Re: Cat shampoo to recommend...
A great tool to use to safely cut out mats is a letter opener like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007844NO/qid=1133837289/sr=1-14/ref=sr_1_14/002-6508072-7664811?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=1064954 You can slip it under the mat, and slide it through the mat, with the plastic back next to the cat's skin. That will cut the mat in half down the middle, then it will be easier to break it apart with a comb. Don't slice with it like a knife cutting parallel to the skin, keep it at a 90 degree angle to the cat's body at all times. They also make dematting combs, but these are not as safe for amateur groomers. I prefer the short bladed matbreaker style for cats: http://www.petco.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=155276&cm_ven=nfg&cm_cat=52&cm_pla=155276&cm_ite=5391581&CMReferringUrl=http%3a%2f%2fwww.google.com%2fsearch%3fsourceid%3dnavclient%26gfns%3d1%26ie%3dUTF-8%26q%3dmatbreaker%2bcomb There are quite a few detangler products out there, none of which I have ever tried myself, here are a few: http://www.thecatconnection.com/Tomlyn's-Spray-on-Detangler.html http://www.catseyesupplies.com/item.jhtml?UCIDs=915180%7C1269188&PRID=1454467 http://www.catseyesupplies.com/item.jhtml?UCIDs=915180%7C1269188&PRID=1516320 http://www.eqyss.com/pet_survivor.asp http://www.eqyss.com/pet_mega_tek2.asp Jennhttp://ucat.ushttp://ucat.us/domesticcatlinks.htmlAdopt a cat from UCAT rescue:http://ucat.us/adopt.html Adopt a FIV+ cat: http://ucat.us/AWrescue/FIV/Adopt a FELV+ cat:http://ucat.us/FELVadopt.html~~~I collect KMR kitten formula labels for Bazil, a 3 yr old special needs cat who must live on a liquid diet for the rest of his life.Bazil's caretaker collects labels and sends them to KMR, where they add up until she earns a free can of formula!PLEASE save your KMR kitten formula labels for Bazil! If you use KMR, even just one can, please email me for the NEW address to send them to!~Does your cat have chronic diarrhea that does not respond to treatment, or has your cat been loosely diagnosed as IBD? RE: Cat shampoo to recommend...
Well, she does have long hair and its gotten matted in those places where she absolutely refuses to be brushed!!! She’s also sort of dirty from having worn a collar for two weeks. I think, however, that I’ll work on mats before I bathe her…no easy feat as some will have to be cut out…. RE: Cat shampoo to recommend...
Nevermind my last question! Chris, If it were me I would cut out the mats and then let him clean himself. I would not try to comb them out if he doesn't like it. When I brought Mama Kitty home from North Carolina she smelled horrible. She was living outside on spray soaked towels and then peed and pooped in the carrier on the ride down. My first stop was the vet's of course, and I asked them about bathing her and they said they didn't think I should freak her out anymore. They said just leave her alone to clean herself up. And she did! And it didn't take more than a few days. tonyaChris <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:Well, I think Im going to work on mats a bit before I do the deed! I don't deal with mats here much, and I usually comb them out BEFORE any bath, because once you get mats wet, they get tighter, and more difficult to remove. I do however have a favorite shampoo, It's made by TropiClean, it's their Aloe Moist shampoo. They have a phone number: 1-800-542-7387 It's made right here in the USA in Missouri, it's natural, environmentally safe, and NOT tested on animals. They make a whole line of products, and they all smell good, but I really like the Aloe Moist one, because my cats tend towards dry skin, and this really works good to get the dander out, and keep them moist.Jennhttp://ucat.ushttp://ucat.us/domesticcatlinks.htmlAdopt a cat from UCAT rescue:http://ucat.us/adopt.html Adopt a FIV+ cat: http://ucat.us/AWrescue/FIV/Adopt a FELV+ cat:http://ucat.us/FELVadopt.html~~~I collect KMR kitten formula labels for Bazil, a 3 yr old special needs cat who must live on a liquid diet for the rest of his life.Bazil's caretaker collects labels and sends them to KMR, where they add up until she earns a free can of formula!PLEASE save your KMR kitten formula labels for Bazil! If you use KMR, even just one can, please email me for the NEW address to send them to!~Does your cat have chronic diarrhea that does not respond to treatment, or has your cat been loosely diagnosed as IBD? Tropiclean also makes a spray on shampoo for flea dermatitis that is really a great product. It leaves their coats fluffy, white and clean smelling. It also heals those nasty flea sores too.[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Talk alot. It calms them id you talk to the soothingly while you bathe them. Give lots of reassurance. Re: Cat shampoo to recommend...
Chris, I feel for you... Bathing a cat is not my idea of fun. Have to go along with you on the drink & body armor! I don't care what the experts say, it's an ordeal for both guardian and fur-kid. Unless you have a Maine Coon who LOVES water! Like my Cornelius. He's just s big, and at times lazy. I can give him a bath and it's a real treat for him. Now my Mr. Chow. he was like it sounds you're dealing with! LOL! Anyway, for Cornball, I use "Earthbath -Mango-Tango", plus their conditioner afterwards, when needed. I get it at the health food place. Works great (as long as you can brush/comb the mats somewhat before bathing...) Pre-bath I use the "Miracle Coat Spray". Miracle Coat also makes a foam bath & a special detangling shampoo, but I haven't used either of those 2 personally. Halo makes a good shampoo, but never used it on a long hair. (And, as luck would have it, all I have is long hairs now...Talk about Furball City!!) Good luck. And have fun!!! Patti

Title: Message My Tucson has had to wear one of those wonderful collars for the last two weeks. The big day is coming up when it comes off. Here's the problem. On a good day, she's not too meticulous about self-grooming and with the collar, it became even harder. I tried to brush her and wipe her off but she likes only parts of her body brushed and wiping with something wet--well, you could hear the howls two blocks away. S I'm getting my body armor out and going to try to bathe her. Never have done that to her since she was a little kitten so I know it will not be easy! But, she is a mess and I can't let her stay like this... ?Anyone have handy dandy little tricks for the bathing of a large, strong angry cat (and she will be angry)? (Other than a stiff drink before I start!) ?Any particular brand of shampoo that might help with matting? Chris [EMAIL PROTECTED]
