here is Lucky's pictures if
you want to see him:

I am so sorry that your are experiencing this type of
situation. Remember to just take one day at a time
when dealing with this.

Time Is Running Out For Magoo!

2006-04-14 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Greetings!

I mostly lurk since most of my time is spent on rescue
of homeless cats and kittens on the north side of
Chicago.I am lucky if I have time to read my
e-mail let alone be able to respond! This e-mail came
to me this morning. Cindy has been trying to find a
foster or a forever home for Magoo for some time
now. Cindy is connected with PAWS in Chicago,
Illinois. Cindy posted Magoo's picture and an ad for
him on the FeLV+ adoptable list awhile ago with no
luck! She is really desperate now due to his
situation! Is there anybody on the list that has an
opening for another FeLV+ soul? I do not know if she
is willing to transport out of state. That would have
to be discussed with her.

Unfortunately, I do not have any foster home openings
at the present time. I am struggling right now
finding foster homes for pregnant or nursing moms with
kittens, litters of nursing kittens or stray adoptable
kittens. My only two foster homes that have a FeLK+
cat or kitten are not taking in anymore right now.
Actually, one household has been shut down due to one
of the two FeLV+ cats has died from FIP. Actually, if
I did have an opening, the rescue group that I
volunteer for needs a foster or forever home for
Romeo. Romeo has been on the FeLV+ adoptable list for
some time as well! You can see Romeo's picture there
as well. Romeo's time is running out as well! The
last update I received was a couple of months. That
update was that Romeo was going to need another foster
home sometime in April. I will have to check with the
shelter director today regarding an update on Romeo.
Another thing on my list of to dos.

I am cutting and pasting Cindy's message to my e-mail.
If I forward her e-mail in my posting, the posting is
too big due to a picture that is incorporate as part
as her e-mail and not as an attachment. You can see
Magoo's picture on the FeLV+ adoptable list board.

Thanks everybody for your time and attention!

Cindy wrote:...You've probably seen this picture
before, and maybe even more than once. That's because
Magoo, who is Feline Leukemia positive, is still in
need of a new home. Permanent or another temporary
foster situation, it really doesn't matter. In two
weeks time, Magoo will be homeless once again. As it
is, his current foster is on an extended trip, and
Magoo is alone in an empty apartment, waiting for the
friend who comes to feed him. Even this very
unsatisfactory arrangement is going to end soon.

I had promised this sweet, sweet boy a better life
when I took him in last January. I told him he
deserved a loving home where he would be adored and
cherished, and I think he almost believed me for
awhile.

I know. There are so many in need. But SOMEONE
within sight of these words is meant to help Magoo.
Please, SOMEONE, he's waiting for you, and he's
running out of time.

Thank you,

Re: Need help and prayers for my sister's lost cat

2006-03-25 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Nina:

The first three things that cats look for when they
get lost are food, water and shelter. Your sister has
put food out already from your previous post. Make
sure there is food and water in the front of the house
and the back of the house.

Take a cat carrier or two and place them need the
front and the back of the house. Also, who is Tux’s
favorite person in the house? Put dirty laundry from
that person in the cat carrier(s). Put anything
smelly of that person in the cat carrier(s), a dirty
t-shirt or underwear. Put the cat carrier(s) near the
doors of the house in the front and back. Also, you
can put them near the brushes of the house in the
front and back. That will take care of the food,
water and shelter. Make sure that the food and water
are fresh every morning and evening.

Also, you also need to let Tux know where home is.
You need to mark Tux’s territory. Take used litter
from Tux’s litter box and sprinkle it around the house
and yard. You want to make sure to use the urine soak
litter first then the clean litter in the litter box
last. This will help Tux realize that this is his
home or territory.

Also, cats are nocturnal. Your sister needs to go out
in the early morning and early evening to look for
Tux.

Is Tux chipped? You need to contact the micro-chip
company and have a red flag posted by his micro-chip
number indicating that he is lost.

Also, your sister needs to physical check her local
animal control or pound every two to three days. She
needs to file a lost pet report with them or drop off
a flyer to them. Also, animal controls and/or city
pounds, are under staffed and overwhelmed. Most
likely, you will not get a call from your local animal
control or city pound. It is critical that you sister
physical checks her local animal control or city pound
for Tux. I cannot stress how important it is that she
physical checks for him. DO NOT COUNT ON YOUR LOCAL
ANIMAL CONTROL OR CITY POUND TO CONTACT HER!!

Have your sister mail out flyers to all the vets in
the area with a picture. Since you mentioned that it
is a rural area, she may want to send flyers out to
the regular vets and emergency vets in the surrounding
cities, suburbs or counties. This is just in case; a
Good Samaritan picks up Tux and takes him to their vet
out of the immediate area.

