Re: [Felvtalk] 28 Cats..

2017-07-24 Thread Amani Oakley
Everything we tested was positive, and Zander most certainly had FeLV.
Interestingly enough, when I was able to successfully treat him with the
Winstrol/Doxy/Prednisone protocol, later vets started musing that perhaps he
never had FeLV. After all, they certainly couldn't admit that a drug they had
discounted due to its supposed propensity to damage the liver, was an effective
treatment for FeLV. When Zander began responding to the treatment, against all
expectations, some of the vets preferred to question the diagnosis.

We were sure all sorts of bad things were going to happen after we found out
that Zander was FeLV+. Not only didn't any of the others contract it, but he
was very close to several of them and would cuddle and mutually groom each
other. At first, this made me very anxious and I would separate them, but
again, as they had been doing this for months BEFORE the FeLV diagnosis, I
figured if they were going to get the virus, they would have gotten it by then.
Nothing happened. I had found one kitten, during the time we had Zander, so we
kept her isolated in a bathroom until we could find a home for her. She was and
still is just fine. We didn't use any particularly clever method to keep them
apart - the kitten just stayed in my husband's bathroom until I lined up a home.

I had a FeLV positive boy (Zander) for seven years with all my other cats. No
one else got it. By the time we figured out he was FeLV positive, he had been
with my other cats for more than a year, so I figured that any harm that was
going to be done, had already been done. Since then, I have looked into this
online, and from what I am reading, FeLV cats don't really pass the virus on to
other adults all that readily, and the main risk is to young kittens. Even
then, the virus is not a hardy one and doesn't survive long in a cat's
environment.

I have mixed positive and negative cats for years and no negatives have
contracted the disease. They share beds (mine) bowls and boxes. At first when
the negatives were young, I had them vacinnated, now I do not they are all at
least 13 years old.

2017-07-24 Thread Sandy

It seems to me, each one of us has a different vet - and each vet seems to have
a differing opinion - it's what they "learned" in school and unless they seek
to know more and better info continue with the same practices and opinions-
such as the "yearly" vaccine protocol. I guess it's like each one has to do for
our own health care - be informed and take charge. And, it's not easy

My vet believes so although has made it clear that no vaccine is 100 percent
effective and that an older cat with an established immune system has more
chances. Who really knows

2017-07-24 Thread Armstrong-Brown, Sheila DDS Timonium
I have the same set up, a door with plexi so he can see the other animals. He
has a bed and tv and 2 big rooms to run around, I just feel bad that he is
alone most of the time until I get home and we watch TV together for acouple.
I am scared of that vaccines b/c of the dangers I hear about.

Sheila, my 2 cents-
- for me - it's not just spreading the FeLV to others, it the autoimmune
problem of not being able to fight off viruses or diseases that they could get
from other cats.
I have Buddy in our guest room - in a controlled environment- we replaced the
door with another re-engineered door. The replacement door bottom panel we
replaced with clear plexiglas so he can see the other cats in the house, and
the top panel with a screen door screen guard panel for air and to get house
sounds. He uses the plexiglas as a drum-especially when he wants attention!

I have spent at least 2 hours with him each night for the last 5 years- have my
own easy chair and large screen tv :)

That's the remedy I came up with so he gets plenty of loving and entertainment-
he's probably the healthiest of all the other 14 I have inside!

•Food: no junk food, both wet and no-grain kibble -that includes a variety of
brands- and fresh water
•Vaccine: wouldn't touch it - I don't use vaccines unless required by law
•Stress: I keep it as low as possible, that means only vet trips if life &
death- can't afford routine visits because we're living on retirement funds
•Pray: a lot
Will be praying for Robert too!

Re: [Felvtalk] 28 Cats..

2017-07-24 Thread Gloria

Thank you . I love them all but a vacation one year might be nice. Too many
animals to leave and go away. I don’t trust many to actually be able to
medicine the ones that need it. Just the soft food is $60 a week. Besides the
25 pounds of dry food.

Sheila, in my (completely unprofessional) opinion, the vaccine is a good idea
for your cats that are currently healthy.

If it were me, I'd keep the FIV and FeLV separated just because they already
have compromised immune systems and any illness they come in contact with could
really be devastating. Also, the less stressed your FeLV cat is, the better off
they will be.

Thank you for taking in so many sick and unwanted animals, they are certainly
lucky to have found their way to your home!

2017-07-24 Thread Armstrong-Brown, Sheila DDS Timonium
I heard the leukemia vaccine carries a high risk of cancer. Does anyone have
their FELV cat around non-felv cats? I thought about letting Skylar out only
while I am home and see how it goes with the regular cats. But I have a FIV
cat in the mix of the other cats and not sure if they would pass germs and
cause more harm. My Felv has no signs of illness since he was moved him
indoor.I don't think he can be near the FIV cat. Thanks for any info

Re: [Felvtalk] 28 Cats..

2017-07-24 Thread Armstrong-Brown, Sheila DDS Timonium
No one helps me Bob. I started a 2nd job at an animal hospital so I can get
the discount on all the cats. It's still very expensive. No fosters, they
stray in to the farm and people drop off sickly animals and all the humane
society would say is that if I turned the cats in to them, they would be put
down. So until I can't afford to eat, I just get them spayed, neutered and
healthy again and I just keep them. 14 are indoors. The sickly and sweet ones
I always bring in . Glad I have a big house.

Things have been very quiet on the group lately...OR... I am once
again

not getting group mail

Has there been activity I've missed??
My Hospice Boy ( Gilbert) is doing quite well for the moment but (
as we
all know with such things it could change any minute...so I'll just
enjoy
it while it's happening)Wondering if any of you have
experience
with Higher dose Prednisolone administered chronically ( say above
7.5 mg
QD)... When I agreed to Foster Gilbert it came with the proviso that
I
would follow their directions ( Which I will hold to unless I feel
they are

killing him unnecessarily quickly) His Tumor does not appear to have
gotten any larger and his pain appears to be pretty well
controlled
Just wish I knew specifically what is helping the most so I could cut
down
on superfluous drugscurrently he's on Gabapentin( .4 cc BID if
pain is
up.. QD if doing OK).. for pain, prednisolone ( 10 mg QD administered
via

syringe dissolved in milk, Venus Fly Trap SubQ BID ( interesting
substance... bears closer scrutiny... supposed to have anti tumor
activity) Two other " alternative " medications !
 which I h
ave suspended only because the poor boy screams bloody murder every
time
I have to give him something. with a tumor invading his oral
cavity I

want to keep anything PO to a minimum
Seems that the cats I've had that are _ supposed_ to ( clincally)
die

don't and the ones that that aren't ..do Hope everyones buddies are

doing reasonably well ( as reasonably well as FeLV Kitties can do)...
Gilbert, as I mentioned, had a traumatic brain injury which has left
him
with poor balance... but lately he's been insistent on expanding his
range
and even tried running this AM..
