RE: AC - cats marking
Usually the marking is a territory/dominance thing, rarely is that a sign of a health problem. I wouldn't know if he's always done that but if he was an outdoor cat, most likely so. Every time you add a cat to the household, everyone has to shuffle around and re-rank, and this cat is probably just establishing his position, which is normal (although undesirable). I work with these types of cases from time to time; there's no magic answer. Just like dogs work out who is top dog, cats will structure their own hierarchy, and that just plays out however it plays out. Be sure not to be visualizing him marking when you're not around; picture him walking through the house, having no vested interest in the furniture, walls etc., and absolutely do not visualize him spraying. What you want to do is get across to him that the house is a nice place for everyone. Picture him pottying in the box, and only there. Also send him pictures of him laying quietly with all the cats, having no feelings or vested interest about getting to be friends with them. That's not necessary or reasonable (we don't like every person we meet). Instead, you want to convey that every being in the home has to treat the others with respect and courtesy, that's all. Get a squirt bottle, put it on squirt rather than spray. If you catch him in the act (and only if you catch him, can't discipline afterwards, timing is crucial), squirt him in the body (never the face) with the water. Cats don't like water. If you get the timing right, he will come to associate the squirt with spraying and hopefully stop. Also, please be sure that you have thoroughly cleaned these marked areas with a good cleaner (not vinegar, smells too much like urine). There are a lot of products on the market that can be efficient. Note that the ones that have enzymes in them to break down urine, you must keep the carpet or area saturated with the liquid for at least 20 minutes. So be sure to put enough on. Kat Kathleen A. I have him up for adoption but he had some health issues so I was holding back on adopting meanwhile he is best buds with one of my cats. He has know started to mark places in the house. Most of the places where places the cat that was marking (that stopped). My question is do you know if he is unhappy here, has he always done this is he trying to tell me something. I had him tested for urine. I had complete blood work done he drinks like a horse too! He knows better cos if I see him and he is gonna start I yell and he runs like he knows this is not right. Any ideas you can see Thanks Carla
RE: AC - cats marking
Kat Thanks I never thought of the spray bottle. He was an indoor outdoor declawed cat! I know that declaws sometimes do this. I always tell him he is a good boy when I see him use the box. I am using some flower essences with him and also have the feliway plug ins and the spray(which I use after cleaning the wall) I will keep the visions of him being calm and relaxed with the other. I know with multi cat house hold especially foster it's hard. I welcome all new ideas it's a challenge to find out what the problem is. I solved the felmale cats problem a year ago through trial and error. Thank you so much Carla

If the squirt bottle doesn't work...use a soft-light-weight foam ball and wing it at him. (I know it sound aweful to throw anything at your animal...which is why I said only a soft foam ball that can't possible hurt them. It will distract without injuringyou can always soak it in lemon juice, but ONLY use it DRY. The lemon smell will be on the ball- cats don't like citrus and it will further help to reinforce the experience as an unpleasant one without causing lasting damage. (We tried squirt bottles to keep Quintapus off the counter tops to no avail. When he was a kitten-adolescent, Mom got so frustrated one evening when he hopped up to help himself to chicken that she was cooking for dinner that she turned the kitchen sink hose/rinser on himhe just LEANED into it shut his eyes started purring!..we were laughing so hard we were crying. So we had to come up with an alternative. The nerf ball worked better for us, but only AFTER we soaked and dryed the lemon juice to it.) T"Kathleen A. RE: AC - cats marking
On some cats, squirt bottles are nothing but challenges (I have a couple). I use one of those large UZI type water guns that kids play with. It will soak the cat instead of spray. Also, don't let them see you do it. Make them them think that the action is causing the water and not you that way, they won't do it when you aren't around either. I trained a cat to leave my bird alone using this method and he lived 10 years harmoniously with my birds."MacKenzie, Kerry N." [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: That's hilarious! Re: AC - cats marking
I have always used water bottles and squirt guns. They do know what those items are. I have one that literally hates water. I don't have any qualms in using them either. Also, use them when they are picking on each other at times. Not very often though.