Post lost ads on Petfinder, Pets911 and any other lost
pet internet site. When at Petfinder get the name and
addresses of local shelters and rescue groups in the
surrounding area or counties. Send flyers to them. I
would send an e-mail as well. If time is limited, I
would mail the flyers first. Usually, shelters and
rescue groups are also understaffed and overwhelmed.
Unless the shelter or rescue group has a dedicated
volunteer that's monitor the web site, your e-mail
will not be noticed!

Also, when you are at the local animal control or
pound, you can inquire about getting another trap or
two. Some animal controls or pounds will lend you a
trap or two with a security deposit. If animal
control or pound does not have any, I would contact
your local shelter or rescue group and inquiry. I
would put out more then one trap myself.

I hope this helps in finding Tux. He will be in my
thoughts and I hope he is found soon!

New and hoping to learn!

2006-02-19 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Greetings!

I have been lurking around reading the messages. I
joined hoping to learn more about Feline Leukemia. I
have been doing volunteer rescue for the past five
years mostly for cats with a foster home/rescue group.
I do everything from rescuing the cats to screening
and finding them homes and everything in between. I
specialize in orphan kittens especially bottle babies.
Not that I choose that but that it has been chosen
for me by a higher power!

I have been lucky and had only three cases of Feline
Leukemia to deal with. two were adults and the other
is a kitten. One adult was placed with another
rescue group. I have placed the adult in a foster
home just recently in the past three months. The
kitten, Sheri is currently with me right now! I am
hoping to learn more about Feline Leukemia from
individuals that are actually caring for cats and
kittens affected by it. I do not know anybody that
owns any cats or kittens that have it.

The vet I am using I like! Actually, she is the best
that I found concerning cats. My concern is that I am
not getting enough information regarding Feline
Leukemia. The vet did advise to provide an
environment with a minimum amount of stress, a good
quality food and no access to the outside.Other
then that, I have been left on my own! Since I am
personally responsible in all areas concerning the one
adult and the kitten, Sheri, I searching for
additional information for provide the optima care for
them.

The foster home has a Leukemia infected cat already.
The owners are inexperience regarding the special
needs of a cat infected with Leukemia. The sole
caregiver for the cats is the wife. I provide the dry
food for my foster cat for many reasons. The main
reason is because the wife's food choice for her own
Leukemia infected cat, I would feed only to feral cats
if I had a limited income. I am trying to provide
educational information regarding Feline Leukemia to
them to assist them in the care of their cat besides
the foster cat. I really like her and appreciate that
she has taken in my foster cat! The wife has offered
to take care of the foster cat indefinitely until I
can find her a forever home.

Sheri is six to eight months old. Unfortunately,
since I do alot of fostering, she is caged confined.
Especially, since I foster kittens, I cannot exposure
them to her because they are not fully vaccinated yet.
I do not have pictures yet of her but will soon. I
have a friend that does pet photography on the side.
She is coming over this week to take her pictures for
me. I will be posting Sheri's pictures for adoption
in the future after further testing in 60 days.

I am hoping to learn more about the Transfer Factor as
a supplemental tool besides anything else. I usually
do not have time to respond to the posts that I
receive. I lucky enough to be able to read all the
posts. My time is mostly tied up in rescue. So I am
lucky to be able to lurk! So that this lurker's
story!

Have a good weekend!

Heart Murmur

2006-02-01 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Since the vet has discover a heart murmur, a
echocardiogram is necessary to determine what is
causing it. Depending on what is causing the heart
murmur and how minor or major the cause is, will
determine if they can do surgery and what type of
anesthesia the cat can get. The echocardiogram is
only necessary if your cat needs surgery of any type!
Most vets will strongly suggest the echocardiogram if
you considering surgery. At the same time, the vets
will tell you if you do the surgery without the
echocardiogram, they cannot be responsibly if any
complications happen during or after the surgery.
Some anesthesia can cause further health complications
(temporary or permanent) after surgery depending on
what is causing the heart murmur.

In the past year, my own personal cat and a rescue dog
that I was taking care of had heart murmurs. This is
the information that I gathered from my experiences
with them.

I would wait until Wowie gets over his eye infection
before considering any type of surgery. Since I do
rescue, I am never sure if a cat is going to come up
positive for FIV or FeLV when they go in to be spayed
or neutered. My biggest concern when taking them in
is that they are not sick from anything like a URI.
An eye infection would make me hold off doing any type
of surgery. The few cats that have come up FeLV+ and
got spayed or neutered, did not get sick afterwards.
Two of them were females and spaying is more stressful
because they have to open up the females' bodies.
Males have it so much easily because the reproduction
parts are outside of the body. I take my cats and
dogs to a low cost spay and neutered facility. They
test the cats prior to surgery for FIV and FeLV. Then
they do the spays or neuters right afterwards. Also,
They are on a time schedule and they do males first.
It is so much easier to neutered males and it only
takes three minutes to neutered the males.

My apologies in advance if I missed something. I am a
new member of only about a week. So they could be
something I missed like how long you had Wowie and his
previous illnesses.

Good luck!
