Re: groundhog
Yeah, he did have a mound of dirt. See, what happened was: He had dug his den out under our old propane tank, so the entrance was covered because it was under the tank. We had a new tank put in at a different location, and then we had the old tank removed. This left a bare patch of ground with a big gaping groundhog mound and den. SO... I took a garden rake, and I leveled out the mound as best I could, carefully avoiding his hole, then I made the bottomless (well it's actually 3-sided with a saltbox roof) house, and I sat that down over the hole, then I kinda pressed it down into the loose soil, and then I re-leveled around the house. I then dug out a rectangle in the front of his house, and set in a masonry brick as a concrete "patio". He likes to stretch out on his new patio, but no, I've never seen him up on the roof of the house. I don't think he's quite that athletic, to be honest, he's fat and has pretty short legs, and the roof is over a foot off the ground. I do have video of him on his patio, I'm not sure how good the quality will be once I upload it as a still image though. I need to put some grass seed out on the bare ground around his house, when it rains, the dirt splatters up on the walls of the house, it looks pretty filthy now. Re: groundhog
If you do check with the various Humane Society websites on where you shot an animal. There are various places on each animal that is more kind than others. Quite literally a bullet will bounce off the skull of some, causing more pain. Believe it or not, there are guidelines showing where to shoot. I still can't believe the vets If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man. No, I didn't. I do always feel a little bad that you seem to think I am such a stress case. I mean, I am sometimes, but I think we all are when our babies are unwell. I don't really think I am more than others on this list. And I certainly have seen a whole lot of death in my life, and in the past 5 years have lost 9 animals. So I am not sure I need to see any more death to learn whatever I am supposed to learn about it. But I appreciate your sentiments that whatever happens is what was meant to be, for some reason or other. Re: groundhog
That's awful, Belinda. Most vets will not touch wild animals, especially ones that can carry rabies. I am not sure if it is illegal here in NJ for regular vets to treat wildlife? I know that my local vet in MA, while not a great vet, was always willing to see if he could do something for any kind of animal, including wild animals. And I once found a vet on a road where I was driving who took a bird that I had found on the road and gave some meds to get it out of shock so i could get it to a rehabber, and had offered to rehab the bird himself if that did not work out. Actually, that was in NJ. I think it just depends on the vet. You know if we on this list were vets, we would be open 24 hours a day taking in everyone on earth! Re: groundhog
Michelle, Never doubt that animals know our thoughts and intentions, that groundhog knew you were trying to help her and appreciated it. Yes dying in the woods would have been a natural event for her but you showed her a side to humans she would otherwise not have known, that many do care about other living creatures. What you did was a compassionate, loving act for another living creature and that kind of gesture is always appreciated. And you did take her body back to her home in the end so you did all you could possibly do. The vet thing also disturbs me, what are these doctors thinking?? I should have worded that last sentence, "we can't *always* change the world, we can always choose to change the way we view it". I do believe we can change the world. People like those on this list allow me to believe that. Nina Nina wrote: Oh Michelle, What a terrible thing to have happen! I picked the groundhog up with a towel and put her in my car, and proceeded to make about 20 phone calls to vets and wildlife rehabilitators. No vets would help, all the rehabbers had answering machines saying they were full, and after about a half hour the groundhog died in my car. I brought him/her back to woods near where he or she lived, and put her under a tree there. It was so awful. I feel so sad, and I feel bad that if the groundhog was going to die, it had to be in my car rather than in the woods where it felt safe. So if you pray for those who have died, please add this groundhog to your prayers. And for the living, my friend Stephanie's dog Gunnar, a 12 year old shephard who had a really really hard life before she adopted him 2 years ago, who is having very sudden and serious neurological problems that have been diagnosed as encephalitis, and he is not responding to medications thus far. And of course Lucy, who goes up and down like a yo yo, and is not feeling so good right now. Thanks, Michelle See the all-new, redesigned Yahoo.com. Check it out.
Re: groundhog
There is a wonderful song at www.andiesisle.com/Calling_All_Angels.html My holistic vet sent the Royal Princess Kitty Katt drops with Calling All Angels essence in them when she was ready to leave this world and told me about it when she sent a card after Kitty left. I Googled it and this song came up. It has helped me more than I can tell you. I am sending it now to the group. So many of us are having extreme times. Please pass it on to Gunner's person. Assure her that Gunner loves her and knows how much she loves him. He is very grateful to finally be with someone who cares. As far as the ground hog is concerned: Had he been left in the woods alone and injured he could have met a much more painful end. He would have been terrified unless he made it to his den. You did every thing you could do for him. And he knows it and is grateful you returned his body to his land. I can not believe that no vet would help you. The rehabbers I understand. Most of them are volunteers and frequently are not available but a vet should have at least been able to help the groundhog on his journey. That is extremely upsetting. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man.
