Re: integration
Hi Susan,I'm one of the novices :) Our kitten Pippin tested a faint positive on the ELISA test back in June. She will be gettingher second test (IFA) on October 12th. She is 5 months and 2 weeks old.My husband and Ihave four cats. Tigger and Taylor are 13 years old and are brother and sister. They had a feral mother and we rescued them at appx. 7 days of age. Bob is 8 years old. He chose us; he came to our door one day when he was about 10 weeks old. Weanswered an online ad for kittens and chosePippin (but I really think she chose us!)We took Pippin to the vet the same day we adopted her, andfound outthat shewas positive for FeLV. I asked the vet if there was an alternative to having her put down. The vet suggested keeping her water, food and litter separate until we had her tested a second time. However, I wondered what was going to be the alternative at that point if she tested positive again? I really panicked (cried and cried) and stayed up most of the night researching FeLV. I wasn't pleased with what I read for the most part. And then, happily, I found this group! :) It gave me hope for Pippin's futureand I started thinking maybe she could be adopted if she was positive. That lasted a few days and I realized that no way could I let her go. She was/is my baby, just like my other cats. So, when I saw that some of the people on this list have been mixing their cats with success, I approached my husband with the idea of having Tigger, Taylor and Bob vaccinated for Feline Leukemia and letting Pippin integrate. He was all for it. So that's what we have done. We are getting the second test just to see if Pippin is still positive so that we can give her the care she will need. Right now Pippin is on Innova Evo and takes L-lysine. She appears to be very healthy and we hope she can throw off the virus. Our cats have a website if you want to read more about them; it's called Tigger Tales.Gina Placerville, CA Visit my Tigger Tales site! Re: integration
Hey Susan, I have ten cats, four in the house, and six outside. Of the six outside, two live in the garage full time. Three come and go; they have other families to attend to as well. ;) And one doesn't like other cats, so she lives down the street. LOL. So I guess I care for six full time, three part time, and one not at all, but she's still wearing our phone number on her name tag and the people who feed her know she has a home. :) Wendy --- Susan Franklin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: As you already know, I have two - girls (Kelly 16 and Meagan 8). Gunnar (for now) tested ELISA +, with a retest scheduled for December 1. The girls have their second vaccination this Tuesday night. Tanya said to wait an additional two weeks after that. So let me ask you all this: The girls know Gunnar exists. We've brought him up in his carrier to spend time with the family. There's been a bit of mild hissing and a few paw slaps. We also have a cage for Gunnar, since he's just a young guy and might need to be contained for a bit - especially when no one is home. Please let me have your suggestions and hints as how to finally get them all together. I KNOW THAT YOU CAN ONLY MAKE ONE GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION. I don't want to cause permanent harm or resentment by introducing them incorrectly. And I certainly don't want any fighting! You guys have all been there, so your successes and mistakes would help us all. By the by, can we take a short poll?? How many cats do some of you actually take care of?? God bless all of you and your furry friends. And remember: God doesn't make mistakes. You're all together for a reason. It's just a matter of time to find out your reason for living. My reason is taking care and loving my two sisters, Kelly and Meagan, and now being here for Gunnar. We got Kelly at the Chicago Anti-Cruelty Socienty in 1992. We chose her. We got Meagan at the Chicago Ridge Humane Society in 1999 - she showed us her Dracula fangs like Kelly has and I knew she was the one. Gunnar, however, was DELIVERED to us like a Domino's pizza - God sent him ringing our doorbell. It didn't matter that I didn't order him and it didn't matter what toppings he had - God wanted him to live in this house. P.S. Gunnar also has Dracula fangs like the girls, so I knew that was my sign - God just saved me an adoption fee! ;D I look forward to hearing from all of you. To answer Susans questions: We have 3 cats: 2 negatives and one pos. The pos just came to us last week so were still novices and learning. But as far as integration goes, we didnt really do anything special. We really didnt have to since we arent worried about stressing our healthy cats, and Scooter seems comfortable here so theres not a problem in keeping him away from the others and gradually introducing him into the household. One cat (the oldest) was chosen by me, while the other two were strays that picked us probably because they knew they would be cared for. When Karma came to the house about 7 years ago, she and Montana hissed at each other awhile but learned to tolerate one another. Theyve never gotten friendly enough to sleep curled together or groom each other, and on some (rare) occasions one will take a swipe at the other in passing. Now that we have a third, we integrated him by letting him in the house (no cages) and so far, except for some hissing at the food bowls, its been fine. Scooter (FeLV+) can tell that hes third in the hierarchy and walks carefully when Karma is in the house but otherwise seems perfectly comfortable. The negatives can come and go using the cat door, so they arent all three in the house together 24/7 which probably helps keep the peace.
Re: integration
We've got ten little ones - only our most recent addition, Smokey, is Felv+. To date, he has a "private suite". We recently altered the door to allow for a flexiglass lower panel so he can see the other cats but not actually make contact with. The upper half of the door we screened in. We're hoping this helps make him feel a little bit more a part of the household . We're still struggling with the decision on whether or not to integrate with our negatives. ~ Evan Susan Franklin wrote: As you already know, I have two - girls (Kelly 16 and Meagan 8). I totally understand. But if you haven't already, read the archives on this site. These folks - especially catatonya (my fave) - mix and have had no problems. I anguished over this, but these people helped me lose my fear. In two weeks, I will be mixing. Susan M.
